Don't forget that defensive 3 seconds wasn't a thing when Bird played. James has had 100s of easy dunks through the center of the lane that Bird never would have seen. This would force James to shoot outside more, which would have dropped his ppg.

Bird is currently ranked #63 in all-time defensive rating. Lebron is at #171 currently. Much of that is going to be due to the difference in eras regarding physical defense and style, but younger fans love to compare stats between eras regarding Bird not shooting enough 3s or not shooting as high a percentage as Curry all the time. Regardless, Bird's defense wasn't really a weakness prior to his back injury. He made 3 All-Defensive second teams, and the league was full of defensive legends at that time. You had to be a pretty good defender to be put on defensive teams that included players like Moncrief and Cooper.

Let's get to the meat of Defense. Everyone talks about LeBron being able to guard players at other positions from guard to forward. But the stats show that he only guarded people out of his position less than 10% of the time. In today's game there is very little ball movement except for a couple of teams such as Golden State. LeBron has typically had an easier defensive assignment throughout his career. In Birds day the ball typically went to the small forward to Center positions which means percentage wise Larry had to play more defense. Bird also was on the all defensive team three times. He even came in third in Defensive Player of the Year award. I would give bird the nod on defense. If you look at LeBron's defense these Last 5 Years, he is an average to poor defensive player. There are countless times where he played little to no defense, especially in games where his team was losing. Bird never rested

the game is so diffrent now it's really almost impossible to even compare players from the two eras but i would have to give it to Bird if for no other reason then how tough he was and how much he brought up the the other players skills just because you could never slack when you played with him

I hated them but at the end of the day I could not deny that when Bird was on the floor when it really counted he struck fear in my heart win or lose I felt that man could finish us off. LeBron is great. His body is so freakin amazing. He is next level. HOWEVER, there is one thing about basketball today I’m not a big fan about is all the jumping around the league. There has been lots of major trades in the past but now it’s out of control. No loyalty at all from LeBron. The way he moved to Miami disgusted me. He wouldn’t even tell his own team his intentions. They had to watch tv like every body else. That is disrespect and selfishness gone stupid. Who’s better? Who cares but the things that matter to me is utterly lacking in. It’s fun to speculate. Watching highlights of younger Lebron, that guy was an amazing athlete. He looked unstoppable. But if you go back and watch highlights of Larry's college career, he looked like 1983 or 1984 NBA Larry Bird. It's as if he was never a rookie.
Another thing, compare pre '85 Larry to post '85 Larry, which is the year he broke his back. He's noticeably faster before he got hurt. Just saying. He's not the athletic monster Lebron was but he was faster before being injured. And talk about horrible timing: he got hurt just as Jordan was entering the league.
As for scoring, I like to remember that Magic averaged about 20 points per game while being a point guard with the highest per game assists.

When you talk about greats one thing that people never take into consideration. Bird took a small no name high school to the championship. Bird took a unranked college team to 33-0 and all the way to the championship. Bird took a last place Celtics to 1st his rookie year. Bird played for the underdog his entire career and made them all winners.

  • @stevenharmon3876
    @stevenharmon3876 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bird’s defense may have been as you say “his weakness” but we know Bird didn’t really have any weaknesses, he was as good or better than anyone in all facets of the game. And I also would just like to add that even though he was slow and didn’t have much of a vertical doesn’t mean he was not athletic, if you watch him play he was more than athletic enough for the game of basketball. If Bird played in today’s game of the NBA how it’s officiated, how soft most of these players are and how they spread the floor and shoot more 3’s (more in a game than Bird used to shoot in a season), Bird would have averaged between 40-50 a game. Hell he would probably have averaged 20 a night at the free throw line alone.
On the other hand, if you take LeBron back in Larry’s era, because he’s such a winey big crybaby he would have gotten a lot of technical fouls complaining to the referees. Also because of the way he drives the lane most times with recklessness and and out of control, he would have probably have fouled out of 9 out of every 10 games he played because of all charges he would have gotten, because the players back then wouldn’t have parted like the Red Sea like they do in this new soft league of pussies.

What do stats say about Larry Bird on defense?
Advanced statistics strongly support that Larry Legend was a good defender. Basketball Reference lists five defensive statistics in its advanced section. The per 100 section also including defensive rating. Defensive rating attempts to measure a player’s defensive effectiveness per 100 possessions.
Statistic Larry Bird Career NBA Rank
    Defensive Rebounding % 22.4% 71
    Block % 1.22% 242
    Steal % 2.16% 132
Defensive Rating (lower is better) 101 63rd
    Defensive Box +/- 1.8 37th
    Defensive Win Shares 59.0 30th
    Blocks, Steal & Rebounds
Bird ranks among the all time NBA leaders for all six statistical categories. He barely makes the top 250 list in block percentage ranking 242nd at 1.2%. But any appearance by Bird on this list might surprise some. His athleticism, especially in his younger years, is underrated. But Bird was never known as a great leaper.
Larry Legend ranks a little higher in steal percentage finishing 132nd on the all time list with a 2.2% career steal percentage. This statistic is probably a little less surprising as Bird’s most famous single play was the steal in game 5 of the 1987 conference finals. Bird was not John Stockton, but his instincts and feel for the game helped him to pile up a good number of steals.
Larry Bird was generally considered a strong rebounder, so his 71st all-time ranking for defensive rebounding percentage at 22.4% is expected.
    Overall defensive statistics
The fact that Bird ranks 63rd all time with a 101 defensive rating and 37th in defensive box plus/minus at 1.8 is probably less in line with expectations. Defensive rating is complicated but it measures how many baskets a player gives up per 100 possessions. That Bird is not that many spots behind Kawhi Leonard on the all time list is a bit of a surprise and speaks to his strong defensive abilities.
Defensive box plus/minus is an estimate of how many points a player gave up per possession when compared to a league average player & team. Again, Bird ranks very highly just a tiny bit behind noted lock-down defender Scottie Pippen.
Bird ranks 33rd all time in defensive win shares with 59 for his career - ahead of outstanding defenders Dennis Rodman and Chris Paul. While win shares are a complicated stat, they attempt to measure how much a player contributes to his team while on the floor. Paul still has time to add to his win shares, but, again, this is impressive company for Larry Legend.
    Stats Summary
The fact that Bird led the league in defensive win shares four times, and continues to rank so highly on the all time list, points to him being a highly effective defensive player.
Using modern advanced statistical tools can give us a picture of how good a player really was. They have their limits. Advanced stats are still less effective at measuring defense than offense for sure. But when you look into what they say about Larry Bird, it is clear: he was a good, if not great, defender.

Was Larry Bird considered good on defense when he was playing?
While statistics have a lot to offer, many people believe watching a player is the only way to really know how good they are on defense. Larry Bird passed the eye test on defense for most observers.
    All NBA Defense
His 3 appearances on the All NBA Defensive 2nd team make this case most strongly. The media covering the league at the time thought he was a good defender. The award alone does not mean Bird was one of the very best defenders in the league.
The writers can sometimes demonstrate flawed thinking with these postseason honors. But making all-defensive teams repeatedly makes it quite likely Bird was at least a good defender. The voters might mistakenly overstate a player’s prowess a bit, but they usually don’t just make it up completely!
    Defensive Style
As a young Celtic, Bird had the athleticism to compete well on defense. He always lacked the high end lateral quickness to cover fast forwards one-on-one. And he was never a lock down, one-on-one stopper type of defender like a Dennis Rodman.
But in those earlier years Bird was more than quick and dynamic enough to handle himself on the defense. This underrated athleticism combined with otherworldly instincts to make him a strong defender in his first years in the league. These were the years he made all three of his All Defensive teams: 1982, 1983 & 1984.
As the 80s went on, the Celtics surrounded Bird with strong defenders including Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson. But even in the Big 3 Era, Bird was viewed by most as one of the strong defenders on the team, not as any kind of liability.
When McHale became the starter alongside Bird at forward, he was assigned to chase the quicker, smaller forward while Larry banged down low with the bigger power forward.
The Hick from French Lick did well in this role. He was a good post defender. Bird used his instincts and awareness to provide good help defense and to swoop in for steals.
Larry Legend was also a very strong defensive rebounder who got the break going with quick outlet passes. Bird’s role on defense changed as the years went by, but up until his last few seasons, most observers considered him a positive force on the defensive end.
If you watch the video below, you’ll see some highlights of BIrd at his peak as a defender in the early 80s.
Why do many people think Larry Bird was bad at defense?
It is likely that many people remember Bird from the end of his career when his back injury robbed him of most of his athleticism. His shooting, passing and rebounding still made him a force.
But his movement was limited and his defensive capability faded. The Larry Bird of these years had to lay on the ground when taken out of the game to make sure his back didn’t tighten up.
He also had surgery on both heels to remove bone spurs. Bird became fairly immobile at that point. These are the last images of him that many fans carried with them as he left the game.
Younger fans likely couldn’t picture this broken down Bird flying around the court as he could in his youngest years. And even older fans who saw him in those years have to fight past these last images of a slowed legend to remember his younger defensive prowess.
When you combine the way he appeared at the end of his career with the fact that he had a unique profile for a good defender earlier in his career, it’s easy to understand how many fans can’t remember that Larry Bird was good on defense.

LeBron, coming into the league as a young man, and expected to be the savior of his franchise when he hadn’t even played one game in college, just way too much on him…….
And all of the media, not just sports all of media we’re giving him opinions of what he should and shouldn’t do , the hype around him was absolutely off the charts, and that’s not something you should be doing to that young of a man he should’ve went to college

I think there is another factor that is being overlooked: Bird's physical damage. Bird played with a damaged right hand and an off-axis spine (after '85). His stats would surely have been even more impressive if physically ok. And for this i disagree even on the scoring judgment: Bird has more vairety, which means being able to adapt to any defense in any situation. But if lock the center area could Lebron to be constantly a danger in attack? Can you imagine a zone defense against Bird? Lebron is a great great player, but Bird is another category.

    • @wmden1
      @wmden1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I hadn't thought of that. Bird would shoot over a zone like there was no defensive player on that end of the court. Then the passes he could make to cutters, etc.

Bird was a GREAT help defender, he got steals and blocks from the weakside and playing the lanes.. he was a decent one on one defender, but he was ALWAYS WILLING TO PLAY D AND PLAYED D HARD ALWAYS.. THAT is something LEBRON cant say he does..

How about loyalty? Lebron went to where he thought a team was built to win Bird played his entire career with Boston and INJURED. Was Lebron suffering like Bird and still the Greatest to play? And McHale was a rookie and Parish once said 5000 of his points were because of Bird...

I've watched this comparison before. He was wrong on a few.
Shooter - Larry EASILY is better. Not sure how he got that wrong. Larry can get as many points as he wants. Don't overlook the ideologies; Larry made sure his team was INVOLVED in the game.
Passing - Larry is also easily better. Eyes in the back of his head ..6th sense.
Defense - Larry could block MJ ...make a clutch steal, and HUSTLE....then you add Larry's IQ ...
I'd rather have Larry in defense.
Rebounds- Larry. Double digit lifetime rebounds. Better than Patrick Ewing
BBALL IQ, Leadership, Clutch. - Larry all day, every day. Vs EVERYone. Lebron is still playing JV.
    Dunker/Atheliticism- Lebron
Ball handling- Lebron by a little. Larry was pretty solid.
I felt it was only fair to add categories i KNOW Lebron excells in.
But, in the end, it's not even close: Larry is far, far superior.

Larry was a better defender and passer. Larry was creative passing based on what was happening at the moment.
Throwing a no look pass to someone you know is cutting based on the played called really is not a no look pass!
that occurs when you know your teammates are filling lanes based on bball knowledge, seeing where they were and knowing where they will be. With that said, Bird was thinking 2, 3 plays ahead of guys. Prime Bird any time over James

I'm curious to know how many modern players would still think there was even a chance to win at 5 seconds left down one pt with the other team in possession yet still made the effort to steal an inbounding pass, get it to his man for the bucket and win the most important playoff game for them that season? cause Bird did.

Any minor deficiency you may come up with on Bird's part in this comparison is more than made up for by his basketball IQ and willpower. He accomplished his 24 ppg in an era in which I don't think James could ever have flourished. Bird would have averaged 34 ppg today without trying. ALL of his stats would be even higher except turnovers, which would be a lot lower. There is only one area where I would give the nod to James, but posters don't make you the best.

To think with todays training and fitness technology and the mental aspect with teams even staffing psychiatrists what would Larry be like? Overall todays players are quicker and more athletic but scoring is much easier today, a lot more 1 on 1, less team effort. I differ on who is the better defensive player. Larry was three time NBA all defensive second team. I would say he is a better TEAM defensive player than LJ, while one on one it's LJ (5 time NBA all defensive first team)

Are you kidding me? There is no debate for who the greater passer is...Larry Joe Bird all day long. Larry did things in his position that Lebron couldn't even think of.annnd if Lebron did it...Larry did it first....my biggest issue with Lebron is his Heart....Larry played for the pure love of the game and the competition....not for the highlight reel, cash, and to run his mouth to the press. I will die on the hill that Lebron would have to hike up the skirt and grow a pair to play in Birds era.

Bird was better than James. 22 points in Bird's time was like 30 in James'. Bird was better than James, plus he was the best Free Throw Shooter ever. The other stats were pretty even, except for who was better in the Clutch, and Bird was eons ahead of Lebron, and Bird's opponents respected him incredibly. Bird over James.

Here are a few FACTS. If a ref is standing at half court and he rolls the ball out to center court, and Lebron and Larry are 15 ft away - guess who is getting the 50/50 ball? Larry, 90 percent of the time. Secondlly because you seem a little bit on the fence regarding passing. I've seen Larry Bird play 85 or so times. I witnessed him grab a rebound in traffic, and on a dime, turn around and throw a LEFTY, full court pass 75 ft pin point accuracy. He did it several times. His LEFT hand is the best to ever play the game, and he is a better passer without question, because he has the highest IQ the game has seen. I’d lastly like to dispute the ‘NARATIVE’ THEY want you to believe. I find it ofessive that people say BIRD wasn't athletic. How can you be non athletic in one of the most athletic sports and flat out embarrass even great players every night. Because a player is not as athletic as other super athletes, it doesn't mean he is not athletic. If BIRD were coming up now he would mop the league up. The truth is simple, ‘THEY’ could find any holes in a BIRDS game, so a narrative was created that he wasn't athletic. Do you realize what BIRD would do ofessively today? 1. No hand checking. 2. The Eurostep (adult traveling) 3. A league that basically isn't interested in great defense, because offense sells tickets. 4. Palming. When was the last time you saw a Ref call it? 5. No Back to Backs. 6 FLOPPING. and finally, 10 more offensive passions a game. A modern BIRD would also be shorting 6 to 10 more threes a game and actually practicing them. 45/14/12 2 stea
S 1.5 block shots 95 percent from the line. Just ask MJ himself who was the better player Lebron or BIRD? We all know when Jorden says BIRD, he gets interrupted by people because they don't believe it. How completly selfish and ignorant that a fan or self proclaimed expert is going to doubt MJ. FACT
