- When you are on a farm, you get used to being CREATIVE when getting a job done . . . so of course when it came to building our basement walls and STANDING THEM UP, we got CREATIVE and re-purposed our hay equipment!
So far, it's working GREAT! Today we are slamming out the rear MAIN SUPPORTING WALL and HOPING our builder will LOVE IT when he arrives next week . . . but IS it correct?
Erik walks through a bit of advice with how to frame windows and doors when building a wall, and we discuss a bit on local building codes regarding exterior walls in basements.

Welcome to This Life We Live ( This 1 Life We Live ) formerly the WTFarm Girl channel.
Subscribe and follow along as we build our DREAM HOME after 10 long years of saving and waiting! It's a barndominium house plan with a shed style roof. It's a barndominium hybrid, so it's stick-built and on a basement because here in Michigan we get a LOT of tornadoes!
We'd LOVE to build it fully from the ground up, but sadly our local township only allowed us TWO YEARS to fully complete our home, so it's a race against time to try to get everything done BOTH with professional help AND on our own!
Building half of it on our own allows us a MASSIVE savings with our budget and makes this unique home design actually affordable!
We started with a low cost floor plan, to make this an affordable barndominium and learned how to save money on a house build.
We have some fantastic ways to save money on a new house and easy DIY home design tips!
This is going to be the coolest house on TH-cam by the time it's complete!
If you have suggestions or ideas, we'd love to hear them!

Great work Suzanne, Erik , Earen and The Puppies, nice start made there👌👍🙏😎
Thanks Pat!
You need 3 times as many supports to protect the walls from high winds. Prop from BOTH Sides. Drive a 2x4 deep into the ground and anchor the supports at 45°.on the outside of wall framing. Perhaps leave tractor and FEL in place tied off for the next couple days of Beryl TD. Most homes have double headers over doors and always double Sill plates. Do you intend to drill through the bottom plate(s) and then drill 5/8" Anchor bolts in the Concrete? Codes differ. Install lots of Hurricane Clips before drywall/siding. Closed Cell Spray foam Insulation? Use a string line to align Wall Sections.
That's a great idea to use the tractor to stand to walls up. I like your thinking, a lot.
Oh wait until you see the middle walls go up, hahahhaa!
Hello everyone! Exciting announcement 👉 NEW CHANNEL AND NAME CHANGE: th-cam.com/channels/gouCAMHLiTPSgVbCCuwRQA.html
I am moving all my old farming content onto this NEW channel. I will also add new farming content as well, but this is for those of you who enjoy the farming side of the channel :D
It looks good from here. I hope you can record the look on your builder's face. I hope he doesn't think you hired someone else. I can guarantee he will tell you what you did wrong.
Nice work guys! The channel name change threw me though 🤣🤣🤣
LOL, yes the announcement is coming today! We went forwards and backwards thinking it over, and it just seemed a better fit since this will be the main theme of my videos for the next 2 years ;)
Looking good Suzanne 👍 Take care and have a blessed and safe week 🙏
Thankyou Billy!
Starting to take shape !!
We got nearly everything framed in for the basement, it's so strange to see it looking like a house! The big wall we got done Tuesday through Thursday, and the inner rooms we completed Sunday night, I may release a video Wednesday on that
You're making great progress to.
It will be the last 10% that will take the longest. The details eat time.
And inspections ;D
Great looks good to me hopefully the expert thinks the same when he shows up ❤
I hope so!
susans squeaks made me laugh 😄
you should hear the noise she makes if she gets hurt. you think your being attacked by banshees!
I honestly think it's getting worse the older I get :P
@@ruralridez6165 gotta use those earmuffs so she dont make your ears bleed 🤣
@@This1LifeWeLive scardycat 🤭🤣
@@emil8786 haha now thats a good one...I actually did start wearing ear plugs but not because of Suzanne. using that nailer in the basement was crazy loud.
Another great vid! Hang in there
Thankyou!
1 nail from what your king boardv for 2in of header2x6 needs 3 2x8 needs 4 ect hope the ruff opneing is bigger than the doors you can shim in to fit can`t cut on the king levele up and down a must and ck that you end up square on top so not to thro off final and whole build corner to corner that way you don`t have to trim the 4x8 sheating and make the build take much longer
1/2in bigger on the sides and 3/4in bigger on top
*Suzanne & Eric, wow you got lots done... 🙂So has the builder shown up and checked out your work yet? 🙂 BTW, it looks like that you both work as a great team together on the building site 🙂 Have an awesome week and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. 🙂nz*
He's due to arrive today, Erik is pacing the floor hoping he loves it, lol
@@This1LifeWeLive *Good luck and I have fingers and everything else is crossed for you both , that the builder approves 🙂.*

Wish I were there to help out some. But I'm pretty sure you will get it done. It's gonna look beautiful ❤️
Thankyou, I appreciate it! I'm sure we will have lots to help with on the inside later ;D
@@This1LifeWeLive welcome ❤️👍🏽
I wish you were here too.
Diangle bracing on the walls
yes we also need to get all the blocking in too.
Looks good
Thanks Gary! You'll have to pop in some time :D
You need to share some of that nice tan you with Farming with Kels. That poor girl is white as a ghost even being out there planting all of that corn and soybeans.
My skin is very white and normally I don't tan well. But farming has been acclimating my skin and it now tans up well on the top half.
My dream for several decades was to have a hobby farm with a pole barn for storage and building things. Because of Lyme disease my income has been too small so I’ve been renting storage instead. I’ve been at my current storage 22 years. The lady who owns it is in her middle 80’s and I’ll probably have to find another place once she is no longer with us.
Are you able to have a shipping container brought in for your property? They can be a bit better cost wise than building sometimes :) Ours cost us a bit under $4,000 and has been a life saver!
@@This1LifeWeLive
I don’t think I could do that.
have seen builders just walk away if they feel something is off
Did you get the clutch done on the red tractor.?
Not yet we did adjust the clutch for wear now it grabs good.
I have a video on that I haven't released yet... we just adjusted it so far but it should be replaced. We might see if we can swap it for a hydrostat
are you going to frame the whole house
We are doing the basement and working with a builder to do the main level. the main level walls are 19ft tall so they will take the skill of a professional builder to set.
Hi Suzanne How are you heating and cooling the house..
We are still thinking about that. Do you have any economic suggestions? I would like a wood stove for the upstairs.
No idea yet, haha
You can heat and cool with geothermal under ground piping. Best thing to do is get with a heating and cooling pro to size a system for the house.
First
Your a funny guy LOL!!!
@@jasonbusch3624 Got a lot of the basement done. Been working all weekend on it.

Bad idea of not informing your builder that you started early.By not informing him, it could impact his plans.I'm sure he had a schedule as to what is done when such as electrical, plumbing, building inspection.Im sure he scheduled other jobs around yours. Just hope you didn't screw up your builder's schedule
He was actually 4 weeks late starting our job, so our roof trusses had been sitting outside for a month molding away. I fully understand your concern though :) By getting the basement done it saved him about 2 weeks of time PLUS paying his crew for their labor. We had to schedule the other trades because we are the GC. He is contracted out to shell in the house :)
