    The gun he comes with kinda reminded me of the smart-gun from "ALIENS" when I had the figure.

      It was the closest we had at the time. Heck even using the term "steadi-cam" is implying Aliens Smart Gun given they use the steadi-cam mount in the movie. It wasn't until Iron Grenadier v8 that we got a looks like a real Smart Gun weapon only it didn't have a mount. But damn you look at it, and it screams I am the smart gun you craved!

      I forgot where I read it but it was inspired by the smart gun and Dodger from battle force 2000 was inspired by the colonial marines uniform

      He'll yeah me too. I saw Aliens way too young, but fell in love with the steadi-cam\smart machine gun concept. Repeater was my only chance to get a taste of that glory.lol

    Love Repeater. He was my space Marine stand in. Repeater and Hit and Run kept me going with GI Joe. I didn’t care about the crazy colors or whacky ideas for characters.

    1988 actually had a number of realistic designs (Hit and Run, Muskrat, Reapeater, Shockwave, Storm Shadow v2, Ghostrider and arguably Spearhead) In general, I don't think that particular era of GI Joe gets enough credit today as it was sandwiched between the two eras of GI Joe's presence in other media.

    • @roguishpaladin

      1988 also gave us Destro v2, which while maybe not as realistic is one of the prettiest figures they ever released. It's weird that the same year that gave us all those figures also gave us stuff like Hardball and the bright purples and yellows that came to dominate the line later.

    • @timf7413
      @timf7413 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though I tend to hate the sports themed Joes, I honestly kind of like Hardball. The baseball theme is goofy, but at least it makes a certain amount of sense for his specialty and the figure has some great details (I love the sculpted on ammo storage) and great accessories.

    The ALIENS Colonial Marines guide book does show how the smart gun can be fired from a prone position. It basically involved the user laying on their back and firing it from their belly. Perhaps that is how Repeater could fire his gun from the prone position.

    When I saw Repeater at a local Kay Bee Toys back in the day, I just HAD to buy him since his accessory reminded me of the hardware used in the movie Aliens....I guess that's what Hasbro was shooting for at the time.

    Repeater's weapon actually reminds me a little of the Mk19 40mm automatic grenade launcher. The barrel is a little too narrow to actually be a 40mm, weapon but consider the shorter length of the barrel.

  • @digipure
    @digipure 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me Repeater was like a turning point. Before owning this figure I was more interested on slightly futuristic and ninja characters, but Repeater made me more interested on realistic characters. I even created my own "unit" joining the more realistic joes I owned XD

  • @white-dragon4424

    The gun itself might not be workable, but the concept is definitely practical, because the Smartguns in Aliens were adapted from real life WWII MG-42 machineguns., and as the film shows they were fully functional. Repeater's gun's ammo storage is also probably based on the Smartgun, because as far as I can tell from watching the movie the ammo storage was built into the system rather than being a dangling belt.

  • @tilarium2

    Repeater played a very important role in my play in the late 90s. Despite being in high school, I still enjoyed and played with my GI Joe. I conceived a scenario where COBRA has been mostly wiped out. Most of it's top leaders were imprisoned or dead but Cobra Commander wasn't. A fake CC was, but not the real one. He was working to rebuild his connections and get COBRA back up. He teamed up with newer 90s leaders.. Cesspool, Headman, M. Bison (yeah I know... I brought the Street Fighters into the fold). Poor Repeater was one leading a team of raw GI Joe recruits in a training exercise when they were ambushed, the recruits all died and Repeater was captured. In a ceremony to fully revive COBRA, Repeater was tortured and sacrificed, his burned, scared and beaten corpse returned to the PITT signaling to the Joes that COBRA was back. Yes... I cut him. Yes... I burned him. I regret it now, but someone had to die and by that point I had lost his machine gun and rig so....

    I found a series of very good accessories which included ammunition belts which fit very well on most GI Joe machine guns, they were from knock off figures but the stuff looked quite good. It was very cheap too. I used one of them for my Repeater.

    The Steadi-Cam rig does help slightly with the suspension of disbelief firing a .50 cal handheld. Then again, two years later the same line would be going, “Hey, think this guy will want a tripod for this missile launcher the size of a Volkswagen?” “Naah, he can just shoulder it.” 🤣🤣🤣

    Great review!! I love Repeater! Had him as a kid and he was easily one of my favorites. I agree that GI Joe was at its best when the futuristic sci fi stuff was presented as a realistic military unit. For instance, the HAL, JUMP, Skyhawk, SLAM & LAW, were molded in the same army green as the other contemporary vehicles. Even the Battleforce 2000 figures weren't too bad as most had somewhat realistic looking camo patterns.

    “Close to 20 years in the Army” and only an E6? Sounds like a slacker to me. Also, good luck getting a staff sergeant to carry a heavy machine gun.

    Funny how the filecard claims he's been in the army for a long time but Repeater in the comics is shown in the training if repater really had all that time in the military as the filecard states I don't think he would need all that training from issue 82 of the comics.

    • @robonintendo
      @robonintendo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was more of a selection phase than actual training. Doesn't matter how much time you have in, you can't skip over selection if you want to go Spec Ops or join the Joe team.

    I very much doubt future troops will look like that. As time goes on they'll more than likely be wearing full body armour, much like the marines in Aliens, only with much more integrated technology. They'll also have visors with built in HUDs like Iron Man, as well as having air conditioning units to allow them to survive in extreme climates, and powered exo-frames to give them more strength in the field.
