@@thebritstry I'll send it :) Thanksgiving is coming up and it would be such a fun video if you made a Thanksgiving meal. I also have a recipe or sweet potatoes with rum butter and roasted pecans.
The dried corn you were wondering about is known as Cope's Corn. The drying process preserves the sweetness and imparts a unique flavor, it's a favorite of mine so I'm happy to see you enjoy it.
Also, if you are still in the area September Farm in Honey Brook and Bird-in-Hand Bakery in Bird-in-Hand obviously. September Farm does nothing wrong, anything you get will be amazing. Dutch is really from the word "Deutsch". So glad you guys got to see Amish country. It is beautiful. The food looked amazing and you seemed to enjoy most of it. For the price and the fact that it is a buffet, it is a great deal and a great meal. The Mennonites and Amish are known for their plain, simple but hearty food and that looks like what you got. I am glad to see you had more of "home cooked" traditional cuisine that didn't seem to stray too much from your English food, as you made a number of comparisons.. I hope you got to shop at the store or somewhere local and picked up some more desserts to take home!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! Thank for the clarification and the food was really good! It is just second nature to compare the food to what we used to eat in the UK.
Oh yeah, if you do come to Philly, DO NOT go to Pat's or Geno's for cheesesteaks (they're tourist traps). Be sure to order your steak like WE do, cheesesteak with fried onions, mayo, catsup, salt & pepper. You'll thank me later. Try Delassandro's or Angelo's for steaks. Do check out the Reading Terminal for food galore. There's even Amish vendors there, along with various others. (Try the roast pork sandwich from Dinic's) Happy eating!!
LOVE SHADY MAPLE! I've been there twice and it is amazing!! Some of my favorites are their stewed tomatoes over mashed potatoes or over macaroni and cheese. Their stewed tomatoes are the best. LOVE Shoofly pie, one of my favorites if it's a wet bottom shoofly pie. It's one of those pies people either love or hate it.. I LOVE it! So much food to choose from and it's always a pleasant atmosphere. The store downstairs is amazing. You could spend hours in there! I love Lancaster!! Although I currently live in NJ I'm from Bucks County Pennsylvania and I LOVE Pennsylvania, wish I still lived there. We actually went to Mennonite Bible school when we were children and some of our teachers were Mennonite... Glad you enjoyed it, it is worth every penny to go there!
This Philadelphian has been to Shady Maple many times. A trip to the Dutch Country to shop the outlets, the best farmers markets or go to Sight and Sound would not be complete without a trip to this buffet. It is the best. You can eat yourself into a coma if you’re not careful.
Another traditional topping for potato pancakes is apple sauce. I read once "If you're a real buckaroo, have both sour cream and apple sauce."... I'm not sure what that means...
@@howardbeatman2820 That's a pro tip, because if you get the balance of sour cream and applesauce right, it tastes like you topped your pancake with a spiced apple cheesecake. Yahoo, buckaroo! 😋
So happy you both had the opportunity to enjoy Shady Maple. I was there many years ago, as we live in another state. My brother had his college graduation meal there and it was a fantastic eating experience.
The potato pancakes and corn cakes my grandmother used to make all the time they are best served with either applesauce or my favorite sour cream, and they’re not mashed potatoes they are finally grated potatoes with onion, flour, salt, and pepper, and an egg and then you fry them. It almost has the consistency of a pancake batter. for me, potato pancakes, are comfort food.
@ that’s different my grandmother well actually my grandfather was half Polish and that’s always the way they made potato pancakes graded with onion and my grandmother was from Poland so it was always like a pancake batter
Stuffing needs gravy. Brown gravy or maybe Red Eye Gravy. Same with Ham. Kudos on trying Liver. I like, with lots of onions, but draw the line at oysters...vile. Seriously hungry was the first man to eat an oyster. Crab cakes looked ok but needed cocktail sauce. Same with shrimp. Looks like they have a good pie maker. Yummm Back for seconds on pie.
@@adventuresinmusic2487 I swear, there had to have been some kind of practical joke involved when someone fed an unsuspecting friend oysters. The victim though it was wonderful and opened a restaurant and looked around in the garden for snails to serve as well. No wonder Lucy asked for ketchup! 😉
Just so you know, Shady Maple is neither Mennonite nor Amish food. It's Pennsylvania Dutch food. From what I've seen on youtube, most people say it's Amish. I think this is because it's in Lancaster. It's PA Dutch though. PA Dutch folks are primarily of German descent. Most of our food comes out of Germanic cooking. Amish is mostly Swiss-German and Dutch, and Mennonite is a mix of a lot of different authenticities, German, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, etc. The food is all similar, and in my opinion, it is just delicious! I so get you when it comes to liver and onions. It's one of those very deceptive dishes. It smells so delicious cooking, but it tastes like absolute poo when you eat it. LOL I don't like that liver taste either. I don't like any organ meats.
Wrong, see my response above. Pennsylvania Dutch refers the the Amish. The Shady Maple is probably not run by Amish because they don't use electricity.
@@timbuckman3870 I'm PA Dutch...LOL You are wrong. I also have Amish relatives. Also, there is "modern" sect of Amish that do allow for the use of electricity and they drive cars.
@@timbuckman3870that’s not entirely true they will use electricity computers cell phones etc for business purposes just not in their homes. Grew up in Lancaster county Pa around the Amish
One funny thing about the Amish for you is that they refer to *us* as "English"! They partially started as a rejection of modernity, as reflected by the industrialized English society of the time, so all outsiders are "English", as in, "they live an English way of life." The more you know!
This video would pop up in my feed at 11pm on a Saturday, and they’re closed Sunday! Can’t wait to make another family trip to shady maple! It’s the best, something for everyone, we love it there!
My rules are: No carbonated beverages because those bubbles take up valuable stomach room. Skip the salad, you can have salad at home, no bread… also takes up room in the tum tum. Their roast beef is amazing, I also recommend the pork & sour kraut over mashed potatoes, fried chicken, the corn pudding if they have it.
I recommend in future visits to buffets that you also get the accompanying gravy and sauces. You can still taste a little without it first, but generally if there’s an accompaniment like that, it’s meant to be poured on top or eaten alongside the food. That’s corn pudding you ate. The sausage is pronounced “kill-bah-saw”.
Decades ago, my family went to a steakhouse. The waiter offered the standard potato options of fries, baked, or mashed... then added that the restaurant made its own mashed potatoes and was proud of them. So I chose mashed potatoes. When our food arrived, the potatoes were slightly lumpy so I knew that they could not have come from a box.
You said it before I could.. and you are absolutely correct... I add a bit of cream cheese, evaporated milk and butter to mine, and only mix with a fork.. even in large quantities. My family would never forgive me if I didnt bring my taters to Thanksgiving.. xo
Never been to Shady Maple, but haved lived in Pa dutch co. all my life. The cuisine makes its way into most homes. Shoofly pie, chicken corn soup, ham and been soup, chicken and waffles, hog maw, bread puddding, ect, ect. Too many to name. Can't imagine not ever having eaten this way. Pick up a copy of "The Mennonite Cookbook", a staple in most local families. Amish and Mennonite stores are must try for some home grown and naturally raised products at a great price.

It is generally agreed that fish from the Codfish family taste ratings are: 1. Haddock, 2. Cod, 3. Pollock, 4. Hake 5. Whiting There are a few others like Saithe, and Ling, that I have never tried, and can't find any rating for them.
Hokey smoke! Didn't realize you folks lived in the US! This opens soooo much. Tour our Indian reservations and experience the culture and the food (fry bread is my favorite). @@llschnitz It's just the way we eat it in the South. It helps alot if the stuffing is dry. Of course if it is not dry, you can certainly eat it without gravy. If the gravy is prepared properly, it doesn't mask the flavor of the stuffing and adds a umami flavor to it.

I've eaten at what feels like a thousand restaurants, and I guess I am a bit underwhelmed at all but the most unique ones. I really prefer to cook and eat at home. Perhaps that's why my wife and I love watching you guys so much. Your openness and willingness to "give it a go" is admirable. And we just love how you seem to be in a different location for every video. And not just a across town, but often across the country from week to week. Now that is impressive.
Thanks' we think that both you and your channel are something special. ♥ Rich and Mila in Seattle. ♥
Wow! Thank you for the continued support! And your very kind words. We are having so much fun visiting all these amazing places! We are still hoping to get to Seattle in the future. Thanks for watching .
How are you two going to cope if you ever go back to the UK ? You may as well put down roots here in the USA with all of us !
Thanks for watching. We are loving visiting new places and trying new things. We live in San Diego at the moment
The price is unbelievable.
It’s so cheap for all those options , but try and go on your Birthday😉😉 thank you for taking to time to watch
Yep, and every night is a different meat theme like steak night and seafood night. Seafood night is $30 but the other nights are $25. I live maybe a half hour from there and eat at least 2-3 times a year at Shady Maples. It is very good.
Thanks!
WOW! Thank you so Much!!
Thanks guys! That look like such a great meal. Nicola, I noticed that you really liked the filling or stuffing. Would you like a really good recipe for cornbread stuffing that was my great-grandmother's? It's really delicious. The sweetcorn is made with Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix, creamed corn and kernel corn.
Yes please! I would love a recipe for cornbread stuffing!🤗
@@thebritstry I'll send it :) Thanksgiving is coming up and it would be such a fun video if you made a Thanksgiving meal. I also have a recipe or sweet potatoes with rum butter and roasted pecans.
True Southern dressing does not contain jiffy mix and is not sweet at all
If you are ever in Philadelphia definitely check out The Reading Terminal Market. The food and shops are unbelievable!
Stay tuned! We did manage to visit whilst we were in Philadelphia! 😀
Yes the Reading Terminal is the spot for food. 😊
@@thebritstry Yay! Looking forward to it!
Best Amish fried chicken there! I'm a fan of the sandwiches at D'Nic's there.. you can literally find nearly every type of food there.
The dried corn you were wondering about is known as Cope's Corn. It's a coal fire dried sweet corn that can be rehydrated and is pretty iconic in Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, common on the Thanksgiving table here in PA. The drying process preserves the sweetness and imparts a unique flavor, it's a favorite of mine so I'm happy to see you enjoy it.
Thanks for the info! It was so tasty.
Also, if you are still in the area September Farm in Honey Brook and Bird-in-Hand Bakery in Bird-in-Hand obviously. September Farm does nothing wrong, anything you get will be amazing. Bird-in-Hand Bakery is the same, but their molasses cookies are stellar. For the best ice cream you will ever have try Way Har Farm in Bernville. Cheers.
I have eaten there and what a stomach full of culinary experiences! I 🧡d everything I ate! 🤯
So good! We would love to have tried the breakfast selections! Thanks for sharing
(Try the roast pork sandwich from Dinic's)
Happy eating!!
I liked Jim's (?) in Paoli. Best cheesesteaks, and since I'm not from PA I didn't have to be a purist and ate cheesesteak with pizza sauce. 😊
Thanks for the tips! Watch this space! We have a video up tomorrow. 😉
My brother lives in philly and swears by tony lukes.
Amazing food! Thanks for trying it all for us to enjoy! Love you guys!
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Oh my goodness. I saw you coming out of the ladies room as i was going in and told you I Liked your hair. Great video!!
LOVE SHADY MAPLE! I've been there twice and it is amazing!! Some of my favorites are their stewed tomatoes over mashed potatoes or over macaroni and cheese. Their stewed tomatoes are the best. Their fried chicken is amazing, love their stuffing with gravy! Love their mashed potatoes with sauerkraut on top.. amazing!! The fried shrimp you had we usually eat with cocktail sauce..
Thanks for sharing. We love it a Shady maple ! The food was so good! And thanks for the tips
This Philadelphian has been to Shady Maple many times. A trip to the Dutch Country to shop the outlets, the best farmers markets or go to Sight and Sound would not be complete without a trip to this buffet. It is the best. You can eat yourself into a coma if you’re not careful.
Unfortunately, the outlets are not what they used to be. There's a lot of empty stores at Rockvale. Tanger is still going strong though.
You two are lovely together. Thank you for the laughs😊
We really appreciate your kind words! we are having fun visiting all these new places, let us know if there is anywhere else we should try?
you are both hilarious and I love your dynamic together. Great video!
You're suppose to put the delicious gravys on your meats and stuffing and sour cream on your potato pancakes 😊
Good tip! We will definitely spend more time trying the sauces next time.
Yes if the meats are dry. If cooked properly why would you want to cover up the meat’s delicious flavor with gravy?
Liver and onions are my favorite food. In fact, having that tonight. Grew up hunting, fishing. Good stuff. From southern Oregon.
I love it too! But we are going to struggle changing Andrew’s mind!
I love liver and onions, with bacon, and mashed potatoes.
Yum so do I! (This is Nicola 😀)
Love, love, love, your channel.
So happy you both had the opportunity to enjoy Shady Maple. I was there many years ago, as we live in another state. My brother had his college graduation meal there and it was a fantastic eating experience.
Thanks for sharing your memories, it sounds like a great experience!
So good! Thanks for the clarification
In our house mashed potatoes that were leftover from the day before were used to make potato cakes. No grated potatoes.
@ that’s different my grandmother well actually my grandfather was half Polish and that’s always the way they made potato pancakes graded with onion and my grandmother was from Poland so it was always like a pancake batter
I've heard of this place but have never been. It looks amazing. Just want to say the back and forth between you two is fun to watch.
It is definately worth a try! Thanks for watching!🤗
Nicola your smile is infectious! Much Love
Thank you for your wonderful words!!
You cannot go wrong with brisket and pecan pie.
So true! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the advice! Looks like next time we should investigate the sauces more. That pie was spectacular.
Good stuffing well seasoned absolutely does not need gravy.
Why TF does it matter? Our British friends are trying something new to them and I'm here for it.
Lies. Blah blah blah.
One funny thing about the Amish for you is that they refer to *us* as "English"! They partially started as a rejection of modernity, as reflected by the industrialized English society of the time, so all outsiders are "English", as in, "they live an English way of life." The more you know!
Wow! Thanks for the information! And thanks for watching
That is true. I am a Pennsylvanian.
This video would pop up in my feed at 11pm on a Saturday, and they’re closed Sunday! Can’t wait to make another family trip to shady maple! It’s the best, something for everyone, we love it there!
😂 why does that always happen when everywhere is closed! We would love to revisit too! Thanks for watching
That’s a great strategy! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tip! we appreciate the advice on how to fully enjoy the buffet experience. we'll definitely keep that in mind for our next visit!
@@thebritstry you’re welcome and without a dish may taste “flat” or lacking a bit in flavor. Love your channel and reactions! ❤️
You guys are so enjoyable! ❤ ya!
Thank you so much! 🤗
Loved the video my friends, the food looks delicious.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We appreciate your support and are thrilled that you loved the video!
lumpy mashed potatoes ARE FIRE. You know the potatoes are real. Add heavy cream and butter and you will eat them.
My family would never forgive me if I didnt bring my taters to Thanksgiving.. xo
We enjoyed both but the texture of smooth mashed potatoes is our preference! Thank you for sharing
I was just at Shady Maple Friday for my Dad’s 90th birthday and now I want to go back.
So do we!!! happy birthday to your Dad!
Serious creds for not spitting the liver out.

@@thebritstry Tomorrow's Sunday, I'll pray for ya'll about it!
Thanks for the suggestion! We'll have to add that cookbook to our reading list.
I live Shoo-fly pie❤️❤️
The corn could be scalloped corn casserole or a corn pudding.
Thank you for that information ! We really enjoyed it! Thank you for watching
there is dried corn and corn pudding

Wonderful reaction. Thank you. 💜
It is generally agreed that fish from the Codfish family taste ratings are: 1. Haddock, 2. Cod, 3. Pollock, 4. Hake 5. Whiting There are a few others like Saithe, and Ling, that I have never tried, and can't find any rating for them.
We’re always learning! Thanks for the tip!
Chicken and dumplings was invented in Pennsylvania 😊
We didn’t know that! It was really tasty.

stuffing is inside of the turkey while the other is outside the turkey
Makes sense! Thanks for the clarification
Hokey smoke! Didn't realize you folks lived in the US! This opens soooo much. Tour our Indian reservations and experience the culture and the food (fry bread is my favorite). Wisconsin is an amazing place for Italian and fish! Their southeast corner has a strong Italian connection and the north specializes in fish fries and boils. Michigan is close to my heart and offers the most beautiful creation the Detroit coney dog, polish perogies and Cornish pasties. Love you guys!
I've never heard stuffing (stuffed in the bird)/dressing (cooked in a casserole) called filling before.
filling is cooked outside the turkey and is still delicious
@@zipporahnorman9398 we never called it filling. What is it filling?
@@tony_25or6to4 Not sure why the other commenter said filling is cooked outside the turkey. That's dressing. Filling is cooked like stuffing and it's made just like stuffing except it also h as mashed potatoes mixed with the bread cubes.
@@catherinelw9365 just out a habit, we often call it stuffing at home. We don't stuff for food safety, time it takes, and we often bribe the turkey.
Phil here... filling is just a regional term that many (not all) PA Dutch use. I don't think it's used anywhere else, and more young people are saying stuffing.

Liver need to be freshly cooked. Chicken or beef. Old or over cooked it becomes bitter. It’s is an acquired taste.

Where is your ice to go with your birch beer?? 😊
Thanks for the suggestion! Andrew had some in his second round… he really liked it! Thanks for watching
The stuffing should be eaten with a coating of gravy. Some people like to put gravy on mashed potatoes.
If the stuffing is really good and properly seasoned why would you want to hide its flavor with gravy?
@@llschnitz It's just the way we eat it in the South. It helps alot if the stuffing is dry. Of course if it is not dry, you can certainly eat it without gravy. If the gravy is prepared properly, it doesn't mask the flavor of the stuffing and adds a umami flavor to it.
I miss three things from there and I didn't see yall try two of them lol their pickled eggs are the best I've ever had before, their custard was perfect on the sweet scale, and I loved their apple dumplings with ice cream. Their ham ball things where amazing also. Now I'm hungry.
