Never understood that saying, from my childhood my parents listened rock and metal and would let me to listen as well, and every song that they were listen never was “just noice” every song had meaning, even if I didn’t get it at the time, I had feeling that whole song meant something more.
James Hetfield was writing about his own alcoholism without realizing it for nearly a decade. Food for thought. Fucking amazing song, and great reaction! ^_^
This album will always be one of my favourites ever! I highly recommend "My friend of misery" from it, a criminally underrated song you'll love!

I swear, just because an artist or musician wants to go in a completely different direction, or in Metallica's case, write shorter songs that just got to the point doesn't mean that they are "sell outs".
Metallica hired Bob Rock because of his success with Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" album, and that THEY NEEDED HELP WITH WRITING SHORTER SONGS THAT GOT TO THE POINT!
James and Lars have said in an interview for the 30th anniversary for the "...And justice for All" album that they noticed and realized that their setlists for the live shows on the Damaged Justice tour got shorter because of the longer songs on that album aside from "One."
Kirk Hammett stated in an interview that once the band had finished playing this song, one of them up and said, "We're never playing that f--king song ever again." because the audience got bored around the 8- or 9-minute mark.
METALLICA HAD TO MAKE THAT CHANGE THAT THEY DID FOR THE BLACK ALBUM which ended up benefiting them and helping them in a lot of ways.
Aside from the obvious radio hits, the Black Album has some gems - Through The Never, My Friend of Misery and The Struggle Within are bangers!
l love Nothing Else Matters, its a ballad that has been covered all over the world in so many genres by so many people, from violin, orchestra, piano, even elton john called it one of the most beautiful songs and it made james tear up from his comment
This is one of three albums is listen to whenever I am testing new speakers or headphones.
The bass is phenomenal in this album.

But I was told that this was the album they were labeled sellouts. What a freaking joke. Most of this album is pretty badass, in my opinion. My favorite song from this album is "Of Wolf And Man".
I know it's a cliché but my favourite song off the black album is nothing else matters, was the first Metallica song I can remember hearing (after Enter Sandman) and the first I ever learned to play on my bass. 🎸
"My friend of misery" is definitely one of my favorites from this album. Your mimd will blown away! Enjoy the entire album

"My Friend of Misery" is one of those deep cuts from this album that unfortunately doesn't get the credit or recognition that it deserves. Same with "Of Wolf and Man", "The God That Failed" and "The Struggle Within."

I remember where I was when I first heard this album and song. I always took to be a song about an internal and external conflict. The inner person is sometimes evil but the eyes and thoughts while the outer is the mask to cover up whats really happening. Great reaction Lilly! Enjoy your day!
Bought this album when it was first released and wore out the cassette. Fav song is still wherever I may roam. Guitar solo gives me goosebumps.
My friend of misery off the black album is my favourite. As soon as i heard it.
They made the right move with this album if adding many millions of fans through a change in their sound that appealed to many new fans was the goal, though it somewhat disappointed hardcore fans from their thrash roots before. In any event, a great album for me that has been in my rotation since it came out. They still can bring it. My favorite off the Black Album is about 6 songs but if I had to pick one today, go with Wherever I May Roam, that tune has big balls! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
And yet, you have people such as Smiley and others spouting off shit like "Metallica sold out with this album." or "Metallica went downhill after this album". or etc. which is such bullshit.
It's as if the whole entire purpose for this album went right over their heads, or those people have their heads so far up their own asses and worship the first 4 records like no tomorrow. Oh wait!
Those same people also don't comprehend or notice that Metallica also made the change that they did with their sound because of how some of the longer songs shortened their setlist, and that the audience started getting bored.

Hardcore fans are always toxic, a little bit of change can drive them to be a nightmare sometimes.
We can see that not only in Metallica or in music, for example in videogames with what happens in Resident Evil.

The God That Failed is my personal favorite but Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters are timeless and for good reason. This album had to happen, whether or not I, and many Headbangers would disagree at that time…it’s a phenomenal album that conquered the world , and is the reason they can still sell out a stadium to this day!

My Friend of Misery, Wherever I May Roam, The Unforgiven, The God that Failed. Those are probably my top picks from that album.
And Lars is Lars. People can hate on him, but he is one of the most influential drummers out there. From his early trash days, the classic era and Justice, the 90's, and people even still talk about the 'St. Anger snare'. People hated that tone but 20 years later still talking.
Hell, people don't even realize that it was Lars who had the determination as well as the drive, and the will to make Metallica happen.
I must admit that the St. Anger snare grew on me. It's still not my favourite Metallica album by a longshot, but putting the album in the light of the background story that molded it, it's become one of those albums I'll sometimes pop in my rotation for a bit.

Saw the live in Arlington, TX a couple of weeks ago. Twice. I’m still bruised up from the pit. Those were my 15th and 16th Metallica shows.
This song was written under the impression of the 1978 movie Magic with Anthony Hopkins. I recommend it for viewing, then the essence of the song will become clear.

Lars drumming is on point on this album. He alternate his break on each song. Never repetitive as on the last album. On the god that failed during the guitar solo lars part is just insane! so groovy!

I`d say Holier Than Thou is my favorite. The buildup in that song is AWESOME! I actually like the whole album a lot...other than all the singles. SO played out...I DO still love Sad But True. It`s a classic.

SLOW AND HEAVY GOT TO LOVE IT
I love this song. It's about having an inner personality to put on and do the things we normally are either to scared, shy or intimidated to do. Kind of like Gullum in the Lord Of The Rings. It's about putting on the confident personality when we're anything but confident.
All of the songs of this album was good. My favorite one was the unforgiven interms of melody. Interms of hype sound through the never.

Thanks to this album I started listen to metal and rock music and I really started to listen music and feel it.
On top of that, I have every single song on that album associated with different events of my adolescence life, so each individual song has really strong meaning for me. :)

I'm probably one of the odd older school fans that liked the black album I think it's pretty much all great there are a few fast songs on there still. favorites well all of them but ones I probably have listened to the most in the past sbt, unforgiven, roam, through the never, god that failed. especially roam the playing is so good

I just went and watched Metallica in Los Angeles last month on the 25 and 27 both shows were amazing. Lilly maybe check out some Mercyful Fate The Oath I would say is a Flawless Album by that band. 🤘

Metallica's “Black Album” is the beginning of their current era, where they sought to change their more aggressive style for a more accessible, varied one and with it a change in their mentality and image.
The songs from 1991 onwards became medium tempo, slow, with different tunings like in this song where they use low tunings like in "The Thing That Should Not Be" from Master Of Puppets.
They also began to give more emphasis to details such as acoustic guitars, melody and harmony, modern guitar distortions and a notable Grunge influences like Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, with whom they have been friends since then, and to draw more influences from the 70s such as UFO, Scorpions, Michael Schenker Group and Led Zeppelin.
In addition, Kirk at this time very much expressed his love for Blues, Jazz, Alternative Rock and some Electronic music artists. James began to focus much more on his lyrics and adding some Country Rock to the band. Jason was into all above too. Lars has focused much more on the business side than the musical side since this time.
I always thought that Lars had a bit more hands on with the business side of things after Cliff Burton died because they were on a European tour around the time that the untimely as well as very tragic accident with Cliff happened, and they also had some tour dates in Japan around that time too.
Watching these videos I get reminded of how old these songs are. It's like.. Metallica songs don't get dated.

My favorite of the album is the struggle within.. Trust me the best
This song couldn't have come out at a better time in my life, I was 16 and a bit bitter, it really helped me navigate my teenage years and become a productive adult. I love this album from beginning to end, the wedding song my wife & i used Nothing Else Matters is here, but this was the first commercial success for Metallica, One had opened the door to radio and MTV, but this is where the mainstream came to Metallica " not the other way around" Sad But true this is the album where many old school fans en masse turned their backs on Metallica,. Myself not included.
My favorite is between “Don’t Tread On Me” or “Of Wolf and Man”
Metallica writes a lot of songs that deal with real issues, mental health and addiction. And I think that's what makes them a great band. When a song that you put a piece of you in it and the music makes you feel the lyrics, that's a great song. Not every song is for everyone but that doesn't mean it's a bad song.

He's nowhere near where he used to be in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's but you can't deny that he was good. Lars is still good in each record they release 😝
