- Join me today as I head out on a windy February day to photograph hooded mergansers. These diving ducks are alway some of my favorite to watch and photograph because the males and females are both very beautiful. I set myself up in a good position and eventually the wind died down and I was able to get some great photos and videos of these birds as they were foraging in the shallow water in front of me.
If you're new to my channel, my name is Todd DeWald and I am a wildlife and nature photographer in New England. I have a degree in fisheries and wildlife sciences and it is my goal that through photography, I can share some of the amazing animals that live around us, while sharing some photography tips along the way.

Beautifully filmed! I really enjoyed this video!
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Great work! Lots of beautiful shots and video. I especially enjoyed your music selections, they compliment the photography without overpowering them. I love the hooded mergansers.
Thank you for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it! Hooded mergansers are some of my favorite as well!
Todd, I’m new to your channel. The quality of these productions is outstanding. Please do share more about the behavior of the subjects. I’m always trying to improve my field craft, and just my personal knowledge of wildlife in general. I wish that I had started sooner with wildlife photography. At 61, I’m just amazed at all the new things I’m seeing and learning. Most of my photos are done within 90 minutes of my home, taking advantage of migrations. Many times my friends think I was on a far away vacation. Nope. The more you look, the more you see. Beautiful work Todd!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words I really appreciate it! It is amazing what can be seen even close to your home. I hope you have a spring full of good experiences!
Great resolution…light and depth of field!
Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!
Fantastic images! I really appreciate your approach to wildlife photography with your emphasis on habitat.
Thanks for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video and I enjoyed the music you chose for this one. Thank you.
Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful photo, beautiful video.
Thank you for watching and for the comment I really appreciate it!
Waiting for the osprey!
I'm sure they will be back soon! thanks for watching!
Well done! Waterfowl from shore is always a challenge, especially here in New England where things are so skitterish. I have spent plenty of cold days as you did.
Thank you! Yes I am sure you have with getting your loon footage! Thanks for watching.
Great work.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Todd, excellent video! it is hard to get low angle shots at Stebbins without getting wet. loved the lighting.
Thank you! Yes that's for sure!
Beautiful birds, beautiful video. I bet you are enjoying your z9. Looks like a wonderful tool. Replacing my D500 for a z8 soon. Your weather looks "spring-like" in Connecticut, getting nicer here in NS,March 2nd. Cheers Todd
Thank you for watching! It really is a great tool, I am sure you will enjoy the Z8 as well I have heard great things. The weather has been all over the place. When I recorded this it was cold and windy and actually felt like winter, yet two days prior it was in the 60's. Everything is all off balance.
@@ToddDeWaldPhotography Yes, I agree, weather consistently inconsistent, thanks Todd, keep your content a Rollin! Alan
great video Todd, things are picking up here in Ontario also waterfowl is returning getting great photos too.. i also use a lensecoat throw works great do you use one much..
Thanks for watching! I use a camouflaged blanket for a similar effect. This area has a lot of traffic and people so I tend not to use it at this location, which is unfortunate because there are usually so many birds. Some sort of camo or blind is definitely the way to go with waterfowl!
Beautiful video and images! I have tears in my eyes. Thanks so much for bringing these beautiful birds to us!
Thank you I really appreciate it! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Excellent video, Todd. You walked away with so many photos that are just masterpieces. Stunning beauty!!
Thank you I really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Female hooded merganser at 10:49 is my favorite, nice video!! Cheers, DT 🦉
Thank you! That was one of my favorite clips as well!
