- Wanting to make sure your tattoo is perfect and being an endless nitpicker are two completely different things. We asked our panel of artists about the pickiest clients they've ever had to tattoo. You'll hear tales of punishers who make a zillion edits to the design and indecisive folks who want the stencil placed 15 times before settling on the perfect place... in the exact same spot as the first. By the end of the video you'll be wondering how these artists haven't given it all up in frustration.

This time around we’re going to be tackling all of the tough subjects-what should a tattooer never do, what kind of tattoo is a dealbreaker to spot on a first date and more. The guy who intentionally made the design bad because the client wanted a different flower probably shouldn't be doing custom work- like just tell your client you won't change the design, but don't put intentionally bad work on someone's body. That's fucked up.
He wouldn't draw it bad once it was going to be on the body , he is my artist all of his pieces he puts so much effort and time into.

I understand the frustration artists have with "perfectionist clients," but the tattoo will be on their body for the rest of their life...patience is needed on both sides lol.
yup, that's why the tattooists keep it in, that's the only thing that matters.
I totally understand that, I have tattoos on me too and all the artist who have inked my skin understood that placement was important to me, but now that I work at a shop I see many people who just don't explain what they want, they don't try to explain it and just get really frustraded to the point where they even get a little rude, sometimes it gets a little uncomfortable cause you have to be professional and not mind and just be patient but some people are not even "picky" they're just mean lol

@@NickWavvy They're CELEBRITY artists so they're kinda big on themselves. Find a smaller shop with an artist who isn't an egomaniac on reality TV and you're gold.

None of them said they want to rush clients.
The fact is, there has to be some flexibility in your vision. Nobody can read minds. If you're completely uncompromising you'll be disappointed no matter what.
@@itsasecret2298 and no one said you shouldn't be flexible. Some complainted of menial issues (e.g. "can I have it a millimeter bigger") and time issues (15 mins for prep) which can be serious issues with their large portfolio of people they run into on a day to day, but flexibility should go both ways. They shouldn't be going beyond what they feel is comfortable in a piece and neither should the client. Sometimes I do hours of research before pieces and some I leave to the artist, but both parties have to be up for the task.
As a tattoo artist I would never judge someone for wanting to try different stencil placements or resizing a design when they’re committing to a piece of my art on their body FOREVER. Honestly I don’t know how so many artists get this ego but I feel so privileged to have people trust me in that way, and it’s the greatest compliment that someone wants to wear my art forever.
I think it’s super tacky to shit talk your clients like this. As a client, if you have anxiety about being judged like this- find a tattooer who is trauma informed. I can’t imagine already being anxious about how to act when you’re getting your first tattoo, and seeing something like this video ahead of time and panicking even more that you’re going to be too picky and be made fun of.

Tattoo artist here! In my opinion, if people are picky I’m okay with it because of course, it’s on them forever. But there is a fine line between caring about the tattoo they’re getting, and being blatantly disrespectful of the artist’s time and expertise. With that, getting as much as I can from my clients during the consult and over email prior to drawing really helps. Changing things a few times is okay, but it can get excessive to the point where we have a fee for it. That way, the client doesn’t feel bad for being picky and the artist is compensated for their time ❤️
yes, this! there’s a difference between being a little picky about the placement and moving it around a little, and then the people who keep adding things to an already finished drawing, placing things over and over and over, making them redraw it over and over again. it’s just a respect thing & in my opinion people should know where they want their tattoo that’s going to be on them for life, idk, before you’re about to start tattooing it lol. i knew what placement i wanted weeks before going in and i didn’t need much changing of the placements bc i had thought what i wanted and wear throughly before even scheduling an appointment.

The lady at 9 mins sounds like the only one who realizes the tattoo industry is based around CLIENTS. Without clients there are no tattooers. She sounded like the only one who would consciously focus on providing the client with a positive experience. I'd let her tat me for sure
Laura was pretty open ended too and seemed to not just straight bash the client side. It's super funny hearing one of them get pissed over all of it and then say they're also pretty picky...

I kinda agree but I also think there's a difference between that and the people who move it around for an hour only to end up back where they started. If you want a very specific design and a very specific placement then definitely the artist should be patient while you get it right, but if you're just there trying stuff out on the spot because you haven't made up your mind but you're also not willing to trust the artist's judgement then that's not very respectful of their time or skill.

yeah i agree with you on the ego thing, but also i see from their perspective, they may have other appointments, it may be the end of the day and they took in a last minute client not expecting them to take so long, etc. plus the materials used to constantly redraw and replace the stencil.... plus the mere fact that people should know what they want and where they want it before coming into the appointment..
They're not ORDINARY artists. They're on TV so they're more big on themselves. Most artists I've met IRL aren't like that

While I understand the frustration of these artists, they seem to forget that they work in a service industry, and the client is the one paying for the piece, and it's going to be on their body forever. Not everyone is willing to give up control to someone they may not know, for something that's permanent. At the same time, if an artist gets irritated, and doesn't want to work with a customer, they have the right to not tattoo the person.
Okay. Would you also question your electrician about the right way of repairing your electrical system?
So why would you question your experienced tattoo artist, and ignore their advices? If it's an experienced artist, they will know what's best in terms of tattoo placement, how it will heal, how it will look in 5 years.
Of course the clients can have their preferences, but they should at least listen to the artist's advice.

To be fair almost all of these people seems to be talking about clients that they did work with and tolerate and end up tattooing with something that they were happy with. It seems like they were perfectly respectful in the moment and probably do understand why people are picky, but I think it's pretty reasonable for service industry professionals to let off some steam outside of work hours complaining about people who made their job frustrating, I wouldn't take it at face value. Plus some of these stories do sound a little disrespectful of the artist's time and expertise

I'm surprised that the majority of artists are bothered by placement. For my shoulder, my artist insisted on placing it near a dozen times so it hugged my shoulder cap and sat just right. She says she wants her clients to wear the tattoo and not have the tattoo wear them. 😊
I was definitely that client for my first 2 tattoos. It just seemed like such a huge deal at the time! But i didn't like feeling this anxious about it and being so restrictive on the artists ): i learned to let go a bit, there is a healthy balance between being too picky and not caring at all.

I was too. Now I'm less picky with tattoos.
My mind couldn’t stop focusing on the fact that every time the artist would stop talking, the music would instantly get louder. And the minute they would start talking again, it would lower. Every time they would take a breath and immediately start speaking, the music volume would go up and down.

This is the first episode that's made me dislike the artists.... I'm a web designer and yes, clients can be indecisive and clueless and difficult, but without clients there's no job. And it feels good when you help them figure out what they want and deliver it.
The only time I made an artist change a tattoo over and over again was my daughter's name because I didn't like the font he kept using. I told him from the beginning I wanted it legible and very simple, no loops, nothing outrageous and he kept doing very frilly, loopy font. I kept having to tell him, "that I wanted it simpler, as if you're just writing a name." We did it 5 different times. He was annoyed with me, I was annoyed with him. I literally just wanted it as if you would write it on a piece of paper simple. I was fine with him doing cursive. I just didn't like the extra swirls that the name gets lost in. I think because I'm a woman he kept trying to do it more feminine. I'm glad I went the way I wanted.
So when you're doing whatever she wants "you're an awesome client" But the second you think about something you want, you're shunned. lol

To some extent its fair for her to turn down stuff she doesnt have any passion for especially absurd requests or something you can get basically anyone to do.

And combining 6 tattoos into one small piece is a valid reason to complain. Its not a matter of “getting what the artist wants”. Its giving real feedback from a professional artist as to composition, and unity on your body.

I already have tattoos. But, as someone with bad anxiety, these people make me anxious to get another one. Makes me feel like I couldnt change the placement if I didnt like how the stencil looked. Or that I couldnt ask them to change something in the tattoo, without them getting mad and judging me.
I don’t know if this will help, but when I went in for my first tattoo I was nervous. After seeing the stencil I realized that there weren’t any clouds specifically drawn into it but was too nervous to ask, I said something to my mom and we mentioned it. He said it was absolutely no big deal and quickly added some in. I love love love the clouds in it, it’s one of my favorite parts and I’m so thankful I was urged to ask about it. I think it’s all about working with someone you trust. I can’t speak for the artists (some seem really rude)but I feel like they’re talking more about indecisive people who repeatedly change their mind only to end up where they started or who think they know more than the trained artist.
Ik its been a year, but for my first my artist (super sweet) told me it didnt look right and asked me if she could make it bigger and I agreed. We ended up putting on the stencil like 5 times because she wanted me to love it. You just need to find someone nice to so your tattoo.
I mean i trust my artist, and they always put an amazing twist on any reference I give them, but at the same time if they are drawing something up that I don't like I'm gonna ask for them to change it because its gonna be on my body for the rest of my life. I already have one tattoo that I regret I really don't want any more
As an artist it’s your job to collaborate with clients to help them bring their ideas to life. The artists who got annoyed with the clients for sending thorough emails and communicating efficiently about permanent art on their bodies are very weird. Is that not your job?
As an artist myself who does commissions, its okay to collaborate with your client but when they keep asking things and keep wanting different things, it gets annoying because you're there sitting and remaking the design 1000 times because they didnt like how a flower was folded only to decide to not do a tattoo at all. It truly wastes your time and its mostly why a lot of tattoo artists try and avoid these people because in the end, they might dislike it or decide to not get anything at all after telling you to change a design billion times...
@@ytttttt411 That's why deposits are crucial. In the service industry people back out of large commitments all the time, it's annoying but that's human nature. Sometimes we don't know we're not ready until it's too late, I've found deposits really help so no ones time is truly wasted.
Sometimes I show up & not know exactly what I want, because I love the artists input on what they think will look best.
That being said, it’s going to be on my body, so my input matters too! Sorry if that annoys the artists, but I’m paying for permanent art on my body.
One or two inputs, I doubt the artists mind that. I worked in an ad agency as an illustrator and the amount of micro-managing the clients would engage in was insane. Some clients need to trust in the professionalism of the artists.

Saying someone is micromanaging the tattoo when they are just sending new references and requesting images of the final drawings is an excellent way to be avoided as an artist, when it comes to tattoos that are permanently on you for life a level of respect and patience on both sides is paramount
I’ve read that they don’t send the final draw ups in case you take the picture to another, cheaper artist to do.
well yeah… the client has to be patient with the artist, and trust that they are designing the mockup and will send you it upon completion/day before the tattoo.
Artists are right, its annoying having to repeatedly respond to drawing requests while having do deal with DOZENS of other designs for that one week…

As an introvert and just shy person in general, I had a hard time telling the artist to change something in my first tattoos and was like 'ok, I love it and if they place it there it's because it works'.
The last time I went to a different artist and she was the one who kept asking me if I wanted to move it because she saw I wasn't sure about the size and placement (it's obviously different seeing it in your head), kept reassuring me it was no problem at all and we tried until we both were happy. I felt so comfortable with her that I kept going back.
That's so great, an experience like that would motivate me to go back to an artist as well.
I love that she did that! That right there is real professionalism!
Some of these artists are the reason I'm scared to get my first tattoo. Not even of the tattoo itself but of the artist.
There are nice artists out there. These guys think they're hot stuff because they're on a show.

Alot of clients are actually open to changing their ideas if you give them your advice as a professional!!! I got a ladybug tattoo that I asked for to be smaller but if you believe that the tattoo will turn out better larger always say something! You never know how open a client is to changing their mind, if you think as a professional it's better for the tattoo, I promise you that as long as the client is open they want it to turn out as good as possible too!

For all the comments complaining, it’s not black and white about artists “rushing” or picky clients. There’s a grey area where yes, clients are being ridiculous so the artist has to know when they have to take their own time(which is their money) into consideration. Working with the general public, you learn how absurd people really can be
Exactly. There's nothing wrong with being particular but the overbearing, demanding attitude some people get is ridiculous.
Yeah In any job dealing with a lot of people it’s tough to deal with the wide range of personalities. I know I’d be picky if I got a tattoo since I’m a generally anxious person but at the end of the day want art on my body forever. But being upfront surely is the best situation. Like “hey I’ll probably make some adjustments to the art and have the stencil moved around to get onto the right spot. Can you work with me?” Then you won’t get involved with some people like in this video that just want to do their work with very little collaboration.
Yep. I’ve never been a tattoo artist, but I’ve had customer-facing jobs. I can 100% envision a tattoo client being indecisive or unrealistic enough that they’re going to make it the artist’s problem, and nothing will be good enough for them.
Ideally, you’ll tell your artist what you want, and they’ll listen and use their experience to guide you to how to get the optimal version of what you want. But if you don’t know what you want or refuse to acknowledge that experience with the medium of the human body is one of the things you’re paying your artist for, you might as well stay home.
I just tattooed this couple yesterday and they each time the one who wasn't getting worked on would stand over my shoulder and point at the work and tell me to do stuff with it. Eventually I told them that I would stop tattooing if they didn't sit down and stay quiet. Don't second guess your artist, they know what they're doing.
You can go on debating this forever but at the end of the day I feel like if you are a client who wants to get a tattoo, do your research and go to someone who you really appreciate the work they do and be a bit open to their ideas as an artist. You’ll come out with something you couldn’t even imagine ! Also don’t be afraid to let the artist know what you do not want to change at all.
uhm it is permanent, people want to make it perfect, have it look like they imagined. a tattoo artist rushing them is not gonna make it easier to decide. the artists have to respect that and make the client feel comfortable. yes even the E has to be perfect. they are paying you a lot of money, the least you can do is be patient and kind. (sorry for the bad English)
100% agree idk why they are so rude about it, I wouldn't want these people tattooing me either just cause I'd feel like I'm annoying them by being too picky.
I get what you're saying but the materials aren't cheap so every time they have to redraw it, reapply the stencil, is costing them money. And such a small, simple tattoo that these artists are describing isn't expensive. Not to mention you never know what an artist has booked for a day. Maybe they have 7 other clients to see and you're wasting their time. Especially if, like these artists said, the client goes with the original design and location or close to it very often. Then it really is a waste of the artists time. Waste their time with a $100 tattoo or not have to worry about all these things with their $800 appointment in an hour?
@@ejyounggun08 oh yeah I totally understand that. I think people mostly mean the designs before the materials are used. It's just an ass move to say "yeah that looks great" and then change your mind the day of.
@@ejyounggun08 great points :) but again, if it is a small, stand alone tattoo on a body without other tattoos, it is even more important to make that one look super perfect! and i would maybe talk to the client about time management and material cost beforehand. i have a lot of tattoos myself and i can´t remember every single one, but the first one is burnt into my mind. mostly because the artist rushed me really bad and fucked up the tattoo, but also because i got so stress by proxy that i had a really hard time sitting well for it. i get the money and time thing, but also, it is a service job, they provide a service and if anyone rushes, the result is not gonna be great! i think the artists in this vid would do themselves a favor by maybe saying no thank you to the small ones and fokus on the one they feel passionate about. but yes i can def see your point! :) (again sorry for the bad English, it is not my first language)

I’m cracking up at the hypocrisy of tattoo artists. They all give the advice “do your research. Know your artist. Ask to see photos of their work” and then get mad when clients do exactly that?! Come on…

Ah yes "if you don't just shut up and let me put whatever I want on your body in permanent ink, than you're a bad client". That's the quickest way to never have me as a client.
I just had my knee blasted and my artist took my very minimal detail request and turned it into something absolutely amazing. She even gave me an outstanding price for both knees to eventually be done. It pays to be flexible
bruh some of them are so egotistical like they are giving you references and wanting a certain placement wow almost like they are paying you and trust you enough to tattoo them to begin with and i know for a fact they act the same way when someone tattoos them
I like finding an artist that I like their art work a lot, and just give them a rough idea and let them take over. So far those have been my most favorite tattoos.
Just adding in my 2 cents :) 70% of my tattoos have been done by different artists, and I chose those artists because of their designs, talent, ability, and style. I have always felt like the most important part of getting a tattoo, especially if it's something that will mean a lot to you, is doing some solid research on your artist beforehand. When I initially approach an artist about a tattoo I always ask if they're interested in my idea/concept first, because even if I like their style it may not necessarily be something they're interested in. Because of this I feel like I've always clicked with my artists, because it shows that I respect them and it gives a sense of collaboration rather than a transaction.
There have been several occasions when I've been in a tattoo studio and have overheard conversations between an artist and their client where the client will absolutely not listen to what the artist had to say, and in some cases changing the artwork and design of the piece to a point where it doesn't look like the artists' style at all. I've always thought that you have to be able to fully communicate and have a proper discussion with your artist about what you want, and also be able to trust them because they're professionals and will usually know what will work artistically. That way you can both walk away excited about the piece.
Maybe it's cause I have always worked in hospitality/customer service roles but I understand that, even if you are super picky about certain aspects, there's a right way and a wrong way to approach these kinds of things, and being fussy, stubborn, and unwilling to accept ideas/creativity is definitely not the way to go.
There's one undeniable fact, in any field, the most unbearable and demanding customers are the ones who aren't even spending a lot of money.

Seeing what the possibilities are before investing in making it permanent is important to have confidence and pride in the art and artist. You’ll love the piece more knowing it’s your favorite, and knowing the artist cared to take the time to make you love it.
As someone who used to do art commissions I relate to this so hard.

This is why I thoroughly think through what I want and take the artist's opinion on look, size, and location in to make it look the best.
I have a friend whose tattoo artist is a controlling a$$&%$@. He's her friend, and one of those friends who get mad if they see you went out with family but didn't invite HIM. He tells her what tattoo she's getting, and ONLY does New School art. So she asked for Betty Boop, and instead he did an octopus. Artists can be out of line with their egos.

Yeah I've had some artists in the past that had the tendency to take an incredibly simple straight up idea and just throw in a ton of random stuff in the background. I definitely get the artistic liberty thing but at the end of the day that's gonna be on me, I want to feel some personal connection to it.

I’m not picky about the image of the tattoo, I’m picky about the content, and my artist most of all. I waited until I turned 24 to begin getting tattooed, and that was because I waited for my perfect artist to appear. I found them, and now I feel comfortable allowing them to take my ideas and concepts and turn them into tattoos. That wasn’t the first, second, or third artist I looked at. But they were worth waiting for.
I'm the opposite, just gave my artist a reference with a couple guidelines and let him do his magic, it turned out great.
I'm already cooking up ideas for the next one.

Maybe I’m an easy customer but I trust my artist and give him the freedom he needs based off what I like about references. Designs always turn out better than I picture in my head!
I understand both sides. As a client, you need to go into the shop knowing exactly what you want and how you want it placed. Tattoo artists are not mind readers. They don’t know what you want unless you tell them. That being said, if the stencil isn’t how you want it or isn’t what you showed them/described, you are paying for it, and it is going to be on your body forever, so you have every right to tell your artist to change it to your liking. To counter that as well, as a client, you should show them a good reference image to give them a clear idea. It’s shitty to change the idea last minute. If it comes down to it, just find a different artist that has a more similar style if the one you’ve booked isn’t working with you.

Like 5:30 the way I see it is like since the client already got tattooed by her, they know she is an amazing artist and probably believes that she is capable of doing a tattoo that they want, obviously if its too extreme or not possible to tattoo, the artist has to talk to them and be like you know.. maybe you need to tone it down a bit, like this and this wont look good or this and this together wont last in the future etc etc.. its all about communication
But yes there is a difference betweet being picky about the perfect placement or certain details of the tattoo and straight up being indesisive, if you arent sure what tattoo you want pls dont get one
How did all of these artists have so many thing to moan about? I appreciate being given the opportunity to do what I love and create a tattoo my clients love. So many people will say yes and go ahead with something they’re not keen on because they feel too anxious or awkward to say no. We’re in a position of power with people who often feel very vulnerable and it’s our job to make sure they feel comfortable to say what they do and don’t want. If I ever have a suggestion for them that I think will look better I tell them so many times they are free to choose what they want, I’m just doing my job and letting them know a potentially better option that they can still choose either version and do what they want. I always set aside extra time to do the stencil, if it goes on perfectly first time then happy days but I will always offer to do multiple placements, different sizes and worst case if it looked better before but they tried it on a few spots then at least they go home and know without a doubt that was the best spot for it and never have to wonder what if?

I’m sorry but I’ve had many artists rush me into Placements that I now regret. For me I was new to the tattoo world so I had no clue about nothing and that’s how I ended up literally hating my first couple tattoos. Having an Artist that is patient and understanding is so important I understand that it’s their job but u can’t rush people into having something that they might not want. Communication is key on both ends I have learned so the way some of these artists in the video talk about having to be patient or having to change things makes me really uncomfortable like they might be great artists but if that’s the way they handle their customers then it’s just fucked up tbh
i am not good in social situations and these videos help me be a better customer for a smoother experience i think. working in customer service, myself and my teammates ( and you ,most likely , at some point ) get frustrated when the customer does not respect our time , our work , our professional opinion so it's important to me to know how i can show respect to my artist. Last tjme i went i was like " im sorry , i genuinely do not know where i want to get this done . Can you please recommend a spot for me ? " and then he placed it and double checked if i like the position and it turned out beautiful. It is really important to communicate your needs as a client in a respectful way and to manage your expectations. Artists should also expect pepple to be nervous and probably scatter brained when getting a first tattoo and making sure it's perfect ,1 its painful , costly, and permanent !!!
As a Woodworker artist .I totally understand the feeling of dealing with clients that are very picky. Mostly I have clients they get very picky on how big of a project they want me to make .
I feel like most people like how the artist has the design or placement the first time but they want it to be their idea or feel like they have more control over it so they make you do a little run around first
Having been rushed into a tattoo by the artist, and left with a shit piece of work, I wouldn't recommend rushing by either party, forever is a long time to be stuck with something you don't like .
This video reminded me of why I always go in with the artwork drawn up just how I want it or pick the artist's flash. Giving the artist the idea without seeing the drawing until the appointment is shitty for both parties.
this really stresses me 😅 cuz i AM the picky client but i fully understand their frustration. i'm a super anxious person and i've dealt with eating disorders and body image issues my whole life, so although i love tattoos i also need to make sure that it's something that i really won't regret and that won't further screw my perception of myseld
Oof I'm pretty sure I'm a picky client. I'm an artist and usually have my own vision for my tattoos (but not a tattoo artist yet haha). Some people also have bad anxiety which explains those clients who make you move the tattoo a million times. It's a collaborative process and I think both parties should be flexible and understanding of one another.
I feel like some artists let their egos get to them when they get fame but never forget your roots 🙃😂 esp when it's something that's going to be on their body forever. I get if someone is being SUPER unreasonable or SUPER picky but some of these weren't even that bad (esp the clients who stressed about placement because sometimes that's been me with my horrible anxiety lol) If it's such a pain to redraw a stencil for some of these artists maybe invest in a stencil printer? As most modern tattoo shops have one now a days... Not necessarily a client's fault that your shop is cheaping out and makes you hand trace everything. 😂
when i paint i sometimes work for hours on little details, changing things until i am happy with the result. id love to be able to tattoo myself so im not considered a picky client.

As an aspiring artist myself I totally understand when clients want something that just doesn’t work for that placement , completely copying another artist or something really hateful etc. but it’s their body they want it on, you can give them suggestions but if that’s what they want to do you can’t just be a dick about it. I I’m never going to just intentionally ruin someone’s tattoo just because they’re being a perfectionist. It’s going on their body for the rest of their life, ofc I want it to be something they won’t regret. If you don’t want to do the tattoo, just tell them no and maybe suggest another artist that could do it for them
bottom line it's your tattoo so u gotta make sure u know what u want and the artist is clear in understanding u. BUT, I've found in general as long as that's established, the more freedom and trust you give to the artist, where ur giving value to their own expertise and judgment, the better the tattoo turns out
I bet some of those clients who had things redone a bunch of times before choosing the original either needed to see a bunch of options to be sure that what they picked was the best one (for example I really wanted a rectangle tattooed on the front of my arm, above my elbow and my tattooist said that it’d look incredibly warped, and I knew she was right, but I didn’t want to have any what ifs in my mind. So we did a bunch of stencils before settling on the current position, and I know it must have been frustrating for her, but it gave me peace of mind. My tattoo isn’t perfectly rectangular, but after trying so many stencils, it helped me to realize that where I have it know is as straight as it was going to get, so then I didn’t hold that against her and it doesn’t bug me, because what else could we do? Nothing.) or they just got frustrated explaining it to the tattooist again and again and just gave up and chose the closest to what they wanted.
Speaking on placement. I went to this guy once and what I was getting I thought would look best on the left side of the knee and he thought the right side would be better. I stood my ground and to this day I regret it. Give your basic ideas of what you want and let the artist do what they do! That's how you get the best results.

I’ve got 3 tattoos, I’ve let the artist pick the spots every time because they know best where to place it-even though the latest one is my full sleeve and some of the placements don’t make sense to me I’m trusting him and trusting that he has a plan that I can’t see. I’m extremely picky and fussy, but I won’t send my artist a design until I’ve been picky with it myself and found the exact thing I like, so they don’t actually know how fussy I am. For my sleeve I sent through lots of reference pictures and I was nervous because it was a lot but I got there and my artist was like I love that you sent through so many references, it was very helpful. And the one time I’ve questioned my artists design I was so nervous that I was being rude by questioning him but he was fine with it
I have my next tattoo appointment on Tuesday!!! Then the following Monday! I am so stoked, I have been waiting months to start working on finishing my sleeve
having an artist that is rushing, pressuring you and can’t have an understanding that their ‘canvas’ is YOUR body and you’re having their work permanently inked into you forever makes you not wanna get tattooed.
I must be the best client my back and arms are probably about 90% coverd with my tattoo artist original designs and placement totally up to the artist

I had a client who made me place and replace the stencil like 12 times, then told me to place it on the area of the wrist which I told her would end up painful and make the tattoo muddy and illegible. Then I'm halfway through the tattoo and she tells me that she want the tattoo lower (where I had recommended it to her in the first place).

Don't stress too much, as long as you're nice. They're talking about people who are picky ON TOP of being annoying. For a nice person, most artists are happy to take the time to make things right for you and they won't be annoyed
You’ll be fine! If you researched your artist enough that you can trust them then it will go by smoothly. No one, tattoo artist or not, likes to be micromanaged on the job cause it’ll make it that much more stressful. Healthy communication is key. Good luck!

I got my first tattoo last week, I literally walked in sat down with the guy, banged out a killer stencils in like 5 minutes and boom, I would never fck around with tattoo artists
Cool, some people are more creative than you or maybe they have an idea and aren’t an artist themselves. Not everyone wants 1000 cheap stencils.
As a client, I walk into my artist shop knowing that they are the professional. I give my artists full artistic freedom because I've clearly selected them for their skills and trust them enough to put something permanent on my body. I am NOT going to sit there and nit pick everything they do, because they are the professional in this case, and 9/10 they're probably right! As a healthcare worker, I don't except people to come into my work and tell me how to do my job, so why would I do the same? I have almost an 3/4 sleeve and then some extras here and there on my body, and each time I go I never question artist (we work together collaboratively!!!), and I always leave extremely happy because my tattoo artist just did an awesome tattoo that they were happy and enthusiastic to do! I've never had a negative experience because I remain open minded and listen to my artist because they're the professional ☺️
I agree but at the same time, when I go to the doctor or hospital I don't suddenly lose all my rights as a human, my rights on my health, and my rights on my body. I have every right to question you on whatever you are doing on my BODY or whatever question I might have about something. If I don't like what you suggest, I don't like it, so you either change your suggestion or I change doctors/hospitals. That is and why there are so many doctors and not only 1. If you don't like asking questions, that is on you boo.

Let's all take a moment to appreciate the fact that, at least, they care about what's on their skin. I've never tattooed anyone and have no aspirations to, but, I think I'd rather have a client that's too picky than one with shitty ink that's just like tattoo anything but on my face.
I think it’s got to be a little give and take.
A person wants what they want and they have to live with it.
At the same time a good artist is going to know what works better and want a client to be happy.
If you are having trouble coming to a compromise with an artist easily, you should just leave them alone and find an artist that’s going to suit you better.
Most know what works and what there talking about, people need to be open to having there ideas altered and they will be happier in the long run.

Lol... I've been tattooed MANY times by the same artist for over 10 years. I tell him what I want and where. Otherwise let him decide. I can honestly say, I've never been disappointed or upset. I love them all. Do your research, but usually you know.
If you’re feeling pressured by the artist about the design, placement, color, etc then more than likely you did not do enough research into the artist or their style. Even though the tattoo is for you, the artists have much more knowledge about where it would look best, what colors to use, and how to ensure it will look good for a long time. Give your input, yes but also take into account their expertise. Any tattoo artist will give you what you want, but GOOD tattoo artists will take your preferences into account and provide you with suggestions to make sure that the tattoo comes out the way you envision it. All about good communication!

LMAO when I got my first(and only, so far)tattoo, I was just like, "here's the singular reference I have, it's just a small dino outline :)" and the guy liked my dad and I(We got tattoos together) so much for being easy to work with and pleasantly chatty and chill during the tattoos that he gave us a discount and shared my dad's tattoo on his insta. Respect to my man Chad, you're a cool dude.
I've lucked our with my communication between artists and designs I've wanted. Everything has been exactly what I want, even with with freedom within the artistry. I've only ever brought up one part of a design I didn't like on a free style leg piece cuz it looked like an old lady dolie. But she agreed like oh shit, it does and we moved on with the rest without adding it hahaha. Trust your artist but also your gut!
How horrible; artists complaining about clients that GIVE THEM REFERENCES AND TELL THEM WHAT THEY WANT! Are you kidding me? I get you are an artist and you have artist integrity and want to do your art the way you want to do it, but if you choose a career in tattooing...you have to work with people...real people...who have to have this piece of artwork you've created on them for as long as they live (or longer).
You aren't a hairdresser....the skin can't "just grow back" after you tattoo it...it will scar even if removed or covered over.
You CHOSE this profession...act like it.
If you don't like it, go work with leather or paint or LITERALLY ANY OTHER ART MEDIUM.
if i were a tattoo artist i would 100% prefer a client that communicates what exactly they want over someone that just walks in and says, i want that one on the wall but in red and calls it a day
i feel like first time tattoos are the pickiest because everyone is hounded by "has to have meaning, has to be perfect, you're going to have it forever and ever!"

The more I watch videos with tattoo artists the more I think of them as entitled little kids... they act as if them having to listen to someone being picky for a few minutes or hours is heavier than someone having to live with a tattoo they don't like. Not everyone looks like a child's drawing book and can afford to have shitty tattoos all over, some people really want it to be perfect. If you can't handle that just go do something else because working with people really isnt for you. It's like deciding to be a teacher but hating to have to explain stuff to people.

I like to give my tattoo artist a basic concept and then let them get silly with it because they're so much more creative than I am
