Testing Vintage Ho & N Locomotives from David

  • I was sent a whole bunch of vintage locomotives from David Z to G a few weeks ago and have been waiting to test them for a while. Some of these locomotives have likely not run in years so I wasn't sure what was going to start at what wouldn't. As it turned out, quite a few wound up springing to live when I gave them power. These are all great locomotives and I want to thank David from Z to G scale for them as well as David from DBtech for contributing to the Hershey's locomotive.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Dave of DBTech as well, Harrison. I know you mentioned him in the unboxing: we went 50/50 on the Hershey Locomotive when we met up for the Allentown Spring Thaw Train Meet. Nice, they all run pretty well except for the N Santa Fe switcher, but I'm sure it'll be up and running in the future. I thought it was unique. That one I picked up at the show in Colorado. The CN switcher, well folks, it's CN, 'nuff said.
    Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍

I always had a thing for the rigid framed industrial locomotives. So many of them were re-issued, even re-motored later in their runs. I know they were HO, but it made me think that stood for "horribly oversize." At one point I had the same basic loco (some were center cab) from Marx, Lionel, Gilbert, AHM, IHC, Bachmann, Model Power, Life-Like, Tyco, Cox, ROCO, Mehano... None of them ran well, or at scale speeds, but still interesting. I always thought it would be fun to re-motor and re-gear them. I still remember the challenge of installing reversing lights in an Athearn Hustler, which came with no lighting.

If you're referring to the one in the video, that's an FP45. Athearn also produced an FP45 but I believe only offered it in the dark blue freight scheme. The FP45's were only ever operated by the Santa Fe and the Milwaukee Road. The SD45 was operated by numerous companies but I don't believe B&O ever had any of them either.

You will get people that will are you all day that they’re really big time difference but according to EMD electric motive division The E-8/E-9 are only 200 hp apart ! They both had the same body and chassis the only difference again, the E-9 was turbo charged ! No the difference between the one the E to theE3E4E56 compared to the E89 is humongous because the earlier E units E3 six had a very slant nose as opposed to the bulldog nose of the E-8 & E-9 ! 🌊🐺
