For anyone on the fence about following this, I HIGHLY recommend it. I did my 20+ yr old table that my dad had made and I was so afraid to mess it up, but I followed this exactly and it looks brand new, with a nice hard finish! It looks almost better than the day it was brought in the house the first time ❤ so thank you so much for the detailed steps!
1) Use paint stripper, with natural bristle disposable brush 2) Use putty knife (rounded corners) & scrape off old finish into box 3) Medium coarse steel wool removes finish from rounded edge 4) Liquid stripper applied liberally with a brush 5) Medium/fine steel wool with long straight passes 6) Use a lacquer thinner brushed on 7) Use fine steel wool for final cleaning 8) Sanding (used finishing sander with 220 grit sandpaper) 9) Apply stain of choice with rag or brush (brush preferred) applied in the direction of grain 10) Wipe off excess with rag. Let dry for 24 hours 11) For top coat, use Polyurethane semi-gloss (stir before using) 12) Wipe table before applying 13) Use natural bristle brush to apply (high quality brush is best) 14) Apply 3 coats & sand lightly in between 15) Apply paste finishing wax with pad of 0000 steel wool
I'm confused because at the 6:34 minute mark, he said he was using a semi-gloss polyurethane and then at 7:24 he said he's using a satin finish polyurethane. Which one do you suppose is accurate?
The grainy video and cheese if fun sound effects had me thinking this was from the early 2000's. Then I saw the amazon box and was like "what?" and was SO SUPRISED to see that this video was posted in 2020 lol
The first guys of home improvements. Ron and Bob Villa. I use to watch these shows when I was in my twenties. I am almost 60 now! I need to finish some new pieces for my new house. This was the only video that gave me start to finish the correct way to complete this project. Thanks. Love you guys!
Sorry, I hadn’t realized he had passed, his teachings live on, I’ve followed his directions and my table that is over 200 years old came out beautifully, thank you!
Oh gosh I was writing for him a comment 😢😢😢 he is in a very better place now . I pray he meets my dad in heaven, who just left me for one months ago. It’s so painful 😭
I was curious about the prices. I was thinking that it could be cheaper to buy a used table in good condition than buy all materials needed for the job
That’s the best price to get antiques for. And surprisingly, many of those freebies end up coming out gorgeous with a little repair first and then patience during the refinishing procedure!
When Ron says sand lightly, sand lightly-Just enough to get the rogue bubbles out. (220 grit). Also I used the Paste Finishing Wax (Natural color), I haven’t used it before but will from now on. The shine doesn’t fade, it just gets better! Thanks Mr. Ron!!! My table looks great!
Yes I wish he had footage/details of that. I find sanding between clear coats (on wood or car paint) to be by far the most nerve-wracking proposition. You have so much material and time in by then, it would be a travesty to eff it all up on that step.
that's my exact dining room table - from Oak Express circa 1998. I still love it. While not in as bad shape as this one was, I need to refinish it too. What a perfect tutorial for my specific needs!
Thanks for the great instructional video. I am going to refinish an oak antique kitchen table. Off to pick up some paint remover, check stain colours and some polyurethane. What a craftsman!
Whats funny to me is that i needed to refinish a table my mom just picked up today, hence doing a little more research (i have wood working experience but never had to refinish anything) and the table in this video is almost exactly the same as the table she got from an old friend today. The design (minus a few little details) is the same. This was the first video i clicked on too. Thats the best coincidence since i can follow the video exactly.

I wrote everything down on paper, and going to try my very best to follow his directions through the whole process! I know my first time won't be perfect, but it will be fun to do it!!. Thank you for this great video!!
Even though this video is old, I still wanted to leave a comment. You did a good job describing and explaining everything in a clear, concise manner, totally absent of unnecessary and self-serving commentary. Well done. I do, however, have to say that I instantly heard the (trombone?) tune that "The Price Is Right" uses when a contestant fails at the delivery of your punchline at the end lol.
I found an Oak table somewhat the exact same as the one you are working on , solid OAk and the gears are heavy duty not cheap for the table leaf . My idea is to carve a channel with my router and design an abstract canal so I can mix a color epoxy resin with a hardener may be add a rope light with in the resin , the look will be like art , if I can get the idea into a prototype with a peace of pine the same girth as the oak and try some affects on that before I waste the OAK because there’s no plan B and I would never get another chance in my life time to redo it again . Making prototypes and rethinking is part of my journey as a refinisher slash artist 🧑🎨 Can you say the word Artist boys and girls ? Yes , exactly 😊
Does the topcoat used have to be oil based polyurethane? Or can one use Minwax Polycrylic which is water based. I prefer the matte finish it comes in. Would it be a consideration of the amount of daily use on this question? Thanks for any feedback.
Your videos are great. The only thing I would expect is the description of materials used in a little more detail so that I know what exactly you are using.
Wonderful video, well made and informative. I'm going to be redoing my grandparents 30+ year old oak table that I inherited. Wish me luck! You definitely earned a subscriber for this 😊

By the way would you know how to put a height table and chairs to standard size. Can’t buy new but maybe it’s cheaper buying a new one?
Thank you so much for this video! I did everything else but ....lol...miss and messed up wiping with a paper towel, any suggestions on how to smooth out the stain?
That's amazing and beautiful but I have one area on my table that got a mildew stain from a potted plant setting directly on the wood. My bad, but I never pick that plant up and just water it in place so I had no idea there was a problem until today when I lifted it up to test how thirsty it might be. How can I just get that one area of mildew removed? I am not going to be sanding the entire table down. I hope you can offer some suggestions. My initial reaction was to use Clorox wipes and get up as much as I could that way. It's not going to be all I need to do, for sure.
How long after the topcoat do you put the wax on you say thoroughly dry , you can reapply the polyurethane after two hours another coat if needed ..I’ve done three coats of polyurethane lightly sanding in between but now I’m ready to put the wax on. Do I wait 24 hours or simply after the two hrs and I could not find that40 steel wool pad in Lowe’s or Home Depot or a local hardwood store I read the can on the wax it says apply with a soft cloth. That’s what I intend on doing, please advise
Hi! Thank you for very useful video and great tips. I tried to do something similar, but something went a bit off, so I’m kindly asking you for an advice: I have a wooden IKEA table. Its top made of several wooden blocks, so it’s not a single sheet of wood. I dyed it using water-based dye, and covered it with the first coat of polyurethane lacquer. The thing is that after applying the first coat I can see that the surface gone patchy - some wooden blocks are glossy and smooth, and some - dull and a bit rough to the touch, where the wood absorbed the lacquer. I was going to use fine sandpaper to even the surface after the first coat of lacquer. But now I’m a bit confused as I don’t know if I could damage the dye layer on the dull patches and expose the wood, as it is obviously very thin. What would you suggest to do in this case? I was going to do at least three coats of lacquer with sanding in between.
Brush on stripper with fairly wide natural bristles disposable brush, remove old finish with wide puddy knife rounding its corners, medium coarse steel wool remove finish from rounded edge of table, apply liquid stripper liberally,
Hmm. Should have watched this before looking for ways to rescue what i have done. I found the stain was drying way before i had finished and it got very blotchy. So i wiped it with acetone. Ron I have a dining table that is similar but gets white rings on it if something is left on it snd since it’s used often it keeps happening ! I’m Able to remove tge rings but what additional coating can I put in the table to prevent this? Maybe the wax wore off? It’s an expensive table only 10 years old . Finish is very matt and I would like to not strip it the color is good on it and the finish just looks very Matt and rubbed in. Please let me know what costing I could put in it to prevent rings and goggles marks from warm dining plates ?

What about prevention of hot spots? Can you put a cup of hot coffee without a ring?!
1) Use paint stripper, with natural bristle disposable brush
2) Use putty knife (rounded corners) & scrape off old finish into box
3) Medium coarse steel wool removes finish from rounded edge
4) Liquid stripper applied liberally with a brush
5) Medium/fine steel wool with long straight passes
