    Great video of Margate and the guy who did the commentary has a great voice.
    It was good to see the house I was born in, February 1952 to be exact, no 5 Market Place, above what is now the Cupcake Cafe, now converted into three flats. Some of the happiest years of my life were spent there.
    Of course then it was an extremely vibrant seaside resort, it's easy for some to berate the Town, but I will always remember it as it was in the 50's and 60's. When it was standing room only on the beach.

      Thank you Peter, that's very kind of you, although to hear my south-east London tones describe like that does make me blush a little.
      Margate has had a difficult few decades the 50's & 60's, but I think it's slowly turning a corner since its low days. It's always a pleasure to visit, and the beaches are still amazing - I bet they're still really crowded in the height of summer we keep our visits to just out of season.
      Stay safe, stay well - Gary

    My dad was from Margate, and as kids in the '70's we'd go to Margate to stay with Granny. It remains my favourite British seaside resort.

    A very lovely spin on Margate as I remember it as a child in the 70s. 2022 it has changed. The sandy seafront is still popular, the beaches surrounding Margate still lovely to visit but the town itself is not the same unfortunately. I loved the original Dreamland rides but again it is not the same Dreamland now. Excellent video, very pretty filming!

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lucieni, thanks so much, reminds me I need to use the drone more - it's a great tool for getting a different perspective on the world.
      I don't mind the new Margate - Like you, I have memories from my childhood, and then I remember the years it went through hell - the years without Dreamland. The boarded-up shops, pubs with iron grills on the windows, brawls on the street. Not the nicest place to live or visit
      So I'll take the new Margate, it seems to have a lot more people who care about the place.

      Fantastic, that's what I love about Margate, it is a touch nostalgic, I mean, the beach hasn't changed much, Dreamland is still there (but I also remember it as Benbon Brothers) and you can still find jellied eels (although why? - anyway) I'm glad you liked the video. Stay safe, stay well and take care 😍

      First time i went to Margate is when was 3 in 1985 when Dreamland was at it's most best ever with all the rides, arcades, stalls, things to play on and areas to sit and eat in. I know Dreamland is like or almost like that now but i prefer it the way it was when i was 3 because i think it was more better then and also i miss the joke shop being where Arlington house tower block is and all the Souvenir shops being on the same side as all the arcades along opposite the seafront and main beach. I know nothing stays the same forever but i still go down there once every year anyway.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember Dreamland from about 1975, I must have been 7 or 8, and it was magical. I think from the mid-Late '90's it took a downturn, but we've been heading back fro the last 3-4 years, and it's got a really different feel to it. We'll head back when it's safe to do so, we've a list of places we want to revisit. Here's to the return of happy days - Gary

    Thanks for this, Nice to see the old hometown, nice video.
    My mother fled London to escape German bombs. So I grew up in Margate in the 1950s.
    Dirt poor, we packed up and came to the U.S. Sorry to say that now.
    As Wolfe wrote "You Can't go home again" ..but you can still miss it. (I wrote that)

      @OurWorldForYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keith, thanks so much. Glad you liked the video, and I'm glad it reminded you of times past. A lot of things have changed, but many things will have remained the same. It's been through some tough times in the past, but it has certainly turned a corner, and let's hope for a brighter future.
      However, it's your story that interests me. Which part of London did your mother come from? I'm (Gary) was born just outside Woolwich, and Janis is Greenwich, so we're still both Londoners at heart. Next question, where did the story take you next? Which part of the US are you in? I love history, and stories, and those things that link us around the world.
      Anyhow, stay safe, stay well and let's hope for a brighter future. Take care, Gary

      Hi, mixed feeling about the Turner Contemporary - it looks a lot better than some of the post-war monstrosities thrown up after the war, but understand it's not to everyone's taste, but hey-ho.
      As someone who's been coming to Margate on and off since the '70s when I was a kid, I'm liking the direction it's taking - last visit was in May, and a cheeky visit to Olby's 😋
      Anyway, thanks for stopping by,

    We went to Margate for a long weekend in 2015. I think we choose the wrong weekend to visit as there was a huge reggae/ska festival on the beach - so we couldn't walk on it. Hundreds of people twerking in couples-almost pornographic, i'm no prude, but I felt for any family with children visiting. Thankful we were staying in Cliftonville, which houses the rather flamboyant and characterful Walpole Bay Hotel, step back in time for a wonderful stay. I'd like to go back again as it looks like Margate is having a turnabout in its fortunes- making sure to find out when the music festivals are being held so I can avoid them and staying at the Walpole.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly Elizabeth, have you been catching the ITV show 'The Larkins' - last weeks show entitled 'In Which Pop and Ma Go on Holiday' features the Walpole Bay Hotel, and then a lot of Broadstairs for the actual beach scenes.
      I think you were unfortunate for your timing for Margate, although it's golden sands are very popular - like the Larkins you could try Broadstairs, Ramsgate has a golden beach & even Folkestone's Sunny Sands beach is good. If you don't mind pebbles, then there's Deal & Hythe. I think Kent's coastal towns are fabulous because each one is different.
      Anyway, I hope you do pop back, and have a better time.
      Take care, stay safe & happy travels 😍

    Nice to see Margate's improved so much. I lived in Broadstairs in the 1990s and worked in Margate, which was considered the arse end of Thanet then. I visited in 2009, and was shocked at its decline. Dreamland was just an empty wasteland, and all the pubs, the ice cream parlours, and most of the shops were boarded up. About the only shop I remembered from my youth that was still open, was the joke shop! If I'd had my wits about me I'd bought a house there, as it must have been dirt cheap then. Not anymore!

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David, you're not wrong, it went through some horrible times - I remember when one of the pubs had a wire mess over its windows - very attractive on the seafront. Much better now, but I'm sure there's a selection of the community that feel disenfranchised, and that the area is overly gentrified - it's not, but it's very different since the arrival of the Turner centre.

    Hi Gary, So you like stories eh?
    Well, after 60 years of living in this madhouse called America I could write a book.
    I won’t do that though, I’ll just give you some teasers. Like..Living first in Seattle where it rains more than in England. Or, being drafted into the army during the Vietnam war. That’s the time I almost did go back home, I still had my British passport, and had sold my beloved Triumph TR3.
    Had I known of the catastrophe that awaited us..oh my! And yes, resident aliens had to serve.
    But then, later- met a girl- raised a family- lost the girl (wife) to cancer.
    Was lured to California with the hope of a better job and a warmer climate. Oh, California.
    So there’s a song I know..goes like.
    Love can make you happy
    And love can rob you blind
    Here in California
    The fruit hangs heavy on the vine
    There’s no gold, I thought I’d warn ya
    And the hills turn brown in the summertime
    Btw Mother was born in Soho to Irish parents, dad was a Scot.
    So you may understand why I’m half crazy.
    Be well, keep on traveling

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that's an adventure - so far. I wouldn't say you're mad - but you sold the TR3! c'mon. A strange thing is in a future video, on a road trip I call out a TR6. I actually have a Triumph Spitfire in need of restoration in a garage - not sure that'll get done. Still drive a convertible though, have done for the last 20 or so years, in a country that doesn't get the sun of California. We've been that side of the US twice - once in 2002, and again in 2006 once north via Nappa, back to Tahoe, Yosemite, Death Valley & Vegas - the other south along Highway One in a Hummer H2 - interesting experience. We've always enjoyed the US, and the real people we met - The politics, well as mad as out own.
      Sorry to hear about the wife, life is so desperately cruel at times, but the sun keeps coming up, it stops for no one, so we keep on going and hopefully today turns out to be a good day.
      Soho, so that's really central, proper London. It's really eclectic, guess it has been for ages to bring in the Scots & Irish.
      Lovely to hear from you Keith - keep well, stay safe, and don't worry about the madness, all the best are (Oh apart from one we don't mention 😉)

    Margate is magical. I was there on Spring '11 working at an office that was just in front of the sea. The sunny days were really enjoyable, I could feel the peace by contemplating the blue sky, the calmed sea reflecting the sunshine. This was 10 years ago, and I'm remembering it on these days.

      🤣 not a fan of Margate's historic wooden roller coaster. It's changed over the years, but golden beach remains the same.

    I went there on holiday with my girlfriend in 1983, I was 18 and she was 17, and for reasons I’ll never know she decided to lay out topless on the beach, don’t remember much else about our holiday in Margate apart from that lol.

      🤣 Adrian, that gave me a Tuesday morning smile - Oh, for those years back, (or the best bits), The sounds of Spandau Ballet, Culture Club., Level 42, Depeche Mode. The 'Wimpy' style restaurants, the arcades and that beach.
      Hope all is good now; thanks for the comment, the smile, and a touch of nostalgia. Think I may have a 80's playlist on this morning.
      Take care, and cheers 🍻

    I love Margate. When I was young we had holidays in Cliftonville every year. My dad would never allow us into Dreamland. Never did find out why. My kids loved Dreamland more than the big theme parks when they were small. Our local paper in North London used to do special offers for groups of people and I used to buy up half a dozen in the Spring and then take them and their friends throughout the summer. My daughter and I had a lovely day there a few years ago. I must go back again this year.

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we only went to Dreamland a couple of times - it might have been the cost for us, much cheaper to give the kids a bucket & spade and let them play on the beach. I know Margate has changed, but that's generally for the better, and those changes have not made it round to Cliftonville yet, but there's optimism. Let's hope 2021 is much better for the town, and we'll see ya there. Take care, stay safe, stay well.

      @OurWorldForYou  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, once we're out of lockdown, and spring has sprung, we're aiming to create a video of Herne Bay. Both our parents live in Beltinge, so no excuses really. Back to Margate, I think it's had some real low times, but it's turned a corner, and it's very different from the mid 90's that's for sure. It still has the golden sands, the jellied eels & a place to get a pint, but it's gone a bit arty in places. Still, the world keeps revolving, so change happens. Take care, stay safe and all the best for 2021 - Gary

      It could be worse at least the violent crime levels are not on par with anything you would experience in SA and you have genuine history. However as to the former I suppose that is why guarded gated communities are so popular.
