Looks like Steve is enjoying the extra power of the new outboard! You're going to have to hold on tight once it's run in! Another great video, keep up the good work 😁👍
Tohatsu { forgive spelling{ have a good reputation. Run it often as with all gas engines ! Enjoying your videos from Westcoast Canada ! CHEERS from HERE!
Beautiful Bonaire footage! absolutely pretty. Judy seems absolutely not a fan of Tohatsu! the recent purchase. CUTE! We love that! THANKS SO MUCH for taking us with you! Interesting plus informational! Brilliant!
I have been following your channel since retiring from law enforcement quite a while ago and Today is the first day I've noticed when Judy was diving that she is missing some fingers from her left hand. I am very observant but always looking at where you two are sailing and traveling on land in different countries so I was shocked that I just noticed only today. Anyway, thank you for your continued videos as I truly enjoy traveling along.
I lived a few years in Los Roques as my dad used to operate a diving liveaboard. I highly recommend it! It is simply so beautiful and so well preserved with some of the best diving in the Caribbean. If you ever go there I have plenty of islands to recommend :)
Sounds like a great place to go, I wish we had ignored the insurance company and gone. Hopefully Venezuela will settle down and get people will be encouraged to go again.
@@svfairisle Las Aves & Los Roques are quite away from the mainland and because of the military base in La Orchila island, these waters are well patrolled so these are quite safe waters. Los Roques is quite frequented so it’s even safer. My parents used to tell me that these would be even safer than other Caribbean islands like Martinique. Places like Las Aves are really untouched and haven’t been damaged by hurricanes so it’s simply so beautiful & you can be in an anchorage without neighbours for weeks.
Yes that's what I thought. Trouble is until Venezuela sorts out it's current political problems the authorities will label the whole of the country as unsafe and insurance companies will take it off the list of allowed places.
Hello, you two are a great team, your intro music choice was a little fun as you were departing as the yacht was rolling around from side to side. Just so Judy feels a little more comfortable, a few marine mechanics and also manufactures of Catamarans are saying not to go full electric, to keep a Diesel engine as your back up. I know it was your tender motor that was having a bad day, but I think having one electric and one petrol is a sensible idea, especially as you live aboard. I hope you sorted this dilemma out, a much needed item for your lifestyle.
Hey. Steve, I know that you are a busy man but it'd be good if you could add your diverse knowledge and experiences to Navily for we all to benefit by it. Thanks for everything and best wishes 😊
That's interesting, is it a good anchorage there? We had planned to come in a few weeks time as we have booked Renaissance marina mid October when we are going flying to the US for a week. We have a package that has already arrived though so we may come early and anchor out for a bit, any recommendations welcome
@@RichSander-s2z We are thinking of stopping there on the way to Aruba, strictly speaking we would have checked out so shouldn’t stop but I’m guessing the coast guard don’t go there often?
Sorry confused the anchorage with on on the west of Curacao. We plan to stop for a night or two on the West coast of Curacao on the way out then come and try and find a decent anchorage in Aruba, just wondering how protected those ones on the West side are, we seem to be getting the wind in from the South a bit lately
@svfairisle this one seams the best, lots of wind here but up the island you bounce around alot more. So I came back to Surf Side. 8 boats here, we all just hanging here. I go out to Colorado in September for two weeks, buddy coming in ti watch my boat then. In Oct I think onto Columbia and Panama.
I have scuba dived Bonaire on 3 x seperate occassions for 2 x weeks on each visit, renting a jeep & cylinders. It is a wonderful place to scuba dive but I thought it has got more expensive recently, especially since they introduced a $75pp tourist tax last year. I too love everything electric but for sheer power to weight ratio, it is difficult to beat the 2 stroke outboard when covering longer distances. Thought you might have went for the 15hp Enduro? Love the videos!
Yes unfortunately Bonaire has made it very expensive to visit now, not just the tourist tax but they’ve tripled the price of the mooring buoys which are now $35 / night, it’s why we only stayed for a week. I think for us the 9.8hp is good. It gets us on the plane with both in the dingy which is the main thing
2 days .. 4 days, no big deal - now thats cruising ! Looked like Bonaire worth a week long dive trip. 'mystery meat' in the supermarkets as they are marked in dutch.
I have the impression that you heading very quickly…..away from the Caribbean 😮🤔 One escaped hurricane will do ….. But he ,still floating happily…so enjoy!👍
Well people think of the island chain as being the Caribbean and to be honest yes we feel we have seen enough of it really (we couldn't continue up beyond Grenada until the hurricane season finishes in Dec anyway) We've always felt that the more interesting sailing and destinations are probably the Leeward islands and then the central American coast of the Western Caribbean. So we will make our way West then North to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Cuba etc. It will be interesting to see how it compares with the Windward Islands
And to be honest,i am in the north again, orkney, yes fair isle, shetland, far oe,and then i had enoug off bad weather,so the hebrides, and scotland at the moment…..and the weather is still awful 😢🫣😵💫😵💫 So a little Caribbean would do wonders
Hey guys gals. Lovely video as always. A I have watched your films from the start. I must say with out offending and politely I don’t like the funky. Using you are playing along with the film. Love you as always. Mark.
I understand your reasoning and being prudent, but somehow it’s a little sad that we let the insurance companies decide where we can and cannot go. Great film !
We're don't let ourselves be ruled by insurance as we showed by crossing the Atlantic uninsured (because they wanted 4 people aboard to keep the insurance) and by going up to help in Carriacou and loosing our insurance in the hurricane zone. Those were calculated risks though that we felt comfortable with. Going into the Venezuelan Atolls with shallow coral not well charted and with unknown welcome from the locals would not be a wise move I think.
When I was in Bonaire in 2019 all diving was done off mooring balls , as anchoring was prohibited. Bonaire exists to service the tourist industry. This takes two forms. First the cruise ships. Sometimes as many as 3 at a time in port. Second, the shore based divers who generally come for a week. The folks who make their living off of the tourist divers have a system to insure they have a mooring ball to moor to so their clients can dive. The notion that a private yacht, such as my Hans Christian 48 Bravura, could just go out and get a ball and enjoy a dive was nearly impossible. You either had to go at the crack of dawn or wait until late afternoon. While it is all understandable, it was still both frustrating and disappointing. Of all the Caribbean islands I have visited Bonaire is the only one I have no interest in visiting again.
Well maybe we benefited by being here in low season, but we had no problem finding an overnight mooring ball or the yellow day buoys for diving. The availability of overnight buoys may have been also due to them tripling the price last year! They are now $35/night. We tended to just go to the yellow dive buoys with the dinghy as I wouldnt have really trusted them even for a brief visit with Fair Isle most were empty, the proper balls are very good though with twin lines and a good concrete base.
I have an epropulsion engine to power my dinghy. I thought the batteries were totally sealed and would float if dropped in the sea. So i was concerned to hear you had flooded yours. What happened?
A pin fell out of the charging socket about 3 months ago so I had to pen the whole thing up and jury rig a repair. Couldn’t get a replacement socket so soldered in a XT60 socket and cut the plug off the charger and crimped on a male XT60 to allow me to charge again. I noticed when I opened things up that it was damp inside and there was a slight crack in the top casing. So I sealed it up and obviously sealed where the cable for the XT 60 goes through. It worked well for 3 months but then died and when I opened it up again there was lots of water inside! No idea where it got in all seems sealed. I think maybe the rubber gasket between the casings was out of position but it really looked like it was sitting straight, mystery! All I can say is if you have to open up the battery for any reason be really careful how it goes back together
Steve, thanks for the comprehensive reply. As a coastal cruiser I don't use my outboard anything like as often as you so won't hit up against the robustness of the charging pins. Thanks again for your excellent videos.
@@nigelbaker8999 Yes I'm sure you're right. I figure a years use for us is equivalent to 5-10 years use for most recreational sailors so hopefully we can give an idea of a long term test for gear in a short period of time.
