I was born in 1972. I grew up i n a low income group family. My dad work 365 days a year. And I have to help my dad with his biz from 13 years old. I would wake up at 430am o work before going to school. After my secondary school I did a diploma in Computer Science. And then I got a 1-way ticket to further my study in USA. In USA, I have to work 30-40 hours per week to support myself. During summer I work 80 hours/day. Took me many years to graduate but I did it. I have the same attitude when I started working. I'm 52 years old now and I'm now retired. I harvest what I sow. As for those who are not willing to put in the hard work, they too will harvest what they sow.
Thanks and agree with your POV. At the same time, bad bosses and managers should not use the term "strawberry generation" to excuse their terrible character and behaviour towards their employees. Work harmony is a two way street.
strawberry bosses don last long unless the top management boomer retire. otherwise stucked between top management boomer and gen z strawberry bosses will die faster
why should a youngster die for the company and work beyond the expected hours when the company can retrench employee like nobody business? Mr loo, sadly this is not the 80s or 90s where employee can stay in a company for 20 to 30 years and get retirement benefit or golden handshake . companies can no longer keep anyone for that long and want you to leave on your own accord if they deem your role no longer valid. I believe this has nothing to do with strawberry gen or being hardworking but rather the change in business and corporate mindset... i have seen people who are passionate in the company getting asked to leave even if they worked beyond their expected hours and getting gaslighted by management saying their performance is poor.
One should work and strive even harder in a hostile work environment, it is always harder to climb a hill when you want to reach the top, your generation calls for even harder working because the job market has never been so threatened before, in the past grads did not have to contend with foreigners, companies were always coming into Singapore. These days so many foreigners want to steal your jobs, companies movin out and many jobs are also being threatened by the latest threat of AI and you guys still want work life balance. SMH
I agree that working to the top is hard, but at the end of the day, who decides the promotion? It's the management. Working hard does not equate to promotion, either. Your work hours do not guarantee your promotion. I don't see why wanting work life balance is a problem, what i am seeing is the companies find it harder to exploit ppl in singapore with cheaper larbour cost hence they are leaving sg for better alternatives. have you realised things are getting expensive ? I believe this is not an issue between young and old generation mentality but rather how the companies are running. take this as a scenario : one day you collapse from over working , will your loved one be there for you or your managment/boss ? if it so happens a very unfortunate case where you are diagnosed with terminal diesease. do you think your company will provide you ? i think at most 60 days hospitalisation leave and you are replaced with a new hire. of course, you can have your opinions of youngsters but this is what i have oberseved :D cheers
Hi Mr loo, o,free with you that our generation is softer now, however the previous generation has also been very torturous n unreasonable towards their staffs, balance of power goes both ways. The previous generation has to respect their talents n our current generation z generation has to also be realistic. If the boss is unreasonable, his talents r. Not willing to work for them either
Jack Ma, Jeff Bezos, both have been speculated to squeeze their employees dry of 'work-life balance' for the profits of their businesses. In the end, it's also a matter of perspectives and objectives, not everyone wants to be a Jack Ma or Jeff Bezos, whereas there are aspiring entrepeneurs who can give everything and chiong all the way. This should not come as a surprise, not everyone aims to be the top of the management or be a leader, this goes to be the same for the army. Both sides can and should respect each other's decision, whether they want to achieve 'work-life balance' / 'work-life harmony' or not.
Totally! Our attitude & resilience are very important attributes to work and financial success. If the candidate has substandard characteristics he will not be able to achieve much even when opportunities are given to him. Anything multiple by zero is zero.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Loo. I believe it also comes down to employers' integrity when it comes to compensating their employees. If the hard work is being fairly rewarded, it would be great and these "strawberries" could be put at the bottom of the ranks. The issue is that many employees are feeling exploited by their bosses which stems in morale and integrity degradation. The top 3 employees aren't always fairly rewarded but usually adding more responsibilities and expected to continue performing 1.5, 2 or 3 person's job.
Thank you Mr Loo, this follow up video is a very good encouragement and shine light on the myth of work life balance that many companies and HR advocates, especially the Big 4. Yes, thank you again for sharing and putting yourself out there to help many of us. Ultimately we must be prepared to face the consequences of our choices, our priorities. We make our own bed, we can’t be blaming anyone else.
Why has the discussion on Strawberry Generation turned to work life balance. In our generation, we work to live, to pay for food, mortgage, support our siblings and parents, etc. We pursue part-time education while working to up our qualifications. The Strawberry Generation has all these as their parents provide for them.
It’s good that this strawberry issue is brought up. It’s very true and they need to open their minds to such issues and I empathise with Mr Loo for the uncalled verbal bombardment. I do not think it’s out of touch but a very existing concern. Foreign talents are scooping up many of our good jobs !!
Strawberry always think they are smart with work smart not work hard, they are too stupid to know that in the history of Singapore there has never been a greater threat to their jobs and nationally the economic trade is in real clear and present danger of being taken away if they continue their thinking. Good thing I belong to the work hard generation and achieve multiple properties both in Singapore and overseas to protect myself and my future generations. The RTS would see huge numbers strawberries losing jobs and opportunities, they will only wake up when massive unemployment of lazy Singaporeans lose their jobs and no, we do not have a Trump to fight for you! Bye
Mr Loo, ur father will also see u as strawberry generation, similarly ur grandfather will see ur father as strawberry generation....this is becoz later generation will enjoy better quality of life compared to previous generation n r 'softer'.....
Sorry but the way I see it the later and future generation have a tougher time ahead then previous generation, in the past they never had to compete with foreigners, jobs and security were a given, these days even the economic survival of singapore is being threatened and yet people expect easier times. In the past there was no Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia all threatening Singapore's position, the earlier young people are wise enough to see this the harder they have to work and get ahead rather than slacking. They like to talk about working smarter? Sorry but AI will also be threatening your jobs with smart technology, leaving you hungry. Luckily my previous generations studies hard and worked hard to achieve what we have achieved today, no slacking off, I am also working hard to build the foundation for my future generations, never expected entitlement even when I have a generous inheritance I see having a good foundation as an advantage to build for the next generation and not an entitlement to work life balance, of which I have none, I don't have WFH or FWA, I dont even work a five day week job. Work hard, work hard, the hill is getting steeper and the road is tougher every generation and yet strawberries believe they are entitled to quality of life.
It's like sending snail mail vs email. Which method is better? It depends. I can present arguments for both sides, and they will not be conclusive. What do you value most? Do not compromise if you feel depressed without these values.
Depending which country you are working eg I work in Australia and at 5 pm sharp my boss will chase me out of the office to go home and there wont not be any overtime and work is a continue process and there is always tomorrow and there is no work on Sat if you work in office and work is usually not as stressful as in Spore so I think this is so call work / life hour balance , once you are not stress out you will also bring happiness back to your family and the effect goes on to other area
Those who worked in sg will know how stressful it can be. Even foreigners who came here also agree on that. Imagine receiving teams messages late in the night like 10pm, and these things are not urgent and administrative by nature. There is nothing much you can do over the night, and operations will also only start in the day. I believed many had encountered this for the past few years, some may be numbed, but most are still annoyed, and indirectly adding stress.
Mr Loo, first of all I thank you for featuring my comment. Perhaps I wasn't clear with what I said earlier. When I said that you were already at the top of the corporate ladder, I meant when you were at the peak of your corporate life back then, and how you see work. Of course you started from the bottom like everyone else, and I also said for those who weren't interested in climbing the ladder like you. You will be surprised that many grinding below just see it as a job not a career. It is a means to an end and not an all out chiong. They would then understand that by just being contented with the job and salary, they also would not be the next in line for promotion. It's a balancing they are doing. If anyone is thinking that they can get a high pay and dont have to sacrifice their time with family, it's just ignorance. How much is enough to support the family will drive proportionately how much time and effort they will put into the job.
This generation could be going through many unpredicted circumstances. The world now is like lost, confused and deceptions. Live by faith and not by sight. Seeking the word of God the cross as my comforter, refuge, strength and peace. Great is thy faithfulness. Amen!❤❤❤🌈🙏
Technically my dad with secondary school education work a decade n able to own a 5 room which is now worth 700k which he bought for 200k with a salary for 2k. Can ppl now do that? With 2k? They can't even do that with 5k! N tbh how many are actually earn 5k? Just becoz stats say 5k doesn't mean everyone is making 5k. Delusional
My friend is a HR manager and she is so tired to manage strawberries. Demanding high salaries and have bad attitude. The company has come to a point to try not employing strawberries as they have wasted alot of time and resources to train these strawberries. Mr Loo, do not get upset over the comments, lead your life well. And i enjoy learning from you. Hope i have rhe chance to meet you in person one day.
16:08 You lifted a quote from Jeff bezos about work life harmony to achieve great success at work and home but apparently he din do well in his personal life lol..
I think some main determinants of happiness at work for me will be: - meaningfulness of the work - autonomy - upward mobility I suspect this is the same even for the strawberry generation just that they don't normally articulate it in this way. May be a good way to engage the strawberry generation in discussing about these areas when hiring.
Just to share that upward mobility is dependent on the ability and experience of a person. I’ve seen ppl who aren’t promoted via the seasonal promotion. They resigned to force the company to get promoted off circle. In the long run, the result is they cannot perform, becos they didn’t practice enough to have the skills and knowledge to do the job. They get demoralized with not being able to perform and being outcast. Outcast from colleagues and their own staff, becos they cannot lead, they are so afraid their staff will over take them cos they are doing better. The fear consumes them and they start to do weird actions. These are very real but not everyone understand this, nor can they accept. Like a game, we need to get to practice enough to pass the level to level up and get promoted. Our education system has already taught this. However in education parents and tutors are there. In a career the tutors are mentors who help you grow. It’s important to find good mentors.
I agree with Mr Loo on finding a job that you love to do.. Honestly i do hate the job that i am doing now but because of my small HDB BTO mortgage, i have to suffer 2 years to completely pay it off. After which i will want to quit my corporate job and move abroad to seek opportunity to run my own business. Owning a business, i know the amount of effort put in (plus abit of luck )= amount of reward you recieved. It is not like the corporate ladder where people accept work life balance and earn a stagnant wage (depending on the industry). Owning a business, it has its different challenges and risk but because i am building the company with my own hands. I will have to be more responsible for it growth, hence there will surely not be work life balance.. I agree with Mr Loo on Work life Harmony and in my own terms, I have been calling it work life integration. It's all about doing what you love and what makes you happy at the end of the day.
Mr Loo, I agree with you. I eventually D my ex spouse even tho he is very successful at his work. He brought his work stress home every day and we became so fearful of him. He may have the $ but I totally couldn’t align with him anymore as he made me feel so belittled n such a burden to him (even tho i also work to support my fam)
I've worked with both Americans, especially the New Yorkers, and PRC Chinese. Our Singaporeans' work attitude simply cannot match the Americans and Chinese. And then, Singaporeans get so worked up when called strawberries. They forgot Singapore has no natural resources and work attitude is all we got to develop Singapore.
It's scientific knowledge that work "life" balance is needed in the sense that life must be defined as a healthy lifestyle with exercise timing...Mr loo you yourself suffered from health issues before , don't you think it's because of you being too over worked in the past? Just sharing my perspective
Generally this is a positive change. Think about this, our world today is improving over the decades because of the young people of the past. I do no think the young people of today will do anything differently. Our role is to guide them in the workplace and in society just as past generations guided us back in the days. We were also considered soft by past war experienced generation. Believe in the young people that they will shape a better future for the next generation just like us and the generations before us. S&P 500 constantly hitting new highs is the result of this.
You don't have to love your job from Day 1. It is POSSIBLE to learn to love the job that you have. I'm not talking about the job that you absolutely hate, but if it's a job that you are so-so about, it is possible to learn to love it. There is NO perfect job in this world, just as YOU are NOT perfect yourself. On the balance, if you are having more good days than bad, more nice colleagues than assholes around you, then it should be OK to keep working hard at your job. Just my 2 cents' worth.
People are unhappy about the things going around them because of inaction. Often, they just need a kick in the ass to get their life in order e.g. a health scare, divorce proposal, loss of a family member etc etc.
It is not that times have changed. It is just the cyclical nature of kingdoms, nations, societies, families & human character. The constant recycling and flux from destitute to can-get-by to new rich to affluence before becoming not-so-hungry, uncompetitive, inertia, then the rot sets in. The only difference is the compressed time frame that these states are playing out. The only certainty is human nature doesn't change.
The thing with work is it invades into your life quasi statically. Before long, you are unhealthy and fat. Exercise is put aside, eating healthy is put aside, your mind is always thinking about events associated with work, it weighs you down mentally and you do not have motivation to do other things. When young, your body can take it. But when you hit 30+, 40+, you have to let work run on cruise control and focus must be switched to own health. By 50, one must have adequate financial capability to retire and focus full time on keeping fit and eating well otherwise your last 10 years or more will be miserable.
Thank you Mr Loo for the sacrifice into building this community. I am sorry that I sound harsh over last video topic. It certainly triggered many. You are one of my most respected youtuber who is humble acknowledge viewers comments.❤ Your humility is a strength!
All companies exist to make profits. The entrepreneur is usually paid last if there are any profits leftover. The employee gets paid regardless. What is high pay? Anyone who gets paid more than me.
Mr Loo, what you have shared in this video is mentioned in the bible. Colossians 3:23-24: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Based on this biblical principle, promotions are automatic in my experience. Also my family have been well taken care of. Like you said, it is not so much work life balance but work life harmony. But this harmony is not easy for most people if not done as to the Lord.
Mr loo, I think u kinda hit the nail but it’s not straight. Sorry for the warped analogy. Hahaha….i love my job and do work. But I’m sorry, I can’t align myself with certain management styles. I want those bosses who get out of my way. Unfortunately, most I met just like to wayang and focus on things which are not that important to me. It’s totally okay if they just wayang themselves. But bosses nowadays like to give instructions instead of direction. I know this is absolute becoz I’m a specialist in my field and they hire me because they need me to do the things I do. Even though I love my job, I don’t want to slave for bad mgrs and organizations because I am irreplaceable to my family but not to any company. And u would think that all these doesn’t matter, if I work hard and I will get rewarded. Let me tell you it’s not the case, more often than not. This is because to get rewarded with $ and promotion, bosses like to give to people who say what they like to hear instead of to those who do the actual work. So, giving my 150% at work, sure. Been there and done that. But do I do that for any job and any boss? I will be thinking very hard before I do that. Unless I want to do that for myself, otherwise I don’t. Because bosses don’t attribute the 150% of the success to me anyways.
This strawberry generation likes freedom and, does not likes to be order around and looks forward to work life balance. maybe contract, commission or project based pay works better for them.
Thanks Mr. Loo for your sharing. Don't have to go very far to find support for this as Mr. Piyush Gupta also recently said something similar about his take of WLB being non existence as far as he is concern. Can't help wondering if the same new generation who soley pursue this outlook in life are the same ones now pursuing a different dream like Barista , FIRE and the likes of Retire Early before 30. Don't like working , Don't like having a boss and then go on to TH-cam to give financial advise? Maybe some may still achieve their dreams???
As a GenX fresh graduate many years ago, I remember being chided by the senior (retired) generation who similarly accused me and my generation of being Strawberry and Snowflakes.
Why does it sound like love what you are working so working is not a chore. Love the people you are working for so work is not a chore. When work is not a chore you won’t be stressful
Mr. Loo - as I already told you in last video, work life balance is a myth. Now you say you agree with Jack Ma that it is impossible. Over the decades, HR Depts come up with snazzy attention getting ideas like "work life balance". Just like SG Govt went GaGa insane over "Quality Circles" during the 1980's and gradually abandoned QCC by late 1990's. Just like in 1967 Toh Chin Chye announced the "Eat more Wheat" campaign. Singapore goes through such periodic schisms. The current fad over "work life balance" myth in Singapore will end eventually. One more thing - who says you have to love your job? Get real. You work to be paid, so you can have money to settle the bills. As it says in Paul Anka's song. { Every day my papa would work. To try to make ends meet. To see that we would eat. Keep those shoes upon my feet. } Working hard does not surely beget success. In the real world, many people get short changed because of OFFICE POLITICS. This is true.
Given chance who doesn’t want to be strawberry 😂😂 Unfortunately, life is not like that. Tell the strawberry species to start a company tomorrow and employ all strawberries .. Mark my word, it will close shop in 2 months ! 😂
No la, l also must listen to my parents, not just Jack Ma. Pay us well, our passions will grow big. Very difficult to find great workers by paying them cheaply.
You are not wrong mr Loo, but just to give you a different prospective, the so called strawberry generation grew up with overwhelming availability of information. They are really probably wearing off from all these at a very young age. No one really talk about, regulate all these for them so they are probably setting up defensive wall for themselves. Maybe this is a topic that you shouldn’t touch on because you will never be able to lecture them since you are nv in their shoes. Its like trying to say you are right and your adult kids are wrong. Its never ending Im 37, so i do feel the demand of my older generation yet the overwhelming influx of information. Whatsapp is a killer. Haha Keep up your good work!
Mr Loo, there is a very interesting read from ray dalio on changing world order. after listening to ray dalio, you realise that times have not changed. it has always been like this. we think times have changed because it has just not happened in our lifetime. but when you study history, the strawberry generation have always been present depending on which economic stage the country is at.
An abusive workplace has to change, not tolerated. You went through it and didn't like it, but instead of changing for the better, you turn into the monster yourself and blame others for not being able to accept abusive and toxic behaviour.
The thought of working overtime willingly only when you are paid very high is the typical thought of "how much I get first, then I see how much to give back". Seriously, it is not about generation and their respective expectation. In any generation, the reality is that only those who are willing to sacrifice first to show their commitment, will be given more chances to advance in their career, which in the end lands them in higher paying roles. If you are not a person who is willing to sacrifice first and show your employer you are more committed than the your peers, why should your employer give you more chance of promotion and reward you better? I think this is the part that the strawberry generation get it wrong. Like what JFK challenged every American to contribute in some way to the public good -- "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." The same thing applies to your work with your employer. To get better pay, it is you who owe it to yourself, to show what you can contribute first when you are at the receiving end (a salary in this case). If you expect your employer to be willingly to pay you better, so that you can contribute a bit more, then you are delusionally self-entitled and Mr. Loo is right to be worried with our strawberry generation.
@@frjuy U can always resign and look for another job when that happens. Free market, isn't it? But do note that when this happens too often to a person, then instead of blaming the whole world, it is time to reflect if the problem lies in him/her.
Mr. Loo I see your point of view but 90% of people work at a job they don't like or think of it as just a job, it's a fact of life. Many employees are short changed and are taken advantage because employers know that these employees don't have a choice but to work at their jobs. By the way, this is also happening in western countries not just Spore or Asia. Yes in western countries, there are certain "rules" or "laws" in place either by their govt and/or their unions but there is always, always a loophole that the employers and/or managers can go around it to take advantage of employees. The world is not fair and will never be fair. With this in mind, I think FIRE is a good strategy for people all over the world to get into. If they can have financial freedom and get into a position where they have choices in their lives - 1) have enough money to live a fruitful life or 2) stay as an employee and give your best while consciously maintaining a work-life balance or work-life harmony and if work becomes a nightmare, you can hop to another job.
Mr Loo, sorry hor, you are all wrong. It is not work life harmony or work life balance. It is all about having a purpose in life. If one has a deep purpose in life, then work, no matter how boring or tiring, has a meaning. If one don't have a purpose or higher purpose in their life, if all they think is money, money and more money, then life is useless to work hard. Work hard for what? Nothing. Why work so hard, for what? Money? These people will never be happy. Life must have a purpose and higher reason to live other than just making more and more money. Money, no matter how much, can never satisfy a person. He will always in need of more and more. No matter what age we are living in, only two things exist in this world. Light and darkness. A life without light, is all darkness. The person will always be unhappy no matter how many millions he make. Just because there is no light in his life. He will try to use all kinds of stimulants to forget his inner darkness. But at the end, he will still be unhappy. Look at putin. He has so much, yet still not satisfied. All because what he has inside him is darkness. People in our time, don’t know what I am talking about. Light and darkness is your real bosses. They creep inside you to motivate you to do good, or instigate you to do bad. They really really exist. Only that our human eyes cannot see them. If one has a deep purpose for living, then, even if they do very simple work, that work has meaning to them. Once, a TV crew went out to Orchard Road and interviewed people on the streets. They asked people, what is the purpose of your life? Many could not give a proper answer. Win 1 million Toto, become very rich, I dunno, these were the most common answers people gave. Beyond the material life, people dunno what they are living for. So work so hard for what? Nothing. No purpose. Mr Loo, what is the purpose of your life? Let me ask you this question. I like to see how you answer in your next video. Purpose in life is something local Singaporeans don't ponder over. Even more so is the higher purpose of life. For one to find meaning in work, they must have a higher purpose in life that is beyond economic reasons. Only then, they'll do their best at work, no matter how hard. It is not just about doing something they like. It is about finding meaning in what we are doing. Work for me, is a chance to cultivate myself as a person. Self cultivation such as honesty, integrity, earnesty, love for what task one is doing, etc. There will always be moments where I find myself having to choose right from wrong. To work from my heart or to work from my mind? To work from my heart is to work with passion, with a sense of purpose, so that even if it is washing a cup has meaning in it. But if one only work from the mind, then everything is so difficult. Because they can’t find any meaning in doing so. The mind has very little light. Inside the heart, there is more light. So the question is, are you in touch with your heart or not? Singapore education, unfortunately, is over emphasizing the development of the mind more than cultivating the heart. This is why the younger generation is the way they are. Because their mind has very little light. They maybe smart, but they have very little light and they are not in touch with their heart, and so, they cannot feel for others or for the extra things they need to do. They cannot feel anything. They only know how to think, what can I benefit out of washing a cup? Nothing. So why should I do this job? We are living in a time where mind is more imporatnt than heart. In the older generation when the mind was less developed, the heart had the chance to grow, to expand. People in those times, lived in the heart. They lived with their heart and feelings. As a result, they were more willing to sacrifice. They lived with a purpose, a higher purpose beyond economic reasons. If we continue not to value light like we are doing now, darkness will one day eat up Singapore by the mind and we will fall, we will be finished. Game over. I am talking not just about work, but something more. Light and darkness are not imaginery concepts, they are real. More real than all the things we can see with our eyes. They are the inner forces that govern our behavior. The current world, right now, is a very dark place. Darkness is reigning supremacy in our world because people dunno what is light and darkness. People dunno how to invoke light to illumine darkness. Only a small handy of people, like me, are trying to invoke more light in the world. It will take another 50 - 100 years before people know what I am talking about. Just like it took people a few years to understand what you were trying to tell people about CPF.
Well said. We have to fight against dark forces inflicting the world, principality of the air, high places. Our eyes are the lights to your heart 🥰. It is the heart that governed our whole body, not the mind. When knowledge increases at the speed of your fingers tip then we should be aware why there are mental problems. Thank you. God bless!
@@bessieling3719 , Our eyes are the windows for light to shine into our heart. Our eyes are the windows of our soul. The soul is the deity within. The heart is the shrine. The body is the temple. The mind is the intellectual tool. The mind without the guidence of the soul and heart, is a dangerous weapon in our world.
Super agree and well said - Mr Loo, what is the purpose of your life? Let me ask you this question. I like to see how you answer in your next video. Purpose in life is something local Singaporeans don't ponder over. Even more so is the higher purpose of life.
lol i think your previous video is 100% correct. i also like work like balance. i want to be strawberry gen... but if all work go to FT, i no job, no money, life balance is a dream.
Just sharing: 1) Hebrews 12.11 - no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but pain. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 2) ephesian 6.7-9 - serve heartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people. - because you know the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free. - masters, treats your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their master and yours in heaven, and there is no favouritism with them. Collossian 3-21 - fathers, do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged. Thank you.
I am an employer in the STEM field. I always told 1 employee to upgrade himself go for masters degree but somehow he has the idea it's all worthless paper chase which is contrary to my opinion as industry evolves over time & after getting a B.Eng 20 years ago maybe it's time to upgrade. Then he becomes unhappy when his annual increment is only 3 to 4 % I think he's Gen X with s/berry mindset
worklife harmony can be achieved if u are higher up the maslow hierarchy. Not achievable when u are the lower rung. So what u propose may not be accessible for a considerble chunk of the workforce . Do u know are people at the lower levels of Maslow?
I heard of parents tellg their kids who just enter into their first jobs no need to slog so hard for their emplpyers, becos their employers most likely will not appreciate or reward them fairly. With many horror stories of managers not recognising their subordinates fairly and objectively, not a surprise younger generation of employees are wary of gg the extra mile for their employers.
Title should add Job attitude consultative session. So that others would share the video to their children coz yr viewers likely. Above 40-65. Rating : would give above avg coz u cited jack ma and Amazon (Master level needs references). Preparation of responds to questions rated Good.
The channel belongs to him, either you leave respectfully or watch as required... Loo don't serve us... 😂 😂 I agree that's no such thing as work life balance because the only inconsistent element in the equation is us, human😂😂 especially in a take for granted generation with options provision in abundance... Not applicable for all tho... The world don't revolve in you, justice and satisfaction is build within ourselves not by demanding from others...
I particularly noted the word "triggered" mentioned numerous times and ask myself why? Why does it trigger Gens Y & Z so much? I also noticed the tone of their comments which bordered on rude if not ill-mannered. Why so ungentlemanly or ladylike? Based on my observation and it might just be me, I notice that these later Gens grew up with the mobile phone in hand and the thing that sucks up their life are on-line games. Their character is very intense and many things in life are viewed with extreme pleasure or extreme pain lenses. I also note that the wokism narrative has also permeated well into the psyche so much so that a part of HR (human resources) in MNCs now have positions called "Employee Experience" (EX) Manager or Lead who determine what matters in the workplace. Yes, times have changed and so have human character.
When I saw your other video I knew you'd get cap for it 😂 but a lot of what you described as the "strawberrt generation" is already embedded in work culture in the West. I worked in the US for 20 years and now I'm at a multinational with an office in SG. It is a given that employees have a right to leave work at work. Of course there are exceptions, the culture can be different depending on the leadership. However I can say in all my 20-odd years of working, the only expectation was that I get the job done.
The world has changed but the fundamentals remain. Just as late Steve Jobs said "Stay Hungry and Stay Foolish", if you want personal growth and success, you need to fight for it. Personally i find the new generation expect things are given and not earned. At least that's how I manage my way to my million dollars goal
Mr loo please don’t do another video on this topic again else I worry your viewship and subscribers will drop dramatically like the market share. Don’t let your past effort go into the drain. Shoot more financial video or JB food video stop this kind of video discussion again and don’t ever do it again. Thank you
Millennials, Gen Z.. Hiya don't worry, continue to enjoy your life, spend money, travel... coz very soon you will NOT be needed, as robots & AI WILL take over your "lousy" jobs... so continue to devote it all , your energy into recreations & enjoyment ya ... THAT IS WHY sometimes we need a RECESSION (economic hardships) to make these youngsters appreciate even having a job !!!
It is clear that those who reacted to your video are in denial. Many seek to live on with their denial and put themselves in more vulnerable situations when they can't live up to the harsh reality of life.
Mr Loo, I hardly comment anything in the social media. If my words found somewhat disrepectful, please forgive me. IMO, the so-called work-life-balance or work-life-harmony does not exist. Both are just corporate BS. The main issue is who decides the so-called balance or harmony? Employer or employee? For example, if employer says 996 but employee wants 995, the employee will become unhappy with 996. An unhappy man in work is an unhappy man at home, right? So, to strike a work-life-harmony should employer to change from 996 to 995? Or employee should harmonized his/her life with 996? In the end, it is all about capitalism.
IMO, there is no confirmed definition of work life balance because companies wouldn't want employees to use the definition against them. It is then defined by individuals. IMO, work life balance = when your major work issues/critical or nearing deadlines are solved and you are comfortable to rest. In general, bosses or supervisors also have to be mindful not to keep on disturbing people on weekends unless it is critical. It is a give and take between boss and employee, learn how to be human, appreciate life and not constantly working. If bosses want to be a workaholic, dont expect your employee to follow your work hours.
totally agreed with you, a lot of people expect to become CEO before willingly to work harder and get better pay in their job or without any track record. I used to join a company at lower pay due to change of industry, my salary was triple in 7 years with my efforts and hard work to help the company grows. in the process I also took up part time diploma and degree during night time. before complaining about getting low pay, maybe we should ask what is the value we created for the company? is anyone in our company making much higher pay than us? how and why is the questions we want to find out; after realizing most of the top earners in most companies are sales people, I switch to sales in 2002 without hesitation. imagine if you are the boss of your company and how will you value your work and contribution to the organization, if that doesn't please you, it probably doesn't please your employer too.
Whats there to discuss? At the end of the day, AI is here and bots will replace and automate alot of our jobs. Amazon is already doing it. Also, arent your channel about wealth and investing and making money? why the need for stirring so much controversy all the time?
I super agree!
Another bs. Working and owning a business is different.
@@sting6303 I was always an employee. My dad sell stuff in wet market. My dad only own a home when he was 53 years old.
Thanks and agree with your POV. At the same time, bad bosses and managers should not use the term "strawberry generation" to excuse their terrible character and behaviour towards their employees. Work harmony is a two way street.
Sorry it is not a two way street if it is a hirer's market.
@stephenang499 so hirer's market justify treating employees badly. Then can you blame the younger generation for protecting themselves?
Thank you very much for all your videos especially this one. I find it super relevant now for me. M going to share this information with my girls. ❤
We need strawberry bosses, problems solved. 😂
strawberry bosses don last long unless the top management boomer retire. otherwise stucked between top management boomer and gen z strawberry bosses will die faster
why should a youngster die for the company and work beyond the expected hours when the company can retrench employee like nobody business?
The world is never fair and if you want to fairly paid, be your own boss, then you understand what is fair pay.
Me the same. I gained and richly rewarded life experiences and wisdom. ❤
Bye
You deserve the best for your selflessness. Thank you, Mr. Loo
The most important is even we work very hard. Doesn’t mean we will success in career
totally agreed...office politics
There is no guarantee in life. Been like that since the beginning of time. But that shouldn't stop us from working hard.
Depending which country you are working eg I work in Australia and at 5 pm sharp my boss will chase me out of the office to go home and there wont not be any overtime and work is a continue process and there is always tomorrow and there is no work on Sat if you work in office and work is usually not as stressful as in Spore
so I think this is so call work / life hour balance , once you are not stress out you will also bring happiness back to your family and the effect goes on to other area
This is not the case in Canada though. Tech industry work is highly stressful with unreasonable deadline.
Mr Loo changed from 2019 to 2024 by only losing 20kg. But Tharman takes the lead by changing his race and gender. 20:01
This generation could be going through many unpredicted circumstances. The world now is like lost, confused and deceptions. Live by faith and not by sight. Seeking the word of God the cross as my comforter, refuge, strength and peace. Great is thy faithfulness. Amen!❤❤❤🌈🙏
Strawberry generation wants to get rich through work life balance in the first decade of their career
I think some main determinants of happiness at work for me will be:
- meaningfulness of the work
- autonomy
- upward mobility
I suspect this is the same even for the strawberry generation just that they don't normally articulate it in this way.
Mr Loo, I am same like you. We work from the bottom to Director level. Work attitude remained the same whether I am at junior or management level.
Exactly!
Wow, I understand the pain.
I’m so sorry u had to make this hard decision.
Everyone fall sick for all type of reasons. For sure at some time, work related illness sure to arise.
Jack Ma = 996
Then someone demanded he gave his share of 996 and he vanished into oblivion. Ironical.
The important point for me to take note is… we can’t love our job 100%. Stop chasing that.
People are unhappy about the things going around them because of inaction. Often, they just need a kick in the ass to get their life in order e.g. a health scare, divorce proposal, loss of a family member etc etc.
Thank you for this insightful sharing session. Always looking forward to watching your videos, they are educational, informative and inspiring! 👍
Thank you, Mr Loo for sharing 😊
Thank you Mr Loo for the sacrifice into building this community. I am sorry that I sound harsh over last video topic. It certainly triggered many. You are one of my most respected youtuber who is humble acknowledge viewers comments.❤ Your humility is a strength!
Thank you for your support! I am here to share knowledge and to help others.
All companies exist to make profits. The entrepreneur is usually paid last if there are any profits leftover. The employee gets paid regardless. What is high pay? Anyone who gets paid more than me.
I enjoyed this content ❤
Just like our ARMY training, every generation it is getting easier
Mr Loo, what you have shared in this video is mentioned in the bible.
Colossians 3:23-24:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."
Based on this biblical principle, promotions are automatic in my experience.
I agree with you. We all need to be more mindful of how we treat our staff.
Work life balance means work minimally but paid astronomically.
Define, how minimal and how astronomically ... cuz Elon Musk slog his ass off to get to where he is today and is still slogging on.
you had done well... God bless you
Why does it sound like love what you are working so working is not a chore. Love the people you are working for so work is not a chore. When work is not a chore you won’t be stressful
Mr. Loo - as I already told you in last video, work life balance is a myth. Now you say you agree with Jack Ma that it is impossible. Over the decades, HR Depts come up with snazzy attention getting ideas like "work life balance". Just like SG Govt went GaGa insane over "Quality Circles" during the 1980's and gradually abandoned QCC by late 1990's. Just like in 1967 Toh Chin Chye announced the "Eat more Wheat" campaign. Singapore goes through such periodic schisms. The current fad over "work life balance" myth in Singapore will end eventually. One more thing - who says you have to love your job? Get real. You work to be paid, so you can have money to settle the bills. As it says in Paul Anka's song. { Every day my papa would work. To try to make ends meet. To see that we would eat. Keep those shoes upon my feet. }
Working hard does not surely beget success. In the real world, many people get short changed because of OFFICE POLITICS. This is true.
Given chance who doesn’t want to be strawberry 😂😂
Unfortunately, life is not like that.
Tell the strawberry species to start a company tomorrow and employ all strawberries ..
Mark my word, it will close shop in 2 months ! 😂
me.
Its never ending
Im 37, so i do feel the demand of my older generation yet the overwhelming influx of information. Whatsapp is a killer. Haha
Keep up your good work!
Mr Loo, don't matter of strawberry gen as long as eat well sleep well tomorrow still a better days . Health come 1st.
Mr Loo, those easily trigger by this topic are strawberry generation themselves
Loo is right to be worried with our strawberry generation.
yes, provided the employers arent malicious and trying to exploit their employees, treating them like cheap commodities
@@frjuy U can always resign and look for another job when that happens. Free market, isn't it? But do note that when this happens too often to a person, then instead of blaming the whole world, it is time to reflect if the problem lies in him/her.
@@dyong28 looks like you haven't kena cheated before... See what happens when you got cheated after months of promises or even years
Thank u very much for your interesting insight!
Words of Wisdom from Mr Loo
I don’t do business in Singapore , overseas alot more money to be made with cheaper staffs and management team .
A balance in between would be nice. I think we are too wired n the lines have become greyed, we need to hv a mental break sometimes.
lol i think your previous video is 100% correct. i also like work like balance. i want to be strawberry gen... but if all work go to FT, i no job, no money, life balance is a dream.
Just sharing:
1) Hebrews 12.11 - no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but pain. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
2) ephesian 6.7-9
- serve heartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.
Thank you.
This master Leong always anyhow talk one.
I am an employer in the STEM field. I always told 1 employee to upgrade himself go for masters degree but somehow he has the idea it's all worthless paper chase which is contrary to my opinion as industry evolves over time & after getting a B.Eng 20 years ago maybe it's time to upgrade.
Then he becomes unhappy when his annual increment is only 3 to 4 %
I think he's Gen X with s/berry mindset
worklife harmony can be achieved if u are higher up the maslow hierarchy.
I have also heard similar. Quit if you don't like the job.
Title should add Job attitude consultative session. So that others would share the video to their children coz yr viewers likely. Above 40-65.
Rating : would give above avg coz u cited jack ma and Amazon
(Master level needs references).
Preparation of responds to questions rated Good.
The channel belongs to him, either you leave respectfully or watch as required... Loo don't serve us... 😂 😂
I agree that's no such thing as work life balance because the only inconsistent element in the equation is us, human😂😂 especially in a take for granted generation with options provision in abundance... Not applicable for all tho...
The world don't revolve in you, justice and satisfaction is build within ourselves not by demanding from others...
if aggitated easily, dont watch... haaa...wat a great reverse psychology method to inspire lagi watch ! lol
Mr Loo you look great now 👍👍
This video goes to show how narrow minded he is.
Naturally, you will attract a lot of comments as people hold different work values. One should try to finish their job. Too much no good
Besides loving the job u do, stop chasing promotion. If u do well in the job u loved, promotion will come to u as well
I particularly noted the word "triggered" mentioned numerous times and ask myself why?
With platforms , part-time or hourly rated workers, what you expect. How they were paid and treated? You are very different la.
Since u give 150% f for 1M65
Can u donate all the fees from TH-cam...... Then i200% respect u. Don't take a cents please
The world has changed but the fundamentals remain. Just as late Steve Jobs said "Stay Hungry and Stay Foolish", if you want personal growth and success, you need to fight for it. Personally i find the new generation expect things are given and not earned. At least that's how I manage my way to my million dollars goal
when youre doing your passsion theres not work life balance. Only for many of us doing what we not like in life do we think this way
By the way, jack ma is some of the worst people you can get advice from.
SB gen aka take things4granted gen aka expect instant gratification gen ?
Mr Loo good afternoon 👋👍
Good afternoon Mr Loo
Thks Mr Loo. Totally agree with you. Thks thks
Current younger generation can't take criticisms and they quit easily. They also can't take hardship, putting self before work.
Well spoken, I like your sharing.
Nowsaday people want money drop from sky ...
totally agreed with you, a lot of people expect to become CEO before willingly to work harder and get better pay in their job or without any track record.
❤
