Watch "Larry Bird greatest passer (re-edit)". It might help you decide between Larry and KD (and Lebron, etc, etc).
Jordan said to people who doubted Larry's greatness: "You guys don't get it; Larry is by far the greatest small forward that has ever played the game." And Jordan knows first hand because he played against him many times in the Eastern conference. His Bull's regular season record against Larry's Celtics is 11-17, and 0-6 in the playoffs. His Bulls got swept twice in the playoffs! In one game Jordan dropped 63 points on the Celtics and still lost in double over time. That was the same game where, after the game, Larry said "it was as if God came down in the form of Michael Jordan", so the respect went both ways.

Bird was a much better rebounder and passer than KD. Birds 🏀iQ and clutch levels were/are possibly the best in league history.
But the biggest difference that I’ve noticed between the 2 players (and I started watching NBA in 1982 so I got to see a decade of live Larry Bird) ..... the biggest difference between Bird and KD is the heart, will, motivation and leadership.
Bird would give up points because he understood the importance of getting his teammates involved. Working as a team. Contributing to help raise a teammates confidence level within themselves and confidence in Larry... knowing that if they get themselves in certain positions Bird WILL get them the ball. No words needed, just practice and repetitive playing. Those teammates confidence and knowledge would raise not just for a game or a season, but for their entire career. Thinking about Mchale, Chief and maybe Ainge. Then as a result those guys end up contributing to the franchise and winning rings.
KD on the other hand.... just the opposite. He jumps ship from a talent filled annual contender in OKC and he signs with the Warriors. That’s not low character, that’s NO character. Can you imagine Bird in 1983 after two consecutive Eastern conf finals to Philly whining around about KC Jones, McHale, Parish etc then in the off season getting himself traded to the 76ers or Lakers to join DrJ and Moses?? Or Magic and Kareem??
He definitely wouldn’t be known as “Larry Legend” like he is today.
Maybe “Larry the 🐍 or 🪱 “ or “Larry the PUNK” or “Larry Leaver”.
Also KD is making 10 - 12 X what Larry or Magic made as they were literally saving the league and setting things up for future players to make the 💰💰💰💰💰💰 they do today.
When was the last time you saw KD diving for a loose ball or scrapping for a rebound ? Tying up for a jump ball ?
      Never.
Who is the better player between Bird and KD ? The one who brings more positive impact and more success to the team they play on. Bird by a lot. Anyone who instantly says “KD” either hasn’t seen enough old film of Bird to truly make an educated pick OR they’re just a hater basing their choice off of some sort of biased whether it be the era each played in, racial or they’re just scared of stepping 1 inch outside of their perceived status quo.
Choosing KD over Bird is like choosing a Ford mini van over a Rolls Royce or choosing a ham sandwich over a $100 T-bone steak.
      It’s honestly not even close.

If there was somehow a significant amount of money to be won (or lost) depending on a persons answer to the “Bird or KD” question then most of this younger generation who will normally just rattle off “KD” as their answer would instead stop and do exactly what they should’ve already done in the first place before answering a question like that. They’d stop and go educate themselves on some old Bird footage, stories, stats and other NBA greats opinions THEN answer the question.
If their answer is still “KD” after properly educating themselves then that’s great. Fair enough. But at least then they’d be giving a much more educated response as opposed to one potentially based off of race, NBA eras or just what their fellow 15 year old buddies say.
Regardless of the ultimate answer to that question a huge % of young fans would come away afterwards thinking “wow that old dude is way better than I realized”. I wish it was that way with all of the past greats.
Bill and Wilt. Kareem, Walton, Magic, Baylor, Dominique, Oscar, DrJ, McHale, Olajuwon and dozens more.
Go look up some Bernard King HL’s. That dude would shine in todays league.
It’s going to be funny in 20-30 years when there’s kids born in 2030-2040 talking 💩 on Lebron, Kobe, KD, Jokic, Harden, Giannis
calling all them trash, slow, weak 🤣 saying that they played with plumbers and cab drivers. Oh it’s coming. It’s gonna happen.
And even worse than just that..... if things within the league continue on the path they have been at the rate they have been.... talking about rules and refs calls etc... there will be NO defense in 2040-2050. I don’t mean bad or lazy defense, I mean NO defense. The league will be a league of 82 3 point contests a season. Or variations of that and the game
H-O-R-S-E. And worse than that yet still.... the players will be making $4 - $5 BILLION a season. And they’ll sit out for weeks at a time (from the 3pt contests) with a pimple on their ass.
Now you modern day fans, you 15 year olds imagine that scenario then realize that’s EXACTLY how us old school 80s-90s fans feel about today’s league. 🤚🏼🎤💥💨

Everybody has their opinion, but IMO to take KD or LeBron over Larry Bird is shortsighted. Watch Making the Case for Larry Bird, by Clayton Crowley. He makes the case for eight different players explaining why each of them may be the goat. Larry was the founding member of the 50/40/90 club and helped drag the NBA out of the toilet. Also, they’re playing in different eras. Today somebody looks sideways at a player and it’s a foul. A stubbed toe has the player sitting out the rest of the game with oxygen. In the 80s and early 90s they played like men, it got rough and the refs let them play. Twice, Larry Bird broke bones in his face and came back out and played the rest of the game. I don’t see any players today doing that. Everybody’s shooting threes, nobody’s going for rebounds, there is no team cohesiveness - everybody’s trying to be the star. They bounce from team to team in search of a ring rather than working on making a great team. I’ve been watching basketball from the late 60s. Larry Bird is the greatest player I ever saw; highest basketball, IQ ever. (and I was a Knicks fan!)

KD? The Bus Rider? Over Larry Legend the Bus Driver? That's an insult, not even a comparison. KD would be knocked on his ass half the time. Is KD going to battle Moses Malone for rebounds? Is KD going to make the array of no look passes? Is KD going to sacrifice his body every single game? Not a chance. KD post up game doesn't even exist. I watched and watch both. It's not close. 2nd Highest win % in history is Larry Bird.

100%. KD is a thin pane of glass compared to Bird.

  • @ldybozz
    @ldybozz ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's kinda dumb to compare KD to Larry. Especially since Larry mentored/advised KD. There's video out there of both of them talking about it. Bird played in an era of man-to-man defense, which led to more isolation ball, since help defenders who didn't immediately commit to a double team could be whistled for illegal defense. Eliminating that rule counterintuitively opened the entire floor, which has led to today's explosive game. Players with vision can absolutely feast on rotating defenses. Doncic is proof. Bird would've thrived.
The ’80s was such a great decade for basketball was because it featured some of the best players in history in the best team situations. You still saw give-and-gos, fundamental pick-and-rolls, but also a new wave of high-flying dunkers, and of course, physical play that today's NBA lacks. It was an era of man-to-man defense, which led to more isolation ball, since help defenders who didn't immediately commit to a double team could be whistled for illegal defense. Eliminating that rule counterintuitively opened the entire floor.

Cool react. Liked. Bird was different. Definitely the highest basketball IQ ever, IMO. My GOAT is two headed. Bird & Jordan. Legit never seen anyone like those two. Mike has the edge with the athletic ability. But both were just different than I have ever seen since. Yeah, I'm an old head....but I don't hate on today's game. I evolved with it. If Bird or MJ were in today's game, they would dominate. Spacing & no hand check would make it unfair to the rest of the league. They would legit score anytime they wanted to. Getting 40's on the regular. It's not even a debate for me. I'm just glad that I lived through that...and happy to see all the young ballheads now seeing just some of their greatness on here.

Great shooter like Bird, both have very high release points and can get their shot off but Bird made the all NBA defense second team three times. KD will never do that although his defense isn't weak. Bird played more team defense and stole the ball rather than tight man to man but he could hurt you on defense too.

With today's diet and excercise, the guy would be a monster in today's field. To go even further, teams worked w/ VHS at the time. A play wasn't a Google search away that you could watch at 60/fps. I’ll tell you the biggest difference between LeBron and Bird. LeBron goes to a new team and says ok I can’t win with these losers. I need this player and that player and one of those players and we can win. Bird went to a dead last team as the only addition and never once complained about his teammates. Instead he took that dead last team to first his rookie year and made his teammates Hall of famers. Celtics had 29 wins before Bird got there and 61 wins his rookie year. The amazing thing is that was as many games as they had won in the two seasons before Bird got there. So yes Bird is way above LeBron or KD ether one. No disrespect meant to ether of these greats

Bird would destroy this era’s league in all stats. There is no comparison between how physical the game use to be compared to the weak sauce of today’s league. You barely breathe on a shooter and a foul is called…..back then it was pretty much street rules “no blood, no foul”. Add in now if they’re shooting a 3 point shot they get three free throws….Bird would be averaging 40 points a game. Bird was well above 90% free throw shooter, he’d average 20 points a game just off of free throws. In the 60 point game he had against the Hawks, Bird went 15/16 from the free point line, and he had many games where he went 12 for 12 or 11 of 11 from the line. Bird hustled more than any other player ever has. He never quit playing whether he had the ball or not, he was always moving and always a threat.
Two great stories about Bird you need to find….1) When the dream team played the college kids….Rodney Rogers got schooled by Bird, won’t ruin it for you, you need to see it, Jamal Mashburn tells it best. 2) John Stockton said right before his first game against Bird (in Utah), that Bird walked past their bench saying he felt good that night and felt like he was going to get 43 points. 4 or 5 minutes in to the 3 quarter Bird scored his 43rd point and checked himself out of the game, so he ended with exactly 43 points like he said he would.

Bro, I be honest. I grew up watching Bird, MJ, Magic, etc. And I am from Cleveland, I watched Lebron from rookie year, even seen him in high school playing in the area where I grew up. and I am going to tell you this, you tell me, from all my years watching basketball, you tell me, who would I pick between Lebron, Durant, whatever, I am picking Bird 10/10 times. Lebron, Durant, they are amazing too. Bird is not athletic like them, but one thing Bird has over Lebron, durant and pretty much every player in NBA today, Bird had heart, balls to the wall, no fear, trash talk you down and back it up and nothing you can do to stop it. AND Bird had that killer instinct, give me the ball with 2 seconds left, I will make it and send us home with a win, you never hear those words come out of Lebron, Durant, etc. Bird would kill everyone in NBA today if he was playing in his prime. no one could touch him. I guarantee, Bird would average triple double every game with ease. Only player I can see that could match Bird would be the NBA true MVP Jokic.

KD is good but Larry is just on another level. These young guys do not realize the greatness of Larry Bird. He was appropriated the brand " Legend" by his peers, and the media for a reason. He is "Larry Legend" when being talked about. As for the rest of the NBA players, past and present whose game is legendary, that adjective is just kind of generic now.

In the 60point game when Levingston n others cheering Larry they don't say the entire crowd was cheering for Larry. Watch the complete game and you will hear the crowd cheering Larry Larry Larry. When Larry Bird was young he always played with black people at the basketball court near his house... so I'd think thats where he got his trash talking and didn't like when white people guarded him. Idk just a guess. But he did always play with black guys from his area. Thats 100% true story Bird growing up playing with all black people.

I just really, really, really don't think people understand how much talent existed in the 80s. Plus, KD never had guys dragging him by the jersey like Bird. In today's offensive league, I think the legends of old would be getting a lot more points. If Westbrook can do it, they are definitely much much better. I'd entertain other ideas. I mean, nobody can top Wilt as the GOAT, but I think it's a lot closer between Bird, Magic, and Jordan than people think. I'm still cool with whatever anyone wants to go with, but these modern players? Man, they are trash by comparison. I don't think any of them no what it's like to carry a team. They all just partner up. I'll give Curry a pass because it's not his fault that the Warriors were great and I do think that Curry is much better than the rest. That being said, I'm not putting any guys that need to switch teams every couple of years on a list with GOATs that carried their teams like Bird.
