.22 WMR is also good for inside where you don't want a round going through walls. I heard that, at close range, the .22 WMR was similar to a .38 Special's stopping power. This did a lot to support that...
The wood is only the studs, noggs and cross bracing. Most of the wall 1/2" gypsum board on each side of the studs. Which gives me an idea. He should do the same test using gypsum boards.
This is a very interesting test, with solid wood layers and the same company's ammo. The smaller calibers did a good job, better than some people might say.
The 22 magnum was a softpoint bullet. And the 38 special was unjacketed lead. This really handicapped those 2 calibers in this test, as those bullets would deform more, increasing their frontal area, so they penetrate less.

Passed completely through surprisingly. 👍 good video sir.
I was out shooting at a gun range with my wife and sons and we rented the range guns to compare with my sons 9mm. The 380 S&W was easy to fire and damn easy to place in the sweet spot on the targets - even better it was particularly easy for my wife as well. Typically .45 acp has less penetration than 9mm or .40, owing to it being slow and fat. It's more likely to glance off of thick bone and things like that; not by a large margin but a substantial one I would say. It will WRECK soft tissue though. I choose the 9 for general purpose. 10mm would be my pick if I wanted real power from a handgun, for bears or dinosaurs or whatever ;p
The .22 mag is a seriously underrated round...It might not have the one-shot drop of a .40 S&W but a .22 magnum will still stop a "Home invader" with a "Double tap" ..No problem at all. A .22 Magnum is a lot better than you think.
The 22mag was meant for rifles , the rest of the rounds are made for hand guns . Huge difference for the 22mag , I’m betting that it would go through 1 more board with a rifle.
I don't think so. The first guns produced for the .22 mag were Ruger and Colt revolvers. I've had a Colt Fonteir Scout since 1965. They didn't even come with a .22 LR cylinder in the first years of production. Back then, everyone seemed to want a .22 mag revolver. I wanted a .22 mag rifle, but none were being made until many years later.
Great test! And that 9mm was only a 115 gr. That's the winner IMO. Just as good penetration as the 40 and the venerable .357 but faster to shoot, better mag capacity and cheaper too. 9mm rules.
I think the 9 mm in a 40 caliber in a 357 Magnum all done a great job it's pretty thick wood but how do you say the nine rule in the 357 made a dent in the last wood piece seem like to me the 357 Magnum rule it only had 125 grain but my favorite caliber is the 40 caliber what if the 40 caliber had 135 grain that's their lowest grain compared to 9 mm with 115 grain who do you think will rule then 40 rules buddy
@@vakweeshanorthington2932 There's a video of a test between the .357 mag and the .40 s&w by Gun Sam. If my memory serves me correctly, the .357 mag outperformed the .40 s&w on that test.
@@williamwatson4625There’s so many variables in play. Underwood makes some 40 sw ammo producing over 600 ft lbs of energy. Most of their 9mm is mid to high 400’s. The 40 is a perfect compromise imo. Great stopping power and capacity combined. 640 ft lbs isn’t far off from standard 357 mag.
Good job. The .357 mag is a very deadly gun. So glad you used all guns with the 4 inch barrel. The longer barrel gives the bullets extra power. Have you ever done this test with those gellatinous block targets? It would be the most equal for the test.
Nicely done! Great job! The myths have been dispelled! The 357 round us a tank! I would like to see a 45acp side-by-side with a 357 magnum. That too would be interesting.

You've got a higher chance of dying in traffic on your commute to work than you have of ever needing a gun for self defence. But hey, paranoid priorities, amiright?
I enjoyed your comparisons, using the same brand of ammo was a good idea. It would be interesting to compare each caliber against itself using different bullet weights.
i liked an subscribed not only because your video was short no nonsense to the point but also because i really like the way you say "nine-millimeter"and i really dig those shoes,
I enjoy test like this. Over many years on and off the internet we all saw many videos of different woods and materials used for this kind of test. I like this one because I believe ( if I’m wrong sorry) this is more related for our house and what kind of wood like thickness it has.
I have noticed the last few years I have heard many people say 22lr, 223, and 9mm could not get the job done. When or why do people think they have become bulletproof?
Great video, I just wish you would have used the 158 grain for the 357. That is a more common round for that caliber. I was very surprised by the 9mm performance and the 22 magnum.
22 mag is way under rated, especially since it is a rifle cartridge (slow burning powder). If shot from a rifle it would have moved way up. The other cartridges are all designed for pistols. I use .22 mag in the keltec CMR-30, and it is a serious weapon.
Yes indeed 👍i have both the PMR-30 & the CMR-30, they are both great firearms, but with my own home made tests, i could defnitly tell that the CMR-30 gives the cartridge a bit more umph & bump.
Everyone has a personal favorite but for me whos shooting hand has gone bad over the years I cant handle the recoil of larger calibers . I feel more confident with a 380 or 32acp I can hold the gun for a second shot without it jumping out of my hand on the first shot from pain . Control and accuracy is more important than power alone so shoot what your most confident with
What I found interesting is that the 22 WMR and 38 Special provided the same result and both, traveled through 3 - (2 X12) boards set about 4 inches apart. Most people trash these rounds as incapable of penetrating, however this test proves such statements to be nonfactual... That said its no contest that the 357 and 40 proved to be the rounds with the most penetration, however, they are equally the most unwieldy to locate repeatedly on target, in a hand held machine.
@@jdd6447 Yeah I literally averaged all 204 9mm rounds and 134 .40 rounds on ballistics101.com and came to 370 foot pounds for 9mm and 444 foot pounds (ironic?) for .40. Not really a massive difference. Most of them are sub 500 anyway. 7 of the 9mm rounds are over 500, topping at 540, and 17 of the .40 are over 500, topping at 745, but the second most powerful is 675, third most powerful 602, and fourth most powerful 582. So all the ones over 600 are kind of outliers and not indicative of the average of the 135 rounds.
In Belgium we have high safety rules. We can't load a gun and then lay it down loaded and shoot with another one. At the range every gun must be unloaded with slide open en mag out(pistols), drum open(revolvers), bolt open(rifles) and lever open(lever-action).
@@judd_s5643 You can make fun of it all you want, but with guns there is no room for mistakes. You can pay with it with your own life when things go wrong...or worse...with other peoples their life. Gun rules are there for reasons. Follow them at any time to make the risk so small as posible.
Agreed. You’re going to get yourself kicked off the range in Canada by doing that. Never go down range before ensuring every single firearm is unloaded/cleared.
One thing not discussed is that the .22 WMR and .38 used lead bullets and all the rest were jacketed. Big difference in penetrability. Still a good test.
I see a lot of comments on things that you could have done different. Maybe those people should make their own video. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to use all the same brand of ammo and shot all the same boards. Then we were able to see how many boards the bullets went through. As a bonus we got to see some of the bullets. Very nice 👍
At the risk of sounding like Capt. Obvious those FMJ bullets can go through several boards but then they can also kill little Susie down the street. Hollow points are a much better choice. They don't penetrate as well because they mushroom but usually stay within the bad guy doing much more damage.
Yeah and if the .40 and .357 rounds went through all those boards and the bullets were still whole, they would most likely go right through a person. The .22 and .38 (especially hollow points) would tumble into the body causing even more damage

The old saying, you have a 380 with you and a 9 mm and 45 stay home.
@@SzymczykProductions And I’ve never had a misfire from 22lr using a 10/22 yea I notice some bad looking rounds that have dents or misshapen bullets I pick them out n don’t use them also th-cam.com/video/7h0s_62jXuk/w-d-xo.html 1000rd .22 no hiccups but regardless my.22 is my plinking/pest gun
Great video. Straightforward, honest, no opinions, just the facts! Great box you built to test!
Excellent demonstration and excellent video. This is going right in my playlist of firearm education.
Great comparison method! Simple and affective. Would have liked to have seen .45 ACP included. Thank you!
and 10mm
I was thinking the same thing Jeffery Brooks… .45 acp would have been a greater contender.
@@ManDuderGuy .357 King, Love 45 ACP which is my fav.
Very good video. I’m very surprised that the .22 mag even made it past the second board!
@@deaddocreallydeaddoc5244 thank you for the history lesson
Straight forward, simple, to the point without all the fanfare like all the other videos. Very nice!
Very good video. I love the unbiased approach. Good work. 👍
Very well organized video, very good video overall
Cool video. I was interested to see how that 22 mag is compared to the 38 special
looked like 38 and 22 mag are about even.
Feel like I’m standing there with a beer in my hand with you, saying “cool!”.
Nicely done! Great job! The myths have been dispelled! The 357 round us a tank! I would like to see a 45acp side-by-side with a 357 magnum. That too would be interesting.
45 acp does not get good penetration it would be last in the list . Would go through to boards
Love my .38 special for EDC..face it,it's 6 shots of 158 grain hollow points with very little recoil and a close contact revolver..I'm confident that if I pump two in the ticker and can follow up the bad guy won't be able to testify 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Facts my brother 38 is a man stopper also.
Mines a 7 shot
Mines only a 5 shot but got 5 +P rounds loaded and 5 more in a speed loader just in case. Never felt under protected at all
I carry 25 rounds of novx 9mm at all times. 65 gr 1800 fps +p low recoil. I love ammo technologies!
You've got a higher chance of dying in traffic on your commute to work than you have of ever needing a gun for self defence. But hey, paranoid priorities, amiright?
He sounds like the “I’m ready” guy! Lol
Good video, no bs, just the test.
I enjoyed your comparisons, using the same brand of ammo was a good idea. It would be interesting to compare each caliber against itself using different bullet weights.
Thank you, surprising. God Bless and stay safe.
i liked an subscribed not only because your video was short no nonsense to the point but also because i really like the way you say "nine-millimeter"and i really dig those shoes,
I enjoy test like this. Over many years on and off the internet we all saw many videos of different woods and materials used for this kind of test.
I like this one because I believe ( if I’m wrong sorry) this is more related for our house and what kind of wood like thickness it has.
good video straight forward, no excuses, all the same ammo company, and just the facts, thank you
Straight to the point! No needless chitchat just objective achieved
well done sir. Appreciate you getting to the point, that is what I look for
Very nice test. Thank you for the comparison.
Of all the ammo sizes: shot placement is crucial.
Awesome video! Thank you.
I have noticed the last few years I have heard many people say 22lr, 223, and 9mm could not get the job done. When or why do people think they have become bulletproof?
Congratulation Jak, the best vídeo of the arm...
Thanks for a great comparison. Well done!
Sub'd, im watching all your videos! I love your tests! Awesome job my brother!! 👏 👍
I love shooting the 22 mag out of my Uberti stallion 5.5" revolver.......I just love it when that gun goes off with that magnum round.
Yup the .22 mag is no fucking joke lol love mine
Everyone has a personal favorite but for me whos shooting hand has gone bad over the years I cant handle the recoil of larger calibers . I feel more confident with a 380 or 32acp I can hold the gun for a second shot without it jumping out of my hand on the first shot from pain . Control and accuracy is more important than power alone so shoot what your most confident with
Thank you. GoodStuff 👍
What I found interesting is that the 22 WMR and 38 Special provided the same result and both, traveled through 3 - (2 X12) boards set about 4 inches apart. Most people trash these rounds as incapable of penetrating, however this test proves such statements to be nonfactual...
That said its no contest that the 357 and 40 proved to be the rounds with the most penetration, however, they are equally the most unwieldy to locate repeatedly on target, in a hand held machine.
.40 is equal to 9mm but more expensive, no thx I'll pass.

Same applies in uk. I have been a qualified R.O. for over 30 years and fully endorse your rules.
I understand you also have to get a permit($/€) to cook steaks on your barbecue as well!
Yes even if you are alone out in the desert, follow the same rules as a range and you will be safe
Hey Byran, I've been beating the drum for. 22 mag for decades. What was it, 3 boards maybe 4. And dem boards ain't balsam wood, They be hard.
Thank you 🙏🏼! Finally a no nonsense test that gives a straight forward answer! Your the man Dude
Please make more gun videos . I like your style simple straight to the point no bullshit.
Am waiting for some new ammo to come, thanks brother!
One thing not discussed is that the .22 WMR and .38 used lead bullets and all the rest were jacketed. Big difference in penetrability. Still a good test.
Wish he included the 380. It's my favorite most comfortable to carry.
The round may have bounced off the first board and hit him in the eye. Ha
@@x2malandy Why? It's almost the same as a .38 or 9 mm.
I see a lot of comments on things that you could have done different. Maybe those people should make their own video.
I appreciate the fact that you took the time to use all the same brand of ammo and shot all the same boards. Then we were able to see how many boards the bullets went through. As a bonus we got to see some of the bullets.
Very nice 👍
Thank you, Sir well done!
So 9mm, 40SW and .357 Magnum all penetrated 4 boards, but the .357 Magnum made a hard impact on the 5th board, but didn't go through.
It hit a knot (knots are harder to penetrate)
great comparison video... i learn a lot from this. thanks man.
Great job. The best part, no music.
I got secondhand anxiety from you handling those rough boards with your bare hands. Splinters galore.
Great test. I didn't think any of them would have made it past the 2nd board. Boy was I wrong.
At today's prices that target would cost a thousand dollars (LOL). Thanks for this demonstration.
Answered alot of my questions good video thank you
I would say that if it can go through one board , it is capable to kill .
At the risk of sounding like Capt. Obvious those FMJ bullets can go through several boards but then they can also kill little Susie down the street. Hollow points are a much better choice. They don't penetrate as well because they mushroom but usually stay within the bad guy doing much more damage.
@@jimmyjames7174 lil Susie better mind her "bidness" then when the shots start flying and gtfo the way😆
Plus flesh is a tad softer than Solid Yellow Pine. SYP is alot stronger than given credit for.
Yeah and if the .40 and .357 rounds went through all those boards and the bullets were still whole, they would most likely go right through a person. The .22 and .38 (especially hollow points) would tumble into the body causing even more damage
@@1Wheelchairmaniac that sounds like a good thing for multiple opponent's. Have you seen the way untrained people clear a building? Double kill? Triple kill?
