- 19-year-old son Suraj Jadhav on 22 November 2023 set himself ablaze before his mother. Before taking the step, all he said was: "They won't give Marathas reservation otherwise...!" Every time sentiments peaked and protests for Maratha reservation went out of hand, one common phenomenon which recurred was Maratha youth dying by suicide. But while many question the rationale behind taking such an extreme step, for scores of Marathas, those who gave up their lives are perceived by many in the community as heroes.

That mother's tears and pain are too painful to watch. She lost a son and burned herself for no reason. However, Marathas demand reservation on what basis? Have Marathas ever been discriminated in history? Have anyone said to a Maratha that they cannot touch others? Have anyone called Marathas a backward, illiterate, uneducated people from jungles even though he may hold a doctorate degree? Because of powerful and huge communities asking for reservations, the people who actually needs reservation will suffer and will eventually diminish from society.

But " Marathas " are originally a congregation of lower and few middle castes during the Maratha (Maharashtri) uprising. That community didn't exist long before the Maratha empire and growned with that regime. Many peoples who served under that empire adopting that caste title, asserting "kshatriyawood" (which, like in most parts of Peninsular/Southern India, wasn't a truly existing caste group) and a imagined lineage.
Marathas are Kunbis, Dhangars, Lohars, etc. in truth.
Social stigmas against Marathas existed. Pancha Dravida Brahmins, peculiarly the Deshashtas, never recognised these people in their new status, as well have did in a more subtle way the few other Marathi upper-castes.
Some caste-based discrimination cases against Maratha persons are reported (notably a housekeeper in an upper-caste household).
But the problem with applying reservations to Marathas is that, even if they are theorically from a lower caste background, they are, in fact, a dominant caste group. They constitute a numerically and politically self-conscious population that exercise some power in all Maharashtra and Marathi society.
They had notably reversed for a few times the "caste order" with the independence, when Gandhi was killed by Ghodse. His murder have been tactically and well used (its an academically documented and noticed fact), for taking power from the well-doing Deshashta Brahmins, and dishonouring their community in large.
Who thought that one day people will fight & protest to be called themselves "Backward caste" 😫
If you don't call yourself backward then even after getting 98 percentile in jee you won't get decent brach in good college

Suicide for reservations is meaningless when many more of other communities are unemployed. "नजरों पे लगी है पाबंदी,दीदार की बातें करते हैं। "All persons must be educated about about their existence in society and and their families.

Reservation is must in Indian society. Only for people were historically socially discriminated and marginalized for long time. Women are also one of these groups. But people who were kings or are landed community don't deserve reservation at all.
They can give SC ST reservation but not a population of 27% of total a mere 10% reservation. That’s totally unfair
We should scrap all reservations and ensure that merit is the only way to gain seats in jobs or colleges. Else, mark my words, in the coming years, reservations will go out of hand and the general category will be the oppressed one. In such a case, why would anyone want to stay in India? Here, talent is not appreciated. Only reservations for vote bank!

Marathas are landed community and were kings. They aren't socially discriminated historically. They don't deserve reservation at all. They are being stubborn right now and wants to show their caste power that's all....

Eventhough I am not a maratha but I know some friends who are. Not all Marathas are powerful community. Many of the Marathas are agrian. Everyone knows how farmers die in Marathwada. They are backward economically very much...

Bjp gave 70 percent reservation to Jammu and kashmiri people including Muslims bakarwal and pahadi to set the caste equation right before electing in next state election. Pahadis are saying that their complete votes are gonna be to BJP right now. Large section of Bakwarwal also gonna vote for bjp now. Bjp has already set it's strong ground in Jammu Kashmir. Even after huge Muslim population BJP gonna win in j and k.

Go and check ground reality lts very easy to comment from sitting while laying on bed with AC you will find many of these families are managing their monthly expenses with 2000-3000/ month. Family have no properties, youth is jobless can't afford higher education fees how can you expect to survive and people are foolish to sacrifice their lives

Marathwada and Vidarbha region contribute less.
Vidarbha even don't have proper water supply. It's always draught. Only Nagpur in Vidarbha is doing good.
If you remove Konkan (Mumbai) and Western Maharashtra (Pune) rest of Maharashtra is not that developed and people don't have better occupation.
Maharashtra's GDP is on depending Mumbai and Pune region.
The problem is not with reservation its the government economic policy.
There are less budget allocation for Research and development all the major industries requires highly qualified and experiences which makes the lower stratas unemployable. All the top IITians brain drains ends up working for foreign companies instead of innovating new ideas or cracking UPSC which is not wrong but not worth according to the knowledge they have acquired, its like all their lives they will practice running but ends up coaching boxing because our system and mentality are not systematic and allinged in the way where people should go.
In the end its not only the government but our mentality as well which needs to be reformed and make it more innovative.
Why can't maratha help each other grow instead of reservation from Government?
Anybody from community wants money for the education then maratha community should gather and help..
