I know how it feels. I’ve dealt with meltdowns, sensory overload, shut downs as well as burn out. I am an adult on the autism spectrum officially diagnosed as a child.

Wow im the same way! When I was a kid, my mom used to tell me that I'd shut down. Now, I blow up more than just shutting down. For me, its definitely levels. Sometimes I'm full blown screaming, and sometimes (usually daily) i get so overwhelmed I become non-verbal and breathe heavily.
Thank you SO much for this video. Honestly this is the first once I've seen that I could relate to because of how much detail you go into.

Watching your video again - You do have a gift of expression.... I hope you do more videos in the future - When you said being overwhelmed manifests as anger, could you also say that this state of being overwhelmed starts to become the involuntary fight/flight/freeze response and the anger is the unrealized energy of fight or flight?

Yeah I would say that. Other kinds of overwhelm lead to shutdown for me, which is "freeze."

I'm about about 2 weeks shy of my ASD Dx. Being late diagnosed adds another dimension to all this. For me, it is completely changing my level of self-awareness and as that happens my autistic traits are increasing in type, frequency and degree. My alexithymia makes feelings and their meaning an unreliable source of information to understand or prevent reaching my stress limits. Melt downs about instinctual neurological reactions to stress much like other people go into shock from trauma, or have PTSD triggered reactions. Your rational mind takes a seat while the subconscious tries to stay alive.

I'm not sure if your comment ended abruptly or if I just can't see all of it, but yeah. When I first self-diagnosed, I had been having full-on shut downs once a month like clockwork for a while without knowing what they were. Once I got some insight and self-care tips from my Autistic Elders in online communities, I stopped having them... For a whole decade I didn't have any. But with a 2 year old... I have to consider a whole new dimension of autistic self-care, and re-learn where my limits are.

@@lizokitten2 Hello! Under the last part of the text of my reply is a button to press "read more" that will open up the rest of my text. We are all so very different and look to each other's experiences to try and better understand our selves.

You are describing me exactly. I am at least glad I knew from a young age that I could not have children. I wish you the peace you need.
