What happens when it snows in Vancouver (2011)

  • Yes I know... another snow video... I couldn't help myself. This video was shot on the 29th Ave hill from Boundary Rd in Vancouver.
    Here's the first video ( • What happens when it s... )
Once again Vancouver drivers prove they are the best at navigating the snow. From little sports cars to full on 18 wheeler tractor trailers. My favorite part is when the prepared people zoom up the hill past all the people sliding down the hill.

The problem is that sometimes Vancouver goes years without any snow. If there is snow at all, it is for 1 or 2 days. It does not get very cold (just above freezing) so the snow is heavy, wet, and super slippery. It is not like the dry, light, powdery snow in other parts of Canada. Nobody wants to spend a bundle of cash on snow tires when they may never be used. This is the problem. They also don't salt and sand the roads until it's too late.

    • @sinodeutsch5777
      @sinodeutsch5777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

...you do realize that EVERYWHERE in Canada gets the same wet heavy slippery snow too =p it's more common in VAN but it's hardly unique to here. if fact TO gets slushy snow pretty much as often as VAN... it just also gets the dry light snow too cuz it snows twice as much and -10 to 0 is the high, now the low as it is in Van.
      it's all about the tires.

When driving on snow or ice you can avoid getting traction by remembering to spin your tires as fast as you can so they get good and hot. If you start to slide, lock up your brakes and turn the wheel real sharp.

I couldn't but notice that the comment section always talked about winter tires. And yes while they make a massive difference. The fact is you are still going to slip and slide. There is more too it then just winter tires.
    For example
    1 - Proper threshold braking
2 - Proper driving menu over
    3 - Good weight distribution
    4 - 4x4 trumps any 4x2s rear or front
5 - Most vehicles have pretty poor differential for icy road conditions.
6 - Sometimes it's just unavoidable unless you do not drive. There always going to be situations you cannot control. Like a long section of wet black ice, or other sliding cars, or having to menu over around stuck vehicles.
Note - Pick up drivers, put around 300 pounds along the rear axis evenly distributed, much better!
And bring a winter survival kit (Blanket, first aid, extra cloth, water, emergency flashlight(Warning lights) and a small shovel) You may be a safe and cautious driver but you can't predict everything, be prepared.
And ffs, I see this all the time be here is 2 menuovers that you SHOULD know but rarely do I ever see anyone do it.
1 - Don't spin your tire too much
2 - Reverse as much as you can, then forwards and rock the car, repeat, further rocking the car, repeat till you are out. You should be able to get unstuck doing this.... 90% of the time. At least.
Source - I used to drive 3 hours a day northern Alberta in the dead of winter, both country and city.

People if you are in a situation like this. First rule to get unstuck in snow. STOP TURNING THE FREAKING WHEEL. Keep the wheel straight only turn the wheel slightly in the direction you want to go. Trust me. See how far the guy in the white car is turning his wheel. Way to much. When your wheels are turned that far your stopping your forward movement. You want to roll over the snow. Not push the snow.

You are assuming you know if there isn't a bunch of black ice under that. If it rained before it snowed and froze. Not even 4x4 + winter tire + good driving is going to be to drive through it effectively
Don't tell me otherwise, if you don't believe me look up Ontario ice storm (The famous ice storm), highly trained highly prepared fire fighter trucks were unable to drive though it. There wasn't even that much snow! Just ice
What I am saying is. Snow isn't the issue, ice is the issue. You are making the assumption that there isn't much ice, just snow. For all we know it could be pure black ice under that.
This is of course Vancouver, rarely does it snow. Rains all the time. You got the perfect situation. It's just warm enough during the day to rain all day, freeze at night, and snow. This being Vancouver that only has a few inchs of snow a year. People aren't that prepared or trained. I am from Alberta where winter is a little bit more hellish.

And then it freezes with the overnight low temperatures. My car is a RWD. As long as the winter tires are on, the snow and ice are not a problem.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I drive for a living in montreal and i know a thing or two about driving in the snow. Moving your wheels from left to right while being semi easy on the gas can help a lot in situations when you're not particularly stuck in the snow but lack the traction to move forward. It helps as the car can inch to the left and right while grabbing some traction from undisturbed ground. It is easier to move to an angle up a hill than to go straight up.

Or what's the secret, how do you guys get your driving license for example? Here in Hungary we first learn the "KRESZ" it's like the Hungarian highway code (also we pass a first-aid exam). Then we drive ~500-600 km, ~40-50 hours with a tutor/instructor, then we have a drivig exam and if we pass, that's it. After that we have to figure out stuff for ourselves.

That one day off the year when it's really bad weather makes proper tiers worth it.
I have experienced something like this In northern part of Norway.
No one got stuck, but you suddenly found yourself sliding when you want to stop or break for corners.
I was not able to accelerate beyond 20 kmh, that is unusual for me when I am using a Audi quattro with good winter tires.
Sometimes mother nature just wants to troll you.
Any fool can drive when winter comes.
Just a shame that people don't get to practice as often when they live south of the snow belt.
Because you know, they think they don't need it.

i still have nightmares of that winter. the city decided only to plow the main roads and left most of the secondary and side roads untouched. it snowed, froze, and then snowed again. vancouver only gets a few days of snow in winter, so most people are on all seasons, and then there are those who think summer tires are perfectly fine >_

not surprising to see this in Vancouver. the snow tends to be wetter and slippier so its a coin toss for anyone. i run with ice radials oct to march cuz im farther north(mid BC) but when it gets like this, ill stay home lol. great job capturing all the action on Boundary.

The law of physics that is most applicable to winter driving is Newton's first law of motion, which states in part: “An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” This law is often called “the law of inertia.” Essentially this means that , and that ends class for today . There will be a test on this tomorrow

This is taken in Vancouver. This is the warmest and wettest geographic area of Canada. The vast majority of drivers have less than 20 cumulative hours experience driving on the white stuff.
typically it snows a wet sticky mess late one evening and turns to rain by the mid morning. An average year sees this happen 1-3 times

There's a small hill (steeper than that shown here) in front of my house. Years ago, whenever it snowed, I spent hours pulling people up the hill with my truck. Since the road is more level in the next block, I now put up detour signs instead of wasting fuel. Problem solved. By the way, I never criticized those people. It doesn't snow frequently enough to justify special tires or bi-annual tire changes.
