People always mention the obvious exceptions to sequels being crap (Star Wars, Terminator 2, Aliens etc). But Crocodile Dundee 2 is actually a great follow-up too. Builds on the characters, ups the comedy and action. If you liked the first one then you should like the second, especially if you want to see more of Australia.

If you noticed, Mick sat in the front seat of the cab. In Australia, it's a courtesy to sit in the front next to the driver. It is a mark of respect to the working man. Usually by the end of the fare, the passenger and the driver are on a first-name basis and payment is accompanied with a well-wish and a handshake.

This film has a very special place in my heart. I was 5 when this came out. I grew up in a small town in Australia close to the outback (Pretty much was the outback) and when this film came out, it was the first movie my mum took me and my two older brothers to go see at the local theater. It was a Sunday night and it was packed to the rafters. Had wooden folding seats, I was close to the front of the screen, seeing its enormous size. It was like seeing one of our own on screen and a reflection of us. The biggest laugh was when Mick got "Skippy" to fire some shots off at the hunters. Come the film's end, when Sue confessed her love and Mick got on top of the people to "Sheep Walk" to her, I remember everybody in the audience standing up and cheering with every step he took towards her. I have never felt so much joy in one room ever before or since. It was then I fell in love with cinema and devoted my life to it.

I'm a hick from Florida and we always felt a kinship with, Dundee, because we were closer to his character in lifestyle, than that of any city folks. We have gators here mostly and American Crocodiles down South. We hunt and fish and hang out in the woods a lot. That is our Outback. We carry knives and guns but aren't bad people that want to hurt anyone. We treat our women with respect and don't put up with those that don't. We embraced his character as one of us. I was so used to films that portray rural people in a negative light, that it was cool to see someone I could relate to, getting the better of big city snobs and criminals, instead of being portrayed as dangerous, inbred and violent, for no reason. I love this film!

Glad you liked Crocodile Dundee. Your reaction video has shown me that I've not seen it in full (dunno why) so I'll rectify that soon. A few notes on it:
    1. The aboriginal that points out the lens cap was still on was David Gulpili. He was a great tribal dancer who was accordingly cast in the film Walkabout (1971) and later so many other great films. He died in 2021, but so many of his films need to be seen.
    2. We (Australians) call anything outside the cities "the bush".I grew up in the bush, a dairy farm 100 kilometres from the city of Melbourne. It's been a longstanding thing, from the earliest convict days, and means that our "outlaws" were called bushrangers, even those who were active very close to the cities of the time. The earliest bush, though, was somewhat like an English garden from how it had been managed by the first australians (the aborigines). Without their input and use of fire to manage the bush it has become much denser.
    3. Don't believe anything about Foster's Lager as Australia's favourite beer, and as shown in the pub (bar) scenes. It's export only and we drink much, much better beers, not Foster's.

Rewatching the "thats not a knife" scene is fantastic. It's probably the most popular scene from the movie. It was always my favorite when I was a kid I would rewind it and rewatch it 2 or 3 times before I continued with the movie. I just liked the line then, but now watching it I really like the expression on his face. How does somebody say something in that charming of a manner and still scare the pants off of somebody?

The 80's, was a great decade for crowd pleasing, iconic movies. You can never go wrong with the classics. By now, it surely is. I hope you react to the sequel. Like most things in movies there's a touch of truth and a touch a bullshit to the whole shebang. But he does it with a smile on his face and in his heart. I love this movie because Mick is always Mick. Whatever environment he is in he thrives and makes it his environment. He changes the room wherever he is.

When I was around 12 we went on a school excursion to Canberra (most Australian kids do) and visited the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, one of the highlights was I got to hold the prop knife Mick carries around throughout the film!

I enjoy your reactions because you discuss the movies and TV shows on a deeper level, either on the technical merits or simply just philosophically. It is what keeps me watching. Crocodile Dundee was huge in the 1980's and still in the early 90's with video rentals. A nice older movie that was forgotten by the newer generations.

Great reaction. _Crocodile Dundee_ is weirdly almost forgotten, but it was a _super-massive_ hit back in the day. Seminal. More you'd dig:

      _Down With Love_ (2003)

I don't remember seeing this movie when it first came out (I was pretty little back then), but I remember the aftermath of it. Crocodile Dundee started a HUGE craze in America for all things Australian. This movie was quoted and referenced heavily in pop culture for years. Still is, to a lesser extent. It definitely left an impact. I remember the sequel being not half bad. I think there was a third one, but I never saw it and heard it was not good.

I like how you said the filming was keeping pace with the story, when he was spearing the fish. It was a little meditative moment that radiated the art in nature. I think Pride and Prejudice does that as well - many beautiful unhurried scenes.

Linda Kozlowski is a very underrated beauty, and I really enjoy seeing her in anything. Backstreet Justice for her in a starring role.
Paul Hogan is always hilarious, even in the very serious Anzacs, a miniseries about the Australian and New Zealand soldiers of WW1.

A film i've been watching for 30 years, it's nice to see how it hits for the first time. I started taking care of my grandfather a few years ago, he passed over the summer; I never knew, every time Crocidile Dundee was on TV, he watched it. Only that and old westerns.

This was huge when it came out! I saw it in the theatre and loved it like most people did. The subway ending is iconic. "I love ya!"
The only complaint I have is that the movie weighs so heavily into the "dirtbag" current boyfriend trope. Twister did a much better and way more believable job of portraying the love triangle, but it's a minor gripe.

I grew up in the city but there's a fair bit of truth in the Aussie bits, or rather there was... Times are changing and that kind of outback town setting is pretty rare now but the characters are still fairly accurate. Dundee himself is a bit over the top of course for the fun of it all

  • @assaultflamingo2.068

Loved the reaction, and great seeing this film get more attention, it's like a forgotten gem.
It was shot so well, and the soundtrack was ridiculously good and fitting for the scenes, it really elevates the emotion and immersion, that's how a soundtrack is done right.
Some parts are cheesy, but I think that (whether intentional or not) embodies most aussies care-free, easy going nature. Truly a great film, especially considering the budget and that Australia at the time wasn't exactly known for movie making.

I was a kid when this came out and it really sparked a desire to visit Australia for many people in the 80s. Paul Hogan also did a lot of commercials shortly thereafter to boost Australian tourism. You may have heard the phrase, "put another shrimp on the barbie," which came from one of those commercials.

I spent jr high and high school in the Amazon rain forest. With regard to the tribal guy saying Dundee was born in the summer time. That is pretty accurate. The tribes I am familiar with in the Amazon did not traditionally mark time or care about when someone was born. You went through life at whatever pace your body did. No one knew how old anyone was.
Once when I came back to the States to visit my grandparents I just lay down on their carpeted floor. Grandma said, "There's a bed in the other room." I said, "I'm fine. This is great." and I fell asleep. My bed at home in the jungle was solid wood with a thin foam mattress on top.
You feel comfortable in different places. Absolutely. Canoeing on our lake in the jungle at night? no problem. Walking through a downtown city in the US? I was freaked out.
There's more stories, but I'll stop there.

A fun movie is "Lightning Jack" starring Paul Hogan alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in a comedy western.
I love that this movie is more of a fish out of water story above all else, and kinda puts the romance element in the back seat, only popping up now and again to ask "are we there yet".

This is pure nostalgia for me. My mom recorded it on VHS from Danish TV, as it was the only way to see it without being dubbed for us. That VHS tape had been played so often, the quality really started to suffer 😂😂😂 Absolutely love this movie but I weirdly enough like the second one more. It's more action-packed, and the jokes are better 🤭

G’day mate. I really enjoyed watching you experience this fantastic film for the first time. I am Australian and I remember seeing it at the cinemas for the first time back in 1986 here in Australia. Just for your information when it came out it was the highest grossing Australian movie ever made and still remains so. Also when it was released in America back in 1886 it was also one of the highest grossing movies in America for that year (2nd to Top Gun, which just barely made more) and was a huge success over there and widely embraced by Americans. As an Australian I would say it is a very good interpretation of Australians and what we are like. So glad you enjoyed it. It is one of my favourite movies of all tine. I am a fan of your channel now and have subscribed. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Keep up the good work.
