I liked your video, the efficiency of it and the gorgeous views from the window. Therefore, I subscribed already, even though it was only my first time watching a video from your channel. As a former insider, I can confirm to you airlines only cared about profit even before covid, so I can't imagine now! The catering is notoriously limited in North America, and also notoriously bad in any economy class of any airline these days. However, the food you got for breakfast is not appropriate for breakfast. I think at this point, they should really offer to pay for your meal rather than trick people into thinking they serve a meal when they don't.
As an Austrian, I often fly Austrian. I totally agree with you about the catering. It was way better before Lufthansa took over full control but on the other hand, Austrian was not profitable back then. The strangest thing I experienced was on a flight to Odessa last year when they didn't serve any food for Covid security reasons. Well, unless you paid for a meal or flew business class. Obviously spending money prevents contagion.
Great Video! As someone who works in aviation, it's a commonly known fact that, on the whole, catering units in the US are behind Europe and Asia on quality, variety and innovation. Catering on shorter flights is often done on the 1st leg in the airline's hub with the outbound and return sectors loaded, so your meal from LHR to VIE was actually prepared and loaded in VIE, giving consistency in quality across Short Haul Networks. Long Haul catering however is at the mercy of the outstation provider and as other viewers point out the menus and provider will likely be the same as Lufthansa whose catering is nothing special on Long Haul routes. As an example BAs catering out of LHR significantly improved when they signed a new contract with Do&Co (coincidentally an Austrian company) however the catering on return sectors is noticeably inferior in terms of ingredients, options and presentation.
I can say that I had one of the most pleasurable flights on Austrain airlines. Being narrowbody or widebody. The last time I flew OS it was a CDG-VIE-BKK route in Business Class. The crew was amazing and the food was also way better than LH or LX.
Well, business class is a complete different world :) I'm always talking on the class the majority of us travels: economy class. Glad that you had a great experience :)

I'm afraid that, these days, it's less about the quality of experience for passengers (with a few exceptions) and more about maximising profits and dividends for shareholders. We flew British Airways from Gatwick to Faro in Club Europe recently and the food was pretty awful too (service was mediocre also). I'm considerably older than you and can remember having a hot breakfast served on a flight from Gatwick to Manchester back in the 1990s (we were only in the air for about 40 mins). On a flight from Edinburgh to Heathrow (on my birthday) in 1997, I was plied with so much fizzy wine that they pretty much had to roll me off the aircraft at LHR. Catering (and service) has declined significantly in recent years - I used to really enjoy flying, but now much prefer train or ship.
I agree with you. However, there are still a couple of airlines that offer good economy-class service in Europe: Air France and KLM. If it wouldn't be for the required airline variety that a channel like this one needs, I wouldn't have any reason to fly the Lufthansa Group airlines...
I fly Austrian Airlines from Toronto to Viene and return for past 20+ years. I do it because it's direct fly and aside of them only Air Canada flies directly to Vienna. I fly it because it's I'm less likely to loose my luggage or don't have to be worried about connecting flight However, that's the only advantage to this choice. If you're flying Economy - it's almost no communication with crew. Flight attendants interact with passengers super minimally which creates strange atmosphere..Food used to be quite good but for past 5 years it's nothing what Austrian cousine has to offer outside of plane. ( Austrian food is supper yummy!). I don't know what happened but as I already mentioned - if it wouldn't be the only other option of direct flight from Toronto to Vienna aside of AC, I wouldn't bother. Their pricing on this route is also quite high and even though AC is known for being expensive option for flying, Austrian Airlines managed to beat them!
the music you put during the sunset and sunrise really adds value and it creates to me at least goosebumps. I think the best views are during sunset and sunrise and cant understand people who are sleeping

Thank you for a great video. I agree with all that you say. The Lufthansa Group appear to be continuing the Covid era on board service, which is now ridiculous, especially for a flight of 9 hours ! Sadly there is not a single European airline who can match the on board service of Emirates. They continue to set the standards !
i flew Swiss air last month to South Africa, wow wow what a trip,but the breakfast,if one can call it breakfast, a dried-out bun, smaller than a tennis all, small piece of cheese, small cream cheese and a juice, Lufthansa i dont fly as thy are expensive for the same trip to Johannesburg South Africa and food is not much better
All the onboard services on the Lufthansa Group airlines is declining every year... if it wouldn't be because I want to have good variery of airlines on the channel, I wouldn't be flying with them... there's no reason to choose them before Air France or KLM (if you want European airlines) or Emirates, Qatar...

I love the part about “ don’t expect any high quality food in this area”. That seems to sum up most airports in the U.S. except for a First class lounge and that’s not guaranteed either. Food in economy is bad on many airlines however the so-called breakfast you had was a joke, absolutely unacceptable. Flying these days in economy long haul is no fun , so I spend the extra and go business. I’m lucky that I can get a very good deal from where I am because I know the U.S.-Europe route is ridiculously expensive.
It's something that I've seen in the majority of US airports. Food quality is not the best, but particularly in this terminal of Chicago, everything was just "fast food". In 2023 we'll try Delta One class, hopefully that one will be much better! :D
@@OnBoardHD I’ll watch out for it. Tried Delta P.E. long haul a few years back, total waste of the extra money. Seat was only slightly larger than Economy and food/service appalling. I’ve heard they’ve improved since then.
I don't know what you're complaining about - the onboard service came with the prerequisite turbulence which renders taste to a lower domain of sensation :)
I agree. The Service in the Eco is still a desaster. I hope they change the service back to a good standart. Austrian in particular has always been praised for its service.
I rather enjoy your videos because they are always positive and informative. This one not so much. However, your criticisms were understandable. Been to Vienna once and I rather liked it. One of my fav city in Europe.

I have flown 3 times round trip from NYC (Newark and JFK) to Vienna in the past 2 years in Economy on Austrian. Had the same exact experience with the food and the service. They served the same food on all 6 flights - pasta with vegetables and mushrooms. Good, but one choice and nothing else. And always the same muffin for breakfast. Prior to a few months ago, they also required the NK95/KF94 mask unlike any other airline, which made flying even less enjoyable (try sleeping in that thing). The only thing that made this experience acceptable for me was the city of Vienna which is just amazing in every day and this is the only airline that flies direct from the NYC area to Vienna. But it is remarkable how less luxurious, if one can use that word, flying in the Austrian economy cabin, has become. They have always been know for great food. Now it's just bland. Sad.

Thanks for the video! You are right, that meal service is night and day. It makes no sense. One thing you said at the beginning was there was no great food options in the food court, but at 1:35 I saw Tortas by Rick Bayless, and that place has some real higher end delicious sandwiches offered. Check them out next time and you will be surprised!
Very nice views from the sunset. Yes, of course is the service not good in the LH group. The breakfast service was extremely bad. I think they should change something.... Hopefully they will do it.
I haven't been on any Lufthansa Group longhaul flight since Covid, but the catering is truely a shame. There are a handful of other airlines in Europe who can provide better service, even for a more reasonable price... Nevertheless, the arrival looked amazing! :D
I was flying Austrian in 2019 from VIE to LAX and I remember that pasta was inedible, and I regretted not choosing chicken I understand there was no choice here? Maybe it's just they don't know how to make pasta in better way?;) For breakfast there should be at least a better sandwich and if necessary a muffin, maybe some yoghurt? Great TR!!

August 2023 Austrian A320 Berlin - Wien. Service one cup of Water and one piece of Chocolade. To sit on the aircrafts garden chair, cost 14€ extra. Never ever!
Wow i flew Austrian back in 2019/2020 and i was pretty satisfied with their service, but what im seeing now is a shocker, and im about to fly Chicago - Vienna in a few months.
I thought the meal service was barely adequate until I saw that "breakfast." That was no breakfast. A long flight requires proper meals at least. This is the kind of mini snack served on a two hour domestic flight. What were they thinking?
I always enjoy the trips you take!😉 Are you thinking of going to other cities-countries that you haven't been to? Such as Australia (Sydney, Melbourne), Brazil (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro), Singapore, etc.
2nd comment - that vintage Austrian breakfast looked amazing! I would pay 20 euros now for it no question. In fact, recently, on an Air Canada flight from Winnipeg to Montreal I discovered it is possible to buy a business class meal in economy. So I did. It was not the greatest (but I knew this already) - however it was hot and tasty enough and a lot better than the garbage they were selling as food, which was the alternative. I think airlines underestimate how much people appreciate good food. Get your game sorted out already! Even in business class since covid is absolutely shameful food which is not worth the plate it is "served" on. I would pay extra for a good meal on a plane - and I'm sure not the only one.
Lufthansa continues to treat Austrian like an unloved stepchild…old aircraft, subpar onboard catering, uncomfortable seats, and very limited long-haul destinations. I wish Austrian could take a better example from Finnair or Swiss.
Swiss is not anymore a good example in my opinion. You can feel already in their service the "Lufthansa Group effect". The service is declining as well. Finnair is definitely a good one. Even with all the difficulties they have,. they still try offer a really good service in economy.
When PANAM went bankrupt in 1991, their 21 years old Boeing 747-100 fleet looked very old inside and outside. This 23 years old Triple Seven looks very new inside and outside 🙂

I flew Cancun to Vienna 2 months ago on Austrian on a 777 and service was completely different, there was a pre dinner snack and drink service, dinner was really nice and they served all the warm bread you wanted, we got snacks and sandwiches all the flight and breakfast was a warm meal with eggs and sausage, it was amazing for a 10 hour flight.Where I was disappointed was on the 12 hour Air France a350 flight from Paris to Lima back home, food was terrible (fish for lunch and a disgusting snack box for pre landing), so you can see there are worse things than Austrian
The 777 is one my favourite wide bodied aircraft which has flown me to many continents around the world. It's such a well built powerful aircraft.. But can be difficult to sleep in when seated in the aft due to exhaust rumble from those giant engines. Thanks again for another great trip report. A better alternative to other trip reports that insist on using awful cameras.

I'll be taking Austrian (code-share with United) on the same route but a different flight (? - it's a UA #) in May when I end up in Jordan and Egypt for vacation. I was originally booked on Qatar, but the tour company found a scheduling discrepancy. Taking Lufthansa back home (STL)
Sad to see the Economy Class service onboard Lufthansa group airlines declining. Offering only one option for a hot meal and a small cold breakfast is a huge no no for a long haul flight. I truly hope that SWISS wouldn't reach the same state of decline in their service as well :/
I'm sorry to inform you that SWISS is following exactly the same path. For now they offer 2 options for the warm meal and the food in general has bettter quality... but looks like the tendency is the same as in Austrian. Glad that you've enjoyed the video :)

I don’t consider your discussion about the service to be inappropriate. Your are doing a trip report including critiques. That said, the pandemic has given companies and employees an excuse to not do their jobs. PS I enjoy all your information about various details including geography. Best!
When looking at the breakfast service I can totally understand your opinion because that muffin is everything else but not a breakfast. On my LAX-VIE flight in September 2022 Austrian has performed far better! What I also want to mention is their outstanding food quality on flights departing from Vienna. Don't say that LH Group offers bad catering in general as both Swiss and Austrian usually offer great onboard catering in all classes. US catering will always be below average.
I'm really wondering if the service when flying Austrian FROM Vienna is much better as you and others told me in the comments. I will try to book something on the Boeing 767 and give it a try... I'm sorry to tell you that SWISS is starting to follow a similar path as Austrian... one month ago on my flight from JFK to ZRH they gave me the exact same "breakfast" as in this flight.
@@OnBoardHD I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Swiss as well...there must have been some big changes in the catering system between my last Swiss A330 flight and yours. On my LX flight from Miami to Zürich there was a great breakfast service an hour before landing.
Thanks for the sharing. The food looks cheap and lazy for an airline which advertises itself as offering “fine food”. But I also think passengers have more power than they think - do not fly Austrian economy class if this is the service they offer on a 9hr flight and always tell the airline that their service onboard did not meet your expectations.

Even as German I totally agree with you, that the Lufthansa Group offers the poorest service of all airlines that I know, it´s a shame but it´s the reason, that Lufthansa may not call themselves "5 Star Airline". I always look for other airlines, Lufthansa Group has turned into a No Go Group.

Sin duda las aerolíneas del Grupo AirFrance-KLM están a años luz de las del Grupo Lufthansa. No hay comparación posible. PD: estuve en Panamá de vacaciones hace unos meses y me gustó mucho. Tanto la parte del Canal (estuvimos en Aguasclaras, como la ciudad antigua de Panama City :).

I flew Austrian once across the Pond in 2018 and service was pretty good, Lufthansa one week later was not. So experience is not the same across Lufthansa group.

They stopped serving food on inter European flights. But they still offer a chicken schnitzel on Austrian Holidays flights which surprised me.

i flew Swiss air last month to South Africa, wow wow what a trip,but the breakfast,if one can call it breakfast, a dried-out bun, smaller than a tennis all, small piece of cheese, small cream cheese and a juice, Lufthansa i dont fly as thy are expensive for the same trip to Johannesburg South Africa and food is not much better
Every US airline now beats (quite handedly) LH group’s catering.
All the onboard services on the Lufthansa Group airlines is declining every year... if it wouldn't be because I want to have good variery of airlines on the channel, I wouldn't be flying with them... there's no reason to choose them before Air France or KLM (if you want European airlines) or Emirates, Qatar...
I think Turkish matches them but perhaps you weren't thinking of them as European. :)

I love the part about “ don’t expect any high quality food in this area”. That seems to sum up most airports in the U.S. except for a First class lounge and that’s not guaranteed either. Food in economy is bad on many airlines however the so-called breakfast you had was a joke, absolutely unacceptable. Flying these days in economy long haul is no fun , so I spend the extra and go business. I’m lucky that I can get a very good deal from where I am because I know the U.S.-Europe route is ridiculously expensive.
It's something that I've seen in the majority of US airports. Food quality is not the best, but particularly in this terminal of Chicago, everything was just "fast food".
In 2023 we'll try Delta One class, hopefully that one will be much better! :D
@@OnBoardHD I’ll watch out for it. Tried Delta P.E. long haul a few years back, total waste of the extra money. Seat was only slightly larger than Economy and food/service appalling. I’ve heard they’ve improved since then.
I agree, I have flown many good airlines from american cities and often the experience was destroyed by the catering.

I agree. The Service in the Eco is still a desaster. I hope they change the service back to a good standart. Austrian in particular has always been praised for its service.
I rather enjoy your videos because they are always positive and informative. This one not so much. However, your criticisms were understandable. Been to Vienna once and I rather liked it. One of my fav city in Europe.

Flew Austrian this summer through Schwechat airport. It was a mess. I was also yelled at by a ground agent for asking her a question! LOL.

I have flown 3 times round trip from NYC (Newark and JFK) to Vienna in the past 2 years in Economy on Austrian. Had the same exact experience with the food and the service. They served the same food on all 6 flights - pasta with vegetables and mushrooms. Good, but one choice and nothing else. And always the same muffin for breakfast. Prior to a few months ago, they also required the NK95/KF94 mask unlike any other airline, which made flying even less enjoyable (try sleeping in that thing). The only thing that made this experience acceptable for me was the city of Vienna which is just amazing in every day and this is the only airline that flies direct from the NYC area to Vienna.
But it is remarkable how less luxurious, if one can use that word, flying in the Austrian economy cabin, has become. They have always been know for great food. Now it's just bland. Sad.

Thanks for the video! You are right, that meal service is night and day. It makes no sense. One thing you said at the beginning was there was no great food options in the food court, but at 1:35 I saw Tortas by Rick Bayless, and that place has some real higher end delicious sandwiches offered. Check them out next time and you will be surprised!

I haven't been on any Lufthansa Group longhaul flight since Covid, but the catering is truely a shame. There are a handful of other airlines in Europe who can provide better service, even for a more reasonable price...

I was flying Austrian in 2019 from VIE to LAX and I remember that pasta was inedible, and I regretted not choosing chicken I understand there was no choice here?
Maybe it's just they don't know how to make pasta in better way?;) For breakfast there should be at least a better sandwich and if necessary a muffin, maybe some yoghurt? Great TR!!

Well, this is the level of the Lufthansa Group catering in 2023... don't expect anything fancy at all... Sadly, expect the worst and you won't be disappointed.
August 2023 Austrian A320 Berlin - Wien. Service one cup of Water and one piece of Chocolade. To sit on the aircrafts garden chair, cost 14€ extra.

I thought the meal service was barely adequate until I saw that "breakfast." That was no breakfast. A long flight requires proper meals at least. This is the kind of mini snack served on a two hour domestic flight. What were they thinking?

2nd comment - that vintage Austrian breakfast looked amazing! I would pay 20 euros now for it no question. In fact, recently, on an Air Canada flight from Winnipeg to Montreal I discovered it is possible to buy a business class meal in economy. So I did. It was not the greatest (but I knew this already) - however it was hot and tasty enough and a lot better than the garbage they were selling as food, which was the alternative. I think airlines underestimate how much people appreciate good food. Get your game sorted out already! Even in business class since covid is absolutely shameful food which is not worth the plate it is "served" on. I would pay extra for a good meal on a plane - and I'm sure not the only one.

I took austrian air in 2011,I remember they had meal service that was pretty good
Lufthansa continues to treat Austrian like an unloved stepchild…old aircraft, subpar onboard catering, uncomfortable seats, and very limited long-haul destinations. I wish Austrian could take a better example from Finnair or Swiss.
Swiss is not anymore a good example in my opinion. You can feel already in their service the "Lufthansa Group effect". The service is declining as well.
Finnair is definitely a good one. Even with all the difficulties they have,. they still try offer a really good service in economy.

I flew Cancun to Vienna 2 months ago on Austrian on a 777 and service was completely different, there was a pre dinner snack and drink service, dinner was really nice and they served all the warm bread you wanted, we got snacks and sandwiches all the flight and breakfast was a warm meal with eggs and sausage, it was amazing for a 10 hour flight.Where I was disappointed was on the 12 hour Air France a350 flight from Paris to Lima back home, food was terrible (fish for lunch and a disgusting snack box for pre landing), so you can see there are worse things than Austrian
The 777 is one my favourite wide bodied aircraft which has flown me to many continents around the world. It's such a well built powerful aircraft.. But can be difficult to sleep in when seated in the aft due to exhaust rumble from those giant engines. Thanks again for another great trip report. A better alternative to other trip reports that insist on using awful cameras.

I'll be taking Austrian (code-share with United) on the same route but a different flight (? - it's a UA #) in May when I end up in Jordan and Egypt for vacation. I was originally booked on Qatar, but the tour company found a scheduling discrepancy. Taking Lufthansa back home (STL)
Sad to see the Economy Class service onboard Lufthansa group airlines declining. Offering only one option for a hot meal and a small cold breakfast is a huge no no for a long haul flight.
I truly hope that SWISS wouldn't reach the same state of decline in their service as well :/
I'm sorry to inform you that SWISS is following exactly the same path. For now they offer 2 options for the warm meal and the food in general has bettter quality... but looks like the tendency is the same as in Austrian.

When looking at the breakfast service I can totally understand your opinion because that muffin is everything else but not a breakfast. On my LAX-VIE flight in September 2022 Austrian has performed far better! What I also want to mention is their outstanding food quality on flights departing from Vienna. Don't say that LH Group offers bad catering in general as both Swiss and Austrian usually offer great onboard catering in all classes. US catering will always be below average.
I'm really wondering if the service when flying Austrian FROM Vienna is much better as you and others told me in the comments. I will try to book something on the Boeing 767 and give it a try...
I'm sorry to tell you that SWISS is starting to follow a similar path as Austrian... one month ago on my flight from JFK to ZRH they gave me the exact same "breakfast" as in this flight.
@@OnBoardHD I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Swiss as well...there must have been some big changes in the catering system between my last Swiss A330 flight and yours. On my LX flight from Miami to Zürich there was a great breakfast service an hour before landing.
Two months ago I flew to Newark and back. Same meal on both flights.
Thanks for the sharing. The food looks cheap and lazy for an airline which advertises itself as offering “fine food”. But I also think passengers have more power than they think - do not fly Austrian economy class if this is the service they offer on a 9hr flight and always tell the airline that their service onboard did not meet your expectations.

Even as German I totally agree with you, that the Lufthansa Group offers the poorest service of all airlines that I know, it´s a shame but it´s the reason, that Lufthansa may not call themselves "5 Star Airline".
I always look for other airlines, Lufthansa Group has turned into a No Go Group.

Sin duda las aerolíneas del Grupo AirFrance-KLM están a años luz de las del Grupo Lufthansa. No hay comparación posible.

All your breakfast examples were of pre-ordered breakfasts. Did you pre order this time? If not then you shouldnt put these examples.
Austrian cancelled all the pre-ordered food. There's no option to do it.

I flew with Austrian a number of times between LHR, Vienna and Salzburg with fantastic catering, but this was back in the eighties.

I flew Austrian once across the Pond in 2018 and service was pretty good, Lufthansa one week later was not. So experience is not the same across Lufthansa group.

I successfully avoid LH Group since 2018. It is hard when living in Frankfurt.
