Our Whittle Adventure - Exploring Australia
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ม.ค. 2021
Hi there, We are Mark, Clemency and Liam Whittles along with our two kelpies Kosta and Curi.
We have now been travelling around Australia for over 2 years!
We set off as a lap of Australia but very quickly fell in love with the lifestyle of being on the road and spending our days together as a family, so we slowed right down and started working our way around the country.
We work remotely for a company back in Perth but also stop every few months and work in whatever is going (hospitality, retail, caravan parks etc.) This works for us, we have met so many amazing people around the country because of the way we travel, and we are learning a range of new skills.
Our videos are there to capture our adventure on the road, they are made in the hope that you watch along regularly, get to know us and share in our adventures. We love interacting and even meeting some of our followers as we go, so if you see us out and about please do stop and say G'Day!
Safe travels

TOP 5 CAMPS NOT TO MISS - Lap of Australia
being a mum is a full time job, you need breaks, just like you'd expect in a job
Absolutely! Can be hard to come by at times, need to make sure we prioritise it
That’s one thing about the old orb spiders. They won’t hurt you but when you walk into the web in the dark, it’s like a cargo net. Always supremely funny when it’s someone else 😂😂😂
Hahaha yes! I hate walking through the webs!
What's the big deal about the spiders, are they dangerous? Thanks for the video
Nah not these ones, harmless to humans and make beautiful webs, i actually quite like finding orb spiders but there were thousands on this bridge, everywhere i looked so it was a bit unnerving and would freak out a good percentage of people i would imagine
@@Ourwhittleadventure I'm not a big fan of spiders, but I suppose in Australia you may need to be careful as they can be deadly. I'm in Scotland so spiders over here are harmless. Enjoy your trip with your family - I hope everything goes well for you all
@mfree9202 oh yeh we have plenty of dangerous ones here, but these ones are all good. Would love to visit Scotland one day!
Another great video guys! Loving the drone shots!! The way you both talk to your kids is amazing. I'm loving how curious and adventurous Liam is! Keep up the awesome content (but remember to have some rest in there too 😜)
Aww thank you, i loved that drone footage too. Liam is definitely curious 😅 so many questions and do our best to answer them! Thanks for watching
Best chocolate place. Cocoa nib.
Will have to remember that for next time! Thanks
Wauchope is pronounced..war-hope!
Hahaha yeh we learnt! So many NSW towns we mispronounced
Noice Vid...
Cheers buddy
A great idea that I sure would help you is to change out all the non slip cloth you are using (that you said moves) to yoga mats. Just cut to shape and they don’t move. They have that added cushioning and you can drag things across them and they don’t move or tear. They are also wipe clean. $7 aprox 6th x 2ft from Big W ect or Reject type shops. Happy Travels
Ah thats a good idea thank you! Due for a bit of a refresh! Cheers
The Burdikin bridge, dam and river are huge, so beautiful. Wow, I’m glad you said about the spider sticks, I am going to walk the bridge next time I’m up there and I’m Sh… scared of spiders. Good to see you’re staying where its warmer thank Bris area at present. Cheers Judy
Haha spider stick for the win! I hate walking through a web! It is a beautiful river, would love to see it when its full
The little fellow looks happy 😊
Yeh hes a happy little boy
Love this video the children are growing so fast so lovely❤
So fast!! Blink and you miss it
Another great video. I don't mind spiders but there certainly are a lot there that's for sure. Such a beautiful area but it's a shame about the weather for you. Hopefully it will get better so you can get out and enjoy more. Take care, stay well and enjoy.💗
Yeh it was a bit relentless there for a week or so but now weve had sun for 2 weeks straight so its been bliss!
Now who doesn’t like a Big Mango 🥭? Awesome episode guys! 🕷️
Haha thanks buddy!
Nope, nope no spiders nope But love bowen Great video and the huge bridge by drone 👏
Nope train! I enjoyed the drone footage, i thought it was beautiful. Thanks for watching
Pal you are NO motor mechanic and from your comments never will be. That timing belt is flexing way too much on decelerating. It will let go very soon unless repaired.
Thanks mate, i will get on to that one ASAP. Cheers
Look mate my comment was tongue in cheek about the mechanic part. Your sense of humour is invaluable at times of need. But do check that timing issue it looks easy to get on the early cruiser.
@gregorymatthies5297 yeh it is easy to get to. Ive almost lost it before so i will get on to it, its going to a mechanic in a couple days for a bit of love. Im not a mechanic and never wish to be but i do try and save some coin where i can
@@Ourwhittleadventure yes good on you and good comment
Gr8 ep …. Spider bridge 😬 did you notice the spider on your cap on that section of the footage 😮
Made ya look 😂
Haha had the hais on the back of my neck stand up
As I mentioned on your Facebook post, I lived in Homehill in the 1970's, driving haul out tractors on the sugar cane. Didn't see too many orbs but plenty of red back spiders. The fishing there was great. I used to go on a boat belonging to one of the cane farmers out past Cape Upstart. I loved my time there. The Burdekin Bridge is an amazing structure.
It is a pretty impressive bridge, seems to be a bit forgotten about. Would love to see the burdekin river “Full” to really appreciate the bridge for what it is
Fan viscous hub should stop straight away when engine stops? Yours kept free sping?
Your not the first to say that, it is going in to a mechanic next week for a once over il get them to have a look. Thanks!
Aftermarket straight 6 exhaust manifolds almost always have problems since the quality of the metal used and the research and development falls far short of OEM resourcing. Sometimes elongating the slots/drilling out the holes in the manifold where the studs/bolts intersect the manifold solves the "snapping stud" problem since the elongated hole now allows more movement by the manifold which "slides" past the stud... rather than bending it, and bending it, and.....every heat cycle... when the edge of the hole in the manifold stops the expansion by levering against the stud. Sometimes OEM also make the same mistake...with alloy heads having a different rate of expansion to the exhaust manifold
Yeh ok, that makes sense. Something to think about if this happens again. Cheers
Looks the goods!🙌🏾
Weve loved it, shame i havent been able to use it much these past few weeks but thats the property owners rules
So glad everything went well with the engine, always such a worry when somethings not good. I actually have a sound like a fan belt squealing, after seeing this video, I’m taking it down to have checked, I’m an older lady so can’t do it myself, I use to be a mechanics TA, but beyond me now, so frustrating having to get others to do things for you. Enjoy your continuing travels, look forward to the next one. Cheers Judy
Yeh i would find that frustrating too! Hopefully its a simple fix for you and doesnt cost the earth, im super thankful Troy and I managed to do it and didnt have to pay that labour cost this time. Best of luck
Gladstone has to be a good place to breakdown as toyo's are every where there..😁 I have lots of relations living and working there.
Haha i was pretty fortunate that i picked it up here. Wouldn’t have been so successful elsewhere i dont think. Not a bad area either, had a magic day on the biat a few days prior
Diesel life 😂…. She’ll be good for another few hundred thousand k’s 🤙
Good job and good friends helping you. Just a tip from my mechanic days, I was always taught to retention bolts afterwards after initial run especially on areas of high heat like your exhaust manifold to check they are in their torque specifications still, its a pain going back in there but could save you more headaches down the track. Great video and channel.
Thanks mate, yeh thats a good idea. Its going in for a service next week i might get them to just go over it all for me
Hey guys that deepwater camping spot is bloody awesome, not sure if you remember the little dam in the river by camp but myself and the kids made that one afternoon when the water level was a bit lower. We used hot water bottles before our diesel heater and just recycled the water in them and reheated. Keep up the good work Cheers
Ah thats so cool! Yeh it was a nice spot! Yes we used hot water bottles the first 2 years too but got rid of them when the heater worked so well, wish we tucked them away now. I had the heater fixed a week after this though 👌🏻
Did you put a full set in while you had it apart ???????????????
How lucky are you to have a legend like Troy in your life?! Good job guys!
Extremely lucky! Top bloke, beautiful family. Missing them heaps
Interesting ideas on storage. But having jackets and other things near the bed looks untidy to me. What's the " paid promotions ?you have disclosed? Whats the weight limit for The hanging shelves in one wardrobe ?
Yeh we dont really like having the jackets hanging there either but its the best we have found to work for us, in summer/warm areas its usually just hats there. I paid promotion was just acknowledging the support from the companies logos at the start. Safe style, compgas and new age that we had received products from. Im not really sure what the weight likit would be sorry
Your lucky you have someone to help you out
Definitely! Wouldnt have attempted it solo i would of booked it in and spent a fortune
For future reference if you are trying to drill a hole and need to centre it, get a bolt that will screw into the thread of the stud hole( in this case). Centre punch it and drill it with a 2-3 mm drill in the vice to get it perfectly centre then screw it into the hole your trying to drill into use the 2-3mm drill to start and importantly centre the hole. I’m a retired aircraft maintenance engineer and if I had a dollar for every bolt n screw I’ve drilled out I’d be richer than Elon Musk. We used make centring bushes on a lathe that fitted into the hole by a few mm and were about 20-30mm long. You just put the small section in the hole and rest sat flush on the outside and was tall enough that the drill bit was keep straight and centred.
Oh thats a brilliant idea! Thank you for that! I will definitely remember that for next time i ever need to do something like this! Thanks for watching and for the advice
What did the plaque say behind the swing? You can learn a lot about HISTORY 9f regions.
Ooh i can’t remember sorry. This was a year ago now
Hey mate, Do you run a DC Dc charger
No i don’t, ive thought about it as i think i get too much voltage drop from car to van but i dont have anything in the back of the car to need one for that
@@Ourwhittleadventure I was thinking of adding the Miniboost Pro.
@jamieweston4495 yeh ive heard some have success with those. Because it charges from solsr while we drive its never been too much of an issue for me but would be a great way to boost up the chsrge on a driving day
Might be a good idea to check the intake manifold bolts as well. Mine came loose a few years ago
Ive had them off just recently when i did an intake clean so they should be good in theory!
Massive congratulations to you for taking the time to do the preventative repairs that will ensure your travels continue. Great mates to help out too! We've sold our New Age after our trip last year but love your videos as they're 'real' and not all about merch etc and glamourising it all.
Thanks mate! Yeh shes an old girl i have to keep an eye on a few things and not let things go too far. Thanks for following along, we do try and keep it very real, is not always perfect though we know how lucky we are!
Great idea going lithium batteries, I’ve switched to lithium for my second battery because running my car fridge as a bit of a freezer for bait and and esky for drinks and some food in storage containers, when I started my car the Alternator couldn’t put enough charge back into the the Agm battery as I was only using it at night and a small generator during the day or my battery would have had not enough charge for overnight even though I have a solar panel on the roof of my Ute. So after watching keelan’s story on TH-cam (I wish he talked a bit slower) so I went to I-tech purchased a battery DCDC charger and battery monitor and the guy said I shouldn’t have too many problems getting power back into the lithium battery off of the alternator going down the path I’ve taken. Might look into another small fridge/freezer for the bait giving me more room in big fridge for food on not so much as a freezing alternative. But have a few jobs to do on the 4wd Ute ready for summer fishing trips.
Ah awesome! Yeh i think i would put a similar setup in my car if/when i put a fridge back in. I have two AGMs under the bonnet and no accessories so ive not needed to worry in the past but it would be nice to have some more of a set up in the car. All $$ though so will continue to work through my priorities
Great effort mate💪 The old girl is certainly testing you and possibly giving you a few grey hairs 🤦🏻 How rewarding is it to be able to work with a mate to get things sorted..
So rewarding! Yeh shes been keeping me on my toes thats for sure but she still tows this van with ease!
HI Guys good work. As iam watching you I am thinking how much prep I have done to my Toyota you just don't know what can give way . Cheers all the best Steve and Deb.
All the prep in the world wouldnt have prepared me for that one. Only a week prior i made the comment that the car was in the best state its been in for years and i had only minor things to keep an eye on. Ahwell thats life on the road i guess
@@Ourwhittleadventure 😊 same we just spent 2 weeks on the Eyre Peninsular the Toyota ran as normal Awesome 👌 see how we go 😄
Amazing! All the best for your travels!
Great video you could probably use a mobile solar panel to add a bit load going into your batteries. I’m not how set it up but im sure where you it from would gladly oblige to give you the information on how to do it.having kids you would probably go through a bit more power. As for your diesel heater maybe give the jets a bit of a clean out may solve the problem Cheers guys and happy and safe travels
We actually had a portable panel out but it was a very good brand, we have a new one now which is much better! The diesel heater fault was actually the motor itself inside. In the following videos i pull it apart and find the issue and replace the internal motor and its been running great ever since! All a part of the adventure, forever ti kering away on something! Thanks for watching
Great idea to do the gvm upgrade than looking at a new vehicle a little bit less in change over which you could have spent on the upgrade and I would put the bike on the caravan giving you more room for a smaller car fridge.great idea with the overhead rack in the back great for storage good luck with the rest of your trip
Thank you, this is working at the moment and doing ok without the fridge for now but bike will be getting replaced soon for s bigger one so may need to look at a bike rack or something. Will get weighed again and see what room ive got to play with on the van too. Thanks for watching and the ideas
Forgive me if I’m wrong but I did notice your fan spinning quite freely when you first started it to look for the squeel when you shut it down it looked to spin freely but I guess your mechanic would have picked that up and for those sockets they do come in handy to stop you rounding off bolts or nuts because they are a perfect fit compared to normal sockets. Would have replaced all of exhaust bolts and studs for future but it’s good to see you got it going again 👍👍
Yeh i did replace them all, a whole new set to go with the new gaskets. Someone else has noticed that about the fan. Its getting a basic service next week so ill get them to look at that for me, viscous fluid or something
@@Ourwhittleadventure Toyota used to sell 20ml bottles of viscous coupling replacement fluid...and provide a neat little bung in the hub to tip it into. Bt of course, like a/c when you have to refill it...there's a small leak somewhere.. I used the same fluid on my Nissan Terrano JDM but had to split the hub and reseal it.. Nissan wants you to buy a whole new water pump as well since they are "not serviceable" and sold as a complete unit @ $$$ Yeah right....
@JohnSmith-pl2bk thanks buddy! Il look jnto it
Fourbys… am I right? 😂 So good it’s back together! Just wait till you get to the corrugations! We’ve been hitting them for the last 2 weeks on The Gibb and it’s done some mischief! 😬
Haha i know right. Ah the old girl handles corrugations ok, didnt like doing elquestro gorge crossing a couple years ago, did some electrical mischief that one
Great effort guys doing that on a nature strip is challenging. But best of all good pick up in the first place recognising a new sound. So many people either ignore or just don’t hear things like that. 👌
Yeh, shes an old girl i listen and hunt down any new sounds or changes of pitch and ang weird vibrations. Think it has saved me many times over being cautious. Have probably spent some unnecessary money but id rather be safe then sorry
@@Ourwhittleadventure not a waste of money much better safe than sorry.
@filthyoffroadadventures agreed
Troy comes across as a really good guy. Glad you had friends to help you out.
He absolutely is! Its funny we were born in the same town a year apart but only met 28 years later because our wives are childhood friends from the neighbouring town. Weird how it works sometimes
Good job . I'd better pop the bonnet on my 100 series & check them cause it's done 496k.Glad they come out easy for you off Centre holes & easy outs are you're worst nightmare
Yeh i was pretty nervous which is why i let Troy do that one. But very thankful they came out easy!! Something i will keep an eye on going forward
Might be an idea to have a look at replacing those bolts before they break, one by one, if it's something that happens more often at those kilometres on that engine, maybe? Thinking out loud here. It could of course open a can of "broken bolts" too??
Yeh possibly, is a right pain to get to. I wonder if there is a typical service interval for them, mines at 295000kms now so theyve done pretty well
Many hands there for you now 😅
Definitely
The house is like ours in the front & that hedge is the same as the one we pulled out 😃
Is a nice house theyve got, thankful to have a nice grassy spot to work
what pitfa. hahha. good job. hate to do this on my vdj200.
Yeh i dont think id like to do it on anything more modern to be honest!
You were lucky you were I Gladstone with a good friend that is a mechanic!
Haha very lucky! Hes not a vehicle mechanic either 😅 does work on big boat motors so i guess the skillset transfers over a bit
How did you secure the drop bear storage pockets please?
Hey they come with sticky velcro strips on the back of them. Check out their page they show how they stick and how to remove them if needed
@@Ourwhittleadventure many thanks
20secs in - Just a guess, but I'll say exhaust manifold/turbo to exhaust manifold gasket.
Haha solid guess!
So close :) Well done on the repair. Those studs can be a nightmare to get out.
@richarm66 yeh thankful they came out easy! Just a pain to get to
