CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) discusses one of his favorite songs from Huey Lewis & the News, and then murders Paul Allen (Jared Leto) with an axe.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Bret Easton Ellis's dark and violent satire of America in the 1980s is brought to the screen in this unsettling drama with blackly comic overtones. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy Wall Street financier, is pursuing his own lucrative career with his father's firm. Bateman is the prototypical yuppie, obsessed with success, fashion, and style. He is also a serial killer who murders, rapes, and mutilates both strangers and acquaintances without provocation or reason. Donald Kimble (Willem Dafoe), a police detective, questions Bateman about the disappearance of Paul Allen (Jared Leto), whom Patrick murdered several days earlier. As Kimble stays on Bateman's trail, Bateman's mask of studied, distant cool begins to fall apart. American Psycho also features Reese Witherspoon as Bateman's girlfriend, as well as Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny, and Guinevere Turner; the latter also co-authored the screenplay. Controversy followed the production from the start, when speculation that Leonardo Di Caprio would play Bateman sparked concerns that he would lure preteens to an R-rated movie. Di Caprio soon bowed out of the project, and original leading man Bale was reinstated. Later, a group of Toronto residents attempted to block filming in that city after Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo claimed that Ellis's novel inspired his murder spree.

Patrick Bateman hitting Paul with an axe is a subtle hint he doesn't like him. Amazing directing.
Thats the moment that bateman turns into the american psycho
Oh really? No way
This is the moment when Bateman became Marcus Halberstram
You can tell by the way the axe just glistens and shines while resting elegantly upon the floor that you will die in style. The solid light birch handle gives it the perfect balance of style, sophistication, and masculinity while maintaining its function as a tool to tame the harshest of wildernesses. Empires have been built and destroyed with pieces like this.

this is one form of psychopath manipulation( the most common ).
Patrick had to ingratiate himself so as not to arouse suspicion. Namely, he introduced himself as a caring and friendly person (of course he is not).
Yeah, if you do not take it in context, it looks pretty sweet.
Aren't all drunk people like children?

@@antonchigurh4305.... Holy crap 😳
@@antonchigurh4305 which is way more accurate than dying after one hit
@@antonchigurh4305 and that's tame compared to most other kills in the book
The book is so much worse... I read it in highschool before the movie's release. The book's content resulted in my avoidance of the movie for a looooong time even though gore, violence, etc. had little impact on me in those days. I loved reading disturbing horror (still do, especially Junji Ito) and could handle blood, guts, and violence in film or television (now it depends on context). Yet despite my strong stomach this book made me feel *deeply* uncomfortable. The torture/death scenes were *beyond* disturbing and I _did not_ want to see them onscreen.
Eventually I realized certain parts of the book couldn't be in a movie with an "R" rating, even considering America's comfort with gratuitous violence (no offense intended: I'm 'Merican myself).
When I watched the movie I found it to be surprisingly hilarious! The onscreen violence and disturbing moments were nothin' compared to countless passages in the book (the sewer rat scene, the chainsaw torture while the woman stays conscious, cannibalism, the car battery hooked up to Christine, necrophilia... there's a lot more but I'll stop here).
Bale was *amazing* in the film: menacing and funny at the same time, and also able to switch between the two in an instant. I'm glad his role wasn't written _or_ performed so he'd simply be a live version of the book's Bateman.
Edited because: i duz spelin an Grammer realy reely gud.! 🙃
The thing that struck me about this scene is how much Christian Bale's voice, mannerisms, and overall energy remind me of peak Jim Carey.

Everything about Bale's performance is so precise, calculated, and reeks of artifice yet it's always believable. Ugh, so good.
Plot twist he's actually a serial killer he's just been acting like he's an actor
It’s funny because his co-stars (back when it was filmed and released) said he was the worst actor in the movie and that his acting was atrocious. They ate their words and even one of the actors told Bale they all thought he was bad and they apologized because Bale ended up becoming an incredible actor.
@@lionmountain804 his performance was astonishing. That's the problem with critics, they have an opinion which they're entitled to. However if you start believing their opinions you could truly hurt yourself.

@@lionmountain804 Guess you didn't see him as a kid in Kenneth Branagh's Henry V (1989).
I think it’s universally accepted that Bale is a generational level actor, but when I heard that he ad-libbed that incredibly perfect goofy dance move into the scene.. I was just blown away. First off, try doing it in the mirror. Quick fact: You can’t. You’ll be able to do the motion, but it will look clunky. This guy just came outta nowhere with this and did it flawless lol. So perfect to the character too
Something tells me he probably has done this dance while making snacks in the kitchen or doing various tasks around the house.
Funny enough, Bale's moonwalking impro was the only thing that Bret Easton Ellis, the novel's writer disliked about the movie and Bale's portrayal (but even he admitted later that he's grown fond of it over time).
Christian Bale and Sean Penn, #1 and #1.5, rest of the so called actors come a billion leagues below. The worst of all time who comes another 500 trillion leagues below is Keanu Reeves
It's not that difficult of a dance, it's just swinging your hips and arms. it's impressive for improv, but it's not a very impressive dance move on its own.

I like how he slowly expresses more and more emotion until he kills him.
I love how he covers his suit but doesn't mind dirtying his face. The face, the symbol of his humanity, can be sullied and stained without any care whatsoever, but the suit, the symbol of his social role, must be preserved. His colleagues wouldn't notice bloody hands or a bloody face, and if they did, they might even celebrate them, but a bloody suit is an affront to the order of things.
I love the little details in this film about what is perceived as more important to the characters.
Another one is in the first scene when Patrick is introducing himself, he mentions where he lives before telling us his name, showing that he thinks his home is more important to his identity than who he is as a person.

his being a pretentious, snobby music nerd about the blandest, most mainstream top 40's music was such a great personality trait for his character
You don’t get it though, he’s not actually a nerd about the music. This is rehearsed small talk for him, this is his imitation of how he thinks normal people have a conversation, down to picking the most main stream music he can. Batemen is supposed to represent someone who see’s and understand what the American dream is, and to appear like he has everything that would fulfill a person in life, but it’s all an act to hide how hollow/empty he is of emotion.
@@samadams8533 It wouldn't surprise me if Bateman actually just dislikes music in general.
@@samadams8533 that's a valid interpretation, but we know that he does, on some level, enjoy the music he gushes about. You like David Bowie? His early work was a little too psychedelic for my taste, but when Hunky Dory came out in '71, I think he really came into the mainstream, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a huge kaleidoscopic array of pop styles, and a more intelligent approach to songwriting that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Freddie Mercury and Gary Numan, but I think Bowie had a far more flamboyant , androgynous sense of style. In '72, Bowie released this, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spider From Mars, his most critically acclaimed album. I think his undisputed masterpieces are "Suffragette city" and "Starman." The songs are so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. Bale's maturity & brilliance in this role are not that surprising if you know a little bit about Bale's life. Christian had very unusual parents and upbringing, his family has seen quite a few things. This means that the child has contact with various, exciting people and different environments from the beginning, and can analyze the entire spectrum of human behaviors.
His grandfather was an RAF pilot, and his father, who was born in South Africa, for a time a commercial pilot, then he had his own businesses, then he was also an activist in various fields. The whole family moved around the world and had a nomadic lifestyle. Christian's mother was a circus dancer and clown. Christian grew up in a circus.
Bale almost NEVER talks about it, but he did maybe 2-3 times, including a few years ago, at the time of the Vice movie premiere, on the HappySadConfused movie podcast, and it was fascinating to listen to him talk about his life in a circus!! In a circus you have contact with acting all the time, it's all about performance, and you live with interesting people who know life. Acting appears to be Bale's destiny. He simply changed one circus for another, one stage for a larger and more spectacular one - the world of film and Hollywood!!
It's utterly terrifying how Bale just turns off the psychopathic murderer side in the blink of an eye. Seeing him, face covered in blood, just casually and blankly pull out a cigar and take a seat is so unnerving.
only one side of his face is covered. when he turns to sit and smoke, the viewer can see his personality change as he presents the "clean" side of him. the duality of man
I often wish Robert Geisel (Jeffrey Dahmer) used more of a Patrick Bateman style.

It's up there. This movie has so many great scenes. Some of Bales best work I think.
It's overjoyed with Paul for finally noticing something
Christian Bale was channeling his inner Jim Carrey
Yeah gets him drunk and unaware because of his jealousy. Hehe it’s like Patrick is killing a more pathetic version of himself 😅
And as he is starting to vaguely project why he feels unhappy, he kills the person that is essentially captive by drunkenness.
Fun fact: According to the director Jared Leto’s reaction to seeing Christian Bale with an axe was actually genuine because he didn’t actually know Bale was gonna run up to him holding it
I hope that’s true, because it was such a great reaction haha
*"Is that a rain coat?"*
*"YES IT IS! :D"*

Fun little fact. Bale was so much in to this role that he actually murdered those people for authenticity. The director liked it so much that she left it in the movie. It's all about the realism. The things those actors do!
American psycho was directed by a women
@ch3rr No no! Go look it up. Bale really killed people for this role.
@ch3rr How old are you? LeL
@ch3rr Ah, make sense!
this joke was so funny it was said around 30 times in this comment section
Fun fact: this scene was actually meant to end with the 2 friends going out in the rain to chop firewood, but Bale hated the comment Leto made about the chow so much he just decided to improvise and kill Leto without warning. It was eventually written into the story and the movie was renamed from ‘American Business Man’ to ‘American Psycho’. The more you know!
Thank God!
But the movie is based, I thought, on Bret Easton Ellis's book named American Psycho, so what's the big deal about them naming the movie after the book?

I love how Patrick’s emotion just shuts down after raging and murdering Paul Allen. Some movie killers were like just realizing what they’ve done or just sort of took their time to just realized what they have done. But Patrick’s emotion just SHUTS DOWN completely and takes off his raincoat with no emotion in his face whatsoever. Christian Bale’s acting performance is just brilliant

My headcanon is that Patrick hadn't fully decided to kill Paul yet until that little face he made at 0:08. Like "Oh just OKAY? JUST OKAY? That's it, mister, you just lost your living privileges"
I understood that reference
Then you're wrong
I think Paul was doomed the moment he set foot in Patrick's apartment, but it's an interesting reading. The novel plays a lot more with Patrick's emotional lability, his inappropriate emotional reactions in various situations. The film really highlights this in the business card scene, when he is profoundly unsettled by Paul Allen's card. In the book there are many more examples and his emotions run the gamut from anger to terror. So it would be in character for him to kill someone for thinking Huey Lewis and the News is only okay.
@@Monsposse Except he never actually killed anyone. It was all in his head.

Well the setting of the movie and book take place in the 1980s during the Wall Street boom. Movie takes place in 1988.
The writer of the book used to do music reviews, so it was his way of inserting those bits from his past work in there.
i like it better in the book, where the reviews are completely seperate from the killings.

White frat boys are so obsessed and envious of this character. Cringe-worthy indeed, when they are cowards at heart. Any fratboy trying to act like this guy should be labeled a LOSER. Most fratboys have the opposite psychological profile of this character.
You like Prince? His early work was a little too R&B for my taste, but when 1999 came out in '82, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a fusion of electronic funk-rock,and a strong theme of motivation, that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to both Michael Jackson and Madonna, but I think Prince had a more eclectic, ambitious, and whimsical sense and display of raw talent. In '84, Prince released this,Purple Rain, his definitive magnum opus album. I think one of his undisputed masterpieces is "Baby I'm a Star", a song so catchy and so joyous, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about self-empowerment and being rich on personality, it's also a clear statement of Prince being a truly confident and independent artist!
