    if anyone is reading this. USE A DRILL BIT FIRST BEFORE YOU SCREW OR YOU WILL BLOW OUT THE MDF. Find a small drill bit that is a little bit smaller than the shaft of the screw ie 3/32''. Just eyeball it at the hardware store, dont drill too big of a hole so that the threads on screw dont bite into mdf. Then do the star pattern like shown in video UNTIL the last few mm and then STOP. I repeat STOP and finish all screws the rest of the way IN A STAR PATTERN with a SCREW DRIVER. Trust me I have blown out so many boxes as a teenager and then had to rotate the subwoofer countless times to get a fresh spot for the screws. Dont do this. TIGHTEN IT BY HAND!

    could you (or do you already have) a video that shows installing a subwoofer from start to finish? What I mean by that is you buy all the required parts and install them from start to finish in a car, showing all the wiring, box installing (or building) and wire clean up that goes along with installing a sub. I think this would be a great video to for people to constantly go back to to see the full process and what it takes to install a sub.

    Hi I just order 2of the exact subwoofers in your demonstration from you. What kind of mono amp should I consider using. One that is cabable of handing both subs with out blowing them. Right now I'm running 2 old 10s Rockford with a jl 500.1 JX mono amp. Was considering if I should go for a more powerful amp. I'm on a bugget so I don't want a high expensive one. Maybe $300 or less.

    Searching for an easy way to center the woofer over the hole. Is it better to cut away the carpet from the enclosure where the Woofer seats for a better seal or to keep the carpet from climbing up the screw? EZ Lok # 10-24 insert fasteners for MDF soft wood and other options for a sealed box if you didn't want extra leaky holes going all the way through the enclosure. Speaker gasket tape, ring spacers, grills and other options would be helpful.

    • @pokealong
      @pokealong 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You pre drill, then you line it up with the hole and hammer it in. It's fairly close to just pre drilling then putting in a screw.

  • @vipersb1
    @vipersb1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    "We like our T Nuts" then you show how to install a wood screw? I think most people know how to use a drill to install a wood screw. How about showing people how to properly install the T Nut method? I think that would be far more helpful. And whats this about using a hammer? Good luck using a hammer to install T Nuts on an already assembled enclosure. A C Clamp works much better or using the bolt to pull the T Nut into the wood.

    The gasket that you mentioned is also used to stop vibration . Using the speaker carpet will satisfy sealing and vibration issues , well , usually . How about some damping material inside the box to cancel out back waves . How do you expect it to have a half decent bass response . This is necessary , whether vented or sealed !

      I'm assuming you mean the wiring terminal... I wouldn't remove one that's already installed, but if you want to direct connect like that, just drill some wire sized holes in the box and feed the wires through, then connect to subwoofer- Don't forget to seal the holes with something.
      I wouldn't advise this, but the terminal serves no magical purpose (just convenience) and can be bypassed at will.

      The exact same process of this video, just do it backwards. Then you should be able to drop those subs into a ported box.be careful though. Ported boxes have to be tuned and setup to your specific sub. If its a box that was pre built to hold a different brand of sub or a sub with different ratings, then its not gonna work too well. Make sure the ported box is setup to your sub specs.

    "Better than ruining a $300 Woofer"... and he's mounting a $180 sub.
    Any ways, some oversights/flaws in this video:
    1.) You didn't talk about lining up the holes at all. This is an aesthetic issue, as you might want to align your dust cap logos to your box.
    2.) No mention of grills. For those adding a protective grill over their sub, these have a variety of mounting methods. Some use gaskets that go under the sub, while others just screw over top of the sub, into the box.
    3.) You're using a powered driver. While this is helpful in driving a screw without pre-drilling, it's NOT the ideal way to do this. If you do use a powered driver, only use it for driving the first 2/3 or 3/4 of the screw, then hand tighten the rest. You can easily strip the screw head, strip the hole in the MDF, or put too much torque on it, causing it to enter the wood at an angle.
    4.) Pre-drill the holes. With no pre-drilling you risk cracking thinner MDF of cheap boxes, or otherwise this just giving you a sloppy mount that gets substantially weaker with every sub remount.
    5.) Don't use quick disconnects, even if you crimp them more. Just use ring terminals, crimped and soldered to the wire. Then screwed down to the terminal cups. I use a rubber cream cement to keep them in place (that's still easy to rub off if switching at a later date), but you can also use lock washers to keep the nuts from rattling loose.
    6.) Sleeved driver bits still don't prevent slippage, as the screw body is always thinner than the screw head. They're for helping you hold the screw, and for using your hand to guide the screw. If you pre-drill, you'll never need to worry about sleeved drivers.
    7.) You failed to mention anything about gaskets, carpeted boxes, etc. You need to make a good seal around that sub, which is important regardless of ported or sealed designs. Carpeted boxes don't need gaskets, while plain, painted boxes or composite/poly fronts do.
    8.) If using t-nuts, opt for the round ones, and never, ever hammer them into the box. Doing so can bend the threaded socket, leaving you with misaligned mounts. Not only that, it's difficult to install them on pre-built boxes. Just tap them lightly with a rubber mallet to hold them in place, but let the tightening of the bolt pull it tightly into the MDF. Use a washer between the bolt and the sub the first time to avoid damaging the sub's basket. Then unscrew all of the bolts, remove the sub, and check to ensure the t-nuts are secure. Remount.

      Not really. Most subwoofers will come with a mounting gasket (similar to weather stripping) to provide a better seal for the subwoofer basket, the box, and the screw. In most cases the screw would be secure enough for minimal air leaks, but we always recommend using the foam/rubber gasket

    OK so i know this is old but im gonna say this anyway for future comments in all most all application 14 Gage weir is more then enough unless your running a 2500 to 5000 rms sub then id go to 8 Gage but if your sub is 800 1000 1500 rms 14 is plenty good enough

      +calvin uzell 12 Gauge speaker wire works in most application and then you just connect it to your positive and negative speaker connections on your amplifier. You should be golden after that my friend.

      What's the wattage and wires for what? Speaker wire? Or power/ground wire?

    • @jonathanschultz2472
      @jonathanschultz2472 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you have an insanely high wattage system I would say 4 gauge power/ground and 12 gauge speaker wire

    Elmer's rubber clue on the seal, it's easy to remove and a little more guaranteed not to leak air. You can tell if there's a leak by pressing on the sub.
    With screws, it's best to mark the holes, use a small drill bit. Then you can mount the sub and screw them in by hand with much less pressure on the screwdriver to drive them in. That's where people slip, is when they put pressure on the drill or screw driver.

    can i put subs in box with out drilling them, just sit them in there

    • @01hondascott
      @01hondascott 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yg Bodybuilder yes, some people like to make almost a gasket around them with tooth paste so the air doesn't leak out and it creates a strong grip on the sub but will come free easily if you wish to paste in another woofer down the road.

    great video nice but those are vsw suwoofer's not vcw's like in the start of the video he say's that

  • @biggermal1
    @biggermal1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I mean about the carpet , it will become compressed between the woofer and box , and if done properly , the gasket should not be necessary .
