Great tutorial! Just want to let other followers know that those clamps will leave marks on the leather so don't put them in to far. I found out the hard way.
Great tutorial I made a simple leather sheath for a blade I black smithed out of a Harbor Freight 17mm wrench. I used a speedy-all stitcher to sew it up.
Wow. I was super bummed that I misplaced my Coldsteel Tanto Kobun sheath the other day and can't find a replacement online. I got into anodizing balisongs a couple of years ago and acid etching blades. I absolutely love knives and the crafstmanship that goes into them. Now, I can create a beautiful, custom leather sheath because your video and instructions are superb! I am really excited to make my own sheath now and see more of your content. Thank you!
Very good videos Airin. I read several comments noting your very good instruction avd explanations. The word is getting around TH-cam. Keep up the great instruction. God bless.
That is a very thick leather. Glad I’m not the only one who tortures their swivel knives. Thinner leather feels like I’m working with veneer and it’s way too fragile. I can’t have that. I’m all thumbs and need a sheath that’ll take an ass whuppin’. Love your vids, keep it up!
Doing a play by play now... and yes, my waste was in the loop. Wet forming before shaping and such seems to be the key here. I wet formed afterwards and so all that leading up was a pain to get everything folded properly on the knife. Watching the forming now. .... on to part two!
I have made this type of sheath many times, many different ways and this is what I have settled on so far. I am not adverse to adopting new techniques if they make the process more efficient with less waste and a better end product! Thanks for watching! Did you like that I launched both videos at the same time? Or was it confusing?
@@Aleeknives Wasnt confusing at all. In fact, it was a welcomed surprise. I was all into the first vid and when I saw that time was running out, I was kinda bummed so it was a nice surprise that both were released at the same time.
I wondered if some people would click on the second video first and maybe not even watch the first one. This one got really long I think between the 2 videos it was like 40 minutes of edited footage! I bet I didn't even take that long to make the actual sheath! Other than waiting over night to let it dry
Those Big Black clips are “Binder Clips”. I have a bunch of non-painted clips, several sizes. I thought that the Welt was in the sheath to protect the stitching from being cut & only needed to be in the sheath where the blade was sharp.
I recommend dyeing the leather before you wet form. At least for me, it was impossible to get an even looking dye job. Maybe it works fine for black, but not for brown. It might be that I am a newbie, but I wish we were told to dye ahead of wet forming so I didn't have to start completely over.
What size clips did you use to hold the leather closed? I tried this method but apparently I used to small of clips so it left in prints in the leather plus the ink from the clips bled into the leather. I used 4-5oz veg, tan leather.
Hey Chris, I made my mark from 01 tool steel. I carved a negative image on the end of a piece of tool steel using a dremel and a carbide burr. then I heat treated it
Integral is an option. I think you missed what was happening in the video though. I used the scrap left over from making the welt to make the belt loop.
A couple things to try. Make the next one with tighter tolerances, and make sure you use something like super sheen to coat the leather. The only way leather stretches is from water or oil. Super sheen helps protect from water. It may have to do with the knife design also. There are multiple variables
When I first started I would buy belly strips because they where less expensive but harder to work with. Now I buy sides or even whole hides if the price is right. I typically buy sides at $75-100 depending on the current sales. When they are running a good sale I might buy 2 or 3 at a time
@@Aleeknives I’ve had really good luck buying off of Amazon, especially if you can find a sale. super informative and easy to digest for beginners like me.
Glad you liked it! Cheers
Thanks for this. I've made knives for awhile but thanks to your info I now make nice sheaths for them too. Makes them a lot easier to sell.
All jokes aside this is very informative and useful for a naive trying to learn letherwork

I really like the formed sheaths. They are more "Personal" than the one size fits all styles.
Totally agreed man! Thanks for watching!

Great video, can you use lacing to stitch this up as in whip stitch or the more fancy double stitch?
What size clips did you use to hold the leather closed?
I tried this method but apparently I used to small of clips so it left in prints in the leather plus the ink from the clips bled into the leather. I used 4-5oz veg, tan leather.
Do you have a video on how too make one when the blade is winder then the handle?
can you wet form leather if its dye already will it hurt the color
The dye I use is water based so no. Not at all!
@@Aleeknives if you want quality leather use Hermann Oak leather or wicket and craig
@@Aleeknives Tandy leather is not top quality leather
Hey man great video! Question...I bought a filet knife with a leather sheath...how can I form the sheath that's already been made?
If the sheath has already been treated which I suspect it has there isn't much that you can do. If it hasn't just get it wet and form it to the knife
How would you suppose I make a double loop for the belt? Almost like the sheath with the leather strip hanging up to where I have to ribbit it down?
I will make a video on how
Aleeknives My man thank you🙏 I was thinking it would possibly be the same as the strip but just with 2 strips and Ribbit them down when read?
Is vegetable (oak) tan really an option? it's the only kind I've found that can be water formed successfully
Where do u get ur leather?
I generally buy from Tandy leather
Nice, can you tell us where to get a makers mark, talk about yours
Hey Chris, I made my mark from 01 tool steel. I carved a negative image on the end of a piece of tool steel using a dremel and a carbide burr. then I heat treated it
@@Aleeknives A few weeks ago, I asked about your makers mark for your knives. Is this the same makers mark stamp?
Yes, I didn't put a mark on this blade because I didn't have a flat to stamp. That is the 1 downside to using a stamp over electro etching a mark
What animal leather did you use?
Bovine
By cutting out that huge rectangle don't you create a lot more waist then if you are to just create an integral belt loop?
Integral is an option. I think you missed what was happening in the video though. I used the scrap left over from making the welt to make the belt loop.
Why does the leather “sizzle” when you put it in the warm water ?
Good question that's always fascinated me also my assumption would be that it's pushing air bubbles out as it's soaking up water
Kind of like Rice Krispies
So I made one and it worked for a while but the leather must have stretched and now the knife doesn't stay in. What did I do wrong??
A couple things to try. Make the next one with tighter tolerances, and make sure you use something like super sheen to coat the leather. The only way leather stretches is from water or oil. Super sheen helps protect from water. It may have to do with the knife design also. There are multiple variables
@@Aleeknives awesome! Thank you! I got a lot of compliments on the sheath... More than the knife actually 🤣

What leather tools are needed?
I go over the tools needed for this build in part 2 which is linked in the comments. Hope this helps!
Where do you buy your leather? It is EXPENSIVE!! Especially 8-10 ounce!

Sorry I got side tracked! I always buy from Tandy
