- In this week's video I share with you my top ten list on how to have better results when you enter art shows. Why are they so hard to get into, or if'n you do get in, why are you not winning? I'll share with you my experience and thoughts from many years of entering (and being accepted) into art shows across the country, as well as my experiences of being a judge for art shows.

I notice that paintings with neutral colors always get chosen. For example, a portrait with basic, real life colors. I would rather use neutral and colorful colors to show more emotion and create an overall aura over the painting. That's more my style but I'm scared to do that because it seems like those ones never get chosen.
If you paint for you, your audience will find you. Oil Painters of America or the ARC (Art Renewal Center) Salon shows may be a good fit for you then. Good luck!!

Just the sort of fine art wisdom and experience I had hoped to see from you. Fine art approaches are pretty new to me having spent my career solely in commercial art. These tips make so much sense. Awesome to hear the point of view of an actual judge. And... it would have been worth the viewing regardless, just to watch you doodle. Fun!
Aww, thanks Steve! Have you started entering some shows, I hope? I have no doubt you would do great! Yep, this was a fun video to do, no doubt. I just couldn't imagine sitting and talking into the camera and have anyone still watching at the end. ;)

Finishing a digital piece for a contest right now.. Feeling super nervous about it.. I was never competitive, but decided to enter because it’s for a community I’ve resonated with this past year. And, to add to it… The subject is something I’d say is deeply personal to me. One of my friends won 3rd last year, so that kind of gave me a push to try. I have no clue what to do for the background.. My composition is interesting enough, but I want to add a 3rd main element to make a triangle, if that makes sense. This video helped me decide on it and ease up a little, the 2nd tip is definitely most important to me! I have a tendency to overly punish myself when I lose in contests… And hearing your words helped me come to realise how minuscule losing a contest actually is and how it just serves as a stepping stone to becoming better. Thanks for this video, my dude.. Means a lot to me :)
My teacher encouraged me to join an art competition , my style is mostly stylized but I’ve noticed the judges mostly prefer realism and landscape :/ I don’t expect to go far but it’s a nice experience
Hi Mamasita, honestly, there are all kinds of judges out there and they all have different tastes. So, if you don't do well with one competition, keep entering different ones... you'll find one that has a judge that LOVES your style. Like I've said, I've entered competitions and won a medal for painting, and entered that same painting in another competition and it wasn't even juried into the show! You can do it!!
Thanks Mr Atkins Not many judges share their private criteria in an effort to keep their privileged rank. You are honest and well intentioned to help in a pleasant and even well illustrated manner ,with your skillful sketches.
You know, the way I see it.... van Gogh in all his life time only sold one piece and was to cover a debt.... Today you will pay millions for any van Gogh original.... In the other hand Monet was famous in his life time... So, it's a matter of life - ups and down!!!! Art is an expression of the soul, and there is no bad art.... only people who likes or not what they see; "beauty is on the eye of the beholder". I do art for me and to express the Creator's giving gift of my Soul, and I really don't care if someone else like it or not... I have just express what my Soul wants.

Are there any specific online competitions you'd reccomend? You mentioned you used to judge for them, and with the pandemic its impossible to find any in my area :(
This is so true, I have sold paintings that were not my favorite and not sold my most favorite.
I have also won a painting contest back in 2015, mine really stood out, that is a must, definitely, I'm participating in another one this month which is why I came here.

I was having a drawing competition at 28 November and I watched this video on 27 November and today the results came and I got 2nd position
I’m entering one right now with about 1000-2000 people
I won it last year with 1500 so I hope I can win again
What a great video! Thanks so much. I recently entered, for the first time to an amateur competition in the town I live in. I entered four paintings. Three oil paintings and one in pastels. To my surprise, I got three blue ribbons and one green. The blue ribbons means I’m qualified to to enter a competition at state level in the fall. I was shocked and happy. The judge gave us all her thoughts about each piece and I was happy about it! I’m a self taught artist and fear to expose myself was my first no-no to enter competitions until i decided to do it this time. I truly appreciate your video! Very encouraging and helpful. I will watch it again and again to make sure I do understand your tips. You are amazing and I love your videos. Best wishes and many blessings.
Way to go Crisalida! That's awesome. Good for you for having the determination and courage to put yourself out there to be willing to be judged. It's funny how when the judge chooses one of our pieces for an award or even inclusion in a show, they are intelligent and wise. But when we're overlooked or rejected, their intelligence points drop severely, lol! Glad you found the video helpful, thanks for watching!!

I'm so so sorry Brian! When I get triggered, like you were, I find that sitting in a small dark closet for an extended period helps... preferably while holding your pet tapir.
Im kind of nervous but since sooo many peaple like my art i decided to ask my dad if i can do it, and he said yes! I did a change in my style a tiny bit and i hope it makes it better
I've won several national art competition ,,,I didn't put any standard when it comes in creating an artworks...I just need to be satisfied to my work ,,I don't care about how the others view it in their own observation it's either good or bad to them,,I didn't mind their opinions,,I am most care about mine..and that I therefore conclude to my self,,that for you to win the art competition,,,you just need to be true to your self, and so as well to your masterpiece....

I join 8 art contest in a span of 5 months then all 7 are lose. And my 8th art contest announcing of winners is on june 30 2020 hahaha.

I have an art competition that ends After 3 days, the prize is something that i really really want but i have my hopes really down because the other peoples have really good artstyle..😭 Theres more than 100 people and i feel like mine is the worst
Hey txt, I have a feeling you're better than you give yourself credit for. The best artists are always their own harshest critics (it's why they're so good). Even if this one doesn't work out like you want it to, keep working. Use it as your gasoline on your artistic fire, and you'll bet better... next time, who knows? All my best, Steve

thnx there's an art contest I'm performing in tom and I've only been using watercolors since awhile ago lmaO but we need them for it... I'm really paranoid n stuff and ik i probably won't win anything but yanno what? I'm just gunna have fun with it

My dad is in the military we live on base the base does an art contest for preteens, teens, and adults I’m entering one soon and I’m really nervous!
No worries Emily, you've got this! And, like I say, remember that this is only the start for you. Even if you happen for some crazy reason to not get in, or not win anything, there is always next time. Every judge is different and I've had paintings that have won medals in one show, not even get in another show... go figure. It doesn't mean anything, especially if you know in your heart it's good!!! Paint on.

1:42 umm... The dies are wrong, the first one has 1 and 6 on the adjacent faces and the second one has 5 and 2 on the adjacent faces, both of which are not standard

Enter anyways. Your art teacher will soon be a distant memory, but your drawing style is a part of you. It's who you are artistically right now. Your style may change down the road, evolve, but your style should never be dictated by someone else's taste.

Draw Paint Repeat . Yup well the horse shows are far behind me. I do hope to enter an art show..( is that the correct name?) In the future. Just getting my feet wet again in the 'painting with goals in mind ' . Got a ways to go. I am amazed at what you can do. Trying out watercolor this last year with Steve Mitchell and many others to guide me. Trying an oil here this week, that is my first medium. But heck even with years of painting behind me I feel like rookie. You have a great channel here. Helps answer some questions I forgot to ask.

Are all are competitions requiring framed pieces? I know a painting looks almost twice as good with the proper frame.
Not all competitions require frames, or even having to send your painting to them, there are online competitions such as the FASO Bold Brush competition. But, for the most part, if it's a physical show, you will need to have it framed and have hanging hardware attached to the back so that it's ready to hang. Good luck!
