Why Did 11 NBA Teams Pass on Tyrese Haliburton?

  • Tyrese Haliburton will be the MVP of the In-Season Tournament over LeBron James with one more win. Most people never saw this coming when he was drafted but it was still a shock that 11 teams passed on him. This is a look at why that happened and if the Kings were wrong to give up on him so early.

People gotta realize Buddy Hield was a cancer on the Kings. After his most improved 2019 season and he got paid, he stopped caring and became Jordan Poole'esque. Trading Haliburton wasn't just to get Sabonis but also to unload Hield's big contract because as a Kings fan watching Hield play on both sides of the ball was infuriating because he flat out did not care and he still had the audacity to complain to the media about not having the ball in his hands as much as he wanted. The trade didn't just make Fox & Sabonis All-NBA talents, it replaced Hield with Malik Monk, Trey Lyles, Kevin Huerter, and Keegan Murray. For Buddy Hield who played like he hated living in Sacramento and wanted to get traded, we got 4 players who play like they love Sacramento and want to stay. Kings pretty much got a full rebuild just from trading 2 players. Yes Haliburton is shining in Indy, but if the Kings traded Fox the narrative would be the same but for Fox. "Did the Kings trade the wrong PG?" Let's be real here, the media has never liked the Kings nor has the media ever given the Kings recognition despite the current success, if Hali was still on the Kings he'd still be flying under the radar while Fox would be getting all the national attention in Indy.

I do agree if Fox would’ve been the one traded than the narratives would be the same just the other away around. It still does not change the fact that this trade was a loss. Sure it’s been good short term but it gonna look bad long term and as someone who loves haliburton I still believe trading haliburton was the right choice just not for Sabonis. The kings need a center ever since boogie was traded and they had the opportunity to get a player of Sabonis’s caliber in the draft with sengun yet they make a braindead pick with Davion and miss out on the opportunity of acquiring a center and trading rese for a wing they desperately needed. Monte just got desperate to make the playoffs and at the time it worked but we gonna look back and say what was he thinking. He also never made it known Tyrese was on the market where many teams came out after the trade and announced they were willing to give up more for Tyrese

"Fourth Quarter Fox" is not the bust that people are pretending he is. And the Kings are coming off their best season in decades. Calling them a "first round exit" team after they seeded 3rd in the West and took the underseeded Warriors to a game 7 in their first full year together is pretty tone deaf.

I'm sorry A.M. I have to push back on that narrative of the Sacramento Kings making a mistake trading him to Indiana. Both him and Fox wouldn't have flourished as the players they are today if they were playing under one another. This was definitely a win-win situation for both teams and I'm not a Sacramento Kings or Indiana Pacers fan. The Kings got exactly what they we're looking for when they traded for Sabonis and paired him up with Fox.

This. The only reason this narrative is being pushed is because of the Pacers/Haliburtons recent success. The trade happened almost 2 years ago now and within the last year, the Pacers have been stuck in mediocrity without really changing their roster. The only difference between the 2 teams is that the Kings were able to succeed a little bit quicker with the pieces they were given. It really is a "win/win" trade.

Tyrese definitely needed to be traded but doesn’t hide the fact the kings made desperation moves and could’ve become a much better team if they gave a little more time but monte saw they were about to have the record for the longest playoff drought and had to pull the plug. The Kings had exactly the center they desperately needed before that in the obvious pick in 21 with sengun but decided to get Davion and had the chance to get quite a bit for haliburton but he was never exactly on the market for trade and Monte limited his trade targets to Philly and Indy where if they made his availability public we could’ve seen the a much bigger trade. Maybe it’s for the best though bc the wolves came out saying they had no idea he was available and would’ve given more to the Kings and Tyrese and Edwards would be taking over the league rn so ig it worked out

    • Only 3 players score at least 25 PPG on Min. 60% true shooting, while raking in at least 2 offensive win shares. SGA, Jokic & Haliburton
    • Only 3 players record at least 8 APG with at least 40% AST% and less then 14% turnover %. Booker, Jokic & Haliburton

IUPUI is (was) in Indy. Seems like fate
Also, Obi Toppin is off the Knicks...and on the same Tyrese in the Pacers. Oops indeed.
Lastly, Im neither a Kings fan nor an NBA media member (Pacers fan if that wasn't obvious) and I still say it was still a win win trade. There is no telling if Tyrese would have blossomed like he has if he had stayed there. Playing time, chemistry, coaching, etc all play a role. He and Fox were splitting minutes, and SAC had to pick one to give the role to. They got an all-star guy in return who immediately elevated them to a playoff team. Yeah, they probably still have more work to do to build off that, but, that was the next step for the franchise (one that took them how long to make?) and to act like it was a bad call for them in retrospect when there is little to suggest keeping Tyrese would have resulted in the same or better outcome is pretty asinine to be honest. That trade revitalized a basement franchise. For the Pacers side of it, we were facing a similar decision having to pick between Turner and Sabonis as the "twin towers" strategy wasn't paying off nor was it tenable long term and Sabonis had the most trade capital given his all star appearance. Turner allegedly asking for a trade was almost certainly a contract negotiation tactic btw. We were also in the midst of a rebuild (tank) already and these moves were part of that and thankfully sped up the process. And guess what? Both teams came out better for it, which is the definition of a win win. Can't see how anyone could objectively argue otherwise to be frank.

I had some front office connections at that time and the concerns were based on his lack of driving and FTR. Historically low numbers that made people think he would be more of a secondary playmaker and not primary. His shooting has concerns on whether his awkward form would translate and if it was quick enough. But it wasn’t considered a strength because of that (graded as decent + or slightly above average. ) he was also older as a prospect.
I do think that if he had a full college season and a normal pre draft process he would’ve been a top 5.

Dubs chose the NEED over TALENT that time. They felt they needed a reliable big more than anything else thus picking Wiseman, unfortunately he never lived up to the expectation as he had injuries and difficulties improving his inside game. Lamelo would've been a really great choice for GSW because he's a 6'7 solid pg who can shoot, facilitate, and dish assists, since Steph plays like a shooting guard with his crazy scoring arsenal. Lamelo with GSW would average double double in points and assists with all the scorers around him.
