there have been many movies and video games that were inspired by that movie, since it came out in '86,it's certainly possible that the gun was inspired as well.
he is a solid member of the team. the flaw about not having an ammunition belt being fed into the weapon is probably why rock n roll v2, pathfinder and saw viper do have the ammunition belt. nice comparison between the 3 heavy machine gunners.
hi im 32 years old I just started collecting last week after seeing some gi joes at a garage sale they had one I had when I was a kid brought some fun memories so I decided to collect the ones I had the thing is that when I was young all my gi joes were bought in Poland where I lived are they different than American version? I went on yo joe website and made the list of the ones I can remember I had
I think by 1987 Hasbro UK (formerly Palitoy) distributed American standard toys with multi-language packages for Europe. Some early toys may still have stickers that say "Action Force" instead of "GI Joe". The only Europe-only toys were additional Tiger Force figures (Europe got 10 figures, US/Canada only got 7).
Hi Kevin, Very interesting comment about Repeater being the headliner of 1988 series. I think it makes sense. To me it also seems that Hasbro tried to have a headliner per year since around 1984 (which matches with the start of the popularity of the animated series), trying to match them with who was supposed to be the leader of the team in that year. I think they started with 1984 Duke, then 1985 Flint, 1986 Hawk v2, 1987 Falcon and 1990 Cpt. Grid Iron. These facts are very easy to evidence due to the way these characters were portraited in the Sunbow and DIC animation series and movie. Yes, I skipped 2 years (1988 and 1989) , of course because they had no animated series, but also, because funny enough, inf fact there was a Duke figure in 1988. However, I agree with you with the fact that Repeater quite probably would have been treated as they new leader of that series, as Flint did in 1985 after having Duke figures around. It also seems that, in the animated series, sub-teams like Sky Patrol were properly distinguished from the core of G.I.Joe. Therefore, if there would have been Tiger Force appearance in the animated series I believe they would have had their own space as a sub-team, without mixing leaderships with the core team. But, then, regarding 1989 my question to you is, which character do you think it would have been the headliner for 1989???
By the way, specially in the artwork, Repeater really looks much alike John Cena, which, again, matches with the idea of big and popular american icon. Even though, John Cena character was created much later, this reinforces your theory. Also the color scheme of Repeater is the same color scheme as Duke's. Clearly, it seems in 1987 (with Falcon as Duke's brother) and 1988 (with Repeater) Hasbro tried to create a 'new Duke'. I wonder if more media support happened, what would have been the result of the popularity of these (specially the second, not very popular one) figures?
I'm not sure there would have been a headliner for 1989. A lot of the merchandise created for the year only had the logo or a group of 1989 characters. Perhaps it was because 1989 was the 25th anniversary of the brand and Hasbro took the opportunity to showcase everything and not just one character? The DiC cartoon also premiered this year and no real "leader type" is focused on except Sgt. Slaughter and Stalker.
to clarify, a US Army soldier can take Ranger school & then wear the distinctive tab. The black & red Ranger bat, 75th Rangers is a unit symbol. Not all US army rangers serve in the 75 th Ranger bn. Rangers who do call them: bat boys. Lol.
There was no media support for Repeater. Media is very important in establishing characters - you watch and hear these guys and that is more memorable than just seeing their faces on a box. The comics (written by Larry Hama) chose a small core group to focus on: Snake Eyes, Roadblock and Hawk. There was no cartoon for 1987 and 1988 - Hasbro dropped the Sunbow animation contract after the movie and didn't get another until late 1989.
+formbx257 Reapter was awesome cool character wishing they give an animation appearance in the sunbow cartoon or the dic for one episode at least but come think to about it the Dic cartoon season 1 they give the chain of command to General hawk, sgt.slaughter and Cpt.Gridiron & season 2 Dic was back to Hawk, Duke (also took back the chain of command back season 1 episode mind mangler & stuck on you by the time Cpt.Gridiron and sgt.slaughter no longer appeared)and sometimes flint (Eco warrior now)
repeater is honestly one of the worst, most un-realistic GI Joes. a real SOF soldier would draw enemy fire or have the machine gun break. even a "direct action" op would be hard to justify.
I've always thought that this guys weapon was inspired by the smart guns seen in the movie Aliens.

Agreed!
Yeah, looks like a Colonial Marines m56 Smartgun operator...
Keep up the good work!!! Recently found your channel and I'm loving it.
Great looking figure. Always preferred the Joe's with a Military camo scheme. Thanks for another terrific review.

The wings on his cover are either Navy/Marine Corps jump wings or Honduran jump wings. The Army jump wings are silver with curled wings.

it is possible to get a two handed pose on the gun with the steadicam attached, you just need the right angle .
dachicagoan yes from when i met him at NYCC 5 years ago.

Very interesting that Hasbro was grooming Repeater to replace Duke. But why didn't it happen?

I think they based his likeness on Peter Weller, the actor who played robocop.
It looks to me like the design of the gun is made to actually be pointing upward as if Repeater is supposedly firing at air attackers.
Did no one else ever think it looked like he had 4 pocket patrol packs on the front of his vest?!?
maybe repeater was inspired by Michael Jackson, it was the 80s after all.

i found this version www.yojoe.com/action/89/repeater2.shtml v2 which seems to be less common and more in demand than v1.
I did a quick overview of all the 1989 Night Force figures here: th-cam.com/video/WBXdZW8BC10/w-d-xo.html
