It was a bottomless, dark pit. There was no way down but to fall to your death, and there was no light down there, ever. He couldn’t move. It was impossible, but true. As our hero followed his allie into the forge, a great surge of heat overswept his body. so with a few different prospective friends to my normal party (I don't have any direct players yet, its mostly all set-up), we're gearing up for a new homebrew session. It is a more realistic desert (surprisingly vegetated and not sand everywhere like people associate since me and my co-dm buddy both live in a desert and it is relatively green where we live, with him having palm trees and I have towering oaks and hardwoods), and set long after a great war that tainted the once fertile land with ruin. So, I proposition a theme for an ambience, dry prairie. the dry prairie is windsept and the sound of medium sized animals trot through high grass and crack the dry dirt while predators shift the grass softly enough to not disturb the prey but to be heard by humans, vultures and other birds fly far above, singing songs to each other or calling for the end of animals to be scavenged from.
Being from the desert originally myself, it is hard to explain to people who have never been there how much vegetation and brush there is. For some reason all people can imagine is sand dunes and lifeless landscape. I have seen more animals walking in the desert than I have at other times walking in grassland or forest.
