This song has always had a "haunting" quality to it when done in this style. Something about the harmony just sends chills all over me. One of my all-time favorite songs with a very long history. This group actually introduced the song to the recording industry and then The Inspirations and The Oak Ridge Boys took it and ran with it and made it a huge hit. Jesus IS coming soon....are you ready?

Shame a Traitor group like the oak ridge boys that started out southern gospel then turned their back for the love of money had the first number 1 hit with it Id much rather seen these people have the first number 1 hit because they remained faithful to their calling the oakridge boys didnt

They were the very first to record and introduce this song. Even before the Oak Ridge Boys or the Inspirations.

Great take on this song! I think I've heard another version elsewhere... I thought I might have sung it at church myself but I think I'm remembering a different song. One of the better recordings that I've heard in the country gospel genre.

I have a copy of this by the Oak Ridge Boys and I like it. This original, though, haunts me--I can never get enough of it.

THIS IS GREAT! love the arrangement. In my opinion, Mark V made a mistake by not releasing it first.

Completely agree. This is about as close to perfect as a gospel song can get.

Not sure if this is the actual original recording of this song, but if not, it's the one that started everyone else recording it. I hae been told, thyat The Sheltons and The Inspirations recorded this song, the same day in the same studio, but The Sheltons recorded it earlier in the day. Mark V in Greenville, SC, is where this was done and it was on the Halo (sp) label.

Going on memory, George Shelton is definitely responsible for the popular arrangement of this version based on something older. I recall reading that The Inspirations heard it, liked it, recorded it and that it was suspected that somebody purposely delayed The Sheltons release, much to their chagrin, so that The Inspirations version would be released first. Perhaps someone will come around and clarify because it's been a long time since I'd read that.

@@ThriftStoreVinyl Thanks for posting and the info. Other versions (for the most part), did sort-of a swinging tempo, whereas this one and The Inspirations did it more at a tictoc (as in a clock or pendulum/metronome rhythm. I also like the somewhat haunting harmony towards the end of the chorus.
