I know younger generations don’t understand. He mentions DC United a lot, BUT this was and always be the house the Washington Redskins built. This was their home
@@TheLukeExplores I almost gave this video a thumbs down because You said that about MLS. When the "Redskins" were good; that place was standing room only! In the 1980's and early 1990's; they arguably had the best home field advantage in all of NFL football. Only other contenders were GB and KC.
The old Washington Senators played in that stadium, Ted Williams coached them for a couple of seasons. The Nationals also played there while their new stadium was being built. Of course , the skins played there as well for over 30 yrs. There’s a lot of history in that stadium. Just think of all the people who have come and gone, and now it stands completely empty.

Felt more like a construction zone rather than anything else tbh…. Standing dead center in the middle of the pitch, now that was something to experience. Hope you enjoyed 💯
I saw the Dead and the Allman Brothers here in 1973 while ending my tour of duty at Ft. Dix. We brought a boda bag full of grape juice, and a bag of food. But once you were 50 feet from.the dreaded single turnstile our bag of food got squished away from us and we saw the food bouncing along on the shoulders on the crowd, never dropping. The grape juice made it in with us. As soon as the Dead started playing, they sounded like they'd been jamming for an hour. I caught Gil Scott Heron at a small club and Herbie Hancock and Weather Report somewhere back there also in 1973. Then out in August to go to college in the bay area. Not bad, on to Keystone Korner then and saw all the jazz greats. Later in the 90's I filmed Pat Martino and Dave Liebman, and those are on my channel.
I grew up on Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, and Gil Scott Heron. I actually took percussion music lessons from the late Professor Eddie Ade Knowles, a member of Gil Scott Heron's crew. I saw Dead & Co in Saratoga Springs. Places may fall into disrepair but good taste in music is timeless.

It was the very first of the "cookie cutters." It's unique upper deck set it apart. But it was an impractical design. The scoreboard couldn't be seen by everyone. (Eventually the Redskins were so desperate to cram more seats in there, they simply covered up the scoreboard with more end zone seats.) The sideline seats were too low to the field. (That was a mistake made by every cookie cutter stadium, including the SkyDome. If you're sitting in the first row, then the deck should be at least six feet above the field to see over the football bench.). Baseball fans hated the lack of field-level seats in the outfield, plus the fact that it was so stinking hot.

Thank you so much for the tour!!! You did a fantastic job!!! It’s so sad that this wonderful stadium is in ruins! The Redskins had this place rocking!!! Seems a stadium becomes obsolete after about 30 years. The owners only care about money! Sad! I really appreciate your video!!!
RFK closed because DC United moved to the new Audi Field stadium next door to Nationals Park along the Anacostia waterfront. After their move, it was pretty much lights out at RFK save for a random concert or random event until the COVID shutdown closed it for good.
I still remember getting the programs booklets before entering the stadium. Luckily my grandparents had season tickets up until the 90s when they moved to FedEx field seen alot of games there with the fun bunch Art Monk Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders
I remember going to many skins games back when I was a kid in that stadium. For skins fans, this stadium was more than a venue, it was magic. EDIT: that big "Budweiser" sign in the back of the endzone was always my favorite thing to look at during timeouts.. I'm also surprised that nobody has stolen those monitors yet.
@@TheLukeExplores Thank you for being brave enough to go up and in there! I used to sit near this scoreboard when I went to Redskins games, and I would see that ramp & doorway and wonder what was inside. Your exploration fulfilled a long-held wish of mine!
Fascinante! Simplesmente adoro lugares abandonados…. O silêncio junto com mistério do local…. Medo também! Porque não? Mas sobre tudo… o silêncio e a liberdade.. muito top!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Looks like we are getting closer to the day this place gets torn down and the Redskins build a new stadium here. Almost wish they would just refurb it and put the bleachers back in and reopen it. I know that can't happen, but a guy can dream.
One time I went to a football game the redskins were playing Minnesota and John riggins was running his ass of so near the end everyone was chanting we want Dallas and the diesel took a bow and people was going nuts ahhhh what great memories, especially when the stands near the field were bouncing up and down, oooh I’m getting chills yes😊😊😊
Back down memory lane, I see the video I see the pain of the stadium fading fast. All the history going down the drain and I know it dying fast. I don't want to go but going down. Back down memory lane.
I just had to go read about this place. And according to my reading- it's up in the air whether this stadium will be demolished. A bill put forth to refurbish it for the Washington Commanders had already previously been passed by the House, early on in 2024. I read that it also, just passed in the Senate two weeks ago. So, it might actually be rebuilt. Looking like it.
Vikings fan here, this was one of my all time favorite ball parks. Such a shame that they let it go like this, hopefully the Redskins, (they're still the Washington Redskins in my book) will be able to return to this area again, even if it's in a new ball park. It would be good for the team and the city.
Went there in November’75. Watched the Redskins upset my 10-0 Vikings for their first loss of the season 31-30. I was so pissed. I was 12. If I remember, the Vikings got down 28-0, stormed back, but fell short. Seems like yesterday. I’m 61 now, and could care less about the NFL.
I too am a Vikings fan and remember that game! Fred Cox missed a fg at the end of the game!😢 He also missed an extra point! Still was a great season until the dreaded Hail Mary game against Dallas 🤬
That part of DC has a lot of abandoned buildings. Just down the street there are two abandoned hospitals, across the street from the Jail. BTW, do they have security or police to keep people out? I went last year and didn't see anyone. I found a truck in the lower level hallway and turned around.
DC is an odd place but there’s so many amazing abandoned places in the area. I saw one security truck in there during this explore but no issues, they used to have cameras on the front side but I’m not sure if they still work.
I'll talk about it. I used to go watch the Skins there 45 yrs ago. And the Senators. Best place to watch an NFL game still standing. Especially if Joe Gibbs is coaching and Riggins is running.
The continuing resolution bill passed two weeks ago allocated money to repair and upstate RFK and HOPEFULLY move the ‘skins back to DC. I hope they leave the outside exactly the same…it’s iconic!
I remember when they tore down Candlestick Park, where l attended numerous 49er and San Francisco Giants games. It was so sad, fortunately l was able to purchase my 49er season ticket seats, which are now in my living room.
I remember watching live aid concert on tv here in 85 . Sad to see this place end .so many memories especially watchin my browns as a kid battling against doug williams and that 80s redskins teams
Thank you so much for preserving this. Sad to see but hopefully it's being revitalised. I saw some Redskins games there (Now Commanders) I Saw a few of the old timer's baseball games there and saw the Nationals when they first used it in 20005. I know it's risky and potentially could get into a lot of legal woes if you're caught but this is worth it to have a little remnant of the past still alive.
I almost got shocked by the electrical gates in the front. There was no fences or barriers a few years ago to deter people from walking next to the entrance. They electrified the front gates where you walk in. I felt the static an inch from my hands just before touching them to see inside.
I did not know they were electric, I walked up to them and could have sworn I touched them but maybe I didn’t. The fence in the back however, absolutely did not have any electric issues
@@TheLukeExplores This was like 2 years ago. I sent a message to the property owners saying it was electrified and they quickly put fences up a few weeks later.
I went to multiple HFsestivals and other festivals in this stadium, I feel like I remember someone getting struck by lightning during the beastie boys set at RFK…
Being English it seems so strange to me that a stadium like this could be left abandoned even more so that you could just stroll through it.Coming from a small country where available land is at a premium, unused structures get knocked down and the space reused relatively quickly.

@@TheLukeExploresmy anxiety was sky high watching it 😂 I’d of never been able to do it alone
I like video, good video. Thumb up 👍
Thank you good sir. Always a pleasure
Saw Frankie Frankie Beverly & Maze there back in the day!!
Memories.
It's insane I'm watching remembering a Nationals game I went to there as a kid and you went to the exact spot with the camera a the top. Dope
Thanks for posting. Many memories seeing the Skins and Senators from the day.👍
🤝🤝
Still live in Washington DC thanks for showing
Yeah, no! There is NO way I'd ever be able to walk across that! I'd get dizzy, fall over and I'd be nothing but a puddle lol.
Don't think we grasp how big a place is, until someone stands alone there. Crazy! Nice work, even if I was wrong about my guess. 😜😆
I promise you I’ll never go across again. But it was semi safe, thick piece of wood. Dangerous explore, but so glad I got to see it before it’s gone. Hope you enjoyed!!
@@TheLukeExplores Gotta do crazy shit while you still can lol.
I did like it! Didn't think I would, but...I gave it a shot, and enjoyed! Was even happy to see your humor in there again lol.
@@SarcasticMary I’m glad you liked it! Different from the usual style but I’ll bounce back and fourth
@@TheLukeExplores Gotta have variety, makes a channel thrive for sure.
@@SarcasticMary paranormal to be introduced in the near future
Insane structure
Massive, so glad I got to see it before it’s gone- hopefully they renovate it instead of tearing the whole thing down
The whole thing is intimate to me. Some of the best moments of my life happened at RFK.
I was up in the area visiting in 2005 and caught a Nationals game there while their new park was being built . It was really cool considering by that time, most MLB parks had gone away from that design.
Thank you for watching!!! So much more to come:)
RFK closed because DC United moved to the new Audi Field stadium next door to Nationals Park along the Anacostia waterfront. After their move, it was pretty much lights out at RFK save for a random concert or random event until the COVID shutdown closed it for good.
Appreciate the insight, tbh is it bad I wish it stays abandoned? It’s so cool like this haha, hope you enjoyed!
I watched Frank Howard and The Washington Senators play there when I was a child - 2nd grade.
Man redskins games there were brutal for opposing teams
Great video bud. That scoreboard to guts to get in!
Thanks for watching!!
I still remember getting the programs booklets before entering the stadium. Luckily my grandparents had season tickets up until the 90s when they moved to FedEx field seen alot of games there with the fun bunch Art Monk Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders
They were having events there a few years back , I wonder what happened.
Great video, thanks. I've been wondering what condition RFK is currently in.
Thanks for watching man! I’m glad you liked it.
Probably one of the greatest experiences I’ve had working event security in that stadium. So sad how they just leave it like that
I remember the HF festival in RFK back I the 90s fun times great memories.
Wow! Pretty cool. All that loot to build, and ends up like that. Sad 😢
I saw a Nats game there in 2007! Hard to believe this is what it looks like now.
Went to a festival right next to that place it was crazy seeing such a big abandoned structure
Thanks for an awesome comment!!!
During the sixties , when I lived in D.C. I saw the Senators play many times. I also so Pele play when Santos played the Washington Whips.
Appreciate the insight, so cool to hear. Thanks for the comment
OMG LUKIE POOKIE THIS IS SUCH AN INCREDIBLE EXPLROE !!
Hell yessss I’m so glad you loved it
I got nervous as anything when he walked across the ladder!
I’m ngl I was nervous too😂 hope you enjoyed the video!
Porque não? Mas sobre tudo… o silêncio e a liberdade.. muito top!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for watching!!
😂😂 thank you for asking Angie
Really great video
Appreciate that a lot, new vid dropping later today 💯
It’s sad that the historical stadiums are all gone
I pass there almost everyday especially in the night it feels creepy so sad such an historic place Go Redskins❤
Back down memory lane, I see the video I see the pain of the stadium fading fast. All the history going down the drain and I know it dying fast. I don't want to go but going down. Back down memory lane.
It will never disappear, I wish I got to see it when I was younger…. The vibe was so odd being at the center of this massive place my myself
Wow that’s awesome!
This is crazy!
I too am a Vikings fan and remember that game! Fred Cox missed a fg at the end of the game!😢 He also missed an extra point! Still was a great season until the dreaded Hail Mary game against Dallas 🤬
This is my childhood here
Wish I had the chance to experience this amazing place
I remember coming here back in 2002 to see women's soccer. Got Mia Hamm's autograph as she leaving. It's a shame they couldn't find a use for it.
It’s really sad to see a stadium that’s at its end of existence.
I'll talk about it. I used to go watch the Skins there 45 yrs ago. And the Senators. Best place to watch an NFL game still standing. Especially if Joe Gibbs is coaching and Riggins is running.
GREAT VIDEOS, YOU ARE IN IT LIKE OUR NEW ERA INDIANA JONES !!
I wouldn’t go that far YET but I’m glad you loved it ❤️❤️
The continuing resolution bill passed two weeks ago allocated money to repair and upstate RFK and HOPEFULLY move the ‘skins back to DC. I hope they leave the outside exactly the same…it’s iconic!
I'd love to see what they do with it.
I saw the Senators with my Grandma play there in 1961.
A lot of great football games were played in that stadium especially in the 80s
Appreciate the comment and for watching! I would love to go back here at some point but I fear it’s too late. New video out in 15 mins btw!!
I went to HFStival in 1998 and Warped Tour 99 (in the parking lot) here
I almost got shocked by the electrical gates in the front.
Appreciate the insight, that’s a crazy comment! I definitely need to look into that- thanks for commenting!
Imagine how we feel here in Houston with the 60 year old Astro Dome with grass and weeds as tall as 8ft and rust, rats, snakes, etc...
Being English it seems so strange to me that a stadium like this could be left abandoned even more so that you could just stroll through it.Coming from a small country where available land is at a premium, unused structures get knocked down and the space reused relatively quickly.
