I’m a newer off road rider. Older 59 but still in the game. Got a 2021 drz 400. Frustrated with lack of riding area. I want to push to make improvements. If I can learn this move that would greatly benefit my overall skills. Don’t need a big area for this. This is my next move to conquer. I love these videos. It’s like hiring a coach. On paper it looks so good, but I am afraid on a rocky, unstable ground with a fully loaded GS, my elephant turn would become a bike 20 feet away in a ditch and me just scratching my head figuring how much that just cost me in replacement parts.
For me, I have a 100 kg street bike that Ive repurposed for offroading so I can learn the basics on a less expensive, light bike before I move to an actual dual sport. Planning to get one this October.

Good and very informative... Maybe to also advise for starter ..do it with a friend and beach with sand for a beginner ... the GS seems to be less heavier versus a GSA with all 3 boxes that could add weight and increase counter balance when needed....so start with a less weight for beginners too
Very good instruction. I've wanted to learn to do this turn. You break it down into steps that gives me more confidence to try it. My Africa Twin Adventure Sports is DCT, so I'm a little more worried about losing control but I'll just work up to it slowly, in small steps. I do not have any experience with clutch-less motorcycles, but your idea of using the parking brake sounds correct. Having a finger or two covering that left lever will allow you to grab it quickly if you need to.
Once you get a feel for leaning the bike and breaking rear tire traction a few times (in a controlled manner) your confidence in understanding how the bike responds will help with making the next step easier.

Many times, I have found myself in that situation. 😅 I would say, it’s important to be comfortable dismounting the bike from either side and then being able to walk around the bike supporting it with both hands so that you can be in a better situation to then try and walk the bike out. This could involve backing the bike straight out until a wider spot for U turn or using the friction zone to rock the bike up and down a slight edge to get momentum to be able to turn bike around. What do you think: is it a fatal mistake to use a little bit front brake while turning the elephant? Sometimes it seems more easier to slide the rear wheel with covered front brake. Someone says it could be dangerous in mountains or unstable coverage (dust, sand, gravel). What is your opinion?
I personally do not use the front brake on an elephant turn. With enough practice in the fundamentals, demonstrated throughout the elephant turn videos series, a rider can develop the proficiency and speed needed to complete it without the front brake. Now… hooliganism and doing donuts is where you want to use the front brake 😉

Yes, you can do an elephant turn on asphalt. Having a street tire vs knobby off-road tire helps. A 390 has plenty of power to do this. Certainly, anytime you feather the clutch with high engine RPMs it will wear the clutch. But, with the correct technique (after lots of practice… which could wear the clutch if you over do it) the clutch will not be affected because it happens so quickly.
ABS and Traction Control are both known as "rider aids". In the case of elephant turn, the most important aid to disengage is the traction control so there is full ability to spin rear tire. ABS is not a critical factor for this.

Yes, you need enough throttle to break traction. It is a high-rev maneuver and as far as "same throttle" - it depends on how much grip the surface you are spinning on and how many 360s you want to do.@@coolfriend693

Is it possible to do this on asphalt? or it there just too much traction?
Yes, you can do an elephant turn on asphalt. Having a street tire vs knobby off-road tire helps. We have done several “Elephant Turn” videos, and in this one, I demonstrate on different surfaces:

Can I burn the clutch trying to practise this? Will a 390cc gave enough to turn the bike like this?
A 390 has plenty of power to do this. Certainly, anytime you feather the clutch with high engine RPMs it will wear the clutch. But, with the correct technique (after lots of practice… which could wear the clutch if you over do it) the clutch will not be affected because it happens so quickly.

The only time I use the brake is to squeeze the front brake to make the bike stop. 👍🏻
Can you make an elephant turn on abs enabled bikes?
ABS and Traction Control are both known as "rider aids". In the case of elephant turn, the most important aid to disengage is the traction control so there is full ability to spin rear tire. ABS is not a critical factor for this.

Yes, you need enough throttle to break traction. It is a high-rev maneuver and as far as "same throttle" - it depends on how much grip the surface you are spinning on and how many 360s you want to do.@@coolfriend693
