Running All of My AHM/Rivarossi C-Liner Locomotives

- Throughout the years I have picked up a variety of HO C-Liner style locomotives in many different paint schemes. Almost all of them are made by AHM however the two Wabash units are made by Rivarossi and were projects which took a while to get running. They all run although some better then others depending on their condition, maybe it's time to service a few? In any case it was nice getting them all out on the mainline today.

Super. It never crossed my mind as a kid to buy a C-Liner, but I have always wished for an HO version of the N scale Atlas classic B-C trucked FM CPA24-5. The Fairbanks-Morse Consolidation line consisted of CPA16-4, CPA16-5, CPA20-5, CPA24-5, CFA16-4, and CFA20-4 models, all cab units, in both A (Cab) and B (Cabless) unit designs. P=passenger, F = freight, # = HP, "dash" = number of axles. They also used three cooling fans initially on the lower horsepower models, four on the higher power machines, and all had four traction motors with some having a fifth "idler" axle to support the weight. So if the AHM models have four cooling fans and four axles, it is probably an early FM CFA2O-4. Don't quote me though, as AHM could have assumed that all C- Liners had the same number of cooling fans, and these could even be passenger, not freight units. Hello Harrison, If you look closely at the Wabash there may be an encircled L, In 1957 Lionel started HO and Rivearossi suppled Lionel with HO including C liners in about 6 road names with small Lionel L Nice to these engines still running Thanks
You need to do like “UP switching operations on the layout” and stuff like that
The c-liner it’s really interesting yet obscure
Baldwin made some very unique locos if you want to see one of the first very cool ones, search the 8000 series, they were the first diesel in Canada

Those Wabash C-Liners are really nice. And they're both Lionel Rivarossi! I was able to spot the little Lionel logo on the side... also the design of the front apron was unique for the 1957 Lionel HO line that Rivarossi made. Rivarossi only supplied Lionel with trains in 1957 (though some inventory remained to be sold for 1958) so they're reasonably rare. It's too bad that one unit wasn't working out for you but I'm glad it can still work as a dummy and allow them to work as a team.

Looking this up (isn't the internet marvelous?), I see that the two main manufacturers of Fairbanks-Morse "C-Liner" locos were AHM, Rivarossi, Tyco and Life-Like's Proto 1000. So - which do you have?
And sadly, the "C-Liners" were not all that popular with the railroads. Not to many of them ordered and/or used them. If you want to check this out, see here:

Oh...and that odd N scale unit you have with the front two axle truck and the three axle rear truck? Yep...Fairbanks-Morse built their passenger "C-liners" with that extra non-powered axle to carry the weight of the steam generator units needed for the passenger trains. Like I said - the internet is a marvelous thing!

@@BlaxlandRidge3 Yeah, they are all AHM except for the Wabash AA set. I believe AHM used the same shells as Rivarossi did, just a different drive system.

Through the years people have given me their old trains and usually it’s inexpensive stuff that doesn’t run well. One time I was given a AHM C-Liner in the Atlantic & East Carolina paint scheme. I didn’t have high hopes for it, but it runs great! I put kadee couplers on it. All my AHM engines from the past 50 years still run!
AHM didn't make the most fancy stuff out there but they are simple and reliable locomotives.

Ahh, the good old FM C-Liners. I love FM's designs and I think they should've survived a lot longer.

Just got a couple Santa Fe’s from a lot surprisingly they work after a little work. They are actually good runners

I used to have a Santa fe AHM c liner it was a good runner motor burned out or something happened i cant remember. It was years ago. I think a pin went missing. Awesome to see them running . woah you got some studio Lighting going on . Nice!

Nice run of the C-Liner collection, Harrison. I'd have to say the top three paint schemes in the lot: Chesapeake & Ohio, Southern, then Union Pacific in that order, but that's just my opinion.

Fascinating. I too have a Rivarossi C-liner that I got from a friend and it sounds pretty noisy when it runs. However, it runs little faster than the one in the video and I have not checked how much current it draws as I don't have a meter on any of my power packs.
Peco Electriclube will works wonders on the Santa Fe .

I had one of those FM units and cut off that wonky pilot and bought a F unit pilot part and fit it to the c liner. Looked a lot better, sorry no pictures as I no longer have it.

I think I figured out why your C-liners came with a Riverossi motor !?! If memory serves me correctly,; That “brass bar” that I saw “between the two trucks” when you “turned it upside down”, it’s a sure sign that it’s a Märklín HO/OO locomotive ! You see just like Lionel has three rails, Märklín does the same thing for Their HO/OO !!! At Least that’s the only explanation I can come up with because, I’ve seen their locomotives and held them in my hands and felt the third rail which tends to be just a piece of T-brass sticking out barely noticeable but you pass your finger down the center of the rail, I guarantee you’ll feel it !!! So what probably happened is that they probably couldn’t get the correct motor replacement where they were at and the closest they could get was a Rivirossi motor so they had to convert it and convert over to two-rail too !!! 🌊🐺

You should get a Proto 1000 C Liner. They are beasts on the track.
I'm a big fan of Proto, I'm sure their C-liners are sound runners.

The southern logo looks different than the go transit logo
i just got a AHM NP FP45 and its really silent but it has some thing wrong with it but im gonna clean the wheels first

I don't think it matters too much but nickel silver does the best job at not oxidizing too quickly. Be careful doing that, it's not something I recommend.

This might be a long shot, but I have an AHM Plymouth switcher with this style of motor. Would anyone know where to get brushes for them outside of getting another used motor. I understand that all the manufacturers who would have used them are all out of business, but I thought it was worth asking around
Likely not too many out there side from getting another motor. Finding a junked engine to steal parts from wouldn't be too tricky though.
