As for the defensive argument, I read a lot of the comments doesn't fit. Since all my fleets must use race specific tech, only my paranid fleet has S bombers that don't use torpedoes, but Blast Mortars. Agree about station demolition. Encountered the same issues, plus missile turrets would not fire at a distance. For using heavy protection and armed ships for defence...no ship have enough heavy protection and armor to compensate for the inept AI of the L and LX ships. Only way to compensate for that is to deliver enough dmg so that the enemy capital ship is destroyed before destroying your own L/LX ships. And if you can't use (or you choose not to, like I do with terran ships) L plasma turrets, you are screwed on that. Also agree on the Ray. One of the "merits" of the Ray, is that it made a destroyer like the humble Behemoth, look like a "death star" in comparison, when L plasma turrets are used. The Odysseus even more so. Even if you buy the ships, there is still 50% in profit for you. You can also do what other players do, get an M ship, a L trader packed with marines and start bording (some use the starting fighter to bail out SCA M ships, as a starting money making). Personally, I dont do that, as I suck at it, but there is money to be made. Others, even capture Asgards. So, in short, miner escort missions, deliver fleet missions, and boarding. All this towards the goal of building a shipyard, build ships and sell them manually, as the shipyards profits from default selling of ships, were severely nerfed (still profitable tho).
