After 5 years went off T3 and T4 medications. Have energy again, sleeping good, normal appetite and as Type 1 Diabetic went from 95 units insulin daily to 45 units. 😮 Blood work never indicated I was hypothyroid. Thank you for reassurance and studies.

Is Armour thyroid considered " nedication" even if it's natural dessicated thyroid? It'svexpensive and only available with prescription. That's why I want off. I've been on it it for almost 10 years and synthetic for 45 before that-- diagnosed hypo thyroid as an infant.

As a former hospital administrator, I was intensely interested in alternative methods to treat Hashimoto's. I changed my diet and went gluten free and no sugar. I exercised daily and took supplements including seaweed iodine. I started to experience severe depression, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues and severe body aches. In the meantime, I moved and changed endocrinologists and stopped taking levothyroxine. My levels were so severe that I nearly went into coma. Went back on correct levothyroxine level, kept the strict diet and exercise and now feel like a million bucks. There are some of us who do well on the medication and would probably die without it.

I agree with you. I am not someone who likes to take medicine. My levothyroxine is the only medicine I take, because I do need it. I am 5"6, and weigh 113 pounds. This is because I have been on keto, and swim 5 days in the week for one hour. I also fast for 18 hours everyday. I am 59 years old, and I have never felt better in my life. I remember when I was dragging and had memory loss. When people meet me, they don't believe my age. They think that I am a lot younger.

I want to wean off my desiccated thyroid 15 mg alternating with 30 mg.
Been taking thyroid meds for 17 years. 13 years ago I lost 100 lbs and by the Grace of God I've kept it off. I've had hair loss on and off over the years. Tested negative multiple times for antibodies so not believed to be caused by Hashimoto's. I had also tested Iodine (both blood and urine testing) multiple times all Low 30's. No practitioners ever addressed the low iodine. On my own I finally began using a Kelp seasoning on my food and the last time Iodine was checked in 2018 it was High at 108. I have over the years felt like I might have had some fleeting bouts of 'hyper' at times. I stopped going to conventional endocrinology doctors because they were not addressing my concerns, no interested in the root cause or providing any healing. I follow neurosurgeon and health educator, Dr. Jack Kruse MD and I'd read on his Optimal Health Forum of folks using red light therapy for healing their hypothyroidism. So was nice to see your comment that you are using Red Light Therapy.....wondering what device you use for that? and wondering what you mean by super-clean diet? I work on my diet a lot.
I have Vegetarian Tyrosine 480 mg in capsules on hand from Food Research a Brand that is 100% Food but I'm not sure how and when to take it. Suggested use on their web site says 1-6 capsules per day. I got it and several of their other thyroid supplements to prepare to taper off my desiccated thyroid prescription. Wondering if that compares to your Tyrosine dose? If you see my reply please let me know.

So, I decided to keep going to see how I feel. I'm a week in, so far, so good. I get blood-work in about another week, so I'm interested in seeing what it says. Either I was totally sleep deprived, or ??? I feel much more calm.

For several years now I have been taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine every morning. Like clockwork I would feel very sped up and sweat heavily. I first thought it was just menopause symptoms. My doctor at that time didn't think it was caused by my medication. So I continued taking it at the prescribed dose. Over time I began to feel very edgy and easily aggitated .
finally I saw another article about people being overprescribed so I cut my pills in half and continued at the lower dose. The symptoms began to lessen over the course of a few weeks but not gone completely. So I began experimenting with not taking it at all. I feel way calmer than I have in years. I do intend to discuss this finding with my new doctor (the other one retired)

Good for you. After my first sign on a routine bloodwork, my Dr. said "let's watch it" and didn't say much more, other than, if it doesn't self-correct, she can prescribe something. So, I looked into diet. Stopped all gluten, all refined sugars, see oils, soy and corn products. I started feeling pretty good and my number got slightly better but still FELT much better. I told my Doc about my diet changes, she just stared at me, like "ok that's good but..." Why don't they ever care about that? Anyway, I digress...she right there and then prescribed me 88 mgs of synthroid. Just a week ago I took one, morning, empty stomach as it said. 15 mins later, my heart was palpitating so fast, I was shaking and had to lay down...other than this sluggish thyroid...I am fit, 56, it freaked me out, it didn't really go...it lasted on and off all day and super anxiety feeling. I stopped, didn't take another and of course it's been the holidays just now...I feel like I don't even want to tell her. lol I'm not taking that no way. I have never felt like that in my life...and that cannot be good. Thanks for writing what you did..because I hadn't found anyone saying that...I wish you great things with your new Dr. Happy 2024!

Update: I saw an Endocrinologist as my Thyroid nodule is growing pretty fast and although I opted NOT to take the 88mg Synthroid prescribed by my GP OVER THE PHONE um…the Endo confirmed that even tho Drs like to downplay Levoxa/Synthroid’s effects THEY ARE REAL…she said it can speed hearts to a dangerous degree! A Dr told the TRUTH for once…she did however hahaha still prescribe 25mgs. I just said, INSIDE VOICE um fast growing nodule, 10mm in 3 mos. It’s now 2cm (they initially told me to come back in 5 yrs) uh huh 🤔 swollen lymph nodes in my neck now, throat pain. Guess what?! TIME FOR NEW DRS - good luck to all of us out here. I am in Canada and LITERALLY unless you are broken, bleeding or blood work says you’re dying? YOU WAIT…sometimes over a year until now? Oh yeah, that thing you caught early? Has now metastasized - happened to my Grandma, my mother…gone and they both knew early and were dismissed. I turn 57 today…and if I have to pay to play, so be it, I understand it’s a privilege, and believe me I am grateful to have it. But I’m not being left to twist out here…I’d rather be anywhere but in Canada rn and Canadians will Know what I say is true. WE ARE BROKEN. Wee birthday rant ✨😎🫶🩷 cuz today…I change this course of action. Good luck out there will diet, hormones and gut/brain/thyroid connection 👍

I do hope things workout for you. I did end up having to take my thyroid rx . I do feel alot better these days. Sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad. All medications come with side effects unfortunately but sometimes we have to weigh in on the consequences if we don't take them. Thyroid is a hormone and does regulate our systems. I developed very high blood pressure when i wasn't taking it. Turns I need to take it whether I like it or not. My blood pressure is back in safe limits now. Maybe try the lower dose. You were probably overprescribed the first time. An endocrinologist is your best course of action. Anyway I hope you find the right answers in your case and get the right treatment.@@hezebelbeing

@@santiagonunez6294March to Sept 2017 I did a doctor supervised liquid diet with success, loved it was so easy. Lost a LOT. After the process was over I started to gain steady. It was only a 1/2 pound a week, now that doesn't sound like much but OMG it all adds up after 6 months. I watch some Keto doctors on youtube, like Dr Berg and Ken Berry and read a lot and started KETO in Aug of 2018. I found it was not hard at all since I did my research. I also had a great frame of mind going in. I found out after a week that my FIBRO pain was helped GREATLY by KETO and after a few months, KETO is my way of life. When pandemic hit I live a lone and was thrown off with my feelings and ate a few NON keto items THINKING it was going to make me happy. WRONG!! MY FIBRO pain came back and it was SO HARD to get back on KETO train again. After 7 months of trying to get back in ketosis, doing great for 5 days only to back slide, I was in trouble. Gained the dreaded Cl9 pounds. I sit here full aware my health and semi pain free life depends on my diet. This is for me, we are not all the same. GOOD LUCK!

I was in 2013 administered by my general doc to take thyroid hormone based only on thyriod test and on his imperssion regarding my health condition . I felt immidiately that it improved my condition Because my heart was already on a brink of colapse and I was too.
Only after I've done USG check of thyroid I realized that I have thyroid gland half size of normal . Since I started hormone I started to live normal life like never before. For previous 50 years as I can remember I used to tell that any heat is better than not enough. I enjoyed outside heat in tropical sun in 35C deg . I could wear thick winter sweeter in hot sunny day. Now I care rather to keep dressed not too much - because heat is unbareable for me and I have much more energy than 20 years ago. Tried how would it go without medication and within 3 days felt so bad that was forced to go back. It was my test and I am not planing blood test because one of such tests resulted in damage of my arm vein and results in numbers are so clear as inside feeling.

Dangerous to do that since your thyroid is gone. It could cause death, you are in a position where you NEED THYROID REPLACEMENT FOR LIFE. Please do not risk your health like that. Getting off thyroid needs to be done gradually and only those with functioning thyroid have that option, and best case scenario with help from a doctor or naturopath. Hope you are doing better! 😊❤

I got pregnant a couple of months after starting the treatment and now have to keep taking it throughout my pregnancy, but dr says that as soon as we're in the clear he'll gradually take it off. I'm also seeing a naturopathy doctor so I can support my thyroid during pregnancy and eventually make a smoother transition to no meds.

I think the manufacturing is sometimes inconsistent and/or the fillers sometimes affect absorption. I was on the natural forms of the meds for awhile but they were wildly inconsistent and had supply issues too. On synthetic prior to that and had felt it was contributing to hpa axis problems and "adrenal crashes". Have been gluten-free for 8 years. I took levothyroxine lowest dose n symptoms got worse n v dark depression set in. I slept round the clock. Ate sugar. After 6 weeks I got retested n I got a 7 on THS....but I feel worse. I've tried halving dose..but foir what I ate in those 6 weeks I should be dead! I was never hungry..just nauseated. N when hunger did strike I ate wrong foods.
Interestingly...I had to cut back on anti depressants as they contraindicated to thyrx. Now they think NY liver is in trouble...that could be reason in first place! The clinic took my lab work and said I was hypo thyroid ang prescribed levothyroxine. I took that for a while, I seemed to gain weight. Then I tryied Synthroid, I did not like the way I felt on that. So I ended up trying Armour thyroid, and have been on that ever since. I do not or never had much of the symptoms of hypo thyroid. I do not get cold, and most of the time I am always warm and do not like the heat. I am not tired except for when I go to work and wake at 3am to get ready. My lab work I don't understand, my doctor just resigned. I am not sure, but I do not think I need to be on this even though I have taken it for a long time , I think it made me gain weight actually. The levothroid did.

I had Grave's disease as a child and had radioactive iodine treatment. I could not convert the synthroid so I have to take cytomel with it. It was the only way to get my thyroid stable. Is there any alternative to these meds? I am concerned about the possibilities of war famine and hyperinflation ahead of us. How do I survive if I can't get my meds? I can't get more than 90 days at a time. Is there a plant or any other way to stay alive in a situation where I can't get access my thyroid meds?

Last time it was checked it was at 475, and he just shakes his head. I am at 300 for my everyday dosage which he tells me is sky high, and if I take the generic it really goes up. So I take the brand, Synthroid and it seems to help bring it down. I have been fighting this stinkin' thyroid for over 25 years now. My neighbor had hers removed, and I asked him if he would just take this thing OUT but he said NO, never. My cousin had it and after they took it out she gained a boatload of weight to the point she is in a wheelchair because of it. I don't want that!! That girl is enormous!!! OMG. I am just tired all the time and tired of dealing with it.

    • @MrsKunis

Don't remove you thyroid. That won't fix the problem. The problem is Thyroid Perioxidase antibodies (TPO). Take 20,000 IUs of vitamin D3. Change your diet to anti-inflammatory foods of fruit, vegetables, water, a Brazil nut per day for selenium. Improve your gut health. Cut out junk. No dairy, meat, or eggs, no fried foods. Calm your immune system down. It will lower the TPO antibodies to normal range. Test the TPO antibodies at each blood draw. You have to request each time.

Many of Dr Westin Child's commenters claim they now feel much better after following his protocol...some say nothing ever changed for them. He doesn't recommend anyone stop their current thyroid med on beginning his program, & tells everyone they must continue to have their blood levels checked regularly as ordered by their own private physician. He doesn't take on any patients himself. He uses vitamins & what I call thyroid "boosters". Some claim they have been able to completely stop their thyroid med, but it doesn't work for everyone, & he openly admits that.
I have hypothyroidism & took 100 mcg Levothyroxin when I started on his program & diet to clean up the gut. (I've also been diagnosed as prediabetic, & my glucose levels are now within normal on his program) I have experienced much more energy, less depression & brain fog, & have better ability to concentrate now. My Levothyroxin was reduced to 75 mcg by my private physician recently due to better blood levels. I've been on the program about 6 months now. I will admit I do not buy his products, as they are just too expensive for me. I go to my local healthfood store, & buy the best similar products that contain what he uses in his products.

I'm coming off of the Levothroxine because I have a healthy thyroid yet because I had joint pain and swelling of the face she thought putting me on thyroid meds was the best thing to do I didn't question her she was a doctor I trusted her. I started in February and ended up in the ER Tuesday they stopped me cold turkey and said they hope my thyroid comes back I'm in 4 the day of withdrawal and I am really sick. the blood test shows my thyroid now is a 11. So very low. How long does withdrawal take and does your thyroid come back? Can't believe she could prescribed something I didn't need.

3 years ago i got a blood test done and my tsh level was 3.8. I was told that it was higher than what they desire , they did the ultrasound om the tyroid gland and found one 3x4mm diameter nodule. My free t3 and t4 levels were optimal. Anti tpo test results were normal. However after the ultrasoud, right away they told me that it was hypothyroid and i’ve been on levotiron treatment since 2020. What should i be thinking? Am i hypothyroid or not? I believe 3.8 is not so high. Sİnce that day with the medication i gained 20 kilograms and my whole metabolism crashed. 😢
