If you are afraid you will have accident because you are more vulnerable then you will. You can't be afraid to ride.Just know what to look out for and stay the hell out of peoples blind spots.Know they are not looking for you.
How about imagining others aren't children and stop with the lecture about how cars are safer. Everyone knows that. Assume that people are going to buy a scooter and give them the best information you can about scooters. This video was scooter information light because of time wasted talking about other things. Pathetic effort.
This video is dated. I just purchased a new Honda scooter. And when I was in the showroom, I noticed that their new, top of the line motorcycle, the Goldwing, sells for $28,000. Futhermore, Honda is now putting automatic transmissions in them. Looks like the clutch-shift transmissions is going the way in motorcycles that it went in cars.
50 cc scooters are used to meet easy insurance and registration requirements. If 80+ cc scooters didn't require licensing or registration, I don't think 50 cc bikes would sell at all.
I own two scooters! I own a 2010 Genuine (PGO) Blur ss220I scooter and a 2013 Kymco Downtown 300i. Both of these scooters received “Scooter of the Year” standing. They are both made in Taiwan and run well. If you are from the U.S. you can call their U. S. Headquarters and ask them questions. Genuine has excellent customer service; ask for Dean! (Yes! Taiwan makes GOOD scooters - I personnally would NOT buy from China; that's why they are so much cheaper. It's called junk) Go! Genuine & Kymco!!
I had a Kymco Agility 50 for 12 years and put nearly 10,000 miles on it. It was pretty bullet proof. However, it could be a little temperamental when starting. I just purchased a Honda Metropolitan with fuel injection and liquid cooled engine. The thing starts first time every time.
This guy barely gave the useful information you should know. Especially on the Ruckus. There is so much more to learn. Hope you've been wise and researched further beyond what the putz in the video has to say.
As well as any sort of availability of parts and tech support. Good luck finding some kind of manual or non-universal item for something you bought online.
3 years ago my wife and I got 2, 300cc Ice Bear Zodiac's trikes yes still a scooter yes still need a license both of us enjoying riding and being larger even better. We also went to riding school and at 69 we are enjoying life fully
there are many scooters that will go just as fast as the average bike and you have better wind protection and much more storage. I had a 400 yamaha that I could do well over the speed limit around 160 KPH and in the rain as long as I stayed over 70 KPH I staid dry, and had no problems keeping up with bikes even on windy roads. You can get a Honda PCX that will do over 100 KPH and get 100 MPG and have lots of storage what bike gives you that for under $4000.00 new. And scooters put a great big smile on my face, every time I go out. And yes I have had many large motorcycles over the past 60 + years and liked them all but Scooters are just as fun and much better for a lot off things such as shopping, or keeping dry you and your cargo.
What chinese scooters (especially those bought online) don't have is the post-delivery inspection and higher quality minor components that you'll find for more expensive purchases in big names and dealerships.
I like the idea of cheap transportation but not sure about riding on the road with other fast-moving vehicles I feel like I would back up traffic not a good feeling either
milkywaycrasher you cant be afraid to ride a scooter after seeing this video just stay out of peoples blind spots and watch out for traffic if your afraid to get in a reck than you problebby will but if your not afraid then you wont its just that simple just watch out for TRAFFIC AND STAY OUT OF PEOPLES BLIND SPOTS!!!! OK!!!!! :)
A Honda ruckus goes 39mph at top speed. It is engineered like a Ferrari and costs 3500$ out the door price. YOu buy a Ruckus or any HOnda scooter, it will last for years. My Honda elite 50 is 25 years old and still going strong. Just stay away from low priced cheap crap import scooters. RH DSD
Yep same here,I bought a 2003 Honda Ruckus & the sweet thing about the Ruckus is you can mod the engine out to make them go 50-55 miles an hour & that way you can out run yer Ex-girlfriend who won't leave Ya ALONE!
I had a Kymco Agility for 12 years and put nearly 10,000 miles on it. The only issue I found was that it could be a little temperamental when starting. I just upgraded to a Honda Metropolitan and couldn't be happier. Starts first time, every time. Has the added features of a trip odometer, clock, fuel injection, and liquid-cooled motor.
Im not following your rationale about the MPG, a car goes faster, yes, and with an efficient vehicle you can travel around 40 miles per 1 gallon of gas, If I can travel 100 miles per 1 gallon of gas how is that different scenario? If I work 10 miles away I can make 4 trips in a car/10 trips on the scooter per 1 gallon.....what am I missing here?
so many people say Chinese scooters are junk, but I've owned Chinese atv. and they said the same thing, that's funny because mine never had a one problem in the three years I owned it. and that's taking it in the mountains in Oregon, and there trails. which most people east of the mississippi river have no Idea what tough trails are.. it was a taotao 200cc. PS. just watched a video on u-tube ( scooters across America ) A father and son rode two 50cc scooters from san Francisco ca to N.Y. City. one was a Honda and the other was a Chinese scooter that had sat for four years with out starting, gave it a tune up and tires and had no trouble at all. well it was as good as the Honda.. Make your own judgment . watch the video. scooters across America..
If you're going to get a 49cc scooter you have to go with a 2-stroke and forget the 4 stroke models, simply not enough acceleration or power. I own a 2005 Yamaha Zuma and a 2004 Kymco People 50 and both go easily 40mph (with a 160lb driver) ... since the Kymco is lighter it goes 45-50 no problem. Both are 2 stroke. I think the Yamaha Zuma is probably one of the best 49cc scooters ever built and for the price you cannot beat the features (big beefy suspension, big fat tires, ton of storage.
Ehh depends on how you treat a four stroke I had a 49cc TaoTao racer that had an r6 body and I could do 50 on it all day, hell a carburetor and air filter was all I did
The Zuma seems nice. However, there is no flat floor to put my 5-gallon diesel/gas can on. I like bringing these cans to the gas station to get filled. The mess stays outside.
misinformation at 1:58. . ten inch wheels are perfectly stable at 55mph. perhaps not as stable as a bigger wheel scooter all other things being equal, but safe and stable nonetheless.
I bought A 2018 Honda Ruckus in June of 2018 and I was wondering why does it Die when I turn the throttle too fast.?? Even in a standing/sitting position.. If I turn the throttle too fast it will die.. but it Doesn't do it if I (slowly) turn it.. Why is this??.. considering I bought it Brand New
the Title should say "DON'T BUY A MOTORCYLE OR YOU'LL FACE CERTAIN DEATH" instead of a Scooter buying guide all it talked about is comparing a moped motorcycle and a 4 wheel vehicle/car and the dangers you'll face instead of ALL the advantage of a motorcycle like low operating cost and insurance, nimble in traffic, perfect for short city hops, doesn't need huge parking space, minimal maintenance, affordable and all the good things a motorcycle is compared to a car etc etc.
Good review but I'm not making my decision based on 1 person's opinion. ALL motor vehicles have some kind of drawback, but do the research and find out for yourself. Don't just be taking a critic's word for it.
I took on a small challenge to see how fast a 49cc ruckus can be made to go without changing the displacement. So far with a new intake, exhaust, Synthetic oil, and jetted carb it will hit 43mph before it hits the rev limiter and asks for more. After a new head, cam, programmer, coil, plug, and carb im sure slightly larger tires and variator work it could hit 50+mph.
l bought a honda cub 50cc ohv back in 1959 it would do 45mph and 200mpg and would produce 4.5 hp, 60 years later on and they seem to have gone backwards, the suzuki 50 2 stroke from the same era could do 60mph
inspectyerbooty It's true! There are 20 million scooters in Taiwan. Quite a few got hit by trucks because the riders were stopping for red lights right next to the truck in the blind spot zone of the truck and got hit when green lights on. Easy to find parts, cheap, absolute garbage quality, in the course of one year you gonna have to start buying parts to maintain this garbage on the road.
Rather than buying something new, and overpriced i advise everyone to check out the used market first. In my opinion their is always going to be people that fall on hard times, done with college, or get bored with their toys which gives me the cheapskate the opportunity to save big over buying new. Personally i would never buy brand new.
Keep excited I have ridden both bike and scooters and enjoy scooter more ,they have much more to offer just get one the write size for what you need 50 cc are great for town and back roads, but a 150 cc for the faster roads that are 80 kph or 250 or 400 cc for faster roads 100 kph. I have been riding longer before that guy was around over 60 yrs. and ridden almost every size and stile of bike, He needs to put more time on scooters of different sizes and learn what he is talking about.
I got a 150 cc Chinese scooter brand new 2011 for 800.00. It goes up to 80 mph. But I only. Like to take it up to max 55 mph. This guys numbers are all over the place and wrong. Consumer reports should be embarrassed by this poor information they are putting out.
HOnda ruckus have storage under the seat with a Honda storage ruckus bag. The Yamaha Zuma 50 is another grade A scooter. I wish these commentators would get their facts correct.
You can actually ride scooters, even the 50cc ones practically anywhere except the interstate, but who would want to ride on an interstate, anyways? With a scooter, you will very quickly become an explorer, and your best friend, a reliable map. Yes, you'll ride slowly, but that truly is part of the fun. The comfort and the enjoyment of taking in all of the views as you travel to your next destination, makes every traveling session a new adventure. . Scooters, above motorcycles, are far more practical. They provide considerably more storage space, they are far less noisy and far less intimidating, making them far more tolerable and acceptable in society, allowing you the innocent capability of parking your Explorer Buddy practically anywhere you wish without the slightest complaint. . 150cc scooters have the same capabilities as the 50cc scooter to manage to travel 100mpg, providing you actually travel the speed limit. The faster you travel, the more fuel you consume, the less miles per gallon your vehicle manages to travel. Anything larger than 150cc, and you're losing miles per gallon. That may not be an issue for you, but truly, there's not really any reason to go over 150cc. As long as you are going to travel by scooter, living as practically and economically as you can, you really don't need a larger motor, even if you're traveling cross country. 50cc and 150cc scooters, have a smaller, thinner body structure, which allows your scooter to appear cute and unobtrusive. Larger motored scooters, better known as "maxi" scooters, become wider, and are often the same size as a motorcycle, making them more difficult to squeeze between objects and making them appear cumbersome, intimidating, and as much a nuisance as a motorcycle. They also have considerably less miles per gallon, most in the market today boast around 55 to 60 mpg or less. In their favor, though, I will comment that they do generally have very good storage space. . With a scooter, you don't have to switch gears, which doesn't seem like something that is cumbersome, but speaking from experience myself, you have no idea how stressful it is for your mind to remember to switch gears without stalling out in moving traffic, while you're trying to be as aware as you can, paying attention to every detail on the road. I'm sure other motorcyclists will feel the need to comment about this, as it being second nature, and no issue at all, but in comparison to riding a scooter, there truly is no comparison. It really is as easy as "twist and go", with a scooter. There are no worries of switching gears. You have far greater ease of mind, and therefore, a far greater opportunity to truly enjoy your ride while focusing on your surrounding environment. . The only true piece of worthwhile information that this man said in this video, is that you SHOULD take a riding class, and if that is not available to you, there are literally hundreds of videos here on TH-cam, that will share great tips and advice, such as MCRider, for instance, a motorcycle class instructor that teaches you many safety techniques, and most definitely encourages you to go out into a parking lot and practice them, so if you were to need them on the road, those techniques will be second nature to you and may very well save your life. In all truth, it doesn't really matter what vehicle you drive, you should always be putting in an effort to learn and practice safety techniques to be a safer, more responsible, and more efficient driver.
Also, one last thing I forgot to mention is the cost of insurance. With a scooter, insurance is very cheap. I only pay $6 a month for my motorcycle insurance. What's that in comparison to hundreds of dollars for a car? . I pay about $20 a month, for insurance and hundreds of miles worth of travel in gasoline. Bet you can't do that with a car.
so why bother saying that if i may ask. just click unsubscribe and be done with it. subscribed or not, ( im not atm) they still make money whether you watch all or part of it
well since i'm the bicycling king of kings i guess i better place this video in perspective these are not scooters. moped defined is one person, and 30 mph only and maximum 50cc. scooters meanwhile such as the TBX EFI 260 have larger wheels, trunks, fairing, and are freeway legal. but who cares about definition or diction - fact is those "things" with tiny wheels shouldn even be on the roadway period. Very true about the larger wheels being superior ALWAYS buy a 29 inch mt bike vs 26 and or 700c wheels for lowest rolling resistance and longer lasting tires and a smoother ride u will work MUCH less with bigger wheels, and or so will your engine. . I would never place a gas engine on tiny wheels. NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR. why? i know best. TRUSS MEEE. they shouldn't even be tested those tiny wheels on gas power are sheer poison rite off the bat. for 2,750 shipped a CMS POTENTE 300 watercooled SCOOTER has EFI, enourmous carrying capacity and 90 mph top speed with full fairing to keep most rain off of u AND KEEP IN MIND THESE FAIRINGS EXTEND TO YOUR SHOES AND KEEP YOUR FEET DRY AS WELL. Nother good choice the REFLEX scooter CLONES such as COMMON NAMES: MC-54-250, MC-54B-250, MC-54-250B, YY250T, MP-250A, VIVA 250 Roadster, MC-SL22A, 250 Ranger, 250 Road Queen and these copies of the reflex offers a wide range of aftermarket parts. These bikes will do freeway, for constant freeway the Aeolus 400 EFI from extreme scooters is a better choice, $4,350 shipped. ....now to cover 25 miles out and back my ultra efficient, practical, durable electric bike is all u ever need goes 50 miles no pedaling on 6 pennies and can easily be pedaled when battery dead with massive carrying capacity front porteur and rear basket, top speed 28 mph. unfortunately my e bike design is by far the best on the planet and i only built one. oh and that lovely bike he is sitting on at the end aint worth a damn if you want to be comfortable and dry and hope to carry anything - and that fairing is beyond worthless and was designed by the devil himself fallen angels are ruling right now and they do NOT like efficient machines especially gas powered ones too bad they have infiltrated the consumer reports. (and too bad this message will get deleted)
This is a super misleading video. The commentator obviously has no experience with the scooter world. I'm a long time rider and dealer. You can get a very well engineered and built, 150cc scooter, not with 10" wheels but 13" wheels (same as every Honda/Toyota automobile from the 70's-80's), for $1200. They have a Honda GY6 engineered engine. Get 60 to 80 mpg depending on your riding style. Are comfortable, more maneuverable, and as safe as any motorcycle. I am losing serious respect for Consumer Reports as they pile up more really poorly produced videos such as this one.
Everyone that changed there mind after this video! you can get a 100cc Big Bore Kit for your scooter that makes it go 65mph for $60.00 also he lied. they dont go 30. they go 35-40mph 45mph tops and if you want faster speed then get the cheap big bore kit and go 65-75Mph tops
This video is stupid. The 125 to 150cc scooters it show are vespas or chinese and have carbuetors. Yamaha makes better scooters with fuel infection and with lower price tags.
if your 250lbs or more its hard to get them up to 30-35mph ive had a couple 50cc mopeds... college/for a few months after a car repo...only the 125cc/150cc get to 50mph unless your like 90-100 lbs or something...im 250lbs and heavier since the 1990s
the aprilia sr 50 is only 50cc and it gets up to 50mph, my kymco super 9 is a 50cc and it gets up to 48mph, i have a daliem cordi 50cc and it gets up to 53mph. for someone trying to get advice about scooters your doing a horrible job, u can get many name brand scooters in the 150cc range for under 2000 dollars, those motorcycles u listed cost alot to keep them going, a pair of tires for them could cost as much as 4 car tires, and many other costly things, scooters are low maintenance
Personally i advise everyone to stay away from anything Chinese period! They may be cheap, but you have to question yourself if it can/where be serviced, or where/if parts are available. I can sleep at night knowing i can find parts for my Honda no problem. Some ignorant people may think i overpaid for my Honda, but i bought a solid product that lasts which it has been doing. I hate people who put Chinese scooter prices on Japanese scooters when their is a big price difference
I agree with you on the quality of the Chinese scooter. However, I had a Kymco Agility for 12 years and nearly put 10,000 miles on it. It was pretty bullet proof. The only issue was that it could be temperamental when starting.
Old video. Typical CR bias. Ohhhh, this is so unsafe, like a car! It's the driver that is either safe or unsafe, by the way they drive, not the vehicle. Obviously, this guy grew up where he had to have full gear to ride a bicycle when he was a kid! I grew up in the 50's before seat belts, helmets, knee pads, shin guards, etc, existed and lived anyway. Don't live in fear cause that ain't livin'!
i hate to break it to you the vespa and the ruckus are both chinese all you are paying for is the name thats it!my 08 kinroad 50 cc scooter goes 45 on flat ground.
Don't go by this video alone. This guy it a tool. He was handed a script by some mostly uninformed executive I bet and hasn't presented enough info that is available for all to research.
I just bought my first scooter a month ago. Never thought Consumer Reports would test a scooter
If you are afraid you will have accident because you are more vulnerable then you will. You can't be afraid to ride.Just know what to look out for and stay the hell out of peoples blind spots.Know they are not looking for you.
I thought this was a buying guide, I know that a scooter has no roof lol.
Yea no shit i agree
True, but no heater... that took me my surprise!
It's the freedom of open air riding
Although I was aware of these facts excellent informative video! 👌
How about imagining others aren't children and stop with the lecture about how cars are safer. Everyone knows that. Wow...no bias here.
You forgot to mention that a motorcycle pretty much has zero storage when comparing to a scooter.
Plus, there's the douchebag factor with motorcycles.
I love my Yamaha Zuma.
What chinese scooters (especially those bought online) don't have is the post-delivery inspection and higher quality minor components that you'll find for more expensive purchases in big names and dealerships.
Should do some of the 150's and upwards as trikes for stability for some people who don't feel safe on two wheels
They exist but they're about $1000 more than the scooters.
my 50cc kymco super 8 with 70cc bore kit ,19mm carb and gears will hit 80mph.Has big brakes to start with,a must.
80kph lol
Bought a Ruckus last year. Reaching 900 miles now.
I like the idea of cheap transportation but not sure about riding on the road with other fast-moving vehicles I feel like I would back up traffic not a good feeling either
Wow, consumer reports really hates scooters. Well I like them, there must be something wrong with me.
What a strange conclusion to jump to...
How much is it?
Can this go offroad

Does anyone know what that Kymco model is called? I LOVE IT.
The us sucks at scooters in sweden you can get a Yamaha Aerox for like 400-2700 and tune it up for another 300 and go like 40-50 mph

i know right
+Calm Gamer I have both, and ride the scooter (Vespa) more... at least in town.
Is that a ruckus
Do you need a license or insurance for a scooter.
+samuel marcum replay the video and turn up the volume LOL
If they are over 49 cc. you need a motorcycle endorsement. Yes, they need insurance too.
Nice video

Did he really say anything that wasn't already blatantly obvious?
He basically spent half the video describing how a scooter isnt a car...
+Jesse Deptula and reminds he reminds people to take a thaftey courth so you can ride your thooter more thafley
+Jesse Deptula Noticed that; very irritating.

My Yamaha Smax 155cc goes 74 MPH, indicated by GPS. Speedometer shows 82 MPH.
I got a 50cc moped and i can go 45 to 50 mph
I get my Ruckus up to max 42MPH all the time, but I'm 125LB. I also own a 280cc Vespa that goes 85MPH.
@kb3gjp123 Depends on the scooter and the weight of the rider.
should have mentioned the burgman 650 or the silverwing 600, now those are some nice scooters or what I like to call, big boy toys, lol.
Wrong, Chinese GY6 50cc and 150cc parts are all over the internet, very easy.
do you work on it yourself ?
Easy to find parts, cheap, absolute garbage quality, in the course of one year you gonna have to start buying parts to maintain this garbage on the road.
Is this Tom Mitchler 🤔
Rather than buying something new, and overpriced i advise everyone to check out the used market first. In my opinion their is always going to be people that fall on hard times, done with college, or get bored with their toys which gives me the cheapskate the opportunity to save big over buying new. Personally i would never buy brand new.
Omg 2009 ..rip
My chinese has ABS on the front (anti-lock Brakes)
Um... what? The only thing on Vespas that are Chinese (well, Taiwanese actually) are the CVT transmissions. And that's only on the Piaggio line.
50cc is best!
Money done
:)
i was so excited about scooters until this video
Lol no shit
watch u-tube about scoters, this guy is full of it..
Milkywaycrasher These are shitty and ugly scooters.
Don't take this guy in the vid seriously
This video was made in 2009. That was nine years ago. So lots has changed since then.
The....Vespa is full tilt? @ 3,000$? I wonder if he is aware of a Burgman executive or a Honda silverwing :/
Maryland 50cc only requires a drivers license
CT is also like that.
Also, no, scooters and motorcycles don't have roofs (
Also, one last thing I forgot to mention is the cost of insurance.
50cc top out at about 40MPH not 30MPH.
That sounds about right.
so why bother saying that if i may ask. just click unsubscribe and be done with it. subscribed or not, ( im not atm) they still make money whether you watch all or part of it
since when do 150cc scooters get the same fuel economy as a 250cc motorcycle? and since when are 150cc scooters all over $3,000??? lolll
The Freedom Van My thoughts exactly!! Dumb video!
I had 3 Honda Sprees back in the 80s and I rarely wore sunglasses much less a helmet. Different era. Wear a helmet.
agreed
Were you also depressed? : (
you know I didn't know that a scooter didn't have air conditioning or a roof I think I'm going to buy a car then who knows
This looks more like an iconic scooter comparison rather than a rational guide. You'd better buy a good used one.
well since i'm the bicycling king of kings i guess i better place this video in perspective these are not scooters. moped defined is one person, and 30 mph only and maximum 50cc. scooters meanwhile such as the TBX EFI 260 have larger wheels, trunks, fairing, and are freeway legal. but who cares about definition or diction - fact is those "things" with tiny wheels shouldn even be on the roadway period.
Nother good choice the REFLEX scooter CLONES such as COMMON NAMES:
MC-54-250, MC-54B-250, MC-54-250B, YY250T, MP-250A, VIVA 250 Roadster, MC-SL22A, 250 Ranger, 250 Road Queen and these copies of the reflex offers a wide range of aftermarket parts.
I can't legally operate a car but I can legally operate a scooter.
Scooters are better for riding off the highway because of how slow they are.
+MrCjjones101 The scooter speedmeter might say 45 but will really be going 38. The factories make these about a 17% speed ratio.
+MrCjjones101 remember to take a " thaftey courth "
the Ruckus can easily do 50 and still get over 100 mpg
no lol
This video is stupid. The 125 to 150cc scooters it show are vespas or chinese and have carbuetors. Yamaha makes better scooters with fuel infection and with lower price tags.
Fuel infection lol!
i wanted to get a scooter so badly ;--;
Really a 50cc goes 30mph? Nah I had a 50cc peace sports super motor it went past 50 on flat ground
if your 250lbs or more its hard to get them up to 30-35mph ive had a couple 50cc mopeds... college/for a few months after a car repo...only the 125cc/150cc get to 50mph unless your like 90-100 lbs or something...im 250lbs and heavier since the 1990s
@@mikesuzio2566 So don't be 250lb.
There is no way your able to hit 80mph on a 70cc kit.
Jeez, talk about stating the obvious! Also what a terrible sweater.
the aprilia sr 50 is only 50cc and it gets up to 50mph, my kymco super 9 is a 50cc and it gets up to 48mph, i have a daliem cordi 50cc and it gets up to 53mph. for someone trying to get advice about scooters your doing a horrible job, u can get many name brand scooters in the 150cc range for under 2000 dollars, those motorcycles u listed cost alot to keep them going, a pair of tires for them could cost as much as 4 car tires, and many other costly things, scooters are low maintenance
Captain Obvious approves this video.
Some scooters now have abs
I'm just looking for something cheap , and reliable to hide in the woods while i go hiking for a 4 weeks.
This is NOT a "buying guide" at all. It's a introduction to 2 wheeled vehicles.
I suggest he knows not as much as he thinks seeing as there are more choices out there than that and i know of better prices
a waste of 3:44
Why do they make these things look not worth buying their awesome to drive for fun
Condescending is the worst communication.
1:35 lies
5.19.19
A sign of rust. When there was no evidence at all.
or just get a small car..
PLuA cant afford it
lol! 70cc scooter isn't going 80mph no matter how light it is.
This was just a slam video against scooters & nothing more
i hate to break it to you the vespa and the ruckus are both chinese all you are paying for is the name thats it!my 08 kinroad 50 cc scooter goes 45 on flat ground.
Buy cheap and add 350$ in mods
After watching I do not want to buy a scooter
Don't go by this video alone. This guy it a tool. He was handed a script by some mostly uninformed executive I bet and hasn't presented enough info that is available for all to research.
