I’m glad that they decided to prosecute Joey Buttafuoco. 4 months wasn’t long enough for his part in this violent crime. I’m glad that Mary Joe moved on and was even able to forgive Amy. Joey clearly didn’t deserve a wife like that who was so devoted to him

It had to have been the grooming. At first, she thought he was fat. He probably had a decent sense of humor, so she enjoyed his company when he took her on errands. He bought her things that would have been out of reach for a teenage romance, so he became attractive to her. I totally understand it.

I lived in Baldwin and my family knew the Buttafuocos well. My car was totaled and in their shop just before all this went down. When I met my mother-in-law, she told me she taught art at the Merrick middle school Amy attended and Amy was in her class. She described Amy as, “a sweet girl with no motivation and lacking a sense of self.” The Buttofuocos were a lovely family, I didn’t know Mary Jo but I knew Joey’s brother and father, the latter died from all the aggravation from this ordeal. The Joey I knew was a very funny and caring person. He truly cared about his customers. BTW he got a relatively cushy stay when he was in jail!

Baldwin, NY!!! Woohooooo, my hometown gets mentioned by Dr. Grande.
I was a pre-teen when this happened and I vividly recall the mechanic shop having a huge "Welcome back, Joe" banner strewn on it when Joey got out of prison.
I had seen Amy in passing a year or so before this all happened. She wasn't anybody at the time, so she was just a random person walking down my block and saying "hi" occasionally as a bunch of us kids played in the front yard. That's my claim to fame in this case, haha.

      Grooming
When a sexual or other kind of predator sets the stage for abusing another, such as a child or other person (as in the case of sex and theory human trafficking).
Trust: May give toys and/or other gifts and favors to the intended victim to gain trust.
Alienation: Settings the stage for the intended victim to become alienated from their primary caregivers/circles or family and community.
Fear/dependency: Sets up a power dynamic in which the victim feels too afraid to report the abuse, perhaps by involving the victim in activities their friends and family might judge the victim negatively for, such as drug use (or even the abuse itself).

Poor Mary Jo, her life was destroyed by two self centered and manipulative people. Even though she rebuilt herself, the emotional and physical damage she had to endure was immeasurable. It’s very sad to realize that years of love, dedication, and investment in a marriage will one day end up with being shot in this brutal manner by the husband’s mistress. Mary Jo did not deserve the betrayal from Joey and the cruelty from Amy.

She was portrayed as a nasty little seductress. In those days people didn't really think about why she would be behaving in such a way. Was she damaged as a child? Was she groomed by a paedophile? No. She was just bad.
She's not completely blame free in my eyes. She was 16 not 9, but it's nowhere near as simple as she was the evil little bitch who led a grown 35 yr old man astray. She shot a woman in the head 🤷🏻‍♀️.
