According to james..this song is about his stage alter-ego...james used his stage persona as a scapegoat to increasingly keepin people at bay while livin a rockstar life n removing himself from the world to numb the hardship of being on the road playing sold out arenas worldwide
I see it as someone's side in themselves they have to resort to in decision making times to make the hard calls resorting into the side of one's self that is evil and letting it take over for either vengeance or for greed and doing what ever it takes to reach one's goal at the cost of the individuals humanity and morals losing a part of themselves in the process until there is nothing left of who they once was
I think he's talking about any self-destructive lifestyle. You are your own destruction. Your own worst enemy.
To know some of the meaning of these songs you have to know a little of James Hetfield's background being raised as a scientific Christian. 'The god that failed' says it all.
I never really stopped to think of the creativity myself of these lyrics but they can be so open to their meaning. As you say it definitely sounds like demon possession but really I think its another song about how blind faith will overtake you.

I think the song is about how you grow through life, the two "people" that are both technically "you" (past and present) talking to each other. The past you explains that he is the one who got you to where you are today and molded the person you have become now. How he is and always will be there to protect, hide and take the blame for you when you do something bad (You blaming your present actions on your past) Basically to sum it up it's about a person who cant let go of their past and think what they did in the past will always be there to show up in the present and future. Pretty much someone being controlled and influenced by their past self.

Also some parts of lyrics talking about his past self being his mask and scapegoat, being the person to blame and to hide behind. I think that's him (present self) using his past self as an excuse for what he is today, for any bad actions he does. Like the lyrics "I'm your eyes when you must steal" He blames his past self when he steals and is caught stealing. So basically like ppl who use their past to justify their bad choices and actions presently
