  • Hello everyone and thank you for watching. In this video I set out in the forests of Connecticut in search of Barred Owls (Strix varia) to photograph. The year prior I had located three different families of barred owls in these woods and I was excited to head out and try to find a new family of these elusive birds. Using what I had learned and observed the year prior I headed back into the area where I had seen the owlets the year prior. Barred Owls tend to utilize the same territory year after year so if I was to find an owl family, chances are that it would be the same adults raising the young as I saw last year.
As I hiked into the forest, I found a good spot to sit along a forest brook and I sat quietly and waited. I was waiting for the begging call of a barred owlet which is a unique sound and hard to explain. After about a half hour, I heard the call deeper into the woods and I used this to eventually locate a barred owlet perched up in the tree above. I sat under the owlet, hoping they would eventually fly to lower perch but that was not the case. The first day ended with me not getting much footage of the owlet, however I was able to locate the owl and that is often the hardest part.
My next outing was in the early morning, just after sunrise. The feeding of owlets is highest just after sunset and just prior to sunrise, so by getting to the location just after sunrise, I was hoping I would witness more activity among the adults and the owlets. I was able to locate the owl family in the similar vicinity as the day prior and was able to get some great footage of them. I hope you enjoy this video and the photos I was able to get of this cute little owl family.

I do wildlife photography. There is nothing more rewarding than having a plan and having things turn out even better than you had hoped. Fantastic video. Hope the good luck continues.

Really amazing video. Owls are such a treat to be able to see. It's interesting to see the owlets move around and experience the world and you captured some excellent footage.
I've never been able to see Barred Owl owlets yet - hopefully next year! Thanks for sharing.

I actually started with a Nikon D500 and the Nikon 200-500mm lens. I switched to Canon about a year ago and I now use the R5 for my main camera and the R6 as the vlogging and backup camera. Thanks for watching!
