  • How do you compare to Canada’s best Catan players? This placement puzzle will give you a chance to put your initial placement skills up against National champions. We’ll also see what the end result of those placements was.
    Of all the decisions in Catan, which one is the most important? Most would argue that it’s the initial placement. Really, can you think of any other individual decision that has as much impact on the outcome of the game? In the comments, let me know what percentage you would assign to the value of initial placements. I’m going to venture to say it’s 60% of this game. If you rush this decision, you’ll end up letting your opponents outmaneuvre you from the outset. Today, you get to match your skills up against Canada’s best players in 2020.

    In CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players build by spending resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) that are depicted by these resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.
    Setup includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each showing a resource or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange. Number disks, which will correspond to die rolls (two 6-sided dice are used), are placed on each resource tile. Each player is given two settlements (think: houses) and roads (sticks) which are, in turn, placed on intersections and borders of the resource tiles. Players collect a hand of resource cards based on which hex tiles their last-placed house is adjacent to. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.
    A turn consists of possibly playing a development card, rolling the dice, everyone (perhaps) collecting resource cards based on the roll and position of houses (or upgraded cities-think: hotels) unless a 7 is rolled, turning in resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, and trading resource cards with other players. If a 7 is rolled, the active player moves the robber to a new hex tile and steals resource cards from other players who have built structures adjacent to that tile.
    Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road and the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points. When a player has gathered 10 points (some of which may be held in secret), he announces his total and claims the win.
    CATAN has won multiple awards and is one of the most popular games in recent history due to its amazing ability to appeal to experienced gamers as well as those new to the hobby.
    Die Siedler von Catan was originally published by KOSMOS and has gone through multiple editions. It was licensed by Mayfair and has undergone four editions as The Settlers of Catan. In 2015, it was formally renamed CATAN to better represent itself as the core and base game of the CATAN series. It has been re-published in two travel editions, portable edition and compact edition, as a special gallery edition (replaced in 2009 with a family edition), as an anniversary wooden edition, as a deluxe 3D collector's edition, in the basic Simply Catan, as a beginner version, and with an entirely new theme in Japan and Asia as Settlers of Catan: Rockman Edition. Numerous spin-offs and expansions have also been made for the game.

    Great video! I tend to say that it doesn’t matter what % placements are of the game because it doesn’t matter. Having good placements but also having good post placements are essential.

      It's kind of you to take the time to watch. Your videos are amazing DyLighted. Perhaps it's better to say that strong initial placements can set you up to win, but they also depend heavily on how you follow up. Conversely, a poor initial placement will almost certainly lead to a loss.

      @@LegendaryTactics it's kinda like a threshold thing. if u have bad initial placements u lose. but if u are playing with other good placements, roughly good placements are a given. someone with slightly better placements initially wont win if their follow up play is poor.

    I predicted 5/8 settlements exactly right (paused to think). Overall I thought white would win. And red made such a bad second settlement choice. I'd have gone for the 8 grain + 6 ore combo to build many cities.
    I suppose about 50% depends on initial placement. The rest is luck and good trading.

      I feel like 6 of them were predictable, but I'm not sure if many players will predict blue's play. Perhaps I'm missing something on those choices though. White did seem to have a really strong early and mid game but yellow had the late game.

    Fun insight I had to pause for the palcements but got like half of them to match with the players which I find as a decent sign. For sure learned something from yellow I tend to go inland for more resource but maybe having some more play with the ports should be higher on my priority list when placeing/playing

    If anybody want to know why the second white placement is not the 8/11/10 more on the left/bottom, please concider also this: If he picked the left/bottom 8/11/10, he would be racing a longest road strategy that is not very good here as the higher scores are not on wood and brick but at weat. White took then the spot shown, so the player who want the 8 weat as well is forced to go with a 12 wood instead of a 3 sheep and white could also speculate to build for the 12/8/11 if the players kept it empty. That was my thoughts and I think there is a lot more of strategy in it

    I actually got them all. (Reds final placement looked good at first glance). Watching Dylighted has helped me a lot in catan. I knew yellow would have come out on top because of reds final placement. He not only blocked blue but white as well for they could no longer get on the sheep port. Other wise I think White would have been able to come out on top. If I were red in this position I would not have contested the upper part of the board but pushed towards the right side against white and yellow since that was the clearest side of the board for expansion. (first player is the weakest imo)
    The 8/12/11 middle left would have been a better space for red for the free road and quicker access to a 3/1 port. This would have given them a pretty high wheat production to start with. There second placement in this video kept them out of 2 resources. Missing one isn't terrible depending on the quality but missing 2 resources is really bad especially since you need wood and brick for settlements and roads.

    IN my opinion, red's second placement is primarily for personal strategic reasons. Blocking blue is probably a secondary consideration. Red's strategy is likely to work toward development cards and cities by doubling down on the ore and sheep alongside red's wheat placement.

  • @WJen8
    @WJen8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can understand why 2nd player placement has a high chance of winning. I personally think playing 3rd has a high chance as well. Although it depends on the level of the players, I've noticed that by going 3rd you risk losing out on a better spot to 2nd BUT it's still not as bad as 4th and you still get to choose a second settlement complimentary to your first. Whereas placing 4th you get good complimentary placements since you place twice BUT the best spots have already been taken; and placing 1st or 2nd you can take an optimal spot but your other settlement might not be optimal and neither the pickups.
    But who knows, maybe you take the best 2 spots and the dice never roll a 9... It's happened to me before...

    It's worth noting that initial placements don't always play out on their statistical probabilities! I've had games where an 11 rolled more than a 9. We don't know if yellow was lucky with dice rolls, robber rolls, or other factors outside of their control.

      Based on final board, this is a game where 8, 9, 5 and 4 likely rolled a lot. You can tell from blue's road and yellow's cities, which indicates a pretty expected statistical game.
      11's likely rolled well too based on whites road and settlements.
      10s and 3s likely rolled poorly. White and red both don't have cities. Also, yellow got largest army despite no ore and weak sheep.
      I assume 6s rolled well given red's builds without brick and outracing blue to the top expand. He probably also hit road building dev card.
      Overall, I'd conclude this game was mostly decided based on placement.

    I think where red went wrong is they should’ve settled in the 12/11/6, they would’ve had a free road out to gate to guarantee cutting off blue and it provides them access to some brick and wood (albeit not a lot). That being said, very surprised to see red didn’t get a single city, I would’ve assume with their set up and such strong pressure they’d be a city building machine. Could’ve just gotten unlucky with dice rolls.

    Hello, may i ask what does peps mean? Im still learning this game

    • @LegendaryTactics
      @LegendaryTactics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For sure. No worries. The Pips are the dots that appear under each of the number circles. They represent the number of different ways that a particular number can be rolled. For instance, the only way to roll a 2 is for both dice to be a 1. So a 2 gets 1 pip. Whereas there are 5 different ways to roll a 6 or an 8, so they each get 5 pips. The more pips you have, the higher your chances of getting your roll. We made a video on the Odds in Catan if you check out our Catan playlist. Good luck!

    I disagree with a lot of the analysis is this video.
    1. White placement was terrible. He should've taken the 8-11-10 wheat and 8-9 wheat port. this would've completely shut down Yellow as she loses access to brick, which was mandatory given her start. Yellow's intention was also obvious the moment she placed her initial settlement. Based on the final board, 8 rolled a ton and white would've run away with the game rather than have 4 points. Going variety is fine if you strong number which is not the case here. His placements gave him an okay (not strong) start with a terrible end game.
    2. 8-4-2 brick was blue's only second choice. Any other choice would've been incompatible, too limited in resources/numbers, or becoming trapped. Not questionable at all.
    3. Yellow's second pick was not questionable at all. She needed brick and it also gives two strong wheat tiles on wheat port. Contesting 5-6 to block blue wouldve lost her the game. The moment white placed, i knew yellow won before the video went further as blue would never choose to block the port in this situation.
    4. Imo, 6-5-12 sheep was the best pick. Sheep is super rare and there are plenty of wheat 2nd picks to complement. Despite having a 12, it's still 10 pits, the most you can start with on this board. If red picked that spot, he coudlve potentially ended with the 8-wheat + free road, giving him an extremely strong city/dev build. However, prioritizing the 6 stone over sheep forced him to be in a postion with weak wheat. He likely had a useless hand most of the game, ending up with 3 points and no cities.
    5. While blocking 5-6 from blue is necessary, it's not because of the ore port. He likely would never have utilized it as he'd be building cities/dev. The danger is giving him the 6 sheep and potentially sheep port. Having that expansion would've put him in a strong city/dev strategy.
