When you put a "dead" fob as shown at 1:17, how does it work? Does the fob work somewhat like a credit card being tapped or waved near an NFC reader at checkout terminals? I am not clear whether the fob or that weird physical door lock key inside the fob is transmitting to something right behind that little fob holder spot you show in the console. Doesn’t sound like Bluetooth. I’ve searched and have not found the answer. Thanks.
I couldn’t find a clear answer either. My guess is that it uses the same technology as a car with a chip key, but with the idea to start the car when the fob dies. A regular chip key doesn’t have a battery, but it will start a car. Without a key that has a chip the car won’t start. For example if you drove a car in the past with a physical key that goes into the ignition and your turn it to start. That key contains a chip, without a chipped key the car wouldn’t start the chip would communicate with the car and start it” not all key car in the past did”. Basically for theft prevention. I believe it’s the same idea.
You'll need the key to get in the explorer for sure. Call the dealer give them the VIN and ask em to make a key. I don't know how much they'll charge tho.

I also found using the fob to push the start button worked too. 2011 SHO and 2017 Explorer.

I opened the key fob and there was no key what should I do
You'll need a key to enter your car. Is the keyfob dead or is the car dead. If the fob is dead just change the battery in the fob.

If key isn't cut and you need to get in the car, I would call the dealer and complain about the blank key. Is your spare blank too?

Best bet is probably the dealer, or if you have your spare and there's one in there get it copied.
