I love how all the other kills on the film were quick and clean but when he kills turpin, it's messy and angry, almost like he's forgotten everything he's been practicing for this moment because he's so angry
The way Alan Rickman does his “realization face” is so perfect. It’s so subtle yet enough to show a true mixture of emotions within a couple seconds. It’s just so awesome.
I love the fact that he practiced so much to make his skills with the knife perfect for his revenge and when he finally got it he made a mess and forced revenge in the most un practiced method and the most Savage way ever
The judge falsely accused Benjamin of a crime and sends him away. Then he rapes Benjamin's wife, causing her to attempt suicide. He raises Benjamin's daughter and when the daughter is grown up, he now wants to seduce her. Yeah, I'd be pretty enraged too.
1:12 Johnny and Alan’s acting here is just superb. That subtle smile on Sweeney’s face over his prey. And that very small gasp the Judge does before speaking as he realizes who’s about to kill him.
That one line: "Sit, sir, sit." The way Sweeney's voice gets the tiniest bit of happiness, even though its probably manipulative, IS THE CUTEST THING EVER
@@kurlaki7835 Yes they are, but Johnny Depp adopted vastly different voices for the two. It's just at that moment his Wonka voice seemed to be slipping through
I absolutely love their harmonies around 0:44 - Rickman’s voice is so deep and gravelly while Depp’s is soft yet persistent - they balance each other so well!
I have a question not related with the video: I am directing a movie with ponies and I need a full version of the "MorphVox Pro" which allows the user to change his voic to sound like a demon or like a girl (no kidding). If you own this software, is there any way you can send it to me?
1:10 Rickmans acting is so good in this scene you can tell that it’s the judges first time really looking at Sweeney. (He’s looked at him many times but never truly looked yk. Like you can look at the smart worker you get your food from every Tuesday and still never truly see them even if you have a whole conversation)
I know right. I mean initially he was just casually jabbing at the side of the guy's neck but all of a sudden he just slashes his throat. Completely unexpected.
0:38 might be just me but the way he holds the razor to the sky and the melancholic way he sings "they still are there" just holds so much emotion like he's thinking about his wife and his love for her. And remembering why he's doing all this
I love the mixed emotions on Turpins face. He shows anger and fear at that brief moment realizing that a man he sent away came back, a man he felt he could relate to only to feel betrayed and scared at what was about to happen.
01:14 Turpin: (realizes that Sweeney is actually Benjamin Barker) Benjamin Barker! Sweeney: (goes apeshit) BENJAMIN BARKER!!! It was at this moment Turpin knew...he fucked up. Beyond fucked up standards.
I don't know which is worse for Alan Rickman, getting shot by Bruce Willis and falling off a building or getting stabbed by Johnny Depp and falling down a hole.
Well, I had throath attacked by nagini . I could not even tell lily how much I love her . Just worked for Dumbledore. I wish Mr Potter spoke to my portrait after seeing my memory.
This is coming from my heart, this is truly one of my favorite Musical films and Horror films in general. It's probably the 1st Horror/Drama film I've ever seen and without it, I probably wouldn't be the big Horror fan that I am today, so a I have a deep love for this movie! Johnny Depp is a legend! R.I.P. Alan Rickman...
In my opinion, the movie has always done this moment best. I love when the music swells right as Turpin is processing what’s going on, before he finally realizes who is about to shave him. On stage, the dialogue here has always seemed a bit rushed to me. This was The only time I felt we got to enjoy Sweeney’s big revenge moment the whole story had been building up to.
kevin willems Interesting, also, the film colouring was desaturated to fit in with the dark, heavy tone of the story and characters, so the fake blood they used was coloured orange so that it would render correctly.
And I also know what a squib is. At first I thought you were talking about a non-magic person born to magic parents, but then I remembered it's a small-scale explosive used for special effects in the movies, especially for effects like stabbing and shooting. And the idea isn't even very new. In Tudor times, a popular entertainment was to watch people apparently stab themselves without dying. In fact, they wore a stab-proof shield under their clothes, but the knife punctured a hidden bag of animal blood. (One drunken entertainer once forgot the shield, stabbed himself and died. The audience thought it was the best trick they'd ever seen!) Sorry. I was rambling there.
1:13 Alan Rickman realized to his horror who that man really is. 1:15 Alan Rickman accepted his fate. Man this guy shows the intention so clearly within such a short time span. RIP man
You can just see Sweeney holding his excitement back about finally getting to kill the one guy that ruined his whole life. Like a little kid impatiently waiting to open a Christmas present.
This is a fantastic kill. The rest of Todd's kills are smooth and elegant, but you can see and feel the raw hatred and satisfaction in just _killing_ that Todd loves so much. He didn't end it in song. This is the demon we've been waiting for.
1:17 I hate the judge. His look. His look of anger. Not scared that he’s gonna get his throat slashed. Nooooo. He’s angry. This makes me hate the judge so much. Like he doesn’t deserve to be angry. The judge wasn’t the one who had everything taken away from him. It was Sweeney. Only he deserves to be angry, not the judge. Also by the way I hate the character of the judge, not the movie itself. Acting was brilliant. Would love to see more movies like this. Alan Rickman was a great actor. So I’m not hating on Alan himself, I’m hating on the judge. Alan is amazing.
I get what you mean, the judge being the antagonist whose motivations of lust for Lucy, and then Johanna shows his ruthless, libidinous character. That’s why we hate him so much. And Alan Rickman played that villain role perfectly👍
You know, when he's really trying, Tim Burton is one hell of a film maker. The overall composition of this film is absolutely superb. Shame he hasn't done anything like this for so long.
I'm still in denial that Alan rickman is gone. My mind physically cannot comprehend that he has passed on. He played all the role's he was chosen for perfectly. May he Rest In Peace.
I shave with a straight razor and I know for a fact one will open you up like tissue paper. I still have a small scar on my cheek from when I was learning to use it. But like Sweeney said "The closest I ever gave". Once you have learned to shave with one it's something I say every man should know how to do
It'd been a while since I've seen Sweeney Todd, and when I saw Alan Rickman - I literally choked on the orange slice I was eating for one brief second. A very scary second that was. ... And he can sing? Oh swoon. My two favorite actors in one room.... ah..
One of my favorite things about this movie is how he goes from wanting to be with his family again and wanting revenge on those who took them from him, He becomes so focused on revenge that he kills his wife and almost his daughter without even realizing it.
Had the judge not barged in at the exact moment, Sweeney would likely have spared the strange woman's (Lucy) life. The problem was, he needed her out of his shop before Turpin appeared. Sweeney may have taken a few lives, but he's not a cold-hearted brute.
When this first came out, I didn't have any real idea or appreciation of who Alan Rickman was as an actor. Now that I know better, hearing him sing is just wonderful and makes me sad all over again that he's gone. Hard to believe it's been five years already.
Rip Alan Rickman, you played this part so perfectly.

1:18 the sound of unadulterated rage, he genuinely sounds like a man who had everything taken from him and can’t control his anger any longer

So in this scene. Grindelwald Killed Snape.
Hhaahha yeah

In the exact same way Voldemort killed Snape, but instead of a razor, A SNAKE.

The way his voice cracks when he says “ how about a shave”
