  • It's time to talk about the tow rig, I've loved my 100 series Land Cruiser for towing our van around the country but I am out of GVM and with welcoming another little boy to the family, somethings got to change

    Great idea to do the gvm upgrade than looking at a new vehicle a little bit less in change over which you could have spent on the upgrade and I would put the bike on the caravan giving you more room for a smaller car fridge.great idea with the overhead rack in the back great for storage good luck with the rest of your trip

      Thank you, this is working at the moment and doing ok without the fridge for now but bike will be getting replaced soon for s bigger one so may need to look at a bike rack or something. Will get weighed again and see what room ive got to play with on the van too.
      Thanks for watching and the ideas

    Great Decision spending money on the car you have. They are a tough vehicle, and it suit your family needs. You don't have to spend $150k plus buying a flashy new car just because others have. Love the channel.

    • @Ourwhittleadventure
      @Ourwhittleadventure  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dont think i could justify spending $150k+ on a vehicle, some prices people are paying is just ridiculous on something that depreciates so fast. Id rather invest that into something if i had it.
      Shes a tough old girl with lots of life still so she aint going anywhere

    Good on ya. I reckon you've certainly done the right thing to keep your wagon. From what I've read written by others, over in Oz, Toyota parts & agents are more common than service centres & parts for the American trucks. I had a 1995 Toyota Hilux Surf wagon with the 3L diesel engine for towing for 9 years. It had done
    320, 000 km when I sold it & never missed a beat. The key is getting it seviced regularly. Happy travels team. 😊

      @Ourwhittleadventure  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cheers buddy! Toyota parts are really easy to come by even in rural areas ive never had an issue getting a part.
      Think i found the right car 12 years ago, about to click 300,000kms so its just about run in now 😅

      Yeh our 100 tows are van with ease, happily sits on 100km/h all day everyday but definitely save some fuel if i can slow down a little on those quieter roads. They are comfortable, capable, easy to work on and parts are easy to get hold of, for me they are an ultimate touring vehicle!

    Peace of mind is priceless when you’re on the road and what a great decision.
    That rear axle load really is the skeleton in the closet?
    Even with our GVM upgrade I recon we are close at 2000kg?
    And I couldn’t believe it when I heard last week that Pedders have re classified the BT50 diff to now be 2120kg after their GVM upgrade!

    • @Ourwhittleadventure
      @Ourwhittleadventure  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh it can be, being that i dont have drawers or fridge and only 250kg on the ball its only the steel rear bar that makes the rear end heavy so hopefully its all sweet. Will know soon enough.
      Yeh an upgraded rear axle would go a long way for most vehicles!

    Hi Mark, I was really hoping you were going to tell us who plated your 100 series with the modification that you have. We have a similar rig and when weighed we were about 80 Kg over so we removed the rear bench seat, mats and a few other things ( only 2 adults ) to stay legal. We have the items that you have in your upgrade plus airbabs, sorry we never court up when you were next door the last few weeks in Yeppoon but we had heavy head colds and we didn't want to give that to baby Heath. Good stuff guys, can you please tell me the breakdown of your weight capacities now? So GVM is 3500, does that reduce the towing capacity of 3500? As a GCM is not stated on a 100 as far as I’m aware. Cheers.

    • @Ourwhittleadventure
      @Ourwhittleadventure  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that one is going to be dependent on who you talk to.
      Its pretty common to accept that the GCM was 3260+3500=6760 (have also seen 6680 written down)
      So the safe bet would be that the GCM stays the same, but given that there is no published GCM it was always just 3500kg towing capacity it coupd be argued that it is still you GVM+3500kg so could see a GCM of 7000kg now.
      Im going to say it remained the same but for me i was 6300kg as a combination before this so even at the smallest GCM i ever saw written down i still had 380kg of GCM available to me.
      This is why just the small GVM upgrade was more then enough for me.

    Wow you had me worried that you were going to waste $$$ and go to a vehicle that would not be anywhere near as reliable, cost effective and easy to maintain, PLUS hold its value.
    Also there are GVM upgrades available for the 100 Series up to around 4100kg (expensive but worth it as the 100 series and 105 series are probably THE best (even better than a new 300 series) Toyota Landcruiser ever made.
    And don't even go near the throw away after 10 years Fords, Mazda's etc.

    • @Ourwhittleadventure
      @Ourwhittleadventure  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did see a company that offered that large of a GVM (not cheap) it replaced rear differential but from everything i read QLD state regs wouldn’t recognise it anyway.
      I got the 3500kg now to match the axles so im pretty chuffed, just need a little wiggle room.

      I have a HZJ105R ( 1HZ NA, now turbocharged) and was quoted $900 for a 10% gvm upgrade with no modifications. He checks brakes and suspension and a few other things. I will say however that I have fitted drilled n slotted discs all round, new calipers, new master cylinder and braided s/s lines. I have old man emu suspension with progressive 300-600 (I think) springs on the rear with airbagman airbags. Brakes were done mainly because they were tired. Current gvm ( as per vin plate) is 3180 so 10% will give me an extra 318 totaling 3498. Which is really all I’m looking as it’ll be van ball weight with a bit to spare. Business is Transmod at Oakhurst near Maryborough Qld. I might add also that this quote was about 12-18 months ago.
