  • Green Lane, with its steep slope and aggressive curves is one of the most dangerous streets in Philadelphia during snow and ice storms. This video shows captures the scene out front this afternoon, as drivers struggled to gain traction along the slippery roads. Many were stuck for long stretches, while other motorists became impatient waiting. video © Roger Barone/photos from philly.

All of those that were stuck likely believed the tire salesman that said, "oh yeah, these all season tires work great in snow! You'll be fine".
I'd love to know how much weight was in the Ford workman's van. For being RWD and starting from a stop, he did just fine! By far, the best 2WD in the video. Also notice the AWD Subaru Impreza hatchback that easily followed him up the hill. The BMW sedan likely had the X-drive all wheel drive, too.

Thank modern tire and wheel design, wider tires that float instead of biting, and lower profile tires with harder rubber. Older front drive cars with a bit narrower tires and higher side walls, and softer rubber were great in snow and ice. I rarely got stuck, but now you need all wheel drive or four wheel drive.

Had a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina that was equipped with 195/75/14 tires from the factory, and you are right skinny or narrow tires are so much better in the snow. Wide tires are great in the summer for handling, but terrible in the winter. I put Cooper Xtra Trac since discontinued tires on it and it was just a wonderful winter car.

    Buy snow/winter tires.
Once we had a very cheap car (Dacia) with winter tires.
When al the expensive fancy cars couldn't drive in the snow, we drove without any problem. :-)
You just have to spent money on tires and not on the eyecatching things /cars.... My opinion.

You're right. I had a 1999 Ford Escort wagon (FWD) with winter tires, I'd pass 4x4 and AWD vehicles on the highway no issues. Because they had summer tires. Even uphill the winter tires make a huge difference.

If snow tires, especially studded for ice and hard packed snow won't help in said conditions, the drag tires and tires specifically designed for NASCAR , rain tires, mud tires, are all just a gimmick. Go put summer tires on a Jeep Wrangler, even with lockers, and see how poorly it does in extreme off road conditions.

That is WAY TOO STEEP even with winter tires on. Cars can only get up that steep a grade if they have All-wheel-drive PLUS a good set of winter tires on all 4 corners. Front-wheel-drive and winter tires just won't be enough to get up a hill that steep when it is covered with even just 1" of snow.

Just a question for those experienced with traction control , which would be better in a situation like this, to keep the Traction control on or to turn it off, in case you only have all season tires

    • @scrambler69-xk3kv
      @scrambler69-xk3kv 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Just buy some winter tires. All season tires are a joke. The rubber stays hard in cold temps and they are worthless. Winter tires have a completely different tread much more aggressive, and the rubber is a different compound that allows the rubber to stay soft in cold temps and get a grip. It is not only about going but you must stop and go around turns and your life as well as the others on the road that you may crash into are worth something. People do yourself a favor and go to a tire store and just look at the difference between winter tire tread and all season tire tread. I wish tire companies would have never cone up with that term all season, because it is false. Maybe three season but not in snow.

Front wheel drive goes no where in snow and ice. Might as well stay home. You need 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive for snow and ice and it helps to have some snow tires. Chains work even better even on 4 wheel drive. I have no problems driving my Cherokee Jeep with 4 wheel drive. Put it in double low 4 wheel and I can go anywhere.

Also, if you're going to drive it normally, just BARELY accelerate until you gain momentum, then do not stop! People should have waited at the bottom of the hill, let one car go at a time, gaining momentum, and making it all the way up.

I do love how everybody can apparently read the sidewalls of the tires in this video to tell who has snow tires and who doesn't, lol.

+l337pwnage The evidence is in how much traction they have to go up the hill. Almost EVERY time I see somebody wrecked or stuck they're on summer or all season tires. I've NEVER helped anybody get unstuck that had Blizzaks on.

Winter tires are very different looking large aggressive knobs for lack of a better term are very apparent on winter tires whereas summer or all season tires appear almost smooth along the edge of the tire. Do yourself a favor go to a tire store in the winter months when winter tires are on the sales floor and you will see what I am talking about.

@@scrambler69-xk3kv You're thinking of the old "Mud and Snow" tires which were specced out when most roads were not even paved.
Decades ago, now, they developed a tire spec for paved roads called "Snow and Ice" tires, and they are much better on pavement than the old "Mud and Snow" tires. These tires are easily spotted in person, but not on a low rez video. They often look similar to modern "All Seasons" but with much more aggressive siping.
Also, a lot of the technology for "Snow and Ice" tires is in the compound, which you can only tell through touch(they are really soft, often) or chemical analysis.

Typical Philly, doing something that no one else who lives in a snowy area would do. And yes ,as a native,I can say that.

LOL You would never last in Canada! That's a light dusting where snow tires are mandatory in almost every province for insurance liability coverage. Plus just common sense.

snow tires are only mandatory in quebec, but you do get insurance discounts for having them elsewhere

How long are those two cars at three minutes going to spin their tires. It's time to find another route if your car won't make it up the hill. What are you waiting for, your transmission to burn up.
