I agree that when it comes to projects for my house, the decisions seem so varied and a little overwhelming . Beautiful place to relax and watch the stars!
@@JohnBuildsIt me too. I can design and build a printer stand for my partner who really doesn’t need it but I can’t design and build a cabinet for my smoker whose stand I desperately need to replace.
Great video showing every step in good detail. Your project showed many conditions that another homeowner could encounter, which will be helpful. You and your family can be proud of your success on your deck!
You're one of the only TH-camrs nowadays that I actually get excited to watch new videos of. Great work! Would pay for some consulting on projects as you're a wealth of knowledge and ingenuity.
This just looks great. The transformation is amazing and I love that you color matched and the paint for the flower boxes. I can't say I'd change a thing. The lighting is a really nice touch too. Popping that spline board in must have been super satisfying. Thanks for your advice on the PVC vs composite and temp. That's a huge advantage.
Great job! Can really tell how poorly the other deck was built compared to the one you built. It really adds value to the house and I love the built in planter boxes.
Apreciate all of your good wookmanship; you covered a lot of tasks. I think understanding presevative treated wood is important so that the type and amount of treatment is right for the application.
Your deck looks fantastic! I did the same thing to my deck eight years ago. I used the Trex deck system on my deck. This included the post sleeves, railing, and down lighting on the posts. The only things that needed painting were the support beam, 6x6 posts and the stringers for the stairs. I used the hidden fasteners for the boards and the Cortex screws with the plugs for the step risers and trim boards. The deck still looks great today. Yours should last for many years virtually maintenance free. Enjoy!
It wasn’t my first choice either but I wish I remembered the numbers, it’s pretty crazy how much cooler this deck stays compared to everything else I tested
So professionally done, I can see you're a perfectionist. One thing you didn't tell us is how long does it take for you to plan it all out before and during construction. Great work, very satisfying to watch.
I loved your video and the masterful way you executed your deck rebuild. Great job! I have 1,400 sq. foot of PT pine in the DC area that I've kept treated over the years (since 1988) and it's still going strong. Strong believer in the Behr products and Sherwin Williams is my go to paint for all things painted. Loved the tools too! Thanks.
Wow what an fantastic deck transformation. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is incredible. I learned a lot of little tips that will be helpful one day when I have to rebuild my current deck.
Fantastic job. Looks beautiful. I have the same situation. Redoing my deck. Built it 26 years ago. Pushing 80 now and can't do it anymore. Want to hire someone to do mine exactly the way you did. Same materials. Hope I can find someone. Will continue to follow to see what else you do. Great work.
Watched this because I'm educating myself on resurfacing our deck. The way I see our deck, the bones are solid. We need the surface boards replaced and possibly the railing over time. This is all new to me. The spline board does not exist on our current deck, but I like the look of what you did. When factoring in waste of the boards, I wonder how the best way to pick the 2*6 is. I have just about 24' width on 16" joist spacing. Makes the most sense to butt two 12 footers up against each other and leave 5.5" for a spline? I was going to buy 16 footers and go from there. Regardless of whether or not you respond, very impressive video on all accounts. Well done, sir!
Looks great and is well put together. I haven't see any composite decks that have no maintenance though. Cleaning those white railings is a pain and the decking texture wears out quickly and the boards need replacing. Unless you have lived with a deck like this for a while, these are things that sales guys don't tell you.
This is a pvc product with a 50 year warranty, not even a comparison to older composites you have experience with man! Less maintenance as in no sanding, painting, staining, patching. Of course it’ll still need it’s yearly cleaning 👍🏽
I've got a really crazy deck that would make a great make over video for you. No two joists are the same distance apart from the others. And yet at some point there was a hot tub on the top of it. I'm not sure how it hasn't collapsed years ago.
Beautiful deck and very well explained. The stairs are definitely my favorite part. If don’t mind me asking, how many days in total to complete the deck?
Great job! One thing I wonder is how the material works regarding thermal expansion / contraction. In particular whem you put in that center deck board, you said it was a snug fit...
Insanely beautiful...deck goals for sure lol... looks expensive too 😭 Missing the firepit and outdoor entertainment lounge area now lol... Always something to do 😉 Love the color combo 👌🏻
Great job! I have a couple of questions. 1. during the demo, removing the old screws with a crowbar wont damage the frame/joist? 2. do the old screw holes need to be filled as well? or is the joist tape sufficient? 3. what about using a camo system for securing the deck boards instead?
Just depends on the condition of the screws. A lot of time they’ll just break off, or if they’re not too bad it’s probably better to just unscrew them. Then yea just the tape will seal all the holes. At the time I did this, timbertech didn’t recommend the camo system with this decking for warranty. But now of course they do have own similar system haha. It’s a good method
@@JohnBuildsIt Thanks John! I honestly didn't expect a response back. I have a ~550sq.ft. deck that is failing and I want to take this on myself. I'm mechanically inclined but I haven't done anything like this ever. Good news is that it is a straightforward deck, just one surface. You'd think it would be easy to tackle but I'm nauseous thinking about starting it and not getting the time to finish it off or getting stuck somewhere and not have a way out of it. deck builders in my area are telling me wildly different quotes and I'm hoping to save the labor costs and apply it towards excellent quality materials (like ironwood or tigerwood deck boards) which will come with its own set of challenges. Thank you for sharing your videos though. I really appreciate all that you do!
I was surprised to see the corner miters being glued together. I've been told to leave those miters gapped to allow for expansion and contraction with the temperature change.
My dad was a master carpenter he would have been proud to work with you.
Thank you!!
I’ve been a high level carpenter for over 30 years and I love to see excellent high quality work performed!!! Great job!!
I appreciate it man!
👍👍👍👍
One of the best deck transformations I’ve seen. Highly satisfying.

That G-tape detail is a huge one that most people skip. Great Content!
Definitely worth the little extra cost!

Wow! What a transformation. You do real nice work.
Thank uou!
Well Done! Love the color and the wide stairwell with the railing on one side. What a difference!
Thanks man! Loving it!

That is an amazing looking deck John. The colors are great and the lights just set it all off and give a nice lighted pathway
Thank you! 🙌🏼
Great job. The deck looks fantastic

Looks great. Can you please provide a picture (or explain) how you mounted the post lights at a 90 degree corner? Thanks!
I cut a couple small angled pieces out of some pvc trim board to mount behind the light in that corner

Thank you! I really don’t remember at this point though sorry!

Big difference between pvc decking vs composite. Still nice and tight miters with the pvc 👍🏽
Beautiful!!
