This is a very interesting tunnel with the train tracks and all! I rode my Harley through the tunnel in 2012. The lady said to be careful as the air vents can cause a motorcycle to crash. I smiled and the lady scolded me, I said " have you ever been on the windy interstates in South Dakota and Wyoming?" The winds have pushed me on a bike instantly to another lane. I had no problem with the vented wind, but did not like the tracks. A bike has to ride between the tracks because it is too narrow on both sides. That ride started in Richmond, VA.

It might be the longest highway tunnel. CPKC Railway has the 9 mile MtMcdonald tunnel in Alberta, Canada. BNSF railway has the 7.9 mile Cascade Tunnel under Steven's Pass in Washington state and 7 mile Flathead Tunnel in Montana, all railroad tunnels in North America.
I have been in both the Alaska and Cascade tunnels. I have never understood why people in Alaska claim this to be the longest. The ride through the cascade tunnel on a train took nearly 35 minutes, for us a little longer because the engine broke down in the last few miles and plunged us into darkness for a moment. Luckily we were going down hill so we coasted the last mile or so and had to wait on the side track for another engine to tow us.

I visited Whittier several times while I was living in Alaska. I enjoyed stopping at the wildlife conservation center, then going to the Portage Glacier lookout, popping through the tunnel for Ice Cream and sights, heading back through and on to Girdwood for dinner at the Double Musky Inn, then back home to Anchorage. Did this aboot twice a year for the 5 years I lived in Anchorage, and once when I was living in Fairbanks.
Thanks. That brings back memories as I lived in Alaska off and on from 1968 to 1987 and went to Whittier a number of times on fishing trips and such. You probably missed an opportunity by not catching the arrival of a train-ship and seeing how they connect the floating cars to the dock track and transfer them. Then again I don't know how often they're doing such operations any more. BTW your Mini 4 Pro did a good job tracking your car. I've got one too but have not had the opportunity to try "high speed" tracking. Need to get around to that some day.

Have you ever heard of the show, Railroad Alaska? I remember that tunnel being mentioned as essential for trade in and out of the state due to Whittier being a port town. There was actually an episode where they had to replace a long stretch of rail in the tunnel, which was hard to do thanks to the concrete between the rails, and the rails themselves being really long because they didn't really think of replacements, and cold on arrival to the tunnel and having shrunk due to that.

As a Norwegian, watching this video almost made me feel like home :) Granted, North America does not have that many long road tunnels as we do here, but it is cool to see a dual-purpose tunnel like that, which is something we don't have here, believe it or not. Now, 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) is not that long, when you compare it to the longer ones we have in Norway, with the longest here being the Lærdal tunnel at 24.5 kilometers (15.2 miles), or the new Rogfast undersea tunnel at 26.7 kilometers (16.6 miles), when it finishes construction somewhere around 2033

We were just on an 11 day cruise on Norweigan Sun in May of this year, I love Alaska. We live in Central FL till the end of the year but every other year we try to get back to Alaska as I have never seen mountains like those except in Europe. I have done 4 Alaska cruises now but none were out of Seward, all Seattle and once in Vancouver (which I wouldn't recommend). Thanks for the views and journey! Alaska is just stunning.
hey no problem!!! alaska never gets old and even though I've been there twice, each time was about 5 days...its never enough! next time your there be sure to do a cruise out of Seward! you wont regret it. there is the major marine wildlife cruise in Seward and the Seward Excursions that I did in the video! I would recommend the seward excursion mainly because you get to go on land!.....also! I may be uploading another video in Alaska in the next couple weeks....based out of Seward!
Back in the Eighties you had to load your vehicle including its contents on a car-train. It was very romantic. There are still two major car-train routes in Switzerland.
Head Engineer: "Okay Governor, it's time to dedicate the new tunnel opening up." Governor: "Wait, where's the second tube? Did you guys unfold the blueprint all the way?" Head Engineer: "Dammit ..."
Of all the times I have been to AK I never made this trip. Going back next year. I will have to do this. Did you happen to get to 7 glaciers bar/ restaurant? Great views.
You will love it! Unfortunately I didn't make it to 7 glaciers bar, but I am going back in the spring, so I'll be sure to stop in then, I can say i picked up a 12 pack of Alaskan Kolsch "the yellow can with the orca on the front" and it was amazing! Would recommend if you haven't tried 👍
Congressman Hale Boggs, Louisiana, was another passenger on Begich's plane. Boggs was on the Warren Commission, and later Boggs questioned the Oswald outcome. Boggs was a fierce public critic of J. Edgar Hover, and was strongly anti-organized crime. Decades ago, I saw a report, and there were more details than I now find. Unanswered questions cause conspiracy theories.
That ermin it is a cute little thing. I saw a weasel once in the woods of Northeast Ohio. It was really fast. I had a 22 rifle and by the time I raised the rifle it was gone. I would have felt bad if I shot it anyway. I'm glad I didn't.
Actually, Alaska is not all that "isolated"--some vast sections--for regular vehicular travel. They do have a comprehensive ferry network run by the State Transportation Department. The Southeastern terminus may be in Prince Rupert, B.C., and the farthest Western one may be Dutch Harbour in the Aleutians, not all that far from Mother Russia. The trips through their coastal waters are so long, that you drive your vehicle aboard, and take a stateroom, so that you have a highly generic form of the seacruises of the frilly luxury set.
I recognize that tunnel from a tv show i watched called railroad alaska and if i remember corectly it may have been the first couple if episodes but, as the train was heading tworads the tunnel to get to the bay so it could be loaded onto a boat the track crew had to replace one of the rails in the tunnels and they had to act fast because the train would be there in a few hours so they had to disconect the section of rail, somehow pry the rail up out of the concrete, and then somehow get the new peice of rail down before the train got there.
I hitchedhiked to get out of Whittier through the tunnel. Once on the other side I rode up to Anchorage on a girl's bike from Walmart that squeaked a lot. It took me almost a full day but I made it. I had a hangover from hell 🤣, i was hungry and thirsty, and very tired. Let me tell ya, I ain't never doing that again- I mean, the drinking 😵💫 part. The scenery was beautiful 😍. I imagined it like being in a different planet
That pepper spray isn’t gonna do shit to protect you from a bear. It doesn’t even work on humans. I accidentally sprayed myself with it as a kid and it didn’t incapacitate me. It was just uncomfortable. If you actually value your life you should get something like a Colt Anaconda instead.
@@timdienhart3738 thats what I was thinking. whittier is an awesome place! bet it was one heck one heck of an annivarsary!....thank you for checking out video!
That tunnel explains/demonstrates why Alaska has so little infrastructure. One can find longer tunnels .... constructed for cars (hence two lanes unlike the one in the video) .... in what "Americans" consider third world areas ...both in south-America and in Africa. It is not because of lack of mountains that Alaska do not have infrastructure like tunnels....
politely turn around and flip the bird.....then proceed to to floor it until you are out of the tunnel, and off the tracks.......or you could play it safe and pull into one of the emergency pullouts in the tunnel.....first option sounds more fun though!
The 5.3m to build that tunnel (I'm sure) all went towards actually building it. No union bosses to pay off, no kick backs to the Senators and such. Now-a-days that tunnel would be in the billions with all the 'greenies' getting in the way and halting progress. Good video
I'm based out of Arizona, but every once in a while I like to mix it up and take a trip to some place different....sometimes these places are a little scary, but thats the best part!

Wow, I went through that tunnel in July 2000, I didn't realize it had just opened (at least I don't recall that)...
Curious about the red/green traffic lights at 5:08 ...
me too!
Back in the Eighties you had to load your vehicle including its contents on a car-train. It was very romantic. There are still two major car-train routes in Switzerland.
Head Engineer: "Okay Governor, it's time to dedicate the new tunnel opening up."
Governor: "Wait, where's the second tube? Did you guys unfold the blueprint all the way?"
Head Engineer: "Dammit ..."
It's worth noting that, during WW II, the Seward repair docks wound up building some boats for the USN. The Buckner Building used to be kindna nice.
Northern Washington train tunnel is 7.8 miles long. Steven's pass. Been thru it.
Thank you for sharing!
Hi just stumbled on this video what a beautiful place could you do more on the railroad please
well done buddy, keep visiting new places when you get the chance.
You know I will! thanks for checking out the video Chris V!!!
@@jessiesdroneadventures7464 anytime you post I will watch
@@ChrisVargasrpht2000chris rock on! 🤘🤘
That looks like a tunnel I went through in British Columbia recently this year on the Trans Canada 🇨🇦 there!
What a beautiful part of America
Heck yea! Alaska is something else!
@@jessiesdroneadventures7464 If you need a lodge to stay at I can set you up. It is in Palmer. really nice. Cheapest around.
I went through this tunnel. Had two flat tires on way out. Truck was going sideways upon driving out.
800 dollars later was back on the road
oh wow! what a journey...at least you were able to get back on the road
All I kept thinking,is what if you get a flat🥺
That animal was so cute! I want one now. This is your fault, Jesse. lol
Guilty 🙋♂️ lol
Congressman Hale Boggs, Louisiana, was another passenger on Begich's plane.
Boggs was on the Warren Commission, and later Boggs questioned the Oswald outcome. Boggs was a fierce public critic of J. Edgar Hover, and was strongly anti-organized crime.
Decades ago, I saw a report, and there were more details than I now find.
Unanswered questions cause conspiracy theories.
the more I read into it, the more I cant help but want to put a video together on the subject
Only 2.5 miles long = the longest in North America? Wouldn't have thought that ...
Mosquito is the Alaskan State Bird. It looks nice but the mosquitos are worse there than most anywhere else.
thank you for sharing!
You need to play the Batman theme while in that tunnel, it's pretty epic
I've ridden my motorcycle through there.
You forgot about the railroad that is the lifeline to a lot of off grid homestead ❤
I went through this tunnel on the way to Cordova when I was six and it blew my mind.
Alaska's Fort Apocalypse S4:E6 of Mysteries of the Abandoned on max has a segment about the Buckner building and its history.
ooooooh! i will check that out!
That ermin it is a cute little thing. I saw a weasel once in the woods of Northeast Ohio. It was really fast. I had a 22 rifle and by the time I raised the rifle it was gone. I would have felt bad if I shot it anyway. I'm glad I didn't.
yea they are! they are cute and quick!
Drove it in 2001 very interesting.
thank you for sharing!
I can attest to the size of Alaska. Mid 22 I spent 10 days in Anchoridge to Seward. Yet went looking at the map it was a small portion of the state.
Looks like a lot of wobble with those railroad tracks!
A quarter of a mile longer than the Snoqualmie Tunnel in Washington.
'Heres Johnny!'
Lol 😆
What time of year did you go to Whittier?
End of october...from about the 20th to the 26th!
makes even PA turnpike tolls look cheap
Is Katty finally waking 🆙️ for breakfast?! I don't know. Namastè.
year 2000??? I remember driving thru that tunnel back in late seventies when I lived in Anchorage.
thats what the article stated 🤷♂️

That road/highway is probably legit detailed on the tunnel mathetically, 25 or 40 mph.
Weird. The following video was Adam the Woo also covering Whittier. Was this some kind of TH-camr's getaway?
In gta 5, there was no human being to warn you of an oncoming train😂
Where are used to be a nice little hamlet, thanks to princess tours and the greed of tax revenue, it’s a crowded place. That’s just getting polluted.
I WENT IN THAT TUNNEL DURING MY TRIP TO ALASKA
Ive taken the train in my youth
Ate Baked Alaska once.
Can I guess Jesse where you might be at in this video?
Go for it
@@jessiesdroneadventures7464 it looks like Whittier Alaska
I didn’t watch your video before answering. My wife and I were in Whittier 12yrs. ago on our 25th anniversary. We Loved it!,Great Video
A one way tunnel? How do the cars and the train make the return trip?
I am kind of claustrophobic and you will not find me in that tunnel
Just stick to the rivers and the lakes that your used to
What if a train comes up and bumps your ass!!!😂🤣😂🤣
politely turn around and flip the bird.....then proceed to to floor it until you are out of the tunnel, and off the tracks.......or you could play it safe and pull into one of the emergency pullouts in the tunnel.....first option sounds more fun though!
Sorry Mr. Governor I’m gonna need that $11 or you can just turn right on back…
The 5.3m to build that tunnel (I'm sure) all went towards actually building it. No union bosses to pay off, no kick backs to the Senators and such. Now-a-days that tunnel would be in the billions with all the 'greenies' getting in the way and halting progress. Good video
You're forgetting the profits for company owners and "investors".
Government isn't the only, or even main, source of corruption.
jesse where are you based i thought you were mainly arizona based........you go to all the places i m to scared to go
I'm based out of Arizona, but every once in a while I like to mix it up and take a trip to some place different....sometimes these places are a little scary, but thats the best part!
Looks like a great place to retire to. Time to break open the old Google machine!
