The Tesla Model Y is the world’s best-selling electric vehicle and is on pace to become the best selling car period. This is my full review of our 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range after driving it over 5,000 miles.
The Tesla Model Y comes in 3 variants: Standard Range, Long Range, and Performance. We chose the Long Range Model Y because of what I call the 5 S’s: safety, software, space, Supercharging, and superior range. Ordering a Tesla is very simple. It’s all done on their website, and when you place your order you lock in the vehicle price. We ordered our Long Range Model Y in October 2021, and the total cost was $55,440 but after the latest price increase this model now costs $70,000 after taxes.
We chose white paint, black interior, and 19" gemini wheels. All Teslas come standard with Autopilot. The Model Y is essentially just a larger SUV version of the Model 3, sharing 75% of the same parts. But the Model Y has a hatchback instead of a trunk and is wider and longer with much more storage capacity, which is one of the biggest reasons we wanted a Model Y. The touch screen & software are the same, but the 2022 Model Y UI is extremely fast & snappy as a result of the new AMD Ryzen processor. Tesla's biggest software advantage Tesla, in my opinion, is their navigation maps & trip planner which automatically routes you to Superchargers along the way Voice commands have also gotten way better compared to when I first got my Model 3. Tesla vehicles are known to be the safest in their class, and the Model Y earned 5-star ratings and top safety picks in multiple countries.
The ride quality of this 2022 Model Y is much better than the original 1st-gen Model 3s and Model Ys. As a tall guy it's more comfortable on long drives compared to my Model 3. The double-paned windows result in a pretty quiet and soft ride. It takes curves really well for how big the vehicle is. The suspension & handling feel great, and it's all wheel drive so the 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds is quicker than 90% of the cars on the road that we encounter. Autopilot is the best driver assistance system available on any car in my opinion. It uses the car’s external cameras in conjunction with Tesla’s software to keep in its lane and maintain a set speed which is invaluable on long road trips.
The most important features of an electric vehicle are charging & range. This Long Range Model Y has 330 miles of estimated range. Our Model Y tends to get closer to 300 Wh/mile which means it uses slightly more energy than the EPA estimate. Possibly Tesla’s biggest advantage is its Supercharging network which includes over 35,000 fast-charging stations and is the largest global, fast charging network in the world. But 90% of the charging we do is at home, and this is the easiest & cheapest way to charge. We're happy with our Model Y. If you value safety, space, seamless charging & software then it’s probably worth the money. We love our Model Y & plan to keep it for a long time.

We are really super happy with our standard range model Y.
By far the best car we've ever owned.
The ride quality is outstanding on our standard 19-in wheels.
Much quieter even at highway speeds than our old ice car.
We only have to charge once a week to cover my wife's 5 X 35km commuting.
And that charging is done entirely from our rooftop solar panels - unless it's raining, and then we can charge it on 50% renewables grid content.

Best solution to the whine…? Tinnitus! I’ve had that for a long time. Like my poor sense of smell, I think it can be a blessing.
I love my 2021 Model 3 SR+. It had plenty of range for my 5,500 mile trip from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and was $10,000.00 cheaper than the LR when I got mine. I use that $10 grand to go on trips!
    Great video as always.

We also have the Model 3 and Model Y (both 2021's). My wife drives the M3 and for a person who doesn't care one wit about cars, she loves the M3. The Model Y is my daily driver and our Road Tripper. We have the trailer hitch option on the Y and use it for our ebikes. I have the Serial 1 Rush Cty S and saw Andy's excellent review after I bought mine. We use the ebikes often at home and, when we go to the CA coast.
Agree with all your positive comments and have no motor whine with either car. Really can't think of any complaints about either car. We got them in mid 2021 so the prices on the cars were excellent. I leased the MY and I will be getting a Cybertruck as my next and likely last vehicle purchase.

2021 Model Y here and we have been super happy with it. As mentioned, the cargo space in it just seems cavernous compared to other cars of a similar size. Also the front seats are awesome, no sore achy back or hips after a long road trip. Nitpicks- road noise at higher speeds, overall ride quality. Common complaints, but for the money worth mentioning. However these continue to improve in newer builds.

Nice video! I’ve just ordered some 2x1 inch AC insulating foam that I am going to try to stick into the area around the penthouse seal later today. Hopefully that helps. Although, Tesla doesn’t let you test drive before you accept delivery so it’d be hard to tell if your car does have the issue. Have you been able to drive any of the new model Y/3s with the updated suspension? My 2022 feels very similar to my 2021, so I’d be interested in seeing how much of a difference you’d notice

I picked up my 22 MYP in Feb and no motor sound issues. My seat makes a small click sound on curves and Tesla said its normal. 🤷‍♂️. I'll wait until it gets worst to take it in again. These cars are sooooo quiet tho, it's hard to complain about small noises. Wipers work great too. I do agree even the MYP feels a lot more comfortable than the early builds I test drove in 2020.

A great video and gives both the good and not so. I have a ‘22 Performance and love the car beyond anything I expected. I too have the phantom rain wipers while on AP. However, mine is only at night. Also I wished that Tesla would have a look down park assist like other equal or lesser value cars. I hope some of these issues will be taken care of by OTA updates. Thanks again for the great content.

Great video Andy. Very well thought out review. Enjoyed hearing what your wife thought. I have a model Y performance and recently purchased a 2023 nissan leaf s for my wife to drive then our kids when they turn 16. The only reason we purchased the leaf was price. We could not justify purchasing a $70,000 car as a 3rd one only for daily running around. Also getting the $7500 tax credit did not hurt. Next years income limits exclude us. :( While checking the cheep box and nifty EV ride the leaf is definitely not on par with a Tesla. Otherwise its pretty solid A to B car.
Anyways - your video skills really shine through in this one. Keep it up! and Congratulations.

I'm sorry you have had issues with a high pitch sound from the rear motor. We picked up our Model Y Performance in August and it didn't have that sound issue. It seems like they're a lot of people complaining in the June pickup time frame about this issue. I wonder if it was a bad batch of motors. It would be interesting to see if Tesla would give you a new motor again from a more recent batch to see if it would help.

Andy, Thanks for this nice review video. Very well done. One minor point: The EPA Wh/mi is the Wh delivered to the car, but the Wh/mi reported on Tesla’s screen is the Wh delivered from the battery, so it does not include energy lost in the on-vehicle charger, cables, and battery. Therefore the two Wh/mi numbers should not be compared directly, as was done in this video.

Bummer about that rear whine. I had something like that on a 05’ GTO at 40mph and they couldn’t do anything about it either. Over the year I’ve seen a few of the cosmetic things you pointed out in the vid. More after I did a ceramic coat and was looking closer but thankfully it was all easy to tweak. I do wish I could turn off lead acid monitoring in my 2021 since I tried a LifePO4 battery and thats a bust due to the current software and had to put the Lead Acid back in. That is a 31lb battery!

Continued from above... There are still a few things that were NOT INCLUDED that I think should have come on a car in this price range. 1. The frunk should close through software instead of manually. I struggle every time to find the right spot to get it to close properly. 2. There should be a foot gesture way to open the back hatch when approaching the car with your arms full..3. Yes, I wish there was less road noise. 4. An AC power outlet in both front and back.. 5. A LESS MINIMALIST APPROACH to the interior. The leather seats are luxurious and comfortable, but the dashboard is some anonymous wood, not a nice grain, and finish. Just look at a BmW OR Mercedes of the same price range and you will see the difference. 6. More voice commands. Often the software will tell me that the command was not understood.7. The option of a larger screen. I am sometimes unable to read the screen because I'm farsighted and need reader glasses which would hamper my vision while driving.. Tesla seems to be concentrating on trying to remove stalks but I like them becausei can use them without taking my eye off the road. I don't know how to give them feedback that will be not8ced. Oh and I forgot to mention a longer range,, mine is a LR model, but I live in NE Pennsylvania where the winters are cold and Superchargers are far apart. I am about 80 miles from a frequent destination, and I always need to charge the car before starting for home out of fear that the combination of the cold and a traffic jam could leave me stranded. All that said, I love my car and would make the decision to buy again in a heartbeat. The safety, the pep, the comfortable seats, the space, and not having to pump gas are winning features.

The whine is probably from the inverter and not the motor itself. Most power supplies (which an inverter is) have a switching transistor that turns on and off really fast to control the output voltage. The whine is probably around 12-20kHz, which is likely the frequency of that switching transistor. The only problem is that the human ear can hear frequencies in that 12-20khz range. Some designers take that sound into consideration and switch the transistor at a higher frequency that your ears cannot hear (22khz+), but this strategy may have some tradeoffs in efficiency, transistor lifetime and increasing the cost of the transistor. Big power transistors like the ones in the inverter that can switch at > 25khz+ can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars EACH and you need several of them to drive each motor.

      @phyzygy ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agree, Brian. I thought this as well. As one with a background in noise analysis (USArmy Research), another possibility is the albeit simple transmission gears. We found in helicopters the loudest, highest frequency, most damaging noise came from the transmission and not the rotors or jet turbine engine as one might expect. Nice Andy is still young enough to hear and be annoyed by such high freq! I used to be young once too. 😂

Thanks for sharing. I bought a new Tesla Y last year and I did enjoy it in many ways. They are beautiful sexy cars for sure.
However...i could not stand the glass roof. I think it is impractical for people who want to put things on the roof like a kayak.
I do not trust a Tesla roof rack to protect the glass, not worth the risk. Plus, florida sun shining on the roof make the car incredibly
HOT, yikes. Second, I have no garage for a charger, and the nearest charger is 30 miles roundtrip. Third, the charge at 80% was
just 270 miles; that gets used up fast. So, I sold it and am grateful I did. My new gasoline hybrid car gets 575 miles to a full tank,
and that makes things easier. I may get another electric car someday, when there is one without a glass roof, they get a solid 450
miles to an 80% charge, and, I have a garage with a charger in it. However, enjoy yours'.

If the LR Y is pushing your budget too much, get the SR.
