    In the current heavy Ore Wheat Sheep meta, I go over a Catan advanced strategy concept when playing heavy wood and brick.
    The Catan advanced strategy lessons can be summarized below.
    1. Define and identify blocking settlements and triangle road settlements
    2. Apply and use triangle road settlements and to create open spaces on the board to expand to
    3. Apply and utilize blocking settlements by locking part of the board, especially in 4th position
    I hope you learn something!

    Hey y'all, just wanted to clarify a few things.
    At 3:13, 5:27, and 9:34 the 4/9/11 is neither a Triangle Road Settlement nor a Blocking settlement.
    For a settlement to be a Triangle Road Settlement or a Blocking settlement it has to be on the outer ring, NOT touching the coast or the absolute center hex (11 wheat).
    Anything that touches the absolute center hex is just a normal settlement.
    Last note, I define Triangle Road Settlements and Blocking settlements as "coastal settlements." I regret doing this. Coastal settlements are on touching the coast.
    I'd like to redefine them as settlements that DO NOT touch the coast or absolute center hex, along with everything else that makes them the type of settlement they are.
    Sorry for the confusion if there was any!

      Nice video! I like (and used before) this concept.
      But I think one doesn't have to keep the definition for blocking settlements that narrow, it can widened for broader application. At 5:27 and 9:34 you would block more settlement spots when placing at the 9/10/11 than on the 4/9/11. So one can consider here the 9/10/11 as blocking settlement although touching the center ring. It becomes blocking settlement due to the placed triangle settlements at 5/8/10 and 3/4/6. Also, sometimes even settlements touching the central hex might be considered as triangle settlement (the 4/9/11 here would not be the best example though, since in all cases it's either unlikely or unnecessary to build the two settlements with only two additional roads + starting road from there).

      Very useful video. I have thought of most of this intuitively before, but not so explicitly or systematically. And Not with regards to picking my first settlement from position 1 or 2. I made another set of comments below. I hope they don't come off as critical. I just don't know that "Triangle Settlements" is a good descriptor, because all settlements form triangles with their roads. Maybe "Outward Pointing Peripheral Settlements"? (because the settlement's pattern of potential roads forms an outward pointing arrow; Peripheral, to distinguish from "center settlements" which point outward too.)

    Awesome video. Great concept that I haven't seen much. Not sure everyone would view 1st player (Red) contesting (not racing) the 3/10/11 spot with road player (Grey) as "suicide" [7:29]. Red is already there with free road, gets all 4 settlement building materials naturally, is only really short on Lumber with a 3, and Grey gets no natural Grain. A lot, of course, will depend on who gets blocked, stolen from, who will trade, table talk, etc. but Red has good odds to win the spot.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point, I thought about this too and did take a note of it. There's just so much wheat on the board and I think there's a good chance that Gray can get a trade for wheat. I also think it also is very detrimental to red's game if they lose the race as the free road is extremely important. Losing roads and delaying yourself to the wheat port really hurts.

    Very interesting. I hadn't been thinking about placing blocking settlements to restrict other players choices so thanks for that. I usually go for triangle settlements (though I was calling them Star Settlements) as two completed triangles gives you a lot of options to get to 10 points. I will give blocking settlements more consideration in future.

    This is brilliant!! I call the triangle road settlements the shuriken strategy xD which I did notice as opening up spots, but not on the scale of the whole board or as a specific tactic for a wood/clay strategy! Unbelievable. I normally try to play shuriken if I'm going ore/wheat because it relies on less roads to expand. Congratulations on an awesome find.

    This was amazing!! The idea of blocking other people off is interesting. I think in 7th Position the 5-6-11 is good because of the brick port being close to me. I would think I could get something off of player/bank trades, but maybe that's too luck-based.

    7th placement is would be on the 8,4,3 in the bottom left for sure, then 8th would be 6,5, 11 which kills the strategy in this particular situation, not only that it would allow first pick (red) to most likely take the 4, 9 ,11 which makes most likely a win for red.

    it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out placing a road towards a coast in the aim of a 3 way round and settlement situation is the less risky of the options, otherwise you risk being blocked in by other player positions.

    To maximize settlement spots, place settlements at even-number-road-intervals from the nearest 3-tile settlement. This could create 12 total 3-tile spots, six 2-tile spots and 27 total spots (the theoretical maximum). Filling up the 2nd ring of "Blocking settlements" gives you probably 18 total spots (six 3-tile spots). That means if the spots are split evenly, two players can't win with just settlements and cities. If you fill the 3rd ring of "Triangle settlements" at 3-road-intervals, you gum-up the board to get 21-24 total spots (nine 3-tile ). The difference in 18 spots and 27 spots is huge if you are playing an expansionist game. As such, any 3-tile settlement 3 roads away from the nearest 3-tile settlement can be a blocking settlement. Other odd number distances also, especially 9. But blocking settlements in the ring that you identify do the most damage.

    • @michaellee4276
      @michaellee4276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think of the board as 5 concentric rings of settlement spots. Calling spots "Triangle Settlements" isn't very descriptive, because all settlements form triangles with their roads Also these kind of settlements can gum up the game pretty bad if they are placed wrong too. The 1st ring is around the central tile. The 2nd ring is spots 1 road from the center tile. This is the ring of blocking settlements. The 3rd Ring is two roads from center tile(these are your triangle settlements). The fourth ring is the 12 two-tile coastal spots and the 5th, outer ring is 18 single tile spots. The 2nd, Blocking Ring is special because it can be filled to block the entire adjacent rings which make up all of the remaining 3 tile spots and create a board with as as few as 12 remaining legal spots (eighteen total). (the 4th ring when filled blocks the adjacent rings, but the 4th and 5th rings are less valuable and there are so many more spots here.) The maximized board with settlements 2-roads away from each other will follow a 1,3,2,3,1,3,2,3,1,3,2,3 circular pattern of three tile settlements (counting clockwise or counter-clockwise starting at the top or bottom) (the numbers correspond to the ring number).

    • @michaellee4276
      @michaellee4276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Implications: As you say, If you want more expansionist possibilities, go in the 3rd ring. (for best results, go an even number of spaces from the nearest settlements). These positions work because they actively block the Blocking Settlements in the 2nd ring. Going in the 1st ring also works the same way, though you might get pinned in.

    Couldn't 7th position placing his road inward toward the 5/6/11? I think he'd have a good shot at getting there since grey doesn't have any wheat and he'd even have a decent chance at getting to the 6/9/desert before red since his road production is much better and he'd have a brick port by then. Grey desperately needs the wheat and i'm not sure if he'd be willing to risk going for the 5/6/11 first.

    Aren't there actually four different desert spots? I think that there are two different types of outer ring deserts. You can have the desert in the middle of a side(A), or on the corner of two sides(B). So the position #1 would be outer ring type B while the position in the three player tournament would be type A. I'm pretty new to the game so I could be missing something or it could be that the difference is irrelevant.

    In the real world those placements wont happen as it depends on where the resources are. Planning for hypothetical situations is great, but you wont ever be in a position to use it consistently. Even more so as you have no control over where opponents place their settlements at start.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At higher level play placements like this happen a lot more often and you can predict where your opponents will pick as they are more fundamentally advanced. With weaker lower level players this won’t work as much as you said.

      @@DyLightedCatan do you understand the word "consistently"? Read again what I wrote. Thanks for reply but I disagree.

    if u so confidently say that no one will give sheep or brick or wood to other players. why would anybody give this wood brick player a wheet ?

    I think you get way too analytical and don’t focus on the social aspect of the game and being someone that other players don’t mind losing to. Obviously this isn’t a thing when playing online but in a tournament situation i feel this is a crucial aspect of the game.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course! The social aspect of Catan is sooo important! I just haven't made any videos going over specific table talk, but I am going to go over it soon.
      I've played in a countless amount of tournaments (and won a fair share of them) so I totally get what you're saying. Table talk is essential. It's just a bit more difficult to make a video over this.
      Also, a lot of people's core strategy is flawed in general, which is why I make strategy videos!
      Thanks for the comment and concern.
