    I really disagree with the tipping. You're an artist, if you want more money just ask for it! Artists don't get tips bc we state our own prices and people pay what we ask or don't buy our services. If you're pricing your art down bc you expect people to tip, that's on you, it's not common courtesy to tip artists.

    He's been tattooing 35 years, has traveled the world and won several awards.
    What we should be teaching people is to stop being such snobs that decide what terminology people can and cannot use.
    I hate the terms "tat/tatted," "ink/inked," things like that, but I don't tell people "its a tattoo, not a tat" or "they're actually called pigments, so you're not inked, you're pigmented."

      J'Von Taylor because three grand is more than enough money to pay someone they do not need a couple of hundred dollar tip on top of that too, it’s not anyone else’s problem if three grand isn’t enough money for them. Also people could have had to save up to get that tattoo and only have three grand to spare and they’re well within their rights to get that tattoo and not be expected to tip hundreds of dollars as well that’s entirely unfair.

  • @Captain_Crusty

    Disagree with tipping. You want me to pay more? Raise your price. If I like your work enough, I'll pay it happily, but it should be stated up front and not in some sort of pseudo-mandatory grey area. If you trust in your own ability, and want more money, then have the confidence to be up front with the price. That said, I usually tip anyway (at most 10%), if the conversation/'bedside manner' is good. The price is for the ink and is *your* prerogative; the tip is for the service and is based on *my* judgement.

      @trevortattooer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Often the artist has to give a large cut to the shop owner, prices may not be set by the artist. It’s out of respect to tip your artist if you feel they provided a good service, like any service. I’d say about 95% of clients leave a tip.

    • @MikuPoutQueen

      I think it depends on where you are, in the US it seems to be mandatory to tip on top of the cost of the tattoo. In the UK and most of Europe, it is not and its at your discretion and I prefer it that way. I only have 1 tattoo but I did tip because I had a very good first time experience. 20% is a lot to tip and tbh I don't think i could ever tip that much ever.
      EDIY: I would really like this channel to ask these to artists who are not based in the US because it would help viewers in other countries see their opinions and see if they have advice of their own because it seems to always be US based artists on here and its very one sided on topics particularly tipping

    • @juliar332
      @juliar332 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Matthew's Autograph Collection In the US tipping is something you do for people in the food industry because those people are paid much less than minimum wage (like half minimum wage) because they are expected to get tips and those tips are taxed as well. Tattoo artists set their own prices and make at least minimum wage so they shouldn’t expect to be tipped. It’s really rude when they say that tips are required especially something ridiculously high like 20%.

      if your happy tip... dont matter 10% to 20% or whatever. tip what you feel is comfortable... or dont tip and next time you set something up you won't be priority... no one wants to deal with someone who dont appreciate what you do. I set my prices to what I feel is acceptable for both of us. if you tip awesome I know your happy and like what you got. if you dont that's ok too I dont expect tips but when you tip that makes you a person I want to work on because we both like each other and you like what you get.

If you can’t respect artists and the work we go through to do what you want, don’t get a tattoo. Not to mention, 20-50% of that $500 tattoo isn’t ours. Remember, we PAY to work in a shop. 1. tipping is not normally expected in a tattoo shop, to most artists. artists usually set their prices, for that very reason, and most artists don't usually expect tips, LET ALONE 20%.
    2. it's contradicting to say, "it's easy money if someone brings me a tattoo design from Pinterest", but then saying that copying tattoos should be illegal.
    3. NEVER ever ever keep Saniderm on for 4-5 days, without changing it out! your tattoo needs to breathe, and if you don't let it breathe, it's not going to heal correctly. Saniderm is, essentially, plastic wrap with glue around the perimeter, to keep your tattoo from infections or scratches, etc. but you can/should take it off anywhere between 2-24 hours after the tattoo is done and wrapped. you can re-wrap it, with normal plastic wrap and tape, if you so desire, but it's not necessary, as long as it's kept moisturized, either by using the healing ointment they give you, or with other ointments, such as Aquaphor, but in small amounts. don't put too much, because your pores will get too clogged with the ointment, and it may affect your tattoo.
    please please please do your research. it is the artist's job to tell you correct after-care, and that is the one thing that really, really bothered me, because you can really mess up your tattoo by not taking proper care of it.

    So I know this artist and had known him for years and years. His work was clean, super nice and I liked his style. I am VERY OPEN minded when it comes to what tattoo artist do. I went to him picked out what I wanted. It was an original piece he made. I told him do your thing I trust you. And I actual did this on 2 diff pieces. First one was good except he used the same color purple to contrast purple.. The 2nd piece still isn't finished 2 years later.... I tipped great I paid good money for each piece. And had full trust... Now I have an undone piece that I've paid in full for. And now he lives in diff state. I'm pissed. Lol don't know where I went wrong but it's deff bullsh*t. And then I seen he did my first piece on someone else when I thought he said he wouldn't do that.

  • @IhshanSilidir
    @IhshanSilidir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm new to being a tattoo client but i think I got it now. I have to accept whatever ludicrous price that is called up, because art is invaluable, then I let my tattooer decide what i get and whats best for me, don't change anything because thats lack of trust and i have to blindly trust my tattooer, when I'm in pain, I ask if it's ok to stop now,which,of course, the tattoo "artist" decides. And when ,by the godly grace of my tattooer, the piece is done, i pay an extra 20% on my already very expensive tattoo, because everything else would be rude and its a service. Yet , if I accidentally mention the fact that the tattooer is a service provider, he or she gets offended and might kick me out, because i underestimate the free spirited, artistic value of the tattoo "artist". Now that's what i call a solid concept.

    Tipping is up to you the customer! Personally I account in for the shop fees,ink etc. So I like to give a little more for the artist. Basically the point is it's up to you the customer.
