Sequel is well worth a watch.
The sequel is soooo stupid. Making a romantic comedy into a random drug kingpin story, so dumb

And (I think) the part where he switches from a disposable razor to his knife.
You beat me to it. I was just thinking the same thing.
But it can be done, I do it all the time, drives the wife mad. Simple knowledge of where east/west is and an awareness of time passed. I haven't worn a watch in 10 years, not minute perfect but I can get a 15-30 minute window fairly reliably
@muppeteer I was going to ask if you could get it right down to the exact minute, until I read the last part of your comment. I don't suppose people could be as exact as Mick was without looking at a timepiece.
@@ronfehr7899 Minute perfect would be a cool trick but alas I cannot pull that off. I am fortunate that I have a fairly relaxed diary and if I do need to be somewhere specific I do use my phone, just not out walking or sightseeing. It's more of a party trick than a life skill, I suppose our ancient ancestors did something similar. I had an uncle who was a farmer who never had an alarm clock or bedroom curtains, he said "if its getting light I get up and milk the cows. If it's getting dark I go to bed."
Crocodile Dundee was the second biggest movie of the year in 1986 just right behind Top Gun. The sequel is just as good and that is when they fell in love in real life and got married. They were married for 24 years (1990-2014) and have one son.

@@carm3d Yeah, that's the 3rd Dundee movie. It isn't bad, but not really a good movie either IMO. Still, it does continue the story line for anyone interested.
And "Almost an Angel." Same actors, different characters and situations.
"Harlem Warlords" implies a teenage criminal street gang.
The actor playing the limo driver was the uniformed cop "Al" in "Die Hard"
And the dad, who was a cop, in the sitcom "Family Matters".

A friend of mine here in the USA is of Australian descent, and he first saw this movie in a cinema that somehow had a lot of Australians present. The laughter at the jokes switched between the Americans and the Australians because the Americans didn't get the Australian jokes, and vice-versa.
The first sequel to this film is worthy. It's just as fun but it also has a villain that follows them from New York to Walkabout Creek and stakes are higher. Strongly recommended.
Another movie you might consider checking out is "The Man From Snowy River". It's not a comedy but rather a western set in Australia. It's also very wholesome and very well done.
I think Mary would love "The Man From Snowy River"! It's such a great flick.
Sheila is an Australian term for women. Bush is an English word for wilderness (but most commonly used in Australia). There are a lot of Australian terms and phrases in this movie.
"That's not a knife, THAT'S a knife." Such an iconic line. Also, Dundee and Sue's actors actually got married shortly after this. The chemistry was real.

Of course, a lot of other people would have probably followed that up with, "Now give me YOUR wallet." :)

They didn't start seeing each other until after the sequel.
When I lived in Australia (1992-2001) there were incidents were people got snatched by crocs as they camped on riverbanks. Also people who broke down in their 4wd in the middle of nowhere, and having not prepared probably, ended dying in the desert.
This has one of the best endings of all movies. I was around 4 when it came out and It was a good early movie memory for me.
Totally! If we ever came across it on TV, we would stop and watch the end. The music build-up, the running, and the New York vibes never get old!

Is parenthood wholesome? It's a really great film and I don't want to spoil anything by giving away the ending, but overall???

Another feel good, wholesome movie you would like is Cool Runnings, which is based on the true story of Jamaica's first bobsled team. The coach is played by John Candy.

"Ruthless People" is a fun 80's comedy that I don't think anyone has reacted to.
aaah.... actually....Mary, when Mick lifted his pant leg to show the crocodile bite scar, he explained, when a crocodile gets a hold of its victim, the croc goes to the bottom and thrashes its victim until it runs out of air and drowns and becomes the crocodile's food. Mick used his knife and the croc let go. Mick called the HUGE, UGLY crocodile scar a 'Love Bite'.
8;59 Mick looked at Walter's watch and got the time just before he did his sun/time trick. He's trying to impress Sue.
Paul Hogan also did a western in the 90s with Cuba Goodin Jr, Lightning Jack. It's a fun watch, and it's been uploaded to youtube in its entirety.
Crocodile Dundee 2, Quigley Down Under and the adventures of Priscilla Queen of the desert, are another not so known excellent movies.

Don't worry about the roos here. There are more than the rabbits and they are protected however, we do have commercial hunters who are very humane and are only allowed so many to cull based on the amount of money needed for the licence/s(we have camel cowboys who capture for sale overseas) but sometimes, during droughts, they are culled because they starve and eat everything. The cull isn't even impactful to any areas, there are that many. BTW, in the bush, you never drive at night. The wallabies and roos tend to hop in front of you and freeze. The scariest part isn't that, it's the rows of reflected eyes on both sides of the road. All you see are glowing eyes. It's extremely scarey.

Gus was in Die Hard and Die Hard 2 as Officer Powell.
The ending part where he walks on top of people is similar to how Australian Sheep Dogs run across the backs of sheep when they are packed tightly together.

Couple of my sisters' favorite movies from back in the day.
I think only in Italy a bidet is a normal thing (you cannot actually choose not to have one when you build a house or an apartment); anywhere else is a luxury thing.
I moved abroad many years ago and it's still the thing I miss the most. And, yes, you can also use it to wash your feet.
Very big in Japan and I'm sure you could easily have one fitted in most places.
They sell ones you attach to toilets if you are desperate.
@@Cheepchipsable The Japanese are different even though they call them bidet too. The ones we have in Italy have separate plumbing and look exactly like in this movie. You can have one everywhere, but it's expensive, that's why it's considered a hipster thing.

The back end of this film is pretty unusual in its subversion of the "fish out of water" trope. Mick is never a fish-out-of-water because he brings his "water" with him!

There are Alamo references in this movie. Walkabout Creek Hotel resembles the Alamo, Sue calls Mick "Davy Crockett", while Mick himself carries a Bowie knife.
Lord of the rings was filmed in New Zealand, mad Max takes place in Australia
Newsday is a real NY newspaper (Long Island, actually). I've worked there for almost 30 years. The office scenes were shot on location, though they moved to a different building shortly before I was hired.
The thing about not going in the water after watching Jaws, is not just limited to you but it was a world wide effect lasting for decades.
I don't think most people under 30 have seen this movie, but almost anyone had heard the quote "that is not a knife, THIS is a knife!"
After watching your intro, I'm now reimagining this film as a crocodile-based monster movie. 😆

Davy Crockett is a historical figure that's like an American folk hero, that was known as a frontiersman, that existed in the wild country in parts of the US before they were very populated or tamed, so to speak. Later he became a politician, and had been in the US Congress, and then got involved in the "Texas Revolution", if you want to call it that. That's another American thing that you're probably not familiar with, but at that time, pre the Mexican/American War, much of the South West of the US was still part of Mexico after having previously been colonized by the Spanish. Yeah, we once actually did have a war with Mexico in the 1840s, which is when we defeated them and claimed that area as our own, and is often considered the training ground for our Civil War that followed fifteenish years later. Anyways, prior to that the Mexican government agreed to allow American settlers into what became Texas, under the condition that they become Mexican citizens, and abide by Mexican law, primarily the part that insisted that slavery was not allowed. They didn't, and just ignored Mexican law, just did what ever they wanted to, and when the Mexican government objected, they just insisted that Texas was now theirs, which instigated a war with the Mexican government. Perhaps you may have heard of The Alamo, which was an old Spanish mission that the Texans were using as a fort, and many volunteers, including Davy Crockett, came to help defend the Alamo, and they were all destroyed by the larger Mexican Army, but the incident inspired more people to fight and eventually defeat the Mexican Army, and Texas briefly became an independent country of its own, or so they claimed, before being annexed by the US, which eventually kicked of the larger war between the US and Mexico, which we eventually won.
Anyways, Disney had a Davy Crockett TV show in the 50s or 60s, Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier, as well as, well, now a couple movies about The Alamo, which further established his legend in American culture. I'm not sure how historically accurate it is, but he's often portrayed as wearing a racoon skin hat, which after the TV show became a popular thing, and sometimes in things that portray that era, you'll see a child wearing a coonskin cap like that. Probably sounds very weird if you're not American, but it is a very American thing.

Great reaction, Mary! I love this movie and its sequel, which you'll definitely want to see. Paul Hogan, who played Dundee, did more for Australian tourism in the 1980s than their entire tourism board. I remember everyone talking about how great he and the movie were. He's an incredibly charming fellow. G'Day, Mary!

In Spain we got to know Paul Hogan through "The Paul Hogan Show", a sketch show similar to the British Benny Hill show. If you want to see the prevailing machismo of those years and at the same time have a few laughs, I recommend both of them, especially the British one.
Paul Hogan and Linda Kowalski were married, I'd watch them in " Almost an Angel " another great underrated film

Best recommendation like this... Crocodile Dundee 2. Basically a continuation of the first one. I think it's just as good.
You should absolutely visit Australia. If you’re going to go north make sure it’s during the dry but it’s fantastic. We went camping with three young kids, the youngest under one, in Kakadu and it was great.
A very good movie that take place in Australia is the Sundowners.1960
Curiously enough, the movie actually kinda sorta mirrors their Dundee and Sue's own history.
Paul Hogan was married during the film, but hit it off with Linda Kozlowski on the job, Divorced his current wife, and re-married together between this movie and the sequel.
They later divorced as well, but on very amicable terms.
its pretty common to ride in the front of a taxi in Australia, particularly when you are travelling alone. if you sit in the back alone its almost like your saying your 'to good' to sit up front with them.
Consider vacationing around Priest Lake, Idaho in the US. There's Upper Priest Lake where no motorized boats allowed and there's no motorized vehicle access. There's Priest Lake itself with resorts and vacation rentals. There are alpine lakes above Priest Lake in the Selkirk Mountains with hiking or mountain bike access only. Hiking the Selkirks is amazing (but probably infeasible with a little one). Grizzly bear sightings are rare. Attacks almost unheard of, but don't watch The Revenant before you visit.
This was an amazing movie when it came out. At the time, most Americans and those in the west didn't know much about Australia or the life there, people, etc. This was really the first introduction other than maybe the nature channel to the "Australian" way of life and people, and Paul Hogan was the first Australian superstar that most people encountered and knew about. Of course later you would have great people like Steve Irwin and his family, and then a huge influx of Australian actors and stars that ramped it up like Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth, and many others. If i remember, before this movie came out most Americans really just knew the continent and not much else, it wasn't popular or known in western cinema or was many actors from the continent.

Harlem Globetrotters was a sports team.
I lived in New Zealand for 10 months and got to drive on the opposite sides of the road with the steering wheel on the right side. Took a little getting used to but not as hard as you would think.
It's true that the Harlem Globetrotters is a (comedy) basketball team, but what Gus said was "Harlem Warlords." He's implying that he was in a street gang.

The ending of this movie is one of my faves of all time.
Having a bidet isn't about being fashionable. It is about being clean. I think there should be one in every household that can afford it, as well as public bathrooms. It just doesn't make sense when you get poop on you to just wipe it with a tissue. You wouldn't do that when you get poop on your hands.
Btw - Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) and Linda Kozlowski (Sue Charlton) got married for real a few years after the first 2 movies were made. Unfortunately, that marriage ended after 23 years.
Crocodile Dundee 2 is also a fun watch. Also more of a story plot to it.
A couple of movies from Australia for you. They are both Westerns and love stories. The Man From Snowy River (1982) and Quigley Down Under (1990).
When I finally sat down and watched this whole movie as an adult (having seen some clips on TV growing up), I didn't know what to do with myself because it was so entertaining and endearing! Romancing the Stone is in the same vein of adventure and chemistry and definitely worth a watch. Also any Harrison Ford movie like Raiders, Last Crusade, or Working Girl (for New York) have quite a lot of charm 😊
As a side note, have you seen Grumpy Old Men? It and its sequel aren't adventure movies but they are quite fun! Anytime you want a feel-good movie, I would highly recommend checking those out.

He would have been given the nickname Donk as he is strong, a Donk in Australia is old slang for a motor, donks died, means the engines in the car or truck is dead, Hi from Australia Mary :) In real life Paul Hogan ended up marrying the woman in the movie.
In real life the actress fell in love with Paul hogan and they got married.
Paul is an Ozzie national treasure. He started as a painter on the Sydney harbour bridge.
Then he had his to comedy sketch show that was hilarious.
