I (27F) have an older sister named Sheila who I absolutely despise. She is the reason why I am even on Reddit today to ask if what I have decided is right or wrong.
You see, Sheila is the eldest in my family. She was not a planned baby and our parents had her when they were still in college. As a result, she had to spend the first two years more around our grandparents who were helping our parents take care of her. Our parents did visit her as much as they could while still working hard to graduate. When they finally graduated, our parents decided to get married to each other and this is when Sheila started to live with them.

I think she did the right thing to keep her mouth shut. Her sister is unhinged and could possibly physically hurt her to the point of her being unalived in a fit of rage or verbally bullying her. Words hurt worse because you remember them and hear them in your head like a broken record.
Glad OP dad held the older child accountable or she’d be even more horrible.

NTA. Your only response should be a public "Dear sis, as a Berkeley graduate, you should remember how intense and stressful the last year of college can be and how much work it takes to do well. Thank you for trusting me to want me to organize your wedding and thank you for understanding why I simply can't!' Good for you for telling him the truth (can you imagine what hell he'd go through marrying her and having her lord it over him, a 'mere high school graduate?') No more truth to tell anyone. You helped him dodge a big bullet. And sorry it took so long for you to realize how many toxic people there are, and to feel that you are not alone and fell validated!

This is the mom's fault. All of it. She coddled the witch, she would excuse all of the horrible things her oldest did. She was the one who allowed all the bullying and harassment to continue for so long.
    ETA:
Sheila had the gall to ask the sister to plan the wedding/reception? If I were OP, I would have had the crap she pulled lined up to serve to her guests.
Also, OP should have reported to the sister's company about the forging of her degree and that they needed to do a better check.
At least people at work found out at that party.

My brother had to live with our grandparents for the first few years of his live. When my parents married he was so excited to have a Dad. Then I was born and naturally my parents had to now divide their attention. I could understand if my brother were jealous of me. But he never was violent towards me, not even when he was a wild teenager. Of course we would argue with each other but nothing more than the usual sibling differences.
OP‘s parents should have never let this going on so long. It’s got to be awful to be bullied in your own home.

    @momoangel9243 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Honestly i would say the parents are at fault and should have gotten Sheila help when she was younger,
However from what i heard, i have a suspicions that if op's dad would even suggest some form of therapy op's mom wouldn't have allowed it and possibly even ague over it, especially with her behavior during the ball incident,
Seriously I'm glad op told jack the truth, and he & any future children they might have had won't be stuck with Sheila at all,
Sheila attack op emotional and especially physical to the point of actually hurting op causing her to bleed, kids or not that was/is not acceptable at all,
Which was bad enough she then drunk driver when she was older, which luckily nobody got hurt or worse,
and yet still she behave horrible to op, forged documents, possibly got a job that could have went to someone else with said forged documents,
and most of all she lied to jack for long time and was planning to marry him while still lying to him,
So on one hand op shouldn't have let Sheila back into her life especially when she was still horrible, but on the other op saved jack from a terrible person like Sheila, which is definitely a win for jack.

The mother failed spectacularly. Should've realize gentle parenting won't work for every kids out there. If you have erratic, stubborn with violent streaks type of kid, soft parenting is just an enabler method. And if you truly love your kid, they need to be able to discern right and wrong, you haven't got forever and ever to stay beside and correct them. They gotta find their place in society as an adult, and society won't be as forgiving to misbehaving adults. Tough love is a necessity.

What the heck is this reddit story? The more I listen, it got me thinking that everyone in this reddit story is an AH. Shelia should've gone to therapy a long time ago as she could been going through something that isn't jealously. The mother shouldn't coddle Shelia just because she is the oldest. This is why I think gentle parenting is a crock of ish. because most parents who use gentle parenting do not use it properly and they allow their children to become evil little arseholes. and they allow their children to walk all over them and their siblings and they allow their children to become disrespectful to everyone around them if they use it properly their children would turn out to be decent human beings because even in gentle parenting you still discipline it's just not corporal punishment. something else I despise is when there is one parent who always goes behind the other parents back and undoes any discipline that that parent does, that's the kind of parent that is the biggest failure.

Wow! It's amazing how american can't do hard parenting. Don't solve their problem but give them advice and let them solve their own obstacles. Don't protect them from anyharm, but educate them about every harm that will came their way at their age, over come any obstacle your kids have together and grow together. And start from as young as elementary age, so your kids won't get their lesson from life itself and be humbled by them.

OP, you are not the AH to refuse to do a job you never wanted to do for a person who has done nothing but bully you and blame you for her shortcomings your whole life. Being her wedding planner means that she will point at you and blame you for anything that goes wrong. Nope out of that shit because she hates you and you know it. So do your parents so they are sort of AHs by expecting you to interact with her. And OP, she doesn't love you or respect you or she would find a place for you within her wedding party instead of asking you to do grunt work she would have to pay people good money to do. Your sister is nothing but trouble.
As far as all of the lies she told to her BF, you know of course that somehow, somewhere she is going to get found out. I would advise you not to be the one who tell him unless you can be sure of doing it without being found out by him or anyone else. Hell, even if he found out because she was talking in her sleep, or because the company they work for contacted Berkley to check something and found out she never attended, she will blame that on you too. Your sister is dangerous and the idea of her physically hurting you as a child proves it. You dad isn't terrible, but your mother is because you sister was dangerous as a child, but they never took action to get her help or protect you. And I doubt that your sister has gotten less danerous with time. You are far past the point of going NO CONTACT with your sister, and your parents can either except that your life has no room for your sister and her craziness or they will be cut out too.
Please, please, please OP see your sister for the danger she is to you and your life. Never, ever let her know your home address. Never ever let her know where you work or meet your significant other or introduce your kids to her. She is psycho level crazy and you are a fool for trying to stay in touch with her.
