VW'S Biggest Mistake? Why The Cupra Ateca Leaves Me Very Confused Indeed

  • Today I'm looking at a car that could be a SEAT, but it isn't. This is the new "Cupra" Ateca. Released to introduce the new "Cupra" brand to the world, the Ateca is something of a confused car - and I struggled to work out how it really stands out alongside other very similar VAG products.

Thanks again for coming down and giving my Ateca a go James,
While it was in at Cupra, I spent a day in the face-lifted version which is a far more thought-about place to be. Plenty of bronze contrast stitching about the place, a custom Cupra theme for the virtual cockpit, bucket seats as standard and far, far better paddles you'll be glad to hear.
Still, I absolutely love the car. Tons of space, ridiculously quick and just so much cheaper than the equivalent S3 or Golf R. A no-brainer.
It's also worth noting that even now, the brand new S3 and Golf 8 R still don't come with heated front seats as standard, and are still manually adjustable, however they are both now standard on the face-lifted Cupra Ateca.
I'll give you a shout if I get into a Formentor next. It won't be the VZ5 with the 395hp RS3 engine, sadly, but still worth a crack I'm sure.

1:37 ""Then, a few years ago, somebody, somewhere, [not sure whether that was in Spain or Germany], decided that that wasn't quite enough, they needed another brand: SEAT was going to be "cleft in twain" and turned into SEAT and CUPRA"".
    I can answer that:
    1) This was decided in 2016 by Luca de Meo (then SEAT's CEO). Cupra was launched in 2018.
    2) Decided in Barcelona (even though Wolfsburg always has the last word in these kind of things).
    3) Reason: SEAT is seen as middle-lower end brand. Luca de Meo complained that VW always undermined SEAT and that they wanted SEAT to be the "Alfa Romeo" of VW. CUPRA is to fill that space, to compete with Audi I guess (Audi to be nice, CUPRA to be the sportier one).
Now Luca de Meo is Renault's CEO, and he's gonna do the same thing there: he's gonna prompt up Alpine, the "Alfa Romeo" of Renault Group.
    You're welcome.

I know like 5 families with either the Ateca or the Karoq, and they purchased these after they either had a MPV of Vauxhall/Opel like the Zafira or some sedan/wagon like the Insignia or Superb or Passat.

Well, here’s a real world report. I took delivery of a Cupra Ateca last summer, I’ve covered just under 8,000 miles already, and it is an awesome car! It goes like a stabbed rat, that engine is sweet as anything, stick it in comfort mode and you can average over 29 miles to the gallon, run it in Eco mode and you can take that to over 35MPG. But engage Cupra Sport mode and everything tightens, the gear changes are faster, and you get a fantastic exhaust “burp” as well. Is it good VFM? Well, mine booked in at 38.4K, the Audi cousin was nearly 50K and the Porsche Macan (yes, the Macan has the same running gear) was over 52K, a premium of 14K for what - a fancy interior and badge appeal. Those who keep dissing the Cupra Ateca need to get rid of their snob-goggles and see it for what it is - the fastest sub 40K SUV on the road right now! And for the record, we had some really epic snow in January and I ran this car all over the place in snow mode on standard tyres and it NEVER gave up once.

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@SuperSuperAllons93 Since a Golf R is a cheaper car, the monthlies being lower on the Cupra mean one of 3 things: huge final payment, insanely long term or they can't sell the car at full price and are discounting it. None of those 3 are good things...
I'm not really suggesting it's a terrible car at all, but SUVs don't make a whole lot of sense except as 7 seaters or for people who genuinely can't get into a lower car. Otherwise they're heavier and higher than they need to be, meaning less efficient, worse handling, worse performance, etc. Again, worse doesn't mean bad, simply worse than they need to be so not my thing at all.
I've only got one car, the porker has plenty of luggage space (425 litres compared to 485 in the Ateca) but trips to Ikea are challenging! Can take 2 sets of golf clubs, 72 cans of beer and a spanish guy all in the boot though...don't ask me how I know that. No rear seats either, but everyone else can walk ☺

Maybe you could contact VW and have them let you sample one? I am sure you can pull this off... That is, if you are interested in it, of course!

I nearly always have it Cupra mode, and it's still reasonably comfortable. I would criticise the DSG box which is dim witted even when used manually and in auto Cupra mode, it changes up the gears for fuel economy. It has really noisy wipers and the press buttons are crap as they stick (I know another with same problem) so you find the rear door coming down on you every now and again. I would agree the steering has little feel and has a false heaviness to it. Beside my niggles, it's not a bad car.

Hmm. Do think that both the JM review and many of the comments are blinkered or at least unimaginative. Let's say you have a dodgy back and find a small SUV a lot easier to get in and out of comfortably. Reading the various car forums, you'd be surprised how many of us fall into this category.
So you want something with a decent chunk of power with 4WD, and decent space for 4 adults and cargo but you don't like big, clumsy, heavy SUVs. I used to run a Macan for instance but got rid it as just too large and heavy for the country lanes around here (and also for the poor driver ergonomics - eg all those buttons - they may look impressive, but you try and find the right one at a quick glance). What else would you choose? Stelvio is F-Pace sized - huge. Even Tiguan keeps growing to the point where it's now a moderately large car. Evoque is in the right ballpark but it's so heavy that even the P300 doesn't have the performance it should. Formentor is an odd thing once you look hard at it - starting to get too low to be comfortable and its shape reminds me of the old X1, not a good look. Q3 is what I currently run, but there's no SQ3 available, and RSQ3 has almost too much power to be useful and costs silly money for what it is.

To be fair I think that having Skoda, SEAT and Volkswagen making similar stately looking cars is probably too much, so swapping SEAT to a head to toe sport brand might make a bit of sense, but it's at the expense of the Cupra legacy... Because a Cupra used to be the highest performance SEAT with the highest trim, now it can also mean inferior performance and low trim (V1 is the lowest trim of 5!).
Also, back to the Skoda and Volkswagens... do VAG now stop making 'sports' trims for these now because they have Cupra, a dedicated brand to sport trims? Probably not because they haven't thought that far ahead.

VAG have never commutes to making SEAT the sporty affordable brand. Introducing Cupra as a brand was just confusing especially using an existing mainstream SEAT crossover. They should have waited for the Formentor with the 5cyl engine from the RS3/TT-RS which is only available in LHD. To make matters worse, the interiors are just standard SEAT and they’ve equipped them with some of the lower powered engines and loads of spec options. Makes SEAT redundant in my mind.

You've harped on about Seat been the lower arm of VAG but through most of this review you keep comparing it to Audi's. They're incomparable 90% of Audi drivers wouldnt consider a Seat on badge alone.
You mention that the head unit is now a touch screen but I've had no problem operating even on country roads.
I think it's a great addition to the Ateca especially having the model unit before it that had anologue switches, at the end of the day they are just keeping the model relevant before the face lift which you mentioned.
Ive got the Ateca Black Edition 4drive 2.0tdi dsg 190bhp, I've had it tuned to 245bhp and 490nm of torque it shifts.
I'm returning 35-50mpg depending on how I drive/motorway/BRoads but to achieve 30+ mpg out of a petrol 300bhp small SUV isn't bad at all.
The boot is more than big enough and the seats fold flat with levers in the boot, I've owned many new cars and this is the most practical and value for money car I've had.
In the recent snow I towed loads of cars out even with the factory Bridgestone on, I've took it on some mild to fare off roading and it's very capable.
Yes the car is 40k but most super minis with 80bhp are closing in on 14-20k so 40k for 300bhp SUV isn't unheard of even from other brands.
Drive the Audi equivalent the SQ3, they have the same MQB chassis and feel very similar and many interior switches are from Audi's.
Even the engine components under the bonnet have Audi badges embossed in the mouldings or on stickers.
Look at it for what it is a quality budget slimmed downed Audi with a different dress on for a lot less than a SQ3, you can pick a X-demo Cupra Ateca up for sub 38k face lift with more extras.
What could Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, Toyota really bring to the table technology or looks wise.
The interiors alone remind me of toyRus.
